Lobster Cheese Dip and Asian Wontons
    Natacia G.

Yet another chain restaurant review. This location was the Whitby one in the Entertainment District. I find that this one is always busy when I go. They do have trivia nights and a lot of TV screens. Although, this time around we did only come for the appetizers. Nothing spectacular. This was my first time trying the Asian Wontons. It felt like a lot of different flavours and textures all at once. Not too sure it's something I'd try again. The servers were very attentive but nothing out of the ordinary I would say. There is usually a wait in the evenings. If I wasn't particularly inkling towards getting the cheese dip I would have chosen to go elsewhere in the area.

    Mexican Chicken Bowl

Came here with a group of friends around 9 pm after watching a movie. We got served immediately, and the waitress made sure all 10 of us sat comfortably. Since it was nighttime, I didn't feel like having something heavy, so I opted for the salads and bowl section. This was my first time at a Jack Astors location, but I noticed they had quite a few international dishes on their menu, which im not sure is a good or bad thing for a place like this. Our waitress gave us water and didn't come back after a while to get our orders. We sat their for a bit, unable to flag anyone down. Finally, I ordered the Mexican Chicken Bowl, which is my go-to order at a lot of places, so I was pretty excited to feast. However, when my plate (not really a bowl) came out, I was so disappointed at the size of it. It was quite small for 23 bucks, comparable to the appetizer my friend ordered. The rice was sooo mushy, borderline watery, and there was absolutely no flavor at all, except for the chicken - that was overly salty. I couldn't finish the chicken or rice because it was just not a good tasting dish. My other friends who ordered poutines were also disappointed with their dish and did not finish. For such a pricey meal with a small portion, I do not recommend and will not be returning.

Loaded potato was way too HARD

Dinner at Jack Astor's was a huge laughable mess . I originally wanted to bring my coworkers to either Baton Rouge or Smash Kitchen for our first annual Christmas dinner together, as they were both near our workplace, and in the same plaza, but our plan got changed last minute. Next year, I will just have to book BR weeks in advance!! Anyhow, half the table did not like their food and had to get their food entirely replaced and one did not like it so much that she then ate and drank nothing at the restaurant... ‍ despite her being one of the 3 that were adamant in changing my booking to doing a walk-in for Jack Astor's... IRONIC!! She and another friend had their entire hopes up for this place and I have never seen such disappointment in their eyes before. We came in expecting to wait 30 minutes, but then a hostess said that they had a spot for us almost immediately at the bar. This same hostess then said that she would clean the area up for us, walked away and then suddenly 'ditched' and never spoke to us again... wow, we were just ghosted by her... how rude. Oh well, we admired the Christmas lights after we called for another hostess to seat us as promised. While we waited for my fiancé to join us, I finished writing my last two Christmas cards and we started to order, but what a train wreck that all was... Anyhow, the waitress got so sick of us, that she literally asked if anyone else have problems with their food and I kept laughing every time someone had to send their food back to the kitchen, so I kept quiet about my spicy Tuna Poke Bowl salad... I just ate everything that was Pescatarian on the table, cried from the spiciness, talked to everyone in my beloved crew and laughed every time someone made a face or returned their food. This hardly ever happens with our breakfast outings. Usually only the youngest would ask for a change of coffee mug or maybe my had the wrong rawness for his steak, but nope not the usual suspects. Yesterday's dinner was such a total mess that I had to end my year-long silence and just write them a bad review, because they almost ruined my Christmas dinner celebration with my beloved coworkers!! I would never go back there, honestly. Received way too many eye rolls from our waitress... she was obviously so sick of us. But how do chefs get chicken fingers and salads wrong... First of all, the loaded potato was way too HARD to eat..., so the shiny one had it replaced for regular fries. I ordered lobster and crap dip to share, but all agreed that it tasted like bleh and had a lack of kick to it. Maybe could have added lemon or lime to it. Another friend wanted Jasmine rice with her chicken salad and it barely had any rice and instead way too much sauce that it looked and tasted like bean sprout soup!! My work mom asked for a MILD buffalo chicken salad, but TWICE it came out too spicy for her that she could not even touch the dish and had to get sweet potato fries instead, because honestly how can you mess that up?!? Ambiance-wise, if it were not for the fact that sports games were playing in the bar and everyone was already so loud to begin with, my laughter throughout the entire joke of a dinner would not have been drawn out... thank god I came with some of my favourite people and we all exchanged our Secret Santa gifts with one another, otherwise, JA almost ruined our entire night! I would have given it a 1 star but at least half the table were ok with our food. Despite mine being a bit spicier than I would have liked, I did enjoy my poke tuna and the salad had a lot of rich flavours and crunch unlike the usual typical boring lettuce in Caesar/garden salads... and they did not charge us for all of the full plates of food we sent back... otherwise, worst group dinner in this WHOLE year. Have not been to a JA in years and I will definitely not come back at all after this!!

We came here on the first weekend after restrictions were lifted. It was super busy but I made a reservation & didn't have to wait too long. Despite being closed for indoor dining after the holiday, the restaurant ran smoothly and service was great after reopening. They cut a lot of items off the menu. I can understand with the instability and unpredictability during this time. I had the fish & chips and loved it. The fish was light and crispy. I upgraded to truffle fries. I enjoyed the fries more than the dip which tasted like Caesar salad dressing. I would've preferred more like a garlic aioli. It was still good though. Would definitely go back.

I have come here a bunch of times. I think Jack Astors is my go-to family type eatery. I almost always order the same thing, and am not disappointed. There isn't anything super special about it, but for what it is I enjoy eating at Jack Astors. Definitely worth eating here if you want something easy.

Live dj, decent food, great service, decent drinks, good location. DJ keeps the vibes going. A little loud if you're looking to go on a date with someone new, but if you're socially awkward this is the place to be. The food was good. Some of it was alittle salty. We had mainly bar food so it makes sense. The garlic pan bread was kinda hard to eat. Tasted weird with the alcohol. Fish tacos were bomb. The truffle fries were really good. Chicken tenders were alittle bland and the fries were salty. Drinks tasted good but lacked alcohol. You can taste mainly sour and sweetness. I ordered an extra shot on the side to add to the drink. Service was quick and she was good. She was very polite and attentive. DJ played good music. I stayed alittle after because the vibes were good. We also had 2 glasses of wine at the end. The Riesling was pretty good but my red(Pinot noir) tasted like it's been out for too long. Pricing was ehhh. $160 CAD after the wine and tips. 4.2/5 on the experience.

I haven't been to Jack Astors for a long time. I went there recently and was pleasantly surprised how much it has changed in the last 10 years. It seems to be more upscale, more mature in terms of decor and atmosphere, yet the food is still fun while vastly improved in terms of quality and offerings. I decided to try the Holy Smokes BBQ Burger. It was awesome. Just as good as the Montana's burger I mentioned in that review. It was huge, tasted great, loaded with cheese, bacon, breaded fried onions, hot peppers, etc. Was great! Great presentation and quality. Everyone at the table had the same experience with what they ordered. Service was great as well.

Hot, tasty, served with a smile. Despite how busy it was, staff came to check on us frequently. I picked this place based on what saw on the menu Atmosphere: B In general, a standard sports bar and pub. Apparently there was an entire hockey team that had a celebration, so people were saying it was a longer lineup than usual. I like the giant TV in the middle of the main bar area. Noise level was ok for a sports bar to be. The area where we sat was a bit on the darker side, but still bright enough light to enjoy our meal Service: A+ We didn't wait to long for our table, maybe 20 minutes. After a few minutes of browsing, we were greeted by our server. I feel really crappy for saying this, but I forgot her name. About midway in our meal, I asked her how often do people say that she looks like Elizabeth Olsen? And she said at least once a day. When I informed our server about what I wanted to order, she was very honest and said that based on feedback, the dish did not receive great feedback. I did get reassurance though that if I was not satisfied with my order, then she would take the proper steps needed to enjoy my meal. I initially ordered my meal with onion rings, but it did come with fries. I did inform our service and after reconfirming the order, she did bring an extra side of onion rings as was my order. The error was acknowledged and addressed properly. Overall, she was very informative and was always keeping us up to date with the progress of our meal, although it did feel like to took a bit longer than I feel it should have. Food: A When I was looking for places, I browsed various venues. The dish that caught my eye for this place was the soft shell crab burger. The pic on the menu looked really impressive to me. There was a giant crab that could barely fit into the burger bun. That's what pushed me to try this place. When I received the burger, it was definitely not like in the picture. The arms and legs that were sticking out in the picture were not there, and it looked like a small shell was all that was included in the bread with some sauce. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't matching, I chose to ignore that view and still take a bite. In spite of not getting the appearance on the menu, I was very surprised by the taste. I could easily taste the crab shell with the chipotle sauce and it was delicious. I really did savor bite. Of course it could always be bigger, but the taste was so good I definitely was pleased with my choice. I provided my feedback to our server as well. My friend ordered a pulled pork sandwich and it looked pretty good. I was able to get a small bite, and although it was good, it wasn't anything that really stood out in my mind. Sides were definitely tasty. I liked the onion rings more than the fries. Didn't really feel like splurging on a beverage, kept it simple with a water Value: B In this time of rampant inflation, going out really is a luxury now. I have never been to this pub before, so I can't really compare it to previous visits to see if the serving size has changed. In general, I think that it's not uncommon to go to a sit down service and spend upwards of 30-40$ per person. My total bill came just under 20$ with tax and tip. It did help a bit with the extra side, but for the overall taste of my burger, I felt it was a fair price. As previously mentioned, of the burger was a bit bigger, that would have been better Overall: A- This establishment provided an excellent experience for a first visit. We went during prime time for eating out on a Friday evening, so its not really surprised for waiting for seating. Our server was excellent, my food was delicious and the service was too notch. Overall, I would definitely consider coming back here for a quick bite or to catch the Raptors when they start winning again.

I remember that I was very disappointed by the food, but at that time, I thought that they were just doing some experimentation to introduce interesting Asian fusion food in this culinarily underwhelming town of Whitby. Thought it would be a good try. So I decided to come back maybe after this place settled more, but then COVID hit. And we never had a chance to come back until today. Unfortunately, the food experience was even worse this time. And their beer went very far from my beer preference, serving a lot of beers with wacky flavors - looks like those beers are taking over their craft beer lineups. Food: We had # Charred octopus with seasoned tomato sauce, chorizo, Calabria chili, ink tapioca crisp. Well, Octopus did not have "charred" flavor. Surface had no crispness. The portion was huge, but the octopus was rubbery texture, dry. The tomato sauce underneath it was just too much for the octopus portion. Over-seasoned & salty tomato sauce with additional salt and spice from chorizo pieces. Do they want to make me thirsty to sell more beer? Yes that might have worked, and unfortunately it didn't. I waited for our server to order another beer but it took her more than 15 minutes to come to our table . # Jagerschnitzel : Essentially, schnitzel. Came with braised red cabbage, apple sauerkraut, Yukon mashed potato with "mushroom sauce". Schnitzel was endlessly huge but dry. Mushroom sauce tasted like can or some pre-made cheap & junky taste. A lot of mashed potatoes. Well suited for those who want to get a lot of comfort food to fill stomach with no intention of enjoying delicacy. Beer was OK. They have rotating beer selections on tap. We had tap beers such as IPA, Scotch Ale and Premium Pilsner. IPA was not as good, it left a lot of one-dimensional bitter aftertaste. If I want IPA then I will go to Town Brewery. Premium Pilsner was good. We also had Scotch Ale which was also good with nice Scotch aftertaste. Do I come back? No, if the food quality remains the same.
