I've been to this JA for a few times for the movie date nights, quick lunches with friends and just to grab a few pints. The bar area is bright and well laid out with a good mix of booths and high tables. I can't comment on the dining room as I have never sat in that section. I tend to prefer to sit in the bar area as it always seems more lively. This time, we came in to grab some drinks and grubs before catching a movie at the Landmark Cinema (my favorite theatre in Durham region). We sat at the bar and ordered the usual bar fare with a few pints of non-American beer. Their pan bread is a guilty pleasure with soft, pan baked bread sitting in a delicious mix of garlic butter, some herbs and grated parm. Yum! Their wings were on the small side but fried well with the accompanying dipping sauces (med Buffalo and ranch for the veggie sticks). It was exactly what you would expect. The bar staff were jovial and efficient and we had a great pre-movie dinner. We'll likely to continue coming here for the convenience of location and standard bar experience. read more

Jack's Pad Thai is one of my classic favourites! I ordered take out online and they now have a curbside pick up option. We selected the option and were told to call when we arrived. The parking lot is busy and does not have any spots designated for curbside pick up. I tried calling and no one picked up so I gave up and went inside. The line was out the door understandably they were busy but don't have curbside as an option if it's not feasible. When I walked past the line there were multiple bags set out with "curbside" written on them but no staff running them out. The two hostesses were friendly but seemed overwhelmed and just asked for my name and handed me my order to go on my way. The food was great and I was happy I ordered take out to skip the rush but some updates need to be made to curbside pickup option if it should stay as a take out option. read more

Yet another chain restaurant review. This location was the Whitby one in the Entertainment District. I find that this one is always busy when I go. They do have trivia nights and a lot of TV screens. Although, this time around we did only come for the appetizers. Nothing spectacular. This was my first time trying the Asian Wontons. It felt like a lot of different flavours and textures all at once. Not too sure it's something I'd try again. The servers were very attentive but nothing out of the ordinary I would say. Came here with a group of friends around 9 pm after watching a movie. We got served immediately, and the waitress made sure all 10 of us sat comfortably. Since it was nighttime, I didn't feel like having something heavy, so I opted for the salads and bowl section. This was my first time at a Jack Astors location, but I noticed they had quite a few international dishes on their menu, which im not sure is a good or bad thing for a place like this. Our waitress gave us water and didn't come back after a while to get our orders. We sat their for a bit, unable to flag anyone down. Finally, I ordered the Mexican Chicken Bowl, which is my go-to order at a lot of places, so I was pretty excited to feast. However, when my plate (not really a bowl) came out, I was so disappointed at the size of it. It was quite small for 23 bucks, comparable to the appetizer my friend ordered. The rice was sooo mushy, borderline watery, and there was absolutely no flavor at all, except for the chicken - that was overly salty. I couldn't finish the chicken or rice because it was just not a good tasting dish. My other friends who ordered poutines were also disappointed with their dish and did not finish. For such a pricey meal with a small portion, I do not recommend and will not be returning. read more

I originally wanted to bring my coworkers to either Baton Rouge or Smash Kitchen for our first annual Christmas dinner together, as they were both near our workplace, and in the same plaza, but our plan got changed last minute. Next year, I will just have to book BR weeks in advance!! Anyhow, half the table did not like their food and had to get their food entirely replaced and one did not like it so much that she then ate and drank nothing at the restaurant... ‍ despite her being one of the 3 that were adamant in changing my booking to doing a walk-in for Jack Astor's... IRONIC!! She and another friend had their entire hopes up for this place and I have never seen such disappointment in their eyes before. We came in expecting to wait 30 minutes, but then a hostess said that they had a spot for us almost immediately at the bar. This same hostess then said that she would clean the area up for us, walked away and then suddenly 'ditched' and never spoke to us again... wow, we were just ghosted by her... how rude. Oh well, we admired the Christmas lights after we called for another hostess to seat us as promised. While we waited for my fiancé to join us, I finished writing my last two Christmas cards and we started to order, but what a train wreck that all was... Anyhow, the waitress got so sick of us, that she literally asked if anyone else have problems with their food and I kept laughing every time someone had to send their food back to the kitchen, so I kept quiet about my spicy Tuna Poke Bowl salad... I just ate everything that was Pescatarian on the table, cried from the spiciness, talked to everyone in my beloved crew and laughed every time someone made a face or returned their food. This hardly ever happens with our breakfast outings. Usually only the youngest would ask for a change of coffee mug or maybe my had the wrong rawness for his steak, but nope not the usual suspects. Yesterday's dinner was such a total mess that I had to end my year-long silence and just write them a bad review, because they almost ruined my Christmas dinner celebration with my beloved coworkers!! I would never go back there, honestly. Received way too many eye rolls from our waitress... she was obviously so sick of us. But how do chefs get chicken fingers and salads wrong... First of all, the loaded potato was way too HARD to eat..., so the shiny one had it replaced for regular fries. I ordered lobster and crap dip to share, but all agreed that it tasted like bleh and had a lack of kick to it. Maybe could have added lemon or lime to it. Ambiance-wise, if it were not for the fact that sports games were playing in the bar and everyone was already so loud to begin with, my laughter throughout the entire joke of a dinner would not have been drawn out... thank god I came with some of my favourite people and we all exchanged our Secret Santa gifts with one another, otherwise, JA almost ruined our entire night! I would have given it a 1 star but at least half the table were ok with our food. Despite mine being a bit spicier than I would have liked, I did enjoy my poke tuna and the salad had a lot of rich flavours and crunch unlike the usual typical boring lettuce in Caesar/garden salads... and they did not charge us for all of the full plates of food we sent back... otherwise, worst group dinner in this WHOLE year. After Mini putt, we came here for a double date dinner with my husband's friends. We got seated pretty quickly outside on the patio. It was such a beautiful night out and it has been ages since we had jack astor's - I was excited to try their new food items. They had this amazing new drink it was so addicting. It was called the vanilla greyhound. GET IT. It was absolutely so delicious. I got the new truffle chicken mushroom pasta, it was super tasty. Would definitely get it again. My husband got the new york steak and baked potatoe. He said the potato was alright - doesn't compare the the one at the KEG but it he still demolished it. It said it wasn't as smooth inside (mash potato). He said his steak was ok. The service was good, she was attentive but since her shift was ending - she was pushing to give the bill and stuff. I wanted to ask for a refill when she did last call but she left so quickly. The food and drinks were pretty good, would definitely come again but prob sit inside. We came here on the first weekend after restrictions were lifted. It was super busy but I made a reservation & didn't have to wait too long. Despite being closed for indoor dining after the holiday, the restaurant ran smoothly and service was great after reopening. They cut a lot of items off the menu. I can understand with the instability and unpredictability during this time. I had the fish & chips and loved it. The fish was light and crispy. I upgraded to truffle fries. I enjoyed the fries more than the dip which tasted like Caesar salad dressing. I would've preferred more like a garlic aioli. It was still good though. Would definitely go back. read more

There isn't anything super special about it, but for what it is I enjoy eating at Jack Astors. Definitely worth eating here if you want something easy. read more

If in need of quick, easy service, this is not the place prepare to wait an hour to three for your food. After waiting an hour to order I waited another hour for pasta and it was the driest pasta I've ever had in my life, then I asked for some sauce, and it took 15 minutes to get to my table. We had mainly bar food so it makes sense. The garlic pan bread was kinda hard to eat. Tasted weird with the alcohol. Fish tacos were bomb. The truffle fries were really good. I haven't been to Jack Astors for a long time. I went there recently and was pleasantly surprised how much it has changed in the last 10 years. It seems to be more upscale, more mature in terms of decor and atmosphere, yet the food is still fun while vastly improved in terms of quality and offerings. I decided to try the Holy Smokes BBQ Burger. It was awesome. Just as good as the Montana's burger I mentioned in that review. It was huge, tasted great, loaded with cheese, bacon, breaded fried onions, hot peppers, etc. Was great! Great presentation and quality. Came here for a work Christmas lunch just before the holidays. I've been to Jack Astor's quite a few times in the Toronto locations before, but this is the first time I came to the Whitby location. I initally had trouble finding the entrance. After I parked I realized that the entrance is facing inside the pathway (they have a section that allows pedestrians to walk around "like a plaza" so all the entrances of restaurants were facing inwards in that sense. Staff are very nice, friendly. It was busy, so sometimes service was a bit slow. I ordered the sangria - quite a delightful drink! It comes with extra juice and wine on the side so you can adjust the sangria as you wish. However, for 12 bucks, it's a bit more pricey than sangria in other places. I ordered the garlic pan bread. Still as good as I remembered it :) Tho this time I found the bread just a bit on the drier side. I was expecting it to be more moist. Next I ordered what I always order, which was the chicken fingers and fries. Chicken fingers did not disappoint either, they were still just as good, though next time i might add the extra sauce!' I love their chicken fingers because they do their own breading. Therefore when I eat it, the crust just falls apart softly, giving it that lovely crispy yet juicy texture that I love about chicken tenders :) The only compliant is that I kind of wish the portions are bigger... When I"m paying 13/14 bucks for chicken fingers, I expect there to be more than 4 (see picture). My friend ordered the crispy quinoa chicken slaw. She said she really liked the slaw. In fact I was quite surprised how much greens was provided. I would've actually really liked that with chicken fingers :) Overall the food is pretty good and i love their chicken fingers, but at the price and quantity, I won't be coming here regularly just to get them. read more

We went to Jack Astors Whitby for a dinner out with our parents and two children. The table we were seated at had a solitary broken crayon ti divide between our two kids. When our waitress came to offer beverages she instructed us to look at the menu because she did not know what was on tap. Then, half of the drinks came to the table. we had to ask for the other beverages a second time. Before our drink issue was rectified our waitress Caitlyn was already trying to take our order for mains and one of us was not even at the table. I ordered steak (medium) and frites with sweet potato fries. After waiting almost an hour for food the steak was well done and dried out and the fries were the consistency of gravy. I let our waitress know that the fries were not edible and they were still on the bill when it came to pay. This Jack Astors is not worth attending unless your getting a beer after a movie- certainly not worth the 150$ bill. read more

Jack Astor's is a typical sports bar. In Canada, that's pretty typical - and pretty important. It's a very popular spot for locals who come, especially, for the beer cheese soup. Of course I had to try it! It was very good and comes served a shot glass of beer. But, just put it aside, our server told me, it's not real beer. Hmmm. That would've been far more fun for me if it was! The rest of my meal was okay. I ordered the fish & chips and it was a huge portion - more than I could eat. But really heavy on the breading. My recommendation? Stay with the beer soup and order a burger and a brewskie here. You won't go wrong! read more

Came to Jacks with a group of M's friends. We were a table of 12 with reservations (this place absolutely needs reservations..it's like there is no where in Whitby to go and grab food). Our server was very nice and accommodating. I asked if their pad Thai was vegan and he went to the kitchen to double check (although I thought it was strange he didn't suggest any alternatives either). M and I started with the guacamole and chips to starts and the lobster crab dip. M was in love with the dip. The guacamole was the worst guacamole I have ever tasted. It was 1. Watery and 2. Full of white onions...like so many. For mains, I had their pad Thai and I thought the sauce was very heavy and greasy. It was also really overpriced for what I got. The only saving grace? However what did disappoint, was this chicken grilled cheese. It said it had chicken lime and tortilla chips inside the grilled cheese sandwich, but when the sandwich arrived it wasn't as described. It was dry, had hot peppers and they had you dip the sandwich in something like tomato sauce. The flavours didn't go well at all. read more

I normally try to avoid franchises but I somehow stumbled upon this Jack Astors in Whitby and had such a wonderful experience that I promised myself I would yelp about it! I went on a Friday night and wow - it was bumping! What an incredible atmosphere. I especially liked the layout of this specific location with their heavy emphasis on booths. In terms of food, we stuck with the usual suspects and they did not disappoint. They did not cheap out on the cheese curds on my poutine like other places so that's bonus points right away. I also got Jacks famous chicken fingers (Buffalo sauce of course) and they lived up to their famous moniker. My wife got the bow tie pasta. Simple dish but a classic that always hits the spot. Overall, the food, service and atmosphere were great and completely blew past my expectations. If you're ever in the Durham region make sure you drop in! read more

Sadly, our most recent visit this evening will be the last time we ever go to Jack Astor's. We arrived at 6:25 and got our names on the list for a table indoors and were told it would be a 15 minute wait. It definitely took longer than than that for us to get a table but that was ok... It took our server forever to come to the table to greet us and offer drinks and it took even longer to get drinks. This was a trend that continued through the night. One of my friends was asking about some old menu items (and yes, complaining to the server, we know it's not her fault they changed the menu) and whether they were still available or could be made; sadly, they weren't. Our friend was upset but I couldn't blame her. All of our favourite menu items are gone: sauced up chicken fingers in honey garlic or the sweet chili, the garlic parmesan dipping sauce for fingers, shanghai lettuce wraps, the jasmine rice bowl... We didn't leave the restaurant until 8:40. That's over two hours for waiting on a table (20 mins) drinks, appetizers and mains. Waaaay too long. It took so long for our mains to come that I completely lost my appetite. I ordered the beer and cheese soup and a poutine. Soup was good, spicier than I remember, but the poutine felt sloppy. I ordered a "beachy" drink and it was so sweet, it was like drinking candy. The apps we had were good as usual, the cheese pan bread and bruschetta (although I feel like they sliced the bruschetta bread really thin compared to all the other times we've had it). Service was lacking; our server avoided our table and I could tell she knew we weren't happy but stayed away as a result. She was pleasant but she rarely came to the table, even when all the tables around us were empty. Someone else was bringing drinks and our food but that's just how they operate service. Took forever to get water. The longer the evening went on, the more unimpressed I became. The worst part was that the dining room was EMPTY. Almost all the tables near us were empty by the time we got our appetizers. So why the hell did our dinner service take TWO HOURS???? I know they had a busy patio but that doesn't add up if the dining room is empty. The most involved thing our table ordered was a steak. The menu has basically removed all the good old favourites in favor of new stuff that really didn't appeal to anyone at the table. The expos were the best people we dealt with. The two guys were happy when they came to the table and seemed genuinely happy to be bringing us food! In a plaza with so many good restaurants, you've gotta be better than that. Came here for supper this evening. Had the Board Nachos. Ordered sour cream on the side and didn't receive it. My friend also ordered them with no cilantro but still got cilantro on her nachos (she was told there was none on it when the waitress delivered them to the table). She also did not get the sides she ordered. The nachos are not filling so I had to order sweet potatoes fries with my order to get filled up. My friends had desserts which were delicious. I am. It sure why but as soon as the sun went down, we had bugs attacking us at our table including crawling up and down my hand before I killed it. Could see bugs flying in the lights. I recently went to Jack Astor's with a large group, and it was my first experience. My colleagues described it as a Canadian TGI Friday's. But I'll have to say that my experience far exceeded TGI. First of all, the place is more trendy and upscale than TGI Friday. Secondly, the service here was amazing. The attractive and enthusiastic servers were responsive, never responded to our many requests with a "no" or a sneer, they were fun, and my food and drink came promptly. I enjoyed the calamari, which was standard but tasted fresh and was served in a large portion. I had the chicken and shrimp fajitas -- which was an accommodation to my request for both -- and they were delicious. I loved the spice or marinade that they used. While Jack Astor's is not going to win a James Beard Award for wine or innovative cuisine, the food is right on point, the price is reasonable, and the service is excellent. Food is okay as well as the seating arrangement nothing special though, staff is fairly freindly and they have a good selection of food bit nothing stands out (as I said earlier) It was about a twenty minutes for 4 people to get there full meal which Is pretty decent for my family and I, speaking of family they enjoyed it as well although where we were sitting none of the televisions were in our view If anyones going there expecting a unique experience don bother, but still a good choice if your looking for a meal after the theater,laser tag or any of the other activities in the area might stop there again but wont go out of my way (On a side note we had to wait fifteen minutes for a booth) read more

Always a good spot for lunch or dinner. Fast, friendly and if you have any issue with a meal they insist on making it right. Although I prefer family owned and unique spots, Jack Astor's has a winning recipe and I am rarely disappointed. ( One pet peeve however is that I was just told by my server that their pint glasses of beer are 18 ounces and they they try and upsize you for a fee to Jacks size... How about giving me an actual 20 oz pint in the first place?) read more
