Also, it's different here because we didn't really need to order via mobile and instead do it through a kiosk or in-person. I prefer going through that process since it's normally how I order food. I always wanted to try candied yams and gotta say that they're very sweet and delicious. The beef chili beans tastes good and fried fish is well seasoned. The cornbread really hits the spot though since it's soft and fresh. Personally, I prefer the other location better because of the atmosphere and vibes, but this one is still good to go to though. They have numerous tables and seating areas. I ordered the hot link meal, and the hot link was amazing. It was just spicy enough and extremely tasty. The size of the sides is really generous; I couldn't finish my delicious mac and cheese and greens. They do provide to-go containers if you want to take food home. The pork was pretty good though it did need a bit of sauce on it. I thought about ordering the fried fish or nachos, but was looking for something slightly lighter! This was my señor or third time coming to Jackie's but my first time at this location. The service was good as we were greeted as we came in through the door. The staff were extremely friendly and patient. I got the fried fish with a side of coleslaw and mac and cheese (it came with cornbread) and a watermelon lemonade to drink. The fried fish with the tartar sauce is good. The fish is crispy and thinly sliced. The coleslaw has some spices in it so it has a little kick to it. The Mac and cheese is okay, didn't really leave a unique impression on me to make it stand out from other mac and cheese's I've tried before. The watermelon lemonade is pretty good. I showed up at my scheduled time and was told my order was being worked on. Then 30 minutes later I'm told I'm actually at the wrong location. That should have been clarified right away instead of wasting my time. And I wasn't the only person dealing with that, so clearly there's a communication issue. As for the food, the biggest problem is the cost compared to the portion sizes. The "Hondo" hot link was basically just a jumbo hot dog. It was okay but nothing special for the price. The gumbo had decent flavor but tasted like it had been sitting and wasn't fresh. The rice portion was honestly disrespectful. It was just a couple spoonfuls for a $15 item. On top of that, I didn't even get the cornbread I paid for. For over $30, this just wasn't worth it. Between the confusion, the wait, the small portions, and the missing item, I won't be going back to the South First location. Ate lunch here over the weekend and had a wonderful experience. The dining room is a beautiful open modern space with about 4-5 large screen TVs for your sports viewing pleasure. You can order food at the front counter or through QR codes at each table (the menu online offered more options than the printed menu, for sides and such). We got the smoked pulled pork plate with collard greens and beef chili beans (made with smoked brisket), and the rib tip plate with mac n cheese and extra corn bread on the side. To drink, we tried the juju house special, which was a sort of grape flavored kool-aid concoction. The collard greens were just a tad salty, but other than that, we enjoyed everything about our meals. The cornbread was tasty, the mac n cheese had the perfect creaminess and flavor. The meats were tender and so yummy, those rip tips smothered in bbq sauce particularly satisfying. Wow, we were impressed. We had only been to the original Jackie's Place until now, and the newer downtown restaurant seemed to provide a taste and experience ten times better. Staff and service warm and friendly, wait time for our food roughly ten minutes or so, and a welcoming vibe with 90's rnb playing in the background. Amazing food and lovely service! I've been to both the original North First St and SoFa locations (take-out only). Service has always been prompt and friendly, truly treating you like family. The food is incredible - I've gotten the fried chicken wings (enormous! and more flavorful than a drumstick), rib tips, whole ribs, and a bunch of the sides like the collard greens, mac and cheese, candied yams, and cornbread. Everything has been delicious. The ambiance in the SoFa location is pretty much "SoFa location" (I believe they took over the old Trieste location or next door) with a smallish bottom floor and a loft, and the North First location has an interesting historic vibe that adds to the Southern food restaurant ambiance. After a not so good experience at a whiskey tasting, my husband and I needed some real food on our stomachs. I found Jackie's Place online and decided to try it. I'm so glad we did. We got there and were immediately seated. The waiter explained their ordering process which was different but very cool. You scan a QR code and order from your phone - it even allows you to select some things to go while other item for eating in. We were greeted immediately after walking in, and I saw her continuing to greet every customer as they came in as well which was very welcoming. It's a nice vibe inside and their restrooms were clean. Loved the music and the signs all around. You can either order on the self-serve kiosk, scan the barcode at the table and order on your phone, or order with the cashier. They do want you to clean up after yourself by putting the trays away and throwing your trash away when you're done. They also call your name when your order is ready instead of bringing it to your table. Sadly, we were disappointed by the food because we had high expectations after hearing lots of good things about this place. My favorite items were the fried chicken and fries. The chicken was so crispy and juicy and huge. The hot link was beef and not pork, but it wasn't very flavorful? My bf's cornbread was soft and moist but mine was dry. Now this location has a weekends bar but you can buy beers during the week the food though has not changed, we went with the Gumbo, a la cart catfish, hotlink and a beef brisket sandwich. The meat on the brisket GAWD it literally melts in you mouth and the smokey flavor and just the tenderness 10000/10, gumbo is southern style which is amazingly delicious. Food and Service = 5 After watching Check Please where they showcased their N. 1st Street site, I was eager to try Jackie's Place sooner than later and with the help of Too Good To Go, I did! I went autopilot, driving to the N. 1st Street place to pick up surprise bag when learned they opened a 2nd site in downtown, which has an urban warehouse feel to it fitting with the area. With a 30 minute window and driving around to find a spot to park or legally double park, I was able to get my bag with 5 min to spare. This spot is great for folks staying at one of downtown hotels, on campus at SJSU or work nearby. For me, the N. 1st street is easier because of their own parking with overflow nearby. Plus nice to smell their bbq meats cooking in the parking lot smoker. Staff patient and friendly even though I can imagine they were eager to go home since picked up food after closing. At home excited to dive into my edible bounty with sufficient protein and sides to share between two people or make 3-4 meals for an individual. I got hot link sausages, bbq chicken thighs, corn bread muffin, Mac & Cheese, collard greens, chili beans, and sweet potatoes/yams. As for my first Jackie's Place meal, it was an enjoyable preview. My fave sides were the traditional mac & cheese, corn muffin & collard greens. They would make the perfect plant forward meal when craving soul food, but need a break from meat. The yams were too sweet for my palate, but will be perfect for those with a sweet tooth. The bbq beans are a satisfying meal in itself. Layered with mac n cheese, your choice of meat, pico, a green sauce, and fried onion. Great portions, definitely plan to have leftovers to bring home! So Happy to have this place, so close to work. If you were a person that likes Southern cooking this is the place to go. I had the chicken waffles with the peach cobbler and a glass of watermelon lemonade. The waffle was crunchy on the outside but moist in the inside paired with the peach cover with such a pleasant surprise. You get a nice bite of the cinnamon and peach that just makes you happy. The fried chicken is insanely good first bite you are hooked from the breading to the moistness of the chicken. You get three large wings that are tender to the point that falls off the bones. If you are counting calories, this is not the place for you. This is the comfort food zone. My coworker had the bbq pork sandwich with mac & cheese, and he said he felt like he was back home in Texas. if you're from Texas, you know that's a big compliment. The lemon pepper wings were flavorful on the outside, but the meat inside was still raw and white. The candied yams came in a whole piece and wasn't flavorful at all. It tasted very plain due to probably being whole and not mashed together in the sauce. Ambiance was really nice and clean!
