rib plate with collard greens and rice and gravy
Julia T.

Lively spot with plenty of indoor seating. Greeted when I got there, rib plate was enough for 2 for $40 with sides. Great quality meat and well-needed soul food in Downtown san jose. Parking can be hard to find depending on the time.

I'm glad that Jackie's Place has opens another location at Downtown San Jose! It's very good for SJSU students and other locals to try soul food here. The place is smaller compared to the first location, which is at north. The service here is good though since we can serve ourselves some complementary water as well as togo containers for leftovers. Also, it's different here because we didn't really need to order via mobile and instead do it through a kiosk or in-person. I prefer going through that process since it's normally how I order food. I always wanted to try candied yams and gotta say that they're very sweet and delicious. The beef chili beans tastes good and fried fish is well seasoned. The cornbread really hits the spot though since it's soft and fresh. Personally, I prefer the other location better because of the atmosphere and vibes, but this one is still good to go to though. If you care more about the food here, then it won't be much of a difference. If you also care about atmosphere, I recommend going to the other location which is at north.

Nestled downtown SJ this Jackie's location did not disappoint. The eatery is large with plenty of seating for any size group. Picked up the menu and restaurant staff told us it was condensed and the full menu was via QR code (needed info lol). We each got a plate and the food was portioned very well (had leftovers and gave some away). I choose Mac and greens for my sides and every bite was magical.

Awesome to have this spot in downtown San Jose. It was a busy Saturday. I love that you can order at the register, through a self serve kiosk or via a QR code at the table. Staff does a wonderful job helping folks, cleaning tables, and getting food out quickly. Also, where else can you get grape Kool-aid and legit sweet tea. Food all around is solid. Catfish is standout.

Fish and brisket with cornbread, Mac and cheese and steamed rice.

Came to give this place another try and it was just ok. The fish was nicely cooked but the coating can be too much after several bites. It definitely needs a dipping sauce. Wish they had tartar sauce or malt vinegar. It's just too dry, rough and not pleasant on the palate after several bites. Brisket was nice and soft and was good with their bbq sauce that was readily available at the table. Definitely added the hot sauce that was there as I like my bbq to be sweet and spicy. Cornbread was good. It is small and I wished they had honey. Mac and cheese was good but for me could be a tad more cheesier. We did self order which was quick. And it's quite spacious inside and plenty of seating. Like many businesses in a downtown area, parking can be difficult.

Loved it! It's like chilling at a family bbq with good food and beats. The DJ played a great selection of songs - had us ALL grooving in our seats. I saw many head bobbing and bodies swaying. I was looking forward to trying the oxtail but it was sold out, along with other popular items. The sweet tea is super sweet - I had to water it down a bit. The watermelon lemonade is really good.

3 stars as I hope this is one time issue and not a the standard. This was a mothers day disaster. $40 for over cooked, hard, flavorless briskest is outrages even for bay price points. I've enjoyed Jackies place when they first started on 6th st and even donated to their go fund me after the fire. I'm sad to see quality get this terrible and hope they go back to serving quality food. My mom and I tried splitting a plate and had to give up.

Hot link plate

We were walking around downtown looking for a place to eat, and Jackie's Place beckoned. I really liked the decor, which is a lot of white walls with red accents. They have numerous tables and seating areas. I ordered the hot link meal, and the hot link was amazing. It was just spicy enough and extremely tasty. The size of the sides is really generous; I couldn't finish my delicious mac and cheese and greens. They do provide to-go containers if you want to take food home. The pork was pretty good though it did need a bit of sauce on it. I thought about ordering the fried fish or nachos, but was looking for something slightly lighter! Also noticed they have gumbo which looked really good! The woman who took our order was very personable. You can also order on a screen or with a QR code at your table.

This was my señor or third time coming to Jackie's but my first time at this location. The service was good as we were greeted as we came in through the door. The staff were extremely friendly and patient. I got the fried fish with a side of coleslaw and mac and cheese (it came with cornbread) and a watermelon lemonade to drink. The fried fish with the tartar sauce is good. The fish is crispy and thinly sliced. The coleslaw has some spices in it so it has a little kick to it. The Mac and cheese is okay, didn't really leave a unique impression on me to make it stand out from other mac and cheese's I've tried before. The watermelon lemonade is pretty good. It is a bit sweet but it does taste like candy. Loved the cornbread though!! Wish I could have 10 of them to go I'd go back again... especially to try some of their desserts.

Hot dog, or what they call a hot link with a piece of cornbread?

This experience was confusing and honestly not worth the money. I always go to the North First Street location, so that's where I went for pickup. I showed up at my scheduled time and was told my order was being worked on. Then 30 minutes later I'm told I'm actually at the wrong location. That should have been clarified right away instead of wasting my time. And I wasn't the only person dealing with that, so clearly there's a communication issue. As for the food, the biggest problem is the cost compared to the portion sizes. The "Hondo" hot link was basically just a jumbo hot dog. It was okay but nothing special for the price. The gumbo had decent flavor but tasted like it had been sitting and wasn't fresh. The rice portion was honestly disrespectful. It was just a couple spoonfuls for a $15 item. On top of that, I didn't even get the cornbread I paid for. For over $30, this just wasn't worth it. Between the confusion, the wait, the small portions, and the missing item, I won't be going back to the South First location. Honestly, I left more confused than full, which is never a good sign.

Ate lunch here over the weekend and had a wonderful experience. The dining room is a beautiful open modern space with about 4-5 large screen TVs for your sports viewing pleasure. You can order food at the front counter or through QR codes at each table (the menu online offered more options than the printed menu, for sides and such). We got the smoked pulled pork plate with collard greens and beef chili beans (made with smoked brisket), and the rib tip plate with mac n cheese and extra corn bread on the side. To drink, we tried the juju house special, which was a sort of grape flavored kool-aid concoction. The collard greens were just a tad salty, but other than that, we enjoyed everything about our meals. The cornbread was tasty, the mac n cheese had the perfect creaminess and flavor. The meats were tender and so yummy, those rip tips smothered in bbq sauce particularly satisfying. Wow, we were impressed. We had only been to the original Jackie's Place until now, and the newer downtown restaurant seemed to provide a taste and experience ten times better. Staff and service warm and friendly, wait time for our food roughly ten minutes or so, and a welcoming vibe with 90's rnb playing in the background. There's nothing I didn't love about this place during our recent visit.

Got lunch on a weekend. Restaurant was half full. No wait. Workers were pretty welcoming. But I felt better service at the other location. This place was clean. We ordered the Scoop Nacho, Smoked Brisket Plate and Fried Chicken Wings Plate. The flavors in the Nachos were good. The Brisket could have been better but with the sauce, was fine. The chicken really hit! Parking isn't easy but it's worth a try. Soul Food

Can never go wrong! Great food, awesome service! First time visiting this location and it is so cute! Plenty of seating and the vibe matches the location down the street. I grabbed a couple plates to go and could hardly wait to eat once I was handed the bag.

Ordering was easy we scanned a barcode put in our order and got our food within 10 minutes. Great customer service very clean and while we were eating, we could see that the employees put a lot of care into cleaning the tables and seats. Plenty of parking in back very spacious. They have overhead fans, but no need to turn them on because the restaurant was cool and airy not stuffy or hot. The waiters or servers always checked up on us to make sure that we were OK and if we needed anything else. This restaurant knows what they're doing! Added to one of my fav spots!

Touch of Soul Soul Food Restaurant delivered one of the best comfort‑food experiences we have had in a long time. Every dish tasted like it was made with care, tradition, and a whole lot of love. The catfish was perfectly seasoned with a crispy golden crust and tender, flaky meat inside. The chicken wings were just as impressive --well‑seasoned, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The sides were the real stars, though. The yams were rich and buttery with just the right amount of sweetness. The potato salad was creamy and flavorful without being heavy. The greens had that slow‑cooked, soulful taste you can't fake, and the macaroni and cheese was exactly what mac and cheese should be--cheesy, comforting, and baked just right. And those corn muffins? Soft, warm, and the perfect finishing touch. From start to finish, the meal felt like a true home‑cooked experience. If you're looking for soul food that hits every note--flavor, comfort, and authenticity--Touch of Soul is absolutely worth the visit. The foot is priced just right, especially in today's economy. One last thing, the service was AWESOME!!!!

The first time I visited, it was late in the evening and they had already sold out of several items. The food I did try was average at best--about a 2.5/5. The second time, I went with someone who knew the owner, and the experience was completely different. Everything was excellent--easily a 5/5. Based on that visit, I felt confident enough to place a large catering order for a Black History Month event at my job. I ordered yams, dressing with gravy, greens, mac & cheese, fried catfish, fried chicken, cornbread, peach cobbler, and German chocolate cake. The total came to $590, which I paid immediately after confirming via text. I requested that the food be ready by 2 PM since the event started at 3 PM. When I arrived, nothing was ready. There was also confusion about my order--they initially only prepared one dessert, even though I was charged for both cobbler and cake. I had to show proof of my order to resolve that. As the food slowly became available, I was handed trays one at a time with no assistance, meaning I had to carry everything to my car by myself. On top of that, the cornbread I ordered was never provided. The food wasn't fully ready until around 3 PM, which caused delays for my event. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match my previous experience either. The fried catfish pieces were extremely small--more like nuggets than full portions. The dressing was undercooked and even had large turkey bones in it, which was unacceptable. The greens had excessive liquid, which I had to drain before transporting them. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Order accuracy was a 1/5, timeliness and service (including lack of assistance) was a 1/5, and food quality was about a 2.5/5. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. For catering orders or anything from a local soul food restaurant I'd highly recommend Ys Choice.

She had heard about this place from a client that she had worked with a couple weeks ago. The place had a really cool vibe to it; it's like you're stepping into a more intimate, Cracker Barrel. We were seated by the front of house pretty quickly. The space could hold quite a few people, there is a bar area and outside seating. We sat in the back by the kitchen. When we got there, we ordered a couple drinks and a lot of food. I had the okey-dokey artichokey and my partner had the respect your elders drink; both were strong and tasty. It went well with our appetizers of fried okra and fried calamari. I really enjoyed the jalapeño aïoli that came with the okra so much that I started dipping the calamari in it. The calamari coating on the outside was a lot heavier than what I was used to, but it was still really tasty. For our main entrées, I got the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens and my partner got the porch burger with fries. The fried chicken was cooked perfectly. It wasn't dry. It was juicy and I really liked putting their homemade hot sauce on the chicken and greens. The habanero hot sauce was really spicy, but I liked how sweet it was. My partner's burger was cooked perfectly and it was a big portion. I definitely recommend this place to someone who is bold enough to go on a date and still eat with their hands. Somehow, this was elevated southern food, which could be shown by the prices, but I think it's worth it once in a while.
