I've been meaning to try this place for some time now. With all the great reviews and overall rating I had some high expectations. The oxtail was amazing! Fall off the bone tender. However gravy and rice wasn't anything amazing. I'm not sure if it was just an off day but I took off a far for the collard greens and another one for the dry corn brea muffin. Greens were bitter sour tasting. I couldn't finish it. It wasn't for me. I love collard greens too!! The corn muffin was overly dry. The taste is really good but I couldn't get past the dryness. I'm sorry! I'd try again to see if it was an off day as I'm really rooting for this place. Great customer service!

cornbread

I ordered delivery via Uber Eats from here yesterday (Jan 2nd), and I have mixed feelings about the meal. I'll start with the positives: The cornbread was delicious--fresh with great texture. The catfish was also on point and actually pretty well-seasoned. However, the sides were a major letdown. I had the black-eyed peas, cabbage, collards, and mac & cheese, and they were all surprisingly bland. I understand that a restaurant often has to "cook for everyone" and might try to keep things neutral, but this is Southern cooking. It relies on seasoning! Even just a little salt would have gone a long way. It's hard to enjoy Soul Food when the sides taste like they haven't been seasoned at all. I enjoyed the fish, but they really need to step it up on the flavor for the sides.

Veggie Plate with a side of cornbread and snapper.

I've been wanting to try Scend's so I finally decided to order through Door Dash for pick up. I'm trying to lighten up one my meat consumption so I decided to order the Veggie Plate (which comes with 4 sides): Yams, Mac N Cheese, Black Eyed Peas, and Greens. I also ordered a side of cornbread and a piece of snapper. The Veggie Plate was $13.99, cornbread was $2 I believe, and the Snapper was about $4. Everything was seasoned well for me and was delicious. My order was ready upon arrival.

The snapper was pretty good! Nice and crispy
Ms. Good K.

Honest review. This place WASN'T it. Customer service was beautiful, but the food disappointed. The fried snapper was pretty good and crispy. I do not appreciate frozen prawns. They cost toooo much not to be prepared fresh like the fish. The green were tender but had a sweet taste that I didn't absolutely love, at all. The Mac n cheese was gritty, not cheesy enough, and I couldn't finish it! Texture is equally important to taste. The peach cobbler. I forgot to take a picture but it was also GRITTY! Why?? The taste was ok but the grittiness took away significantly from the overall dish. Would I come here again? Probably not! So why the 5 stars? Customer service and location of the B.O.B is stellar.

Red snapper

I ordered 10 pieces snapper and 8 pieces of so called prawns. The shrimp was heavily breaded not much flavor.. The red snapper was not good at all. Everything I ordered did not taste good.

Fried Catfish with Coleslaw

Came in here a few nights ago and picked up some fried catfish & lemon pepper wings. The 6 piece catfish I got was fried to perfection and had good flavor. Good size pieces too. The coleslaw that came with fish was one of the better ones. The lemon pepper wings was okay, not enough flavor and over cooked a little, but still edible. The restaurant look very clean inside and the service was great, friendly!! I will return to try others menu items.

Fried chicken wing and snapper, red beans, and rice

For years, I passed this location up and I've always wanted to stop and give them a try. in February my husband and I stopped by and I ordered the fried chicken wing meal with a side of red beans and rice and collards. My husband went with the oxtails over rice and gravy. My honest opinion is that the food lacked salt and seasoning, and I am someone who does not add a lot of salt to my food. The chicken and snapper were cooked to perfection as were the oxtails, but they needed a little bit of salt. I have the same opinion for the sides. Everything is made with love by the hands of hard-working people and I recommend you come and give it a try and form your own opinion.

This was how all the wings looked without any condiments.

This was my first uber eats delivery. I thought I had to worry about the Uber driver but it was actually the food. It was terrible the chicken wings were a little burnt and had no flavor at all. The fish had a tiny amount of flavor and the greens were actually ok but I had to pay an extra $5 for a small container. It said the meal came with 2 sides but I had to pay for one I guess. I've heard good things about scends so maybe it was just an off day, but I probably won't be going back!

Rip tips Bread Candy sweet potato Meat loaf Muffin

This was my first time visiting this restaurant. Small, but lots of history on the walls. I ordered rib tips size a quarter maybe a dime about a cup worth with a lot of smoke flavor it was overwhelming. Price $17 with one side order which was mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was low salt. I also ordered the meatloaf because it was on special and I didn't want any gravy. Came with cornbread dressing soaked in sage and seasoning. The meatloaf has no taste! Maybe that's why the cornbread dressing with overwhelming sage ingredients, would hold up the meatloaf. However, neither was good alone. This was $17 the container had half a cup of crumbling, sage dressing. Maybe that was enough because I couldn't eat a spoonful. The candied yams were very sweet little cinnamon or butter. I make the statements because I once cooked for 13 years and a little seasoning in food won't kill it. The candied yams were sugar on sweet potatoes. The cornbread was so dry it crumbled at the touch, a little oil wouldn't hurt. The bread slices given couldn't get any cheaper. Overall, I couldn't even eat the meal. My total was almost $ 60, adding in desserts. They had a homemade cake in there. They were truly homemade cakes. The peach cobbler was delicious. A home run! The owner treated his staff respectfully they seemed to appreciate him. The restaurant was clean not many people were eating in, at the time I was there. There was a sign on the table of talking about gratitude being added to the check when eating in, because of staffing and food prices. I can understand that but first you have to give better quality of food and enough, for the price you're charging. The staff was wonderful. Wait time was rather long but they got the job done.

The young lady behind the register who took the order was on point with great service and winning attitude which we dont see often at establishments in the town. Ordered a 3 way combo ribs, link and tri tip, with greens and Mac & cheese. The ribs were the size of riblets/baby back ribs (see photo). The tri tip was overcooked and both the links and tri tip were not properly cut, yes there is a way meat should be cut and the knife was dull. The Mac & cheese was a clump of cheese noodles but the greens were decent. Sauce was not spicy at all but maybe it was mild instead of medium. What they lack in flavor they make up in portion but if youre a quality over quantity person like myself, this is some bs. After I got thru all the links, they gave me more links thank anything and maybe 1/2lb of baby back ribs. The food was underwhelming. This is not the original owner or the ppl from 8yrs ago. Who gave them world champion has to mean they have a diverse team cause this is not the best bbq in town. This is my honest opinion as a Oakland native who grew up on Flints BBQ and not a paid influencer.

Touch of Soul Soul Food Restaurant delivered one of the best comfort‑food experiences we have had in a long time. Every dish tasted like it was made with care, tradition, and a whole lot of love. The catfish was perfectly seasoned with a crispy golden crust and tender, flaky meat inside. The chicken wings were just as impressive --well‑seasoned, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The sides were the real stars, though. The yams were rich and buttery with just the right amount of sweetness. The potato salad was creamy and flavorful without being heavy. The greens had that slow‑cooked, soulful taste you can't fake, and the macaroni and cheese was exactly what mac and cheese should be--cheesy, comforting, and baked just right. And those corn muffins? Soft, warm, and the perfect finishing touch. From start to finish, the meal felt like a true home‑cooked experience. If you're looking for soul food that hits every note--flavor, comfort, and authenticity--Touch of Soul is absolutely worth the visit. The foot is priced just right, especially in today's economy. The first time I visited, it was late in the evening and they had already sold out of several items. The food I did try was average at best--about a 2.5/5. The second time, I went with someone who knew the owner, and the experience was completely different. Everything was excellent--easily a 5/5. Based on that visit, I felt confident enough to place a large catering order for a Black History Month event at my job. I ordered yams, dressing with gravy, greens, mac & cheese, fried catfish, fried chicken, cornbread, peach cobbler, and German chocolate cake. The total came to $590, which I paid immediately after confirming via text. I requested that the food be ready by 2 PM since the event started at 3 PM. When I arrived, nothing was ready. There was also confusion about my order--they initially only prepared one dessert, even though I was charged for both cobbler and cake. I had to show proof of my order to resolve that. As the food slowly became available, I was handed trays one at a time with no assistance, meaning I had to carry everything to my car by myself. On top of that, the cornbread I ordered was never provided. The food wasn't fully ready until around 3 PM, which caused delays for my event. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match my previous experience either. The fried catfish pieces were extremely small--more like nuggets than full portions. The dressing was undercooked and even had large turkey bones in it, which was unacceptable. The greens had excessive liquid, which I had to drain before transporting them. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Order accuracy was a 1/5, timeliness and service (including lack of assistance) was a 1/5, and food quality was about a 2.5/5. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. For catering orders or anything from a local soul food restaurant I'd highly recommend Ys Choice.
