    Lump crab cakes $19

We dined in at J. Wilson's as a group of 3. The middle stone wall area was unique. I liked the looks of it. I don't know if J. Wilson's is known for their steaks. I had the medium rare bone-in ribeye for $49. It was slightly over cooked but not by much. I didn't like the taste of the rub/sauce on the steak as it tasted a little sour. I've never eaten a steak at a steakhouse with this taste. It was certainly unique. I loved the lump crab cakes though; very moist and creamy. The service was great. Our waiter was attentive and offered a free coffee cake for a birthday celebration. J. Wilson's has an average 4.3 stars on Yelp which is really good. However, the bone-in ribeye was underwhelming. I would rather pay $20-30 more for a more exceptional steak. P.S. my brother also could not finish his KC Strip.

    J. Wilson's was great. It was a super nice restaurant, and the service was above and beyond. We took my daughter for her birthday, and she loved it. My Miso Short rib was so good. I will definitely be going back here.

My wife and I came here for brunch for our anniversary. We've been to Lawrence numerous times but never heard of J. Wilson's but it is definitely a new favorite of ours. She had the Ultimate Biscuits and Gravy and I had the Pancetta Eggs Benedict. Both serving sizes were filling and the flavors were outstanding. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the food and incredibly personable. We would really like to come back for dinner as the atmosphere is more for dates and less "kid friendly". It was more laid back for it being brunch but I would assume that for dinner, it would be best to wear casual clothing--no sandals, shorts, or t-shirts. I also would love to check out the cocktails as their whiskey selection looked promising. I noticed as we were leaving they have Union Horse Distilling Co. bottles and a barrel by the door. Union Horse is always a win in my book. Great place. Great food.

I've been coming to this area for about 4 years, and I was seriously getting tired of the college town food. Even the "upscale" places. Very randomly, my daughter suggested this restaurant - she had never been before, but heard some good things. This is now our go-to for visits. We started by splitting a Caesar salad and had the bread service. The salad was fantastic - a traditional Caesar in the best way. This would be a great lunch with grilled chicken. I'd skip the bread service next time, just because it wasn't necessary. Entrees did not disappoint. My daughter (a normally picky eater) had the rigatoni with vodka sauce and chicken. It was really great, with just a hint of chili flake to make it interesting. I had the miso short rib on the waiters recommendation. Just wow. It fit the fall weather perfectly. It's not for those keeping calorie counts, but I'd recommend it to anyone who likes meat. Dessert was another recommendation: a coffee cake with custard sauce and berries. Again, a winner. The place was great, from the ambiance to the food to the hospitality. And I expected the bill to be much higher. You can't go wrong coming here if you're looking for a great dinner.

My husband and I stopped in one evening for happy hour and sat at the bar. It's a very elegant bar area as well as the rest of the restaurant. Great for date night! We tried some HH offerings and then had dinner. We were waited on by Chelsea and Bruce. Chelsea made me a really beautiful drink called Winter Harbor!! After that I had a lovely glass of Gewurtztraminer wine which was recommended by Bruce. I highly recommend the deviled eggs and Korean Shrimp. The eggs were some of the most divine deviled eggs Ive ever eaten. For dinner my husband had the Smothered Pork Chop and a Filet Mignon for myself. Everything was well prepared and delicious. You must give this place a try!!

From the moment I called just an hour before to reserve a table for the patio to the time I left, I received nothing but amazing hospitality and service. Alas, my plus one had to cancel minutes before arrival so unfortunately my casual dining experience for two was a solo brunch endeavor but the host and my waiter Zach took amazing care of me. The grilled chicken Caesar salad and sweet potato fries were delicious and don't get me started on my grapefruit mimosa. Chef's kiss. Thank you J Wilson's for chauffeuring me on my food and beverage journey. Cheers!

We came here for a birthday lunch with my in-laws. The restaurant itself is upscale-casual, and family-friendly. They offer brunch on the weekends. I opted for the waffle, which was topped with whipped cream, blueberries, and honey. It was pretty tasty. My father-in-law ordered the ultimate biscuits and gravy, my mother-in-law ordered the everything sandwich, and my husband ordered the BELT sandwich. We also shared the beignets. Everyone was happy with their meal. I wish they offered turkey sausage or bacon as a side option, as well as iced coffee. Overall, it was a good brunch, and I would like to come back to try dinner sometime.

Their pork chop was MUCH more rare than the medium rare shown in the depiction.
    Carol C.

Do not eat the pork chop!!! It was served completely raw. My daughter didn't notice until she had eaten quite a bit of it. When questioned they said it was fine because they used to use meat thermometers, and because their meat is special and it could be undercooked because of how it's harvested. This made no sense. So they only took half off of the meal, but gave one free dessert. I'm not sure, but I would think that would be illegal to serve completely raw pork in a restaurant.

As a infrequent visitor to Lawrence I think it is safe to say that J Wilson's has been one of the top dining experiences for me as someone with celiac. My husband and I dined at the bar and the service was made better by the fact that the bartender was new and didn't have a lot of opinions on the dishes. It was nice to have someone honestly say that they just haven't tried enough things to recommend them. All of our food was fantastic. They were very sensitive to my gluten issues and provided GF deserts in the sampler, all of which hit the spot. My old fashioned was made expertly and they even exchanged my husbands wine for a different glass when he didn't care for the first one. Excited to dine here again when I return to Lawrence next time!

Quality food and warm environment. The deviled eggs are a must! Garden omelette had a great poblano cream sauce and the cocktails were great!

We stopped for a quick lunch while in Lawrence and everything was good. The service was good. It's a nice sit down restaurant and would be super cute for a date night.

It opens at 4 pm, but the restaurant's website still says 11 am. I do not understand why it has taken so long for the restaurant to update its website. There also have been changes to the menu. The new menu includes Branzino (European Sea Bass). It is an interesting choice, but arrives frozen. I prefer the salmon, which arrives fresh. I similarly would prefer trout to the Branzino, since trout would be available fresh in Lawrence. They have a choice of a few different nonalcoholic beers. I appreciate that. The nonalcoholic beer market has grown dramatically, even in Germany. I find it to be puzzling that some restaurants in Lawrence still don't have any.

Very bland no flavor with some sort of red sauce came out with it on the plate which tasted like A-1 sauce and ketchup mixed toy. Horrible flavor. I even asked out waiter if I could go back and cook my own steak. Then they tried to fix it with bringing me out another Ribeye and not the same Cowboy Cut . Grilled it also . Dining at this new restaurant feels like dining at a Michelin one-star restaurant in France without the cost of airfare or hotel. It is certainly the best in Lawrence, and a major step up from the rest. This is not surprising when you find out about the training of the chefs. For example, the Sous Chef Finnegan Huerter was trained at one of the greatest chef schools in the world, the famous Cordon Bleu in Paris. We got the lemonade, San Pellegrino (big bottle), Mache Salad (large enough to split between the two of us), Salmon, Celeriac Dauphinoise, Opera Cake, and the French Press Coffee Service shared between the two of us. Many of the preparations at this wonderful French restaurant are not available at any other restaurants in Lawrence and change frequently. The prices are very reasonable. The restaurant is open only on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays starting at 5 pm. When arriving, you will not be able to find the restaurant unless you know in advance where it is. The small ornate sign at the entrance is not visible from the street. There is a large parking lot at the entrance, which is very convenient unless there is a handicapped person in your party. The main entrance requires climbing a flight of stairs. If that is a problem for you, there is a handicapped parking space behind the restaurant, with two other ways to enter. One includes a small flight of stairs and the other consists of a ramp with no stairs providing wheelchair access. But this is the puzzle. While the stairs at the front entrance are well lit, the rear entrance has no lights at all. I do not understand a handicapped entrance in the dark with no lights at all. Evidently in good weather, there is outdoor dining in back with lights, but in the winter, there is no outdoor dining and no lights at all at the rear, where the handicapped access is locate. Best to avoid the rear entrance, unless you absolutely need it for a wheelchair. I anticipate that this relatively new restaurant plans to fix the lighting problem on its wheelchair access ramp. In fact I doubt whether the current lack of lighting on that ramp is ADA compliant.

It's a lovely restaurant. It seems a bit out of the way with mostly corporate buildings around. The restaurant has a nice modern aesthetic. I like the purple hyacinths hanging from the ceiling in one area. It was very steady for an off time in the afternoon. First, our server Olivia was amazing! Very attentive and we were extra needy this day so I really appreciate her patience. We even dropped food on the floor. Oops! She was so nice about it and cleaned it up immediately. We had customizations and extra requests. No problem for her! She went above and beyond. I hope she sees this because she was such a joy! The food was also very good. We started with the biscuits and one peach compote and one blueberry. Both were yummy. They were traditional drop biscuits and I love a good biscuit! We also had an order of fried green tomatoes on goat cheese grits. You get 4 very large slices. I could only eat one. The grits were yummy but there were not enough of them in relation to the friend green tomatoes. They were also encased by a sauce. I'm guessing a remoulade. I don't really care for remoulade sauce so I'd have removed it had I known it came with the dish. It really overpowered the goat cheese taste in the grits. The tomatoes were very al dente and I would have preferred them cooked a bit more. The dish was still good but my least favorite and I would normally love anything with those ingredients and fried green tomatoes are a favorite so the remoulade (or whatever it was) sauce was a real problem for me. I would definitely get them again without the sauce because they are great otherwise. But that sauce just overpowers every other flavor! I got the chicken tender dinner and others in my party got the bone in fried chicken. Everyone liked their chicken. The tenders were a big size. 4 of them but I hit 2 meals out of them. Everyone liked the Parmesan rosemary potatoes. I really liked the bacon green beans. The only side we weren't impressed with was the Mac and cheese unfortunately. The cheese was not good. We got coffees and a chai. All of them were very good. A bit pricey for the amount you get though. Even with the smaller complaints, I'd still give th a 5 because of the outstanding service and the dishes were overall very good and large portions. We will definitely return and I hope to try out a breakfast item next visit!

The restaurant itself is beautiful inside -- a cozy mix of rustic and modern that creates a really inviting atmosphere. Service started a little slow, though our waitress became more attentive once she came by. We mentioned it was our first visit, so I was a bit surprised there wasn't much guidance on the menu or any recommendations. At one point I asked about the two kinds of fries (I love fries!), and the explanation was simply that they were "fancy fries," without much detail on flavors or differences. We started with drinks and the Brussels sprouts appetizer. The sprouts were actually very good, with a nice balance in the sauce, and both the wine and sangria were refreshing. Unfortunately, dinner is where things went downhill. Our meals -- a steak and a gluten-free chicken sandwich -- took about 45 minutes to arrive, which felt long for relatively simple dishes. I had asked about the gluten-free bun since they can sometimes be dry, but didn't receive much insight beyond "it's gluten free," and sadly it was indeed very dry. The chicken itself lacked flavor, though the goat cheese cilantro sauce helped make it somewhat enjoyable. The fries looked homemade and delicious but arrived cold. The steak was cooked as requested, but it didn't have much flavor beyond the mushrooms on top. The broccoli side was tasty, and the potatoes were good, though it on a bed of Some kind of cheese sauce that wasn't quite to our liking.
