I was so excited to try out a new brunch spot! The newly remodeled restaurant is GORGEOUS! I absolutely love the decor, and small touches that make the space feel upscale & still warm/inviting. They have $2.50 mimosas with an array of juice choices, all day on Saturday! Also $3 bloodys too! Great deal & delish : ) After being awed by the interior design, very personable & attentive server (shoutout to Jacob!), & delicious cocktail, I was ready to experiment with the new menu. Unfortunately, this is where my visit started to underwhelm me. First, I ordered the beignets to share. They were verry dense & doughy, the complete opposite of what a beignet represents. For my entreé I ordered the steak & eggs. My steak was cooked unevenly, I ordered it medium. It was tender though, so that helped make up. But, as a party of 6..there wasnt anyone at my table that was raving about their meal. We all agreed the portion size was too small, especially for the price. And, although we finished our food..nothing was over the top. We all felt like we could have made our meals at home. My husband and I went to J.Wilson's on Friday night at 6pm. We made reservations through Yelp so we walked right in and were brought to a table. The ambiance in the restaurant is great for date night. I had the drink special of the day which was Mad Scientist (sage and champagne) and my husband had a Chardonnay - both delicious. We had the hummus platter to start, which was our favorite of the night. They give you plenty of crackers and vegetables to dip. For main course I had the salmon on special, and my husband had the jalapeño burger. It was nice to see on the menu and from our server that they provide local ingredients and the salmon I had was from Alaska, never frozen. Highly recommend! read more

I have to thank my mother-in-law for recommending this fancy farm-to-table restaurant to my husband and I. The first time we ate there, everything tasted fresh and delicious (I love their steak tips salad while my husband enjoyed their burger). The serving sizes were just right, the wine selection all delicious, and even dessert was just the right amount of sweet. Finally, we had an easy time arranging with Natasha and Lisa from the team so that they were our only choice for our wedding dinner. Just be sure to inform your photographer to bring their lights if you have an event here, though I learned after the fact that you can actually request for lights to be brightened. read more

Let me start off with the Drinks are great and beautiful !!! Charcuterie board was below average. We sat close to the bar, it was an odd time of the day so the restaurant was empty. So very disappointed. My husband made reservations 2weeks in advance for Valentine's Day. When we arrived we were seated at a high top in the bar. We voiced our displeasure when we were seated and the hostess said this is reserved seating tonight. This is not what we were expecting. My feet do not reach the foot rest on a bar top chair and I would have been uncomfortable sitting there for what we thought would be a very nice dinner. We didn't know it was the manager that came to our table to light a candle or we would have asked to be moved. We discussed whether we wanted to spend 200 plus for a meal seated at a high top and decided to leave. My husband asked for the manager and discovered it was the same person who was at our table when we were discussing whether to leave or stay. She didn't say a word to us or ask if we wanted to move to the dining room. J Wilson's has been one of favorite places for many years but we will not be returning due to the poor customer service we received. All we received was a sorry from the hostess as we were leaving. Again, the manager standing right by the hostess and didn't say a word. We left with as much grace as we possible and felt very disappointed at the lack of concern shown by the manager and staff. read more

One of my favorite places to go for breakfast. The ricotta pancakes are really good and they have great sausage. Try the lamb sausage! Their Moroccan eggs are wonderful and offer a nice change from run of the mill breakfast options. The take out menu is to die for. Every time we try it, it gets better. Today we enjoyed the salmon filet, the quinoa salad was fresh and very tasty. All of the portions are not only tasty but are generous. We had the chicken fried chicken and it tasted like we were eating on the farm at grandmother's table. Yum The catfish and shrimp in the creole sauce made you think you had been transported to New Orleans. We had the filet burger with fries. I can't express how good it tasted. Steak was good. Potatoes were cold and the carrots weren't fully cooked. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant. We arrived at 8 and the restaurant closed at 10. This is unacceptable. And we were really looking forward to the Gouda smashed potatoes. The drinks and service were good. We were offered other sides to go but as we were staying in a hotel this wasn't a possibility. Even if we were local why would we want sides to go? We were offered dessert which we accepted. Both were fine. The manager came to the table and gave us a gift card. We passed it on to someone local. We came here because it was rated one of the top restaurants in Kansas for steak by Best Things Kansas. We were not impressed. read more

I used to feel like this place was a cute little secret of mine. It's way on the west side so people rarely make it all the way here. But it's across the street from my apartment building. I would go here often and enjoy the great service, wonderful ambiance (dim lighting, well made and elegant furnishings, great for a fancy dinner, romantic night or first date) The food has been great every time I've gone. They've been willing to accommodate my every demand. I've even ordered something that is no longer on the menu and they always made it for me no problem! (I noticed it's back on the menu now. Am I powerful, did I do that?) I'm a vegetarian so I don't know first hand, but I've also heard their steak is some of the best in town. Now this place has gotten quite popular. It's always busy, but not too crowded or noisy. You can still have a nice dinner and conversation, (unlike many of the restaurants on Mass Street) I'm not going to complain because that means more revenue for them that they deserve it because they're awesome! As before mentioned, even if it's busy that doesn't interrupt the the ambience. No matter what the servers always pay good attention to every patron. Fine dining, but relaxed! I tried this place on a Friday for lunch. The lunch menu is fantastic! Fish, burgers, salads, steak, etc... the folks I was with got burgers and salads. I got a burger as well. It was delicious!!!!! Their special sauce is very good! The service is nice. Our server was very friendly and the manager dropped by just to check on us. Everyone is very warm and friendly and willing to answer any questions or help. The atmosphere is nice and cozy. Decorated with stone and wood inside and a very nice bar area that is visible when you walk on. This place will definitely not disappoint! I would recommend this place for lunch for sure! Hadn't tried this place before, but was looking for a little more upscale place for a birthday dinner, and they did not disappoint. Had mushroom/Chevrie appetizer, horseradish encrusted trout. Both absolutely on point. Delicious and perfectly cooked. Service was prompt and friendly. Husband had special,, surf n turf, and said it was perfect. Son selected strip steak, and said it was tender, flavorful and perfectly cooked. His friend had the chicken which was also wonderful. My first visit on a Sunday night was good. I'm reviewing my second visit, last night. Sunday at 5:30. They were busier than usual and there was a party of twelve in the private room. So I think that is why it was underwhelming. Our waitress was fast and got the details right. Extra sides, sauces, decaf coffee, etc. First time, I had the fish stew and loved it. It had a nice saffron flavor and a thin tomato broth. Meant to be eaten w a fork. This time it was ok, not great. It had very little liquid and very little flavor. The mussels in the stew were good. It wasn't bad, just not Our table had an order of fish and chips. The chips seemed to be heated not fresh. We complained and $4 was taken off the bill. The batter was so-so. These will not be ordered again. My hubby had the sirloin. It was good and perfectly done. Another person ordered the daily special with shrimp. Pasta w shrimp and a very light cream sauce. That was excellent. I'd get it next time but it was a special. Sunday evening happy hour offers $3 glasses of house wine and $2 off appetizers and small plates. Worth checking out. My brother and I had dinner there Sunday 4-25-----first time eating inside a restaurant since the pandemic started. What a great meal we each had! I had the Salmon special, which was superb. Both dinners were excellent. Waiter Matthew (hope I'm remember that right) was awesome and made the experience of eating there even better. Chef Luke is doing a great job! no masks. Our family ate at J. Wilsons this week, and when the person who showed us to our table had no mask, I asked for our server to please wear a mask. A woman then took our order wearing a mask, but a man who stopped by our table later to ask how our food was, was not wearing a mask. When we left, the woman at the front desk who checks in guests did not have a mask on. In addition, a family member told us that the prior week, that family's J.Wilson server did not wear a mask. Since masks are now mandated for age 2 to 11, and since the delta variant is spreading, it makes me very nervous that food servers and J.Wilsons' staff are not consistently wearing a mask. I wonder if they are making a political statement, but I don't want my health compromised, soI won't be eating there again until all staff wear masks around customers. read more

J Wilson's has been a godsend for us during Covid. They nailed curbside pickup right out of the gate, and they were smart enough to offer family style meals with all the sides early on as well. We've been ordering from them regularly for 7 months and have never been disappointed. The food is delicious and always hot, they are right on time with your order, the servers both on the phone and who bring to your car are so nice, patient and helpful. Several years ago, we were having drinks at a table in the bar when the restaurant was called Mariscos. Nancy, the owner, wandered over to us and asked if I was enjoying my martini. I wasn't, and she asked if she could try to make it. She said she'd make it until I liked it, which was Score One for her and her restaurant. Since then, Nancy has walked up to us at J. Wilson's many times to say hello and see how we are doing. We feel like family there and love being 'regulars.' They are always introducing new items into their menu to keep things fresh and interesting. Definitely try the Mushrooms & Goat Cheese appetizer. The seafood is definitely a hidden gem here. Bruce, the sommelier, is amazing. Desserts are on point. They are pretty good with gluten free, but don't have a dedicated fryer. I say go here - you will not be disappointed. read more

The food has consistently been delicious, but the service is consistently lacking. I've been for breakfast, brunch and dinner. The service is always extremely slow which is frustrating when your hungry. I complained once after a terrible service experience at dinner; the restaurant manager did correct this issue. This restaurant keeps getting better and better! I've been here 4-5 times since they underwent rebranding to become J. Wilson (formerly Marisco's), and the meals/plating/dish composition continue to improve. It's nice to having something of this caliber outside of Mass Ave. The elegance and modernity of the decor rival higher end restaurants in Kansas City. My colleague and I went in to enjoy dinner. We began with a couple of drinks (they have a solid selection of wines, beer, and cocktails) and went right to entrees. We both had the 8 oz. (larger portion) salmon, which was cooked to absolute perfection. Seriously, I have high standards for salmon (my husband cooks a mean filet!), and this was easily one of the best filets I have ever had. Each bite melted in my mouth. I would have taken a picture, but I ate it too quickly! The tarragon beurre blanc sauce complemented the fish nicely. It had a bright flavor with just the right amount of acidity. The sides were brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and red quinoa. These could have used a bit more seasoning, but were cooked well. Service was great - the staff were helpful, courteous, and responsive. The restaurant was a bit quiet, but it is winter break so Lawrence itself is a bit quiet. I'll definitely continue to dine here, as I look forward to seeing their menu continue to evolve! read more

This restaurant is gorgeous inside and made dining a special event! We introduced our parents to one another when dating here 14 years ago (it was Mariscos). Today we came back for dinner to celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary! The owner visits each table, which was welcoming. All items are marked for gluten, which was helpful. The sweet pea guac as a starter was fresh. I had the flank steak with chimichurri butter. It had a nice sear and the sauce was great. The Gouda potatoes were wonderful. The dessert special was a poached pear in red wine- so light & full of flavor. Our dessert was complimentary for our anniversary which was nice. The biggest surprise was the kids menu that had 5 items (starter, salad or side, entree, drink & dessert for $10! The quinoa salmon salad absolutely rocked my world. Its sweet beets combined with the bed of vegetables topped off with the beautifully prepared salmon truly changed my worldview. Its presentation is something one could expect to see on the other side of a glass wall at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of art; its taste is worth breaking that glass wall for. Truly a stunning dish.
