Arguably the finest liquor store in the region. That includes you, Kansas City. My interest is in quality wines, but they have a massive beer selection and the widest selection of spirits in the city. Where can you get a selection this wide and have not one, but several staff members truly experts in their trade? Not people that simply like to drink wine, but those with the knowledge and training to describe to customers with discerning tastes what they're buying? There are people simply employed in liquor stores as retail staff with little or no expertise, and there are industry professionals attending training and tasting/educational events all over the U.S. bringing their knowledge back to the community. Yet there is none of the intimidation factor that some feel when they go into a wine store with a selection of this size. I feel that in some venues in Kansas City even though it's not deserved. Attitude towards customers--it matters. The Saturday 2:00 wine tastings run by "wine geek" Mike are a destination. Worth driving over from Topeka or KC in my mind. Down to earth, sensible, friendly, and possessing an uncanny ability to remember every customer's name, it's impossible to not like the man. He really, really knows his vino. The tastings are a lot of fun and its become a mini Saturday afternoon get together with fellow wine lovers You aren't served enough to get much of a buzz, and that's not the idea. Each week there's a new theme so you're never experiencing the same thing twice. I've found several new favorites by attending these. They've set up a beautiful bar in the center of the store (see my photos). Want to see a happy group of customers? Come here on a Saturday. A nice chance to visit with fellow wine lovers and share recommendations. There's a discount on the wines being tasted. Don't recall the exact amount but believe it's either 10 or 15%. Service: first rate. Businesses reflect the personality of their owner and the staff here clearly enjoys their job. Since changing owners several years ago the store's quality and service has visibly improved. Stock: high volume store. Most product has a short shelf life. I'm OK with wine sitting for five years in my basement stored properly. I'm not happy with the wine sitting in a store for five years. OK, in truth, wine never lasts five years in my basement. That's someone else's gig. Want to find me every Saturday at 2:00? Unless I'm out of town, I'll be here looking for something special to go with whatever we're cooking at home. Do I like this place? Damn right I do.

This is a fantastic liquor store. The selection and the prices are both excellent, and the customer service is off the charts.

No, it's not the biggest store in the city, but to my mind it has become the best. Why? Three important ways: 1) Best service, never fail. Walk in the store and they ask if they can help, but they stay out of your way if you tell them you don't. Try getting help in some of the other stores? Difficult, typically. 2) Superb selection. Everything I'm looking for and more is here, and the people working here are pros. I asked today about the 200 yr. anniversary Guinness, guy doesn't blink and said they had a run on it but expect to be replenished in tomorrow's shipment. Not an unusual response, particularly the workers in the back who really seem to have it under control. 3) Consistency, see #1 and #2. I get this every time I arrive. No shortages, no folks standing around with hands in their pockets, no bored "when is my shift ending" looks on faces, etc. I can even recycle my wine corks here. I like that. And yet I can still come in and get surprised at what I can find, and that really makes me happy. The convenient parking is also a real plus, and with the laws recently changed the store has gotten larger (no need to separate out things like glassware into another internal "store" etc. Just keeps getting better so happy to revisit this review.

On The Rocks is a nice, large, easy-in-easy-out kind of place with really good selections. I went in hoping picking out a nice variety for a nearby event, and it was easy to find everything; good local brews, chilled wines tiered off by price, and a cart to haul it all around in. Service was pretty good as well as I needed a bag of ice and the nearby cashier overheard me and brought it over for me as I checked out. Between this and Cork & Barrel, the LFK liquor store scene is in good hands.

I stated in an earlier review I wouldn't buy wine here because of concerns about the storage, age and condition. No more. I liked what I saw, and found the exact bottle I had left at home by mistake while on the way to a social distancing picnic with friends. I probably won't come here often because I have other options where I live, but the days when I'd pass this store up for reasons of quality appear to have vanished, and for that I'm very happy for them.

I made several contacts with the owner about this, but nothing was done and the remaining case was still on the shelf. After I spoke to her again, she gave me a bottle and asked me to see if it was bad too. I thought, "Why don't you try it?" That one was bad too so I took it back to her. A couple of weeks went by and the same bottles remained on the shelf and there was no offer to compensate me. I was in there today, and she said they had opened another bottle and it was fine. In other words screw you. I pity the poor sucker who buys it. Unfortunately, the owner doesn't understand that a person who has lived in this community for 45 years talks to a lot of people!

But if I lived on this side of town I'd be a regular. Don't get some of the low ratings, but that's not my problem. What I really like which I've observed here before, is although they're not the largest in town, the selection is top tier, and shows that the people running it know their business. Not just a beer stop for the college crowd. If you're hunting down a first-rate single malt from Islay or need a small batch bourbon out of Kentucky, they have it. And the wines, the same. I was in particular on the hunt for a Barossa Valley aussie wine and found several to my liking. That and "Butter," one of the few Chardonnays I regularly bring home. Service was professional and someone came around to assist but didn't hover in place like a freaking drone. Thank you. New twist in checking out: they bar code scan your purchases through plexiglass. Cool! Works for me. And everyone is adequately observing best safety practices. No mask deniers need enter, thank you. I can get used to people with brains. Not sure when I return, but I left with everyone I was looking for, saw far more than I'd ever need, and everything else here--pricing included--is what it should be. Well done, Mass Beverage.
