I've been coming to this restaurant ever since I discovered it about 8 years ago when I was looking for a place to dine as a kid. Now coming back as an adult I was greeted and told about the specials and bar service. The light streaming in through the dining room windows was lovely and the shades that came down to block the sun were lovely and set the mood. We ordered the Trout wirh fingerling potatoes and broccoli. We also ordered the BBQ pulled pork. Both were fantastic and well seasoned. The modelo I ordered was lovely and not to mention our server was very accommodating and kind. The prices were fair and for desert we got Key Lime Pie which was delicious and didn't taste like fake food coloring. I'll be coming back here very soon. read more

I visited this place a few times when I was in LA for breakfast. This is a happening spot for breakfast. We did go before 9 on a Monday, and there was almost no one there when we started, but the place was fairly packed when we were done. I tried the Pacific Sunrise omelette one day, and the French Mexican on a different day. The common element to both was Boursin cheese, which is a favorite of mine. You could taste the cheese in Pacific Sunrise more! The handmade chorizo in French Mexican was really good. Everything was flavorful. I like how you can get a salad as a side with breakfast (or hash browns or up-charged fruit if you prefer). Also, do not miss the English muffins for an extra $2! They really are exceptional. This place is a bit pricey, around $70 for breakfast for two. It does seem like a good place to have breakfast with a friend, the booths are roomy, and you can't always overhear people's conversations! Service is good. read more

First time here and we had such a great experience! Perris, our waiter, was amazing--his service and attention to detail were truly top tier. The food did not disappoint either. We started with the maple brussel sprouts, which were packed with flavor. The black pepper wings (the reason we came) were absolutely delicious and lived up to the hype. We also tried the salmon toast--light but still very flavorful. For our entrée, we had the steak frites and it was a 10/10. Went to J. Nichols Kitchen for a birthday celebration meal and as always the food was very good. We had one server at first and then switched to another and both did fine. Overall service was smooth. Most of the time when I come here I get the Holiday Turkey. I probably order that about 98 percent of the time. On this visit I seriously considered the grilled Idaho rainbow trout, but I ended up going with the steak frites, and it was a good choice. My nephew got the creamy chipotle rigatoni. My wife had a salad. I had the arugula avocado salad, which was fresh and flavorful. Since it was a birthday celebration, we finished with dessert. We had the brownie sundae and the key lime pie. Both were very good and a strong way to end the meal. Natalie was our server and she was really nice and attentive. Food is always fresh, consistent, and enjoyable here. J. Dropped in on J Nichols for breakfast after a Yelp search for an open Breakfast spot. J Nichols made the cut for it was right in the area I could afford to stop in, grab a quick bite, then go. To my surprise I arrived close to an hour of the breakfast menu being finished for the day. Literally had another taste for Pancakes and Coffee. No sweat. My host (Ian) was supper cool and professional and helped me to a table where he handed me off to another host who helped me navigate the menu to reach a meal that could substitute missing breakfast. So I chose the Kung Pow Chicken and a Mocha Latte (glad I was still able to grab a cup). The place is far more spruced and elegant than I anticipated. Walked in with a T-Shirt and sweats which made me feel out of uniform so to speak. Once again. My hosts saved the day assuring me all was well and to come in, have a seat, relax, and enjoy their dinning experience of which I did thoroughly. The Mocha Latte hit my daily crave for coffee. The drip was finished for the day due to their breakfast hours. The Kung Pow Chicken arrived with a bed of white rice. Turned out to be tasty without the imbalance of the sweet to salty ratio being out of wack. Perfect balance with crunchy Cashews and snappy Bell Peppers and string beans. Lightly crisped succulent pieces of Chicken. Classy place. Next time I will be sure to meet the atmosphere as it is set. The afternoon evening menu included Happy Hour Wine and Beer on Tap. Arrived for happy hour and seated at a high top table. Perfect for our group of 3. J Nichols gives me an upscale modern diner vibe. Welcoming and cozy. We started with wine. I don't think they serve any other alcoholic beverages other than wine and beer. We ordered wings to share off the happy hour menu. So yummy. Should have ordered two. I ordered the hamburger, medium well. It was kind of dry. Definitely medium next time. For dessert I got the brownie sundae. So good. Loved that they were generous with the candied pecans. Been here a couple times and never had a bad experience. I usually get breakfast food and I'm never disappointed. I've had a couple of their omelets and also the eggs benedict and would honestly recommend getting breakfast items if you are going, just note you can only get eggs benedict on weekends. I say get breakfast because I did order a pasta once and while it was delicious I still think the breakfast food is the go to when coming here. The inside is a little small so when it's busy it can feel a little overwhelming. However, I wouldn't let that detract you, as the service is almost always great and the food is worth it. My Family and I went to meet my mother-in-law's relatives in Marina del Rey. They chose this restaurant and we didn't know anything about it. Everyone ordered BLT sandwiches or hamburgers. I chose the Kung Pao Chicken. I think this is probably one of the best Kung Pau Chicken I've ever had! When I told the waitress, she said, it was her favorite. I also got a lemonade. That was really yummy. With free refills. The waitress was truly kind, and she was very accommodating and helped all of the older people I was because they had a hard time hearing. Even though the restaurant was crowded there were many families, and everyone was happy. I'd recommend this place if you're ever in Marina Del Rey. Service was great and he was very attentive and ensured to let the kitchen know of my friend's allergies. My friend though was shocked that a side of bacon was $10. I do agree that a side of bacon (3) pieces is well overpriced. I believe they should add to their menu on how much a side of bacon is and possibly lower the cost because not many people are willing to or can afford $10 bacon. Stopped by for the first time and had a generally pleasant experience. We started with the black pepper wings, which were absolutely delicious--crispy with a perfect char that added great flavor. The service was attentive, and the vibe of the restaurant was relaxed and welcoming. For our mains, we tried the meatloaf and turkey plates. The meatloaf was tasty, and the accompanying gravy added just the right amount of flavor to bring the dish together, especially with the mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, the turkey plate fell short--the mashed potatoes and gravy were both bland and underwhelming. J Nichols is now my favorite upscale coffee shop in town. I refused to go there for some time because they were needlessly using their handicapped spots for outdoor seating and that is not okay. Now they have taken them down as they should have a long time ago. We are back and the food is better than ever. They used to be pretty pricey, but the area has caught up to them and now they are the same as most excellent coffee shops. I find the prices to now be fair. They have a great selection. We love their hand made burgers that are cooked just the way you want them. Their fries are the bomb. All of their sandwiches are good. My husband love their Ruben sandwiches and they make the meat there. All of their breakfast items are outstanding and they have great coffee. Even their ice tea is great. We love it all and will be back again and again. The service is just perfect. Our server was the best. Have a great time. read more

Well...I love this place, so there is that. I've thought of ordering this Turkey dish forever, so I finally did...and it was just ok. I've found that their mashed potatoes are a little bland, almost instant potato-ish, and definitely need salt. It comes with a piece of white bread sitting on top of the potatoes, with the little bit of stuffing on top of it, then the Turkey. I would suggest getting rid of the bread and add more stuffing. Or maybe soak the bread in gravy before laying it on top of the potatoes. It was just kind of odd to have the dry piece of bread there...does not need to be on this dish. And the Turkey...it was good, but sliced very thin and the portion they give you is a little on the small side. Just a couple more things to note...when trying to season the potatoes, the pepper grinder they provided was set to where the pepper came out like fine powder, so I'd adjust that a little, and our server and another employee who brought our check to the table, both looked at our finished plates, which had been pushed to the edge of the table and just ignored them...I had to call him back and ask if he could please remove them. Always busy, for a good reason, us four souls were ready for lunch. I had a terrific BLT CHOP salad with bacon I iceberg I tomato I avocado I egg I red onion I blue cheese I creamy vinaigrette. Another thing I appreciated, was easy parking. In a shopping plaza, hug parking lot with free parking. It's something that sticks out for me when going out in LA. Easy and or free parking. Walked in, greeted immediately. Efficient and friendly staff. Even as my friend and I just hung out after the meal, staff was attentive, offering refills and just checking on us. Food was simple and good. See pics. One dish, my salad - was missed but immediately fixed. The staff apologized which I appreciate though not really necessary as we're all human. Bringing that up as I've had encounters where staff accused me of not ordering something. I liked the vibe. Fantastic Brunch spot for the whole family! Their menu is extensive, satisfying whatever cravings you may have, including a breakfast menu that's served until 2pm every day! We made a reservation 15 minutes ahead via Yelp for 2 on a Sunday around 12:30pm and were seated immediately upon arrival. Our server got our drink orders in quickly and refilled our water through out without skipping a beat. The Mocha Iced Coffee was not overly sweet in a good way and gave the right amount of energy. Now the food... heavenly! The Pork and Pancakes were very heavy, but absolutely delicious. The perfect balance of sweet, savory, meaty and saucy. Honestly the pancakes alone are worth ordering. The California Omelet was tasty as well and the hash browns were crispy on the outside, yet fluffy on the inside. I went of dinner and seated myself at the bar. I love bar seating, especially for quicker service. As I looked over their menu, it looked very familiar. It reminded me of Houston's, Honor Bar, Hillstones' menu as well as the ambiance, so I asked my waiter. He mentioned J Nichols is an independent/family owned business. Since the items on the menu were also very similar to the above mentioned establishments I know the fried chicken is so I went with that. It's slightly different but nonetheless still really good. As a frequent customer of this J Nichols, I can confidently say that this is by far one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten at. The service is always quick. The staff is very friendly and pretty humorous as well. As well, The food could not be any better. I always have the same order: steak frites with peppercorn sauce and fries, and for dessert, a brownie sundaes. This restaurant never ceases to impress me. The ambience in here is very modern.
