Salt and Pepper Fish Filet with fried rice lunch special
Colin R.

I owe JL and updated review. It's been more than a decade ago and things have changed a lot including an updated menu and of course pricing. In spite of inflation, their prices are still very reasonable especially the lunch specials. Taste and quality have improved dramatically for a joint like this. Inside the dine in options are limited -- just a few small tables usually 1 or 2 people in a rush. Most of us take to go. Which is fine by me, cos it's good portions, the guy at the counter is super nice, and price and taste are good enough especially for lunch. Love it!

2024/01/26 Seafood Chow Fun
Dexter D.

I finished one project, had a half-hour to kill before my next project and I was hungry. I thought a quick fix at JL Kitchen would cure my hunger pangs. There was space in the parking lot. I was the only customer inside. When I stepped in, the gentleman asked if I was Anthony. I told him no, though now I wonder what Anthony had ordered (wink, wink!). I ordered Seafood Chow Fun to go, paid and was told that it would be a five-minute wait. I sat and worked on my phone until my order came out. I drove to a nearby park to eat. My bag contained my food, two napkins, a fork, soy sauce and some chili oil. I ate 1/2 the container and found two shrimp, two pieces of fish and three pieces of calamari. I'll finish the other half tomorrow. Overall, the food was hot and reasonably flavorful. I usually request a packet of hot mustard but forgot to do so. JL is decent for a quick meal from a local neighborhood Chinese restaurant. I would come back for another meal, but I would not bring my parents here for a more formal meal.

Shrimp fried rice w added chili oil

The chef that cooks the food has some fine wok cooking skills. I just wished they used fresher rice because the fried rice I ordered today had many chunks of old stale rice. I will give em another chance since the flavors were good.

Had a late lunch here. They made my food and was tasty. Parking would be tough during lunch. Only spaces I believe. Good food. Good prices.

The restaurant is really big and we sat at a table for 14 pretty comfortably. We were also here on a Saturday night and the restaurant was full. The service is your typical Chinese restaurant vibe where you leave a little bit emotionally abused after paying for overly priced menu items. We did the à la cart and easily spent up to $1500. Better off with the family plan meal but nothing was of interest to us except one or two dishes. It took forever to come out and I mean FOREVER to a point where we almost cancelled a few dishes and called it a night, but they kept saying it's being made. With as many people and as massive as the restaurant was, and the price tags, I was expecting a more efficient service. A couple of times we saw our dish being brought to the wrong table and the people going "oh we didn't order this." With all of that out of the way, I am giving them an average score of 3 starts because the food did bring them back up. It was actually really good. My favorite of all things we ordered was their sea bass with string beans. The sea bass was fried crispy, garnished salty and still soft inside. It paired really well with the string beans. We ordered a bunch of other things that I couldn't tell you what the name was in English and they were above average taste wise. Their complimentary dessert however, was mass produced and tasted like they added too much water to it. This was the only one I was disappointed in. I still say this place is extremely overpriced but for a family meal experience and if you ever want to impress a date, why not.

Hot tea brought to the table soon afterwards with menus. Hong Kong style cafe. Pictures of each item which caused me to ask myself what I wanted to eat. They have a good variety of dishes, from classic baked Hong Kong cafe dishes to dishes that are closer to what you'd see at a Chinese restaurant. We've been many times since they've opened so have had lots of their dishes and haven't encountered one we don't like yet. I like their Baby Milk Tea, which uses frozen tea shaped as a baby as a giant ice cube, so the tea doesn't get diluted by melted ice. They're popular so they get very busy during peak times and the wait list can get long. Service is fast and consistent. As far as ambiance is concerned, I love their outdoor-indoor feel (they have artificial trees indoors but in a classy way).

Staffing on the Yao Yao was only 1 waitress & a waiter bot. Orders: Sour Shredded Potato $16.95- crunchy potato sticks w/oil, chili peppers & seasoning. A different menu than other places & it was good, just a little oily. Garlic Pea Sprout $19.95-tender pea sprouts w/garlic bulbs cooked together makes this my favorite vegetable dish. Combo BBQ platter $29-BBQ pork, chicken & soy sauce chicken gives you a variety but my favorite was the pork. I am not used to the bony chicken pieces & having to de-bone them myself so I wouldn't order this again. Shrimp & BBQ pork Fried Rice $17-nice wok heat w/fresh pierces of shrimp made this a satisfying dish. It was a little bland but ok. Golden Soup Pickled Fish (S)$22.95-for the price this was the best bargain. The fish fillets are tender & the perfect size. The broth was a bit oily but still excellent & the star of the show. The slight tangy broth bc of the pickled vegetables gives this dish its unique flavor profile & my favorite. In addition to this, I was surprised w/a few pieces of potato noodle hidden inside this gem that gave it a chewy texture. Other than going on a hectic day, I'm sure service would be better on a weekday.

I had an absolutely unacceptable and deeply disturbing experience at Jin Gege in San Leandro…read more My family and I visited this restaurant with my service dog. The manager demanded that I provide identification or certification for my service dog. I explained that under the Americans with Disabilities Act, businesses are not legally permitted to require service dog documentation as a condition of entry. Despite this explanation, the waiter repeatedly refused to serve us. When I talked to the manager to discuss the situation, she showed no willingness to address my concerns. Instead, she continued to deny any wrongdoing and repeatedly insisted that they would not serve us. What happened next was even more shocking. A restaurant employee repeatedly verbally confronted and threatened us. He even became increasingly aggressive and attempted to approach us in a physically threatening manner when we said we would report him and the restaurant to ADA and relative department. Two other individuals had to intervene repeatedly to stop him from coming toward us. I have never experienced such hostility and intimidation from restaurant staff simply for attempting to exercise my legal rights. I am extremely disappointed by the manager's handling of this situation and deeply concerned about the threatening behavior displayed by the employee. No customer should have to experience intimidation, threats, or potential discrimination simply for bringing a service dog into a restaurant. I am sharing this experience so that other customers, especially people with disabilities and service dog handlers, can make informed decisions about visiting this restaurant. This was not merely poor customer service. It was a deeply troubling experience involving potential disability discrimination and serious concerns about customer safety.

3.5 STARS My fambam…read moreof about 15 gathered to celebrate my mom's 87th birthday in a private room. Thankfully, my sister made a reservation since the restaurant was extremely busy around 1 pm. The private room was spacious, elegantly decorated, and even included a private restroom for our convenience. The food was undeniably delicious. Since my mom loves seafood, we ordered a massive crab or lobster (they showed it to us live before cooking--check my photos). The chefs prepared the legs as one dish and transformed the rest of the body into another, using some parts as impressive garnishes for the fried rice. The crab and bird's nest soup was unique and really tasty. We also enjoyed a variety of dim sum, including shiu mai, steamed pork buns, and buns filled with egg or taro. We also had Peking duck, but I was disappointed that the buns were very small, and most of the duck was gone by the time it arrived. For dessert, there were plenty of sweets like sesame balls and Portuguese tarts (not sure what they're called here), plus complimentary birthday buns at the end. Overall, the food was excellent. However, the service left much to be desired. I understood why my parents preferred a family-style restaurant for such a large group, but they brought the dishes out ONE AT A TIME, and the lazy Susan turned painfully slowly. With 15 people, the process became frustrating--by the time a dish reached me, it was nearly gone. It would be different if they served each person a plate with the dish at a time. But this was supposed to be family-style!!! While I realize some dishes, like the lobster or crab, take longer to prepare, serving one dish at a time made the whole experience feel disjointed. For big parties, they should really reconsider their serving style to make it smoother and more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, after today's experience, I will not be returning. The lack of professionalism and customer service is unacceptable. The employee with the bowl-cut hairstyle who was operating the register seriously needs additional training, because the way she handled a simple transaction was completely unnecessary. My partner and I ordered our food together, but the cashier failed to recognize that we were paying for our items separately. Instead of doing the logical thing and splitting the orders into two transactions, she mishandled the payment process. Mid-transaction, she removed my card and then proceeded to yell, "YOUR CARD NO WORK!" I calmly asked whether she had attempted to charge my card twice, because if so, my bank would likely decline the duplicate transaction. Rather than addressing my question professionally, she continued raising her voice. I finally asked, "Are you yelling at me?" to which she responded, "YES." Absolutely ridiculous. She eventually apologized, seemingly recognizing that her behavior was inappropriate. However, an apology does not erase the experience. What makes this even more disappointing is that this is not the first time I have witnessed disrespectful treatment at this establishment. On multiple occasions, I have personally observed Black customers being treated poorly, and today's interaction only reinforced my concerns about how this business treats its customers. The food is genuinely good. I won't deny that. It's one of the reasons I've continued supporting this restaurant for nearly two decades. But good food does not excuse poor customer service, disrespect, or behavior that makes customers feel unwelcome. I refuse to continue spending my hard-earned money at an establishment where I have repeatedly witnessed disrespect toward Black customers and experienced that same lack of respect myself. After nearly 20 years of being a loyal customer, I'm done. Asia Delight needs to seriously reevaluate its customer service practices, employee training, and the way it treats the community that has supported it for years.
