Went here Friday night at 11:20PM. Was told I could not eat in the restaurant because they close at midnight. Seemed unreasonable to not be able to eat my food from 11:30-12. I've been a regular customer here since you opened and have never been turned away at 11:30pm. I have eaten here scores of times. I was not near home and really had planned to eat at the restaurant. Definitely makes me reconsider this place as an option. Seemed like the people working just wanted everyone out. I did not recognize them. Perhaps some training in logic? I drove 40 minutes to go to this J. Gumbo's. My pregnancy cravings had me thinking about it, even though I hadn't had J. Gumbo's in about a decade (and never at this location.) The service was quick and friendly, and the food was just as good as I remembered. I got a bowl with half voodoo chicken and half white bean chili. The serving sizes are huge. When I was done eating, it didn't even look like I had made a dent in the bowl. I'm no expert in Cajun food, so I can't comment on the authenticity, but what I can say was that it was great. This a perfect late night eat location! The rice and beans will definitely sop up all that alcohol from late night partying! The food is so good too! Plus, they're one of the few places in the Clifton area with their very own parking lot! That's a +10 for me. I hate trying to parallel park. We got a big bowl of bumble bee stew for $6. It's served over rice like all the meals, unless you un-request it. It's pretty spicy and doesn't contain meat. I usually order a combination of two or three entrees in the same bowl to mix it up. I like a combination. Sometimes it takes away from the spiciness. They have plenty of seating and a unisex bathroom. They have late night specials here. They also have garlic bread and cornbread. In reality, my honey sriracha bowl tasted like a sugary ketchup glob over uncle ben's rice and boiled chicken. Something on par with a failed concoction I could have made at home using leftovers and condiments in the fridge... certainly not worth $8.29. The one upside: they clearly label their gluten free options. Overall, not sure I'd ever return. For the late night you can be rest assured the Skyline next door is your better bet. read more

I had a friend in town from Lafayette, IN where they had previously had a J. Gumbo's that had since closed down. He is an avid fan of this Cajun-Creole chain restaurant, so he all but insisted that we go here during his visit. We swung by after an afternoon of bar-hopping and definitely did not regret it. There is a backroom that is "intimate seating" where groups of friend can get together to watch a game and not bother any other customers or maybe a meeting. Not sure if you can, didn't ask. Anywho, there was a nice choice of items on the menu. Not too overwhelming. You could make the gumbo in/with rice or on bread (called Po'boy) . I have never been there and did not know what to get. The person at the front helped with my decision and a nice lady said that I must try the red chili Chicken. It had a red pepper symbol next to it and I absolutely love spicy food so I tried out that one. It was only 8 bucks and the serving size was huge!! Really could share with another person if you are looking at true serving sizes. When I got home to enjoy my glorious, delicious smelling meal, I was surprised. In FL, Po'boys has slaw and tomatoes on it but this one didn't. It was just Gumbo and French bread, almost reminded me of a bread bowl. BUT it really didn't need it!! It was so good and had a great tasty kick to it. It even got me sweating and it is pretty hard to do due to my high tolerance of spicy food. They are delicious! The gumbo combo I got were served with either white rice or brown rice (with your choice) and a piece of fresh bread. Yum! Very flavorful and fulfilling. The price is reasonable (relatively cheap compared to most of the restaurants on Ludlow.) But don't get me wrong, the food they serve do not look cheap and skimpy at all! Worst experience in the city:-( I came into town for a quick visit. We were speaking with the guy trying to figure out what would be a good food choice. He gave suggestions, but never offered any samples. I ordered the Jambalaya and Etouffee mixed bowl with brown rice. It came to me with white rice instead of the brown...but I ignored it hoping the food would be good and I really just didn't like it. I asked if I could exchange it for something else and was told "no" because they "offer samples." Keep in mind, not one sample was ever offered.
