Driving around the BCS area looking for a BBQ place that was open on a Sunday, we finally found what we were looking for in J Cody's. J Cody's is one of those Texas barbecue joints that you take for granted until you leave the state. The options for meats are vast and served with a smile, and the sides there are all homemade and delicious. It has a very comfortable feel to it, and I could spend hours looking at the old bonfire pictures they have hanging up among the various taxidermied critters. Next time I'm down watching the Ags in another offensive shootout, I'll make sure to stop by. read more

Good stuff, good lunch deals. I like to go here for a consistent taste of actual food cooked on real grills (fire.) Always fast, good tasting with a good assortment of 'buffet style' sides. The first time I came to J. Cody's, I thought I'd definitely found authentic pit BBQ. They have stacks of mesquite logs at the ordering area. Most places store their wood in outbuildings, but it does quickly convince diners what they use to cook with. (I doubt they pull logs from the display for their pit.) I picked up ribs & brisket to go for a quick lunch. The brisket was quite good, and smokier than some BBQ joints in town. I found myself making yummy sounds in front of my poor burger-eating compadres. Eating ribs in front of jealous friends is a bit trickier than the sliced brisket. The ribs although tasty, were a bit tougher than I like. I recently returned to J. Cody's in the late evening, and found the brisket lean, but a bit drier than I like. I could see a smoke ring, but it was around half as deep as that at nearby Martin's. And the outer layer of the brisket was just beginning to harden, telling me that this joint prepares its entire day's expected brisket all at once. I noticed a sign at the ordering counter, announcing a special per-pound price for yesterday's brisket. I later wondered whether yesterday's brisket would be any different than this brisket apparently made early in the morning. The ribs were a bit dry and definitely should have been dusted with more spice rub. They should also smoke their meat longer, if they want to compare favorably with Martin's. I also thought their side-orders hot bar needed to be more regularly tended to. The sausage slices in the beans were a strange dark shade of red, like a liver wound in a certain Bruce Willis flick. The beans, while a reasonable color, were a bit chalky. Their BBQ dipping sauce tasted like it was literally half ketchup, which is extremely irritating, since they don't smoke their meat as long as I'd like them to, you'd think that they'd supply a smokey sauce, right? I find it strange that BBQ should dry out during the course of an afternoon, when slow smoking, in addition to tenderizing tough & inferior meat cuts, has long been a traditional preservation method. Perhaps a number of local BBQ purveyors should both change their steam-table setup, and/or consider smoking more small batches of meat in their pit. read more

I had heard good things about J Cody's and none of them were true on my visit there. Everything I tried was disappointing. The cheeseburger was paper thin and too well done; burnt on one half. The brisket was dry and flavorless. Same for the pork loin. The beans were just ok, again they needed more seasoning. The only highlights were the cornbread and french fries. The service was good, the people were friendly, and the restaurant was clean. But as far as the food goes, J Cody's is NOT recommended. read more

J Cody's was recommended by many Aggie parents and when I came to town to move my son out of the dorms, I wanted to celebrate his first year and a 4.0 with a good steak. During the Convo18 protocols the staff was doing a amazing job they have had to revamp everything about the business to protect customers and staff and it was top notch!! We had a ribeye and the pieces and ends they were cooked to perfection my son had the cream corn which he said was the bomb I had fried okra. Their homemade bread was excellent. Had a not so great feeling choosing this place upon reading other reviews before we went there, but decided to try it anyway. Went in during the afternoon, and the place was practically empty. Husband and I ordered a one-meat plate each, mine brisket, his pork ribs. Upon completing our order, we were informed they did NOT have the pork ribs (how can a BBQ joint NOT have ribs??...), so he ordered the turkey. BOTH meats we selected were dry as a board. I went to J Cody's many months ago and was not impressed but wasn't horrible so I gave them another shot. Big mistake! Had the Chicken Fried Steak. Asked them to cook the fried okra just short of burnt. When my food came out okra was slightly tan. Not really cooked enough! And it was so salty I couldn't even eat it. Chicken Fried Steak was over cooked dry and hard as boot leather. Masked potato's had good flavor but was ice cold from the minute they set it down. Had them put gravy on the side. It was warm and good. Cornbread was dry but warm enough to PU butter on it. I was ok. I've never been to a resturant before that everything on the plate had a problem. Until now! I tipped the waitress 30% and nicely explained to her my problems. I told her I did not even want to speak to a manager but thought she should know because most will not tip her for such horrible food. Their food is exceptionally good. Their process for handling take-out orders needs an overhaul though. I'm not talking about them not having a drive-thru window anymore. That's fine. I'm talking about the process for picking up an order inside the restaurant. A separate location for picking up and paying for the orders would be good. The turkey I had was delicious, as was the BBQ sauce, but there was one employee who was extremely rude. I asked to exchange my order because of a food intolerance that I didn't know was in the sausage until after I received the order. I ate one small bite and then returned the entire plate of food. He gave me a hard time about it, and I had to tell him my private health issues before he would change out the sausage for turkey. I even offered to accept less turkey since I took one bite of the sausage. This guy was rude and would not have exchanged the food if I had not insisted, and explained that it would send me to the Emergency Room and possibly cause a hospital stay and surgery. I won't be back even though I am a local to the area and I love BBQ. Poor, poor customer service. read more

We finally tried J Cody's today and were surprisingly satisfied. I am a native Austinite so I'm used to BBQ the likes of Lockhart and Elgin- the REAL DEAL. Needless to say I have not found anything impressive in the BCS area, but today's visit gave me hope. For a $20 bill we had pork ribs and the accompanying buffet, the ribs were decent, the sauce almost perfect, but the sides were really really great. The corn, green beans, potato salad- really flavorful for such run-of-the-mill buffet items, they all had some sort of flavor twist. The lady who took our order was really nice, I am kicking myself for not getting her name! We went around 2pm, a slow time, but it was good because we could hang out and mosey around to look at all the interesting pictures throughout the place. Most were A&M related with historical significance, like a picture of Teddy Roosevelt visiting the campus, and pictures of the campus and bonfires throughout the decades. It was a neat place, we are only sorry we didn't visit sooner! We love a place with atmosphere XD read more

J Cody's evokes enough nostalgia in me that I feel some shame for giving it two stars. The burger (with extra mayo) is the closest you can get to my grandmother's without setting foot in her house. When I first moved to College Station a few years ago it was with bright and eager eyes that I first entered J Cody's and felt instantly at home. Friendly, flavorful, and filling were the three laws of the house and why would anyone leave except for that excessive fullness that demands one's belt be loosened a notch or two? Over the past few years my viewpoint has changed as I've grown more experienced and perhaps more jaded. I've also suffered a few meals that have left me somewhat disappointed and even one or two that made me downright sad. The waitstaff continues to shine, omnipresent and omni-pleasant at every one of my visits. The other patrons are friendly and the environment is relaxing (assuming you don't mind being stared at by dead animals' heads hanging on the walls). The BBQ is fine, but lackluster when compared with other offerings in town. I would put the BBQ around the level of C&J's or Martin's, and well below the level of Fargo's. The burger is ok but too thin & salty...I'd categorize it as third tier, below what you get at Grub, Mickey's Sliders, Veritas/Chef Tai's, or Flip&Peel (...sorry Grandma). To add insult to injury, the fries are a soft flavorless mess. The sides are generally slightly above average for BBQ joints in the area, which is a plus but not enough of one. For another benefit, they handle sizeable (~8 person) groups pretty well. If I was going here, I'd probably get a steak or a fish dish. In fact, if I want a steak for lunch, this might be the first place I think of. All in all, I've experienced better, and when I go out I expect better. read more

This is not a bad BBQ place. It's not comparable to Salt Lick, but it's comparable to Rudy's. One thing has stuck out in my memory for years now about it though, and that's the creamed corn. I've moved away and think about this years later. I didn't even know I liked creamed corn that much before having it here, but now I've looked for some like it other places and still haven't found it. Apparently it's the owner's grandmother's recipe. When I return to CS again, I will definitely 'cross getting some creamed corn at J Cody's' off my list of things to do. read more

I've just used Cody's barbecue to cater a luncheon for 175. They did a phenomenal job. The barbecue chicken and sausage was so delicious, the mashed potatoes were divine and the green beans were unbelievable! Cody is such a really nice guy and made this event happened so quickly ! In my opinion this is the best BBQ in the Bryan/College Station area. I was there last week , returning my son to Texas A&M - since his truck had been stolen over the Christmas holidays while at home in Dallas ! I ordered the two meat dinner that comes with a trip to the AYCE "side order" buffet, that was amply stocked with a nice variety to select from. I had the brisket & ribs, and was very pleased ! The brisket was tender and still retained enough moisture to be almost "juicy". It had an understated pepper/spice rub that was notable without being overwhelming. The smoke taste/ ring we look for was there, but another hour or so in the smoker in low heat might have made the difference between good & great. The four pork ribs were very impressive looking, thick and meaty ! The rib meat was fairly tender, and although it looked like it had been smoked a good while - it also could (in my opinion) have used more cooking time because it was reluctant to leave the bone. I have become spoiled to eating "fall off the bone tender" ribs, and these needed a little "tugging & chewing", lol. That said, the taste was overall very good. The all you can eat (AYCE) side order buffet features I sampled were some very tasty green beans & potatos and potato salad, and some "o.k." pinto beans. My favorite thing from this area was the "southern-styled" cornbread ! It had a slight honey sweetness to it that made me go back for a second piece ! The sweet tea was sweet enough not to need addittional sweet & low, and was fresh brewed tasting. One side order item I did not care for was the corn because of whatever spicy thing was mixed in with it ! lol. Without debating the relevance or controversy of the BBQ sauce "issue" so many like to argue about: The one thing I really disliked about this place was the thick, hot, ketchupy tasting bbq sauce ! It was awful. I personally LIKE bbq sauce with my bbq, even most commercial brands. I am very tolerant of this variable and usually enjoy when places make their own sauce. The facility (building ) was spacious with seating for many, clean, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The prices seemed reasonable for the generous portion sizes, and I plan to return on my next trip to this college town ! read more

My only experiences with J Cody's has been catered events. I realize no one expects too much from food carted over from the restaurant in mass quantities, however, the experience my husband and I had with them at the Texas Reds festival a couple weekends ago was absolutely appalling. First of all, it was the weekend after our first anniversary, so thought it would be fun to splurge a little. We payed $34 for one "steak dinner" package (we planned to share on the advice of some other folks we'd spoken with) - included a steak dinner (obviously), and a few tickets for some small wine samples. The steak is cooked on-location on open-flame grills. We went through the buffet line (ick), and picked a steak out of the "rare" tray, figuring it'd been sitting for a few minutes and hoping it wouldn't be more done than "medium". When we cut into it, it was literally WHITE in the middle it was so well done. Definitely not what we were expecting, especially since we paid for it. When he took the steak back up to ask the guy who seemed to be in charge of working the grills if we could trade it for a "rare" steak, the man was very rude to him and told him he couldn't guarantee the doneness of the steak and he'd just have to deal with it. Personally, if he'd said that to me I would have dumped it on the ground and walked off, because it definitely wasn't good enough to choke down. I took the steak back up and began by speaking with the same man my husband had spoken with - I could tell he was flustered that so many steaks were coming back, and was a bit huffy with me. Another man walked by and the first man yelled at the second man to "take care of this!" The second man was very nice, and promptly found me a rare steak straight from the grill. It wasn't bad - wouldn't pay for it in a restaurant, but definitely way better than our first dog-food quality steak. Other than that, the green bean casserole was good, and nothing else was tasty enough to take up precious wine space in my belly. The brownies they had out for dessert were disgusting. After that experience, I will definitely NEVER eat or go to J Cody's if I can help it, based on the low food quality and terrible customer service. read more

Went for lunch today. Ordered 16oz rib eye medium rare. 1st steak came out well done. 2nd steak came out raw. 3rd steak came out a cross between medium and medium well. Just said screw it and took it. Steaks not well seasoned at all either. Had to add a1 just for some flavor French fries were soggy and not seaaoned. Last time here for while. I am not a BBQ connoisseur by any means, but I know what I like...and aside from Salt Lick in Austin, J. Cody's is my second place fav BBQ joint. Although, the real reason why I love going to J. Cody's when I'm in town is the creamed corn. That stuff is incredible...so creamy (cream cheese?), and little bits of jalapenos (don't worry, it's not really spicy). I used to come here w/my roommate in college and take a box to-go. Practically half of it was full of corn! Although I enjoy the sides so much, they actually do have really good sausage and I generally enjoy their brisket. The BBQ sauce is a bit ketchup-y, but it tastes decent enough. The turkey is very moist and delicious. Definitely not dried out. Back to the sides though, the okra and tomatoes are so tasty...not mushy, nice-sized pieces of okra and stewed tomatoes and onions. The potato salad is decent, the cornbread w/and w/out jalapenos is great. I haven't tried it, but some of my friends really enjoy the cabbage. If you are looking for some good BBQ and heavenly sides to accompany it, then I'd definitely recommend stopping by when you're in the area. And...you MUST try the creamed corn! read more
