Just returned after my nth visit to the J. Alexander's in Raleigh. Excellent food (as always); my sister and I shared the Alex's Salad and the crabcakes. (We grew up in MD and we gave high marks on the quality of the lump crabmeat in the crabcakes; on the other hand, the kitchen could stand to add some Old Bay to make them truly authentic and flavorful.) The Manhattan was a solid cocktail - so much so that I couldn't actually finish it. Just opted for a glass of the house wine to close. My only - and my recurrent - criticism of the place: Please either buy taller chairs or offer pillows for patrons to sit on. I am not a short woman (5'7"), but I feel like I should just bow my head over the table and eat directly from the plate because it's that close to my face. (If you're old enough, you may recall sitting on phone books when you were a kid to bring you up to table level. Even the super-fabulous, super-elegant Fairview Dining Room at the Washington Duke Inn offered us pillows when friends and I last dined there. (One of us is only 5'3"; she opted for two pilows.)) We ordered the nigiri plate ,the filet mignon and baked potato which had lots of flavor unfortunately lots of fat too . The steak Maui with Mac and cheese which was just okay . We've come here many times as it's nearby and have always enjoyed our experience in the past. However, on our most recent visit, my husband ordered a ribeye medium rare, and was disappointed to find it completely raw and inedible. I'm not sure if it was an off day. We ended up taking it to go since he didn't want to complain and cooking it at home. The ambiance was nice as always and my tuna entree was cooked perfectly. Service was good as well. But I would expect a nicer restaurant like this to cook a steak better than that. read more

The menu was broad and had something for everyone, even those of us trying to not to have an entire dinner of carbs. We came here with a party of five. We had reservations and got seated nearly as soon as we arrived. I was with another person who had been here before and she said they had really good deviled eggs. So when we got the menu, deviled eggs were not on it. She asked the waiter and he said they still had them. We ordered them. When we got them, they were a little dry, good flavor but dry. I attempted to order the broasted chicken which I was told they were out of tonight. My friend attempted to order the beef kabobs, which were a special, and they were out of those too. So she ordered the filet mignon, with mashed potatoes. She liked her food but would have appreciated if the waiter brought the wine menu, to enjoy a nice glass of red wine with her meals, but he never came back with the wine list. My son and I ordered the steak maui. He ordered his rare and it was really fatty. He was really disappointed. Mine was alright but nothing great. Our friend said her veggie burger could have been more well cooked. It wasn't and so the texture was not great. My daughter enjoyed her club sandwich and French fries. So we came here, first time! The egg roll things were absolutely delish! They were perfect! We got the chicken meal which was not that great. We didn't eat it and nor did we complain about it. It was just something my husband and I didn't like. The mash was good and the Mac n cheese was really good. We asked for our check and the server asked us what was wrong with the chicken? And we just told him we didn't like it. He offered us another one or something else. Before we knew he it, he took it off the check and gave us the new bill. This isn't my first time at J. Alexander's, I've eaten here many times back in Florida, particularly the one on US1 in Ft. Lauderdale. This was however my first time here at this Raleigh, NC establishment and the experience was good as it should have been. The restaurant is nestled behind the Crabtree Mall and adjacent fairly new condo apartments (convenient). There is adequate parking and the exterior grounds are well maintained. The building is mostly glass, with stone and teak to complete its architectural design. The inside has a relatively small waiting area, however it didn't take long for our party to be seated. The host staff are pleasant and polite and you're greeted immediately as you enter. The dining area is a little smaller in comparison to those in South Florida, but that's no biggie. They have huge booths along the walls and sizable round table positioned in the middle for your dining pleasure. Additionally, the food too doesn't disappoint. We went here for our anniversary dinner and had a subpar experience. Staff was friendly and service was good, but my wife's red snapper dish was RAW. They tried to make it right, brought it back and recooked the same piece but then it was way overcooked. My steak was very good, green beans were well seasoned but undercooked to my taste and smashed red potatoes were oddly sweet. Manager came by and apologized for the fish but didn't offer to comp anything or offer a free dessert or anything. We will not be going back. J Alexander's Normally a great place to eat and has always been my favorite place for their tuna stack appetizer. Went in tonight. sat at the bar for a few minutes. Got a tuna stack to go, got home and realized it is no longer a tuna stack. Rather, it is now a cucumber stack with some tuna sprinkled in. This appetizer used to be incredible. It was, take a bite, taste nothing but tuna and creamy crab meat mixture - unbelievable! Now take a bite and all you taste is cucumber it overwhelms the stack. I guess they're inserting it to eliminate some of the tuna and crab mixture. Horrible appetizer now will never order again. Cutting corners like this is usually the first step in the overall demise of an establishment. What will they cut the corners on next? read more

We've come here over the years and have seen the degradation in food quality. We had a party of 6 and spent in excess of $350. Service was great but the steak rolls which used to be fantastic were not, the carrot cake which used to be to die for wasn't. Everything in between was so-so ... lacking in seasoning and flavor. We already knew the Ethiopian blend coffee had been replaced, but now more signature items weren't the same. The steak rolls lacked cheese, seasoning and weren't crisp. The carrot used to be moist with a real cream cheese icing ... it had neither. At this price point there are other places that haven't downgraded the quality of their food. We're really disappointed because this used to be one of our go to places!! Since I footed the bill for my friend's birthday celebration, I'm especially disappointed!! We will not be back. read more

My first visit to J. Alexander left much to be desired. My dining expectations were very high given the lavish appearance of this restaurant and the stellar reviews. Unfortunately the dining service and decor didn't match the hype for me. I was able to book my reservation online well in advance. The booking system was perfect. Upon arrival the hostess was kind and professional. The assistant manager greeted us and seated us. He was warm and we appreciated the welcome. We had a tough time deciding what to order and our waitress honestly seemed tired at 7:00 p.m. She was polite but lacked energy and didn't provide menu suggestions like most wait staff do in a restaurant of this caliber. I could not get really excited about the menu as a result. I decided on the 919 Area Code cocktail. Whiskey & ginger beer are also a safe bet. This cocktail was excellent. I later decided on the spicy tuna roll sushi. My friend ordered the steak eggrolls. Neither of us were blown away. My sushi was very similar to the sushi you purchase in the supermarket. The egg rolls were not as good as Chili's southwest eggrolls. Nothing memorable or to write home about. For dessert we had the key lime pie and carrot cake. Both very good choices. Best key lime pie I've had. Great Graham cracker crust and delicious filling. An issue I had was that the dinner items were delivered to our table within minutes. That was questionable to me. Were these items premade ? Fast food is not good and good food is not fast. Read that slowly. The decor has potential but there were many areas of our dining area that could have stood for more lighting. Yes it's a romantic ambiance but our Candle at our table was never even lit. Some of the gold light fixtures near the entrance should be evenly distributed throughout the dining room. Otherwise it's giving... cabin in the woods. My hubby and friends surprised me for my birthday weekend and we dined here. I was not disappointed at all! The ambiance is very romantic and intimate, which is always a plus. Our server was top notch and very attentive. This restaurant was bookmarked and I was happy he picked this spot. He did reservations the night prior and therefore we didn't have to wait upon arrival. We were initially sat at a table but the server honored our request for a booth and she did so without hesitation or attitude another plus. I like the fact they have several options to choose from whether you have the taste for sushi, steak, chicken, burger or seafood. The only downside is they do not have a lot of options for appetizers but I opted for sushi which was plenty! Our food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. I also want to point out they have the freshest water! Lol I am an avid water drinker and not all water taste the same and this was some superb water. Not sure where it came from but it didn't taste like your regular tap water. I ordered the pear martini and it was enough for two maybe three drinks. They did run out of ice cream cake, which I was anxious to try but I opted for cheesecake which was enough to share with our whole table (party of 4). My friends had carrot cake and that was a generous portion as well. So if you opt for dessert trust me it's enough to share! I have eaten here countless times and I always enjoy it. I've visited at several different times, and I've never had to wait. The service is consistently great. I love the food here. It is a sister restaurant and to Stoney River Steakhouse. The best appetizer is the Steak Rolls, the best entree is Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken or the Steak N Fries, and the best (seasonal) dessert is the Powerful Stuff. I have dined at J.Alexander's twice so far and the food and overall experience are particularly good at this establishment, which is located right near Crabtree Valley Mall. We stopped in for a late lunch on Friday 11/26 after our son's football game at Cardinal Gibbons HS which is nearby. To start, my wife and I opted for a cocktail and kiddo with a root beer (to celebrate a win). I went with the 21 Manhattan Martini which is made with Bulliet Rye Whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. It was delish. One only though. My wife got the Elderflower Mojito. She enjoyed it very much. On today's visit we went with a shared order of Deviled Eggs for an appetizer. The flavoring of the eggs was fine and the bacon on top was crisp and cooked right. However, they came right out of the fridge. They were cold, and I prefer deviled eggs a little warmer. But they were tasty and are a good choice for an appetizer. My son ordered the Cobb Salad which we split three ways. The greens were fresh and the ingredients tasty. He ate most of it. The kid is sprouting like a weed recently. My wife ordered the cheeseburger with a side of fries. Yep, a cheat day for her. She said the burger was tasty and seasoned just right and it was cooked to order (medium rare). My son went with a fried chicken sandwich. He ate some of it and the rest was boxed another for another day. I sampled a bite of the chicken. It was moist and the breading was fried crispy and has a nice taste to it. Thumbs up. I got the Ferdinand Sandwich special. It was a take on a French Dip and came with a sauce that was similar but seemed a bit creamier. It was good. The fries were of the thin cut variety which I prefer. Overall, J Alexanders provides a genuinely nice dining experience. The menu is extensive and there is something for everyone. The Steak rolls are by far the best Appetizer I've had in a long time. It was our first time there and we were recommended to go here from everyone in the area. I got the Steak & Fries, MAC and Cheese, and Prime Rib. Fries were bomb! We love a shoe string fry but honestly the steak was just okay. There's lovely art on many of the walls and I'm a huge fan of art so that was nice! We sat at a booth in the dining room but the bar was also nice. Our server, Victor, was great! Super attentive and friendly. I got to sample each Sauvignon Blanc. I was not a fan of the first one but the Craggy Range was delicious. My friend opted for a whiskey cocktail. We started with the salmon dip, which was amazing. I was expecting it to be hot but it was still really good as a cold salmon dip. It would also have been better with Pita points instead of crackers but regardless it was definitely delicious. I would eat it again. The entrees were both exceptional! I got the NY Strip that was cooked just right. It is topped with a butter sauce that complimented it perfectly. The steak was accompanied by their "Not Your Ordinary" baked Macaroni and Cheese. IT. WAS. AMAZING. I am picky with Mac & Cheese and this is now definitely one of my favorites. My friend got the chicken tenders. Hands down, the best chicken tenders I've ever had. What a gem! I met a friend for lunch, as we are always trying new places. We wanted to see if it was casual, dressy, a little more formal, etc. It can be all of the above! Although for dinner, I would elevate it to dressy or semi-formal. It is definitely a place for any celebration. The menu was great, and there is something for everyone. For an appetizer, we had the steak rolls and queso with chips (already starting to feel full). Steak rolls are a must! For the entree, I had the strip steak with Caesar salad, which was a special that day. My steak was seasoned perfectly, and the salad was a typical Caesar. I would love to try something else next time, as the food surrounding us looked amazing and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals.
