Delicious FRENCH DIP SANDWICH fries and horseradish
Scott R.

My dad and uncle wanted a close place to eat and J. Alexander's was my first thought. We were quickly greeted and waited for a table. Once seated we placed our drink order and they asked me what I recommend. I told them I always get the french dip. Next thing you know I tell our server this is a difficult order we need three french dips. She laughs. The service was attentive and everyone at the table loved the food. The ambiance is great for families and also date night. I love this place if you want a salad, a steak or a sandwich like a french dip everything is delicious and you won't be disappointed.

I visited J. Alexander's, and if you're not familiar with the Oak Brook area, just know this restaurant sits a little back in the cut. So make sure you're paying close attention to your GPS when you're heading there. The good news is it's located in a mall area, so there's plenty of parking, which makes it very convenient. The atmosphere is not overly upscale, but it definitely still gives fine dining energy. The low lighting creates a more intimate vibe, making it a great place for a date night, dinner with friends, or even a relaxed evening meal. The food is consistently good, and the drinks are always on point. This time I ordered the baby back ribs with mashed potatoes, and it was my first time trying that dish there. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone good, and the mashed potatoes were a perfect pairing. My friend ordered the pork chop, butterflied and cut open, and she said it was simply amazing. Now let me get to the real reason I keep coming back. The carrot cake. I have had carrot cake from big-name bakeries and small local mom-and-pop spots, and I'm telling you right now, J. Alexander's has the best carrot cake in the world. If anyone wants to debate that, please let me know where I should go try another slice... or better yet, buy me one so we can compare! Because of that carrot cake alone, J. Alexander's will always be in my Top 10. So yes, the food is good, the drinks are great, the atmosphere is nice...

We had made reservations to eat here at this restaurant due to never eating here before. Due to traffic we were unable to make our reservation on time and when we arrived they said they could still accommodate us. After waiting for about 10 min they came to tell us they no longer could accommodate us unless we were willing to wait 2 hours which we did not want to do. The ambiance in the restaurant was very beautiful. Even the bathroom was very nice. The menu you looked like it was going to have some good food but unfortunately we would not be able to stay and see about it due to the long wait.

I went for dinner last night with 2 friends. The meal was good and I received helpful advice from our server on what wine to get based on my palate preference. My veggie burger was delicious and the shoelace fries equally addicting. Unfortunately, after we ordered coffee following our meal, our server completely disappeared. We waited 20 mins for the dessert menu and a 2nd cup of coffee but then left.

Came here for a nice date night pre-show dinner before going to see a play at Drury Lane. The waitstaff was attentive and the food was great. I had the pecan coated trout which was good. I switched the coleslaw side for the broccoli and it was very good. Perfect cooked. The trout could have had more sauce on it. My husband had the pork chop and also liked that a lot. I also had a fleur-de-lis martini that was delicious. The place is large and was a great date night location. I would suggest it for dinner if you are in the area and looking for a nicer dinner experience.

The food here is pretty good. The drinks were very good. The portion size of the dishes were big. The waiter was really nice. We even met the manager, she brought over the complimentary birthday carrot cake which was moist and good. I just hoped for a little more variety of the food. I love salmon and I wasn't impressed with the option.

My boyfriend and I went to J.Alexander's for our anniversary. The food was amazing as expected. I had the cesar salad and the Hyde i think it's called it was a regular grilled chicken sandwich with small cut fries. My boyfriend had the salmon and rice with mac and cheese. The service was amazing my server was top of the line. She checked up on us every chance she got she made us laugh and enjoy our experience even more. The ambiance was amazing very light dim with a touch of romance giving it the right atmosphere for us. We also received a special cake for our anniversary which was a plus. 100/10

The ambiance is great! Excellent service and the has never disappoint. We frequent this establishment often and never have I experienced bad service, or food. Great menu. My favorite entree is the French dip! Thinly sliced and cooked to perfection medium rare! They have the Auju ever! The fries are shoe string thin and not sure what seasoning they sprinkle on them but you won't stop eating them . The Alex salad is the right portion to share with two. Overall no complaints about this restaurant. Sorry I forgot to get a picture of my French dip sandwich.

We knew that this restaurant has been around, but we always "take our time" before we try anything. Like usual, we are always looking to try different restaurants and of course we always read the reviews, check out the menu and have a discussion about it all before we go. Yes, it's that important. We made reservations for a Saturday afternoon and got seated right away. Joe was our waiter. The booth was really nice and so was the ambiance. For the drinks, I got a cranberry juice and he got the lemon drop mojito. His drink was nice and tart. The cranberry juice was just ok. Our friends recommended the chicken pasta soup and Alex's salad. So that's what we started with. My husband knows that I'm a harsh critic (the female version of Gordon Ramsey) and a very picky eater, so he let me taste everything first. I went through the soup with a spoon to see what was in it. It consisted of chicken pieces with penne pasta and a variety of vegetables in a cream based broth. It was sprinkled with parsley. I wasn't sure about it so I took a small bite just to see. It was surprisingly delicious! A little salty, but still acceptable. Everything in the soup blended together perfectly. He agreed. Next was Alex's salad...it was amazing! One of the best salads I had in a long time. Fresh and tasty ingredients, but the ranch dressing and the croutons were top tier. We both absolutely loved it! In the meantime, the service was slightly off. Joe forgot our extra ranch dressing and only gave us 3 paper napkins for the both of us. What are we supposed to do with just 3 napkins? We definitely needed more than 3. Ok, back to the food... For the main dish we wanted to try something "safe" since this was our first time here. We both ordered the steak burger. According to the menu, the beef is made from tenderloin and ribeye on a brioche bun. Instead of fries, we got the smashed potatoes. Ohhh mmm gee! We had steak burgers in the past, tasting like regular burgers. This J. Alexander burger actually tastes like steak! Annnddd the bun was fresh and toasted to perfection. The smashed potatoes were delicious too. No need for salt, pepper or gravy. It was perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. Who knew that basic items on the menu (soup, salad, side) to be this damn good?! Everything was delicious, but the service was still slightly off. I told my husband that I would give this restaurant 4 stars because of the service. He told me to give it 5 because Joe really tried and to give him a benefit of the doubt. I wasn't totally convinced until a bit later. Remember what I said earlier in this review? I am a harsh critic. A female Gordon Ramsey. I critique everything and everyone when a review is being made by us. We received the check. $92 and some change. Ok, cool. After my husband paid the bill, Joe returned and thanked my husband and addressed him. By his last NAME. Out of all of the restaurants my husband and I ate out of over the years, NOBODY has ever addressed my husband by his name. That means sooo much! And because of that, Joe totally redeemed himself and now I'm writing this 5 star review for everyone to see. Yes, we will be back for more!

We had a birthday reservation at 7:30pm and we arrived a few minutes early. It took 25 minutes to be seated as the place was very busy. Erin was our server and she was awesome. Very attentive service! The food was so delicious. I had the Steak Maui marinated ribeye. The Filet Mignon was fantastic. The French dip torched it. Nothing better. Frankly the best we've had in a long time. The complimentary carrot cake was delicious. I would recommend this place but at a time whenever it's not so busy. Overall it's a good place to dine.

I wanted to treat my sister for her birthday at J. Alexander's in Oak Brook. We had a very pleasant experience with our server, Madison. She was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu items. We started with the Hong Kong Shrimp Appetizer; it was enough for three to four people, with plenty of shrimp and a tangy salad dressing. My sister ordered a house salad, and I ordered the Red River Chili. For my main course, I ordered the pork chop with Apricot Glaze, which was delicious, along with crisp broccoli and smashed potatoes. My sister ordered the French Dip Sandwich with au jus and shoestring fries. It was so big that she took half of it home. We ordered Carrot Cake (a little too sweet for me), a big seller on the dessert menu, and coffee. I would encourage you to make reservations. We would go back in a heartbeat. There's plenty of parking.

Ask the Community - J. Alexander's

Is it warm enough at their outdoor dining?

The answer to this question is subjective based on the comfort level of the individual, but they do have outdoor propane heaters that typically do a nice job of keeping patios warm in cooler weather.

Is there outdoor seating?

Yes

Is it Family friendly? Have a 1 year old & 4 adults. Yes? No?

I believe it is, would totally take young ones there

As soon as we entered, we were greeted with warm smiles and a gracious welcome. Award-winning managers Jack and Mike also checked in with us periodically throughout the evening, which was incredibly thoughtful and attentive. Our table was beautifully decorated with red roses, celebratory sprinkles, elegant gold chargers, matching napkin rings, and a handwritten anniversary card. We were also welcomed with a glass of champagne! These thoughtful and classy touches made us feel truly celebrated. Our server, Terre, was outstanding--charismatic, warm, welcoming, and attentive throughout the entire evening. We began in the bar, enjoying Happy Hour from 4:30-6:00 p.m. We sampled several appetizers, including incredibly fresh oysters and delicious tempura lobster bites. From there, we transitioned into an amazing dinner featuring a bone-in ribeye, lobster tail, and decadent lobster mashed potatoes. Everything was absolutely delicious! At 6:30pm an 2 piece band played listening to smooth jazz. Very nice... To finish the evening, we enjoyed delicious bananas Foster--a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The combination of exceptional service, delicious food, beautiful ambiance, and thoughtful anniversary touches made this a truly memorable celebration. Thank you, Eddie V's and Terre, for making our anniversary so special! We'll definitely be back! I give you 5 forks! 5 stars on food, service and ambiance

I ordered the Texas Sausage and a Caesar salad that was anything but traditional. The seasoned pumpkin seeds and anchovy took it up a notch. A friend joined me last minute and ordered the Gulf Fried Shrimp with Cajun fries, and that was another 10/10. And we can't forget the Raspberry Refresher--a blend of house rosé, Hendrick's gin, lychee, and raspberry purée. Delicious and officially my drink of Summer 2026! Simple bar eats with an unexpected twist, and I loved every bite. The only thing that made it home was the rest of the sausage stack, and that was intentional! I love throwing them in the air fryer the next morning and pairing them with fried or boiled eggs. Yum!

A beautiful circular room that was glass enclosed with views of outside and the bar area. They had sheet curtains incase groups wanted a bit more privacy. The room also had a personal fan for air circulation and an independent speaker system to adjust music volume. For drinks, our group got a variety of cocktails, beer, and wine. I got the Hugo Spritz which was a great portion & tasted amazing. While some cocktails on menu were expensive, my Spritz was $14 and my friend's tito's dirty martini was only $13. Definitely consider just ordering a classic versus one of their mixology offerings if you're looking for a budget conscious option. For starters, we shared the Stuffed Mushrooms, Calamari, and Spinach & Artichoke Dip. The portions were good for sharing. The Stuffed Mushrooms had a seafood mix in them with a delicious sauce paired under. The Calamari had a hint of spicy to it but nothing crazy. The Spinach & Artichoke Dip had a good truffle note and was creamy; the dip could have used a few more chips but some individuals used the complimentary bread slices. Most individuals got a soup or salad before the mains. The Lobster Bisque Soup was rich and creamy with a good amount of lobster. Others tried the Caesar, Chop, and Field Green Pear Salads. The Pear Salad could have been shared by two people since it was a starter salad. Everyone raved about the flavors of these. For mains, most people got steaks and shared side dishes of Brussel Sprouts, Truffle Steak Fries, and Asparagus. The sides were shareable for 2-3 people I would say. I ordered the Seared Scallop Pasta and loved it! The noodles were al dente, two sauces paired nicely together, and loved the vegetables that brightened up the dish. For desserts, we shared the Rocky Road Bread Pudding, Fudgy Chocolate Cake, and Orange Vanilla Cream Cheesecake. Every option brought its own flavor and offered something for everyone. I tried the Bread Pudding and Chocolate Cake and WOW! I'd certainly order either one again. While all of the food, drinks, and atmosphere were great, I struggled some with the service. Our main server was Christine who guided us through the menu nicely, made sure the room was comfortable for us, and had a sweet demeanor. The pacing of food was a bit off where it felt like dishes were being taken off the table with a couple of bites left just to serve the next course. I'm not a fan of wasting food when out and I felt these little bites could have been saved and sent home with guests. If we paid for it, we should ALWAYS be asked. There were a couple of side requests that came to the table very delayed and one meal that came at the end of dinner. I'm sure it is difficult to manage a large group setting but I felt disappointed to see items wasted, pacing rushed, and certain people waiting to enjoy till additional items came.

A group of family and friends visited Pappadeaux (with an advance reservation) this past Saturday,…read moreSeptember 5, my mother's 93rd Birthday. With disappointment, I write a review that is for the first time less than stellar. Our family and friends have been guests of Pappadeaux for many years. And for the past several years, it has become her restaurant of choice to celebrate her birthday each year. She loves Pappadeaux. It is only because of her love for Pappadeaux that we continue to arrange dinner for our group that averages between 20-25, simply because Pappadeaux is not group friendly; does not extend itself to make efforts to accommodate. Let me qualify the review by saying I am very aware of Pappadeaux's policy to reserve space for a maximum of 10 in one party, though they do accept reservations for more without guaranteeing the private dining room but would endeavor to accommodate. What we are told each year and clearly understand is the use of the private room requires its own staff and logistical advance planning, which is why I make the reservation well in advance. Though they can't guarantee the room, they make a note of our request and advise us to check with the manager on duty, who would make the decision. On September 5th, we were told by the manager (Julio) that the private room was not available because they didn't have any staff that could cover that area. He said he would have to pull staff from other areas to accommodate us. And in order to assure us a good dining experience, he would seat us together with the public to guarantee us a better dining experience. Being a business owner, I clearly understood and graciously accepted the area he suggested which indeed could accommodate us all. UNTIL, I walked by the private dining room by coincidence soon thereafter and noticed a group of 10 that was not only seated in the private room but was being SERVED by a SERVER, who Julio (the manager on duty) told me minutes before was not available. On my way walking by the room sometime later (it was nearby), I noticed a different group of 10 was seated and being served in the private room that was not available to us. I do realize our group was larger (21) but however they assigned to serve the two groups of 10 (total 20) could have accommodated us. We waited hours for food anyway. Thus, my complaint is not that the room was not available; it appears that we were lied to, as the room in fact was available and STAFFED. Julio's reasoning for accommodating us in the public dining area was to ensure we'd have a wonderful dining experience. Well, that didn't work out so well either. We received less than quality service. The food was exceptional as always. We were assigned four tables and three servers. Patrick and Chey were phenomenal servers. However, 3 guests at the table to whom the third server was assigned, had not received their meal after two hours, while others at their table had eaten. I know the timing because I know what time we were seated and looked at my watch after noticing the guests still without food at 6:08pm. When I asked one of the guests what they ordered, it was simply gumbo and a salad. No one was preparing their food; there was little to prepare! They were forgotten! I asked another server for assistance, who went to the kitchen, got approval to serve us and immediately assisted until the entire group was finally served. But they unfortunately opted to take their food home by that time. The assigned server did not return until near check time. I could have lived with all of it, except BEING LIED TO. The private room was always available, was STAFFable and STAFFED. Whoever the space was given to came in after us. Though my mother loves Pappadeaux, coupled with the fact that we spent nearly $2k Saturday and each year before at this event, not including what we spend in visits during the year, we would need to be TREATED AS WELL AS THE OTHER GUESTS to return. We must not be made to feel UNWELCOME, UNDERAPPRECIATED and UNDERVALUED at any time. Otherwise, it would become necessary for us to explore other restaurant options that are more customer friendly to groups and would appreciate our business. Again, I don't mind the policy, but why not staff the room in advance when a reservation is made 1-2 weeks in advance, rather than having to check and see who is available or willing to stay in the moment, especially when you know we are coming! I believe that is a policy that needs to be revisited. I would hope that Pappadeaux's values our business enough to respond and contact us. Looking forward to hearing from you. Pastor Olivia Johnson

The tomato sauce was flavorful, and the shaved Parmesan and arugula complemented the dish beautifully. Unfortunately, the arancini themselves were disappointing, as the coating was much too thick compared to the small amount of rice filling inside. For our entrées, my husband ordered the Chicken Parmigiana. The chicken was unfortunately very dry and overly salted. I chose the pappardelle with short rib ragù. The fresh pasta was excellent--perfectly made with a wonderful texture--but the ragù was also overly salted, which overshadowed what could have been a great dish. One of the highlights of our evening was the service. Our waiter was attentive, friendly, and provided excellent service throughout our meal. The hostess, who may have been the owner, also stopped by our table to check on us, which we appreciated. Overall, this certainly wasn't the worst Italian restaurant we've visited, and there were several things we enjoyed. However, the entrées ultimately fell short of our expectations, especially for a special dinner.
