Good chain...classic steakhouse. The Dayton site is particularly nice, but located too close to too many other good places. Unfortunately, the district manager (for this district) has gone through a few too many managers, of late. I get the feeling that, despite good ratings for the Dayton establishment, things are about to go South for this district of J.'s. Waaay South! That's why it only gets 2 stars from me! read more

Usually my favorite place. But not tonight. Service was very very slow. I don't know why. No drink offered. Everyone else seems to have a waiter/waitress. Everything else was great. The food was awesome. The rest of the dinner was good. I guess everybody's entitled to one bad night. read more

I've been to J Alexander's twice now and both times have been great! The menu is standard American but so delicious! They have a speciality appetizer called Huevos Rolls and they are to die for! There are 6 crispy egg rolls that have a Mexican taste to them. The house salad is also very good. It is a big portion so it's not a bad idea to spilt it with someone before your entree, it will be enough! I definitely recommend call ahead seating especially if you come here on a weekend. It is very typical to have around an hour wait for dinner on a Friday/Saturday evening. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is because it is very similar to Cheesecake Factory (minus the cheesecake) and BJ's brewhouse. It wasn't anything I haven't had before but I will definitely be coming back :) read more

I've sailed from port to port throughout the world, and J. Alexander's affiliates have never let me down when it comes to a great meal... Steak to be exact. My wife had steak and I had prime rib... Whenever I eat steak, the standard for the best is J. Alexander's. My first was Stony River in Georgia. The rubs are consistent and they add flavor to allow the steak to taste like a steak, and not a piece of meat soaked in its own juices as some steak places do. The portions were outstanding and they were the best cuts. The service was outstanding. I never had to wait for anything and the service staff exemplifies 'team work' in every respect. This was a special occasion dinner, and we were not disappointed at all. If I could afford it, I would treat the staff to the best restaurant in town, but they're already employed there. read more

Greeters were rude and condescending. They acted like they were too busy to be bothered. Restaurant was freezing. So much so, that we had to be completely obnoxious and ask to move tables. That helped! But the servers are rushed (probably understaffed like everywhere else) and food came 60 seconds after my salad. It was good, but when you're dropping a hundred bucks for a meal; you expect a certain amount of ambiance. It was lacking in atmosphere and signs all over the restaurant stating "please limit experience to 90 minutes" made us feel even more rushed and unwelcome. We likely won't be back. read more

I absolutely love this restaurant. The food and atmosphere is always amazing. I recommend getting a side salad to start because it comes with their amazing honey-drizzled croissants. Their Mac and Cheese and French Fries are the best sides in my opinion. I love their steak, ribs and pastas! read more

Excellent evening and excellent meal. There was so much food served and it was all delightful. Highly recommend the pear martinis! Our server was Sammy and she was great . I'd forgotten this restaurant in the rush of trying to patronize local and non chain places. While I love those, when a chain does it right they are spectacular. We will be back. read more

We were seated right on time for our reservations........ To a table that had water dripping from the air conditioning over two of us! We asked the waitress to be reseated, and she said she would have to ask the manager!? She returned and said he would "mop the water off the duct work, there are no more tables to seat seven" (even though I saw one empty) Drinks came slow, as we got dripped on, and were very weak. Salads were good, but entree arrived before anyone got hardly half done with the Most!! This caused us to let salad be taken, as not enough room at table for each person salad and entree plate.... Waitress returned to check on our entree, asking if everything was ok. My friend ask if we could get raincoats, it's still dripping! The manager then returned and "mopped the ducts" above our food, and just oaf fed at my friends comment!! We had to ask about deserts, and after ordering, were told coffee would be a little bit, they had to brew it!! Silly me, thought restaurants kept that made! Upon bring our bills, the waitress told us she had told the manager our water problem better not effect her tip! Bottom line.... Food...... ok, but not what it was a few years ago before corporate take over Service and managers attitude.......need improvement Price for the above...... Very over price Drop! read more

Rest in peace, Redlands aka J. Alexander's, another victim of Covid. This used to be our go to for a great dining experience. The service was still top notch and great. The menu and pricing has gone off the deep end. Prices have skyrocketed and they've actually removed items that were once included. Want the fantastic house salad with your entree? Sorry, that's now an extra $4.95. Oh and they've changed the salad, too. It's not the same- mostly iceberg lettuce now. Salmon last year was $18.95 with a salad and side. It's now $28 with no salad (It was excellent but still). $12.95 chicken fingers? Now $19.95! For chicken fingers! Soda is $3.50 and they're Coke, not Pepsi for those who care like I do. The server was great as I stated and very apologetic about the numerous menu changes and dutifully blamed covid as I'm sure management has instructed. I feel bad for restaurants due to Covid but I've been to plenty of others that are not making these drastic changes. It just feels like we're being price gouged for food instead of masks and hand sanitizer. Don't punish patrons or you won't have any coming back. read more

Seating area around bar was dirty from precious guest. Bar tenders busy but no excuse for food and kapkin on floor from precious guest. Free appetizer courtesy of Holiday Inn was good although hostess tried to give it to another table. Bourbon was 11.50 which is too much for a small pour. Dinner was undercooked Salmon on a avg Caesar. Feedback met with bad attitude bar tender. So off went the tip. Overall left wondering why I ever went there. Definitely gone down hill from previous visits. Bartender changed over for no apparent reason. First girl had a good attitude. She said she was knew and apologized for not knowing pricing. She was pushed out but more experienced girl that sent the experience straight down the hill. Won't go back. read more

Just had lunch at J Alexander's today. All four of us had something different and everyone was thrilled with their meal. Great blue cheese salad dressing. Beef Taco, grilled salmon, shrimp Louis salad, and grilled pork tenderloin. Then carrot cake to wrap it up. Wow. Well done! read more

I've been to j Alexander's a dozen times. My go to is the prime rib. The au jus makes the already great cut just pop. It's my favorite prime rib. Taste and consistent. Also I enjoy the bar even at hectic dinner hours. What really makes me enjoy a great meal is the service. Just seems like they are engaged and knowledgeable. Dollar for dollar and proven consistency make this a staple. Other dishes of note rattlesnake pasta, pork chops, and the mash potato side. read more

Fantastic atmosphere! Amazing food! I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to share a special evening or in my case brunch out, with good company. Only reason I rated a 4/5 instead of a 5/5 was our waiter wasn't the best. We had to ask multiple times for other members of the wait staff to find him, and ask for any refills we wanted. read more

Not worth the hassle. Rude, pushy counter attendant and limited menu made it a miserable experience. Won't try it again until they get over the privileged millennial routine. Wine was poor, food was fair at best. Sorry, but I'll definitely go across the street to carvers next time. read more

The Redlands in Columbus was great, so I decided to try one semi-closer to home. When I arrived to pick up my to go order, the hostess went to to check, came back and didn't say anything. I stood there for a few minutes looking dumb until I asked "Can I pay for my food now?" Then I was told to wait until the other employee got off the phone... when I finally get home I'm ready for my ribeye. It was so tough. I ordered it medium, and the steak I had was almost well done. The macaroni was average. I called to let them know my steak was overdone and was offered to bring it back, but I live 30 minutes away so there was no way I was driving another hour basically for a steak that could possibly be wrong again. The manager was nice, but after explaining that I don't live down the street, she could've offered a discount for the next time or something. Waste of my $42 read more

We audienced on a rainy day. The ambience and crowd were on the conservative and pleasantly social side. He had a fish entree, and I had a salad. The way they made it was so full of flavors and appealing in presentation, too. I forget what else we ate... we really appreciated the staff's bright engagement, and being aware of our desire to converse with one another. It was a good balance that positively contributed to our experience at the restaurant. read more

Coming into town, I had to swing by my favorite restaurant. I was told that ever since the new management took over, J's wasn't what it use to be.... This used to be a favorite spot for my husband and I for years. First time visiting since Covid restrictions and what a huge disappointment. Mr. Jack's chicken had very little breading with a mushy texture and off taste that lingered. Used to love the coleslaw, but the flavor was off there as well. After a few bites, my entire meal was thrown away. Used to enjoy the con queso, but it tasted like someone just warmed up some gooey Velveeta. Husband was sorely disappointed with his Steak Brazzo as well. To add insult to injury, it was over $70 for the two of us, not including tip. We won't be returning after this experience. read more

Worst experience ever. Drove to hours to take family out to dinner only to be treated by the staff and management horribly. Six adults were sat at a four-top. The plates didn't even fit. The salads were served before the appetizer. In fact, we were so rushed, we didn't even finish a course before the next plates arrived. The steak was overcooked and the salmon was raw, but we were treated so badly, we didn't even send it back. The artichoke appetizer wasn't even cooked on the inside, charred on the outside. What a huge disappointment all around. We will NEVER be back. When we finally talked to a manager, she comped the appetizer and one salad from our bill. Seriously? read more

I dined here in January. Food and waitress were good. I had a 5pm reservation, we ordered steaks and cocktails. At about 7pm, what appeared to be the mgr stopped by our table to let us know that their next reservation was there and they needed the table! She did not even offer to move us to the bar. I have never experienced this at another restaurant and was livid. I left a review with the reservation service when they asked for a survey and never heard back about the horrible service we received. I will NEVER go back and have told many about this experience. read more

This is a nice restaurant and the ambience is very good. The bar is great and the bar tenders always friendly. My big problem is the service ! This has happened to me several times here and so all servers need a lesson in how to correctly wait a table. When I pay this kind of money for a meal I expect them to give enough time and be organized enough to remove the plates from the previous course. Bringing out the entree when the salad plates are on the table, and some of our party still eating the salad is not acceptable ! There is no rush !! With a little better organization I would feel much better about coming here !!! read more

Had business clients in town, and went for lunch. There were 7 of us. 3 at one table and 4 at another table. The table of 4 got their lunch 10 minutes before we had gotten ours. We discovered after the waitress walked away that we had no silverware and two of the entrees at our table were cold. Waitress did not return until it was check time and we were out of drinks long before that. Our clients recommended an alternative restaurant during their next visit. We agreed. Their response was, "we will do better next time". So how does that work? I know, next time I'll say, Gosh, I hope we get good service. Hope, is not on the menu. read more

Enjoyed a great Prime Rib meal on J. Alexander's patio. The food, wine and service were incredible.

Went there last week had a reservation and somehow they gave the table to another party. They said they just sat down? Received free appetizers and a bad table in the middle of the restaurant. Glad we weren't allergic to the appetizers because they didn't ask what we wanted just brought it out. This restaurant is going downhill used to be a favorite no longer. And it took 15 mins to get drinks wish them luck no longer will go there read more

If you're not dressed for a classy outing you will be looked at in a strange way when entering this establishment. The service was adequate, but our waitress was lacking any and all personality. The menu has what appears to be plenty of good choices. However the maui ribeye was awful. The steak was drowning in marinade and it was not edible. I've heard good things about this place just never experienced any myself. Definitely disappointed and this was probably my last trip to J. Alexander's. read more

The French Dip/Sliced Prime Rib Sandwich is out of this world delicious. They cook the steak medium well so if you want it well-done, you will need to tell them. This place is absolutely delicious. My boyfriend and I love to come here when we want to treat ourselves to a nice, without a doubt delicious meal. Of course, we cannot leave the place spending under $20 - but the atmosphere is great. My parents and I were looking for a good steak for lunch today. Too bad we went to Redlands - apparently the person who came up with the recipe for their Maui steak (off the dinner menu) doesn't like steak as the marinade overwhelmed the flavor of the steak. Seriously. I will say it was cooked to order perfectly. A perfect ribbon of pink. The 'smashed' potatoes needed seasoning. The server was good. Not great as toward the end of our meal (we could only stomach half our steaks...we're gonna try to, I don't know - rinse them off or something, at home), our server came around less and less. Anyway, if you want a good steak go some other place. You won't find it there. read more

My favorite meal is the Ceaser Salad with chicken. There's something about the dressing that I crave. It's not to pungent, rather mild. Perfect. My family also loves the Rattlesnake Pasta. Let me start by saying this is one of my and my wife's favor restaurants. However, we just recently went to the Centerville location which is where we normally go. We had always in the past under different management been treated very well. We frequent them often as my in-law's like it as well. But this visit did not fare so well. Up on being seated we ask the hostess if we could have another chair as they were planning on seating three people in a booth that was in my opinion meant for two. We were talked to very rudely by the hostess so I ask to talk to the manager. The manager shows up about 5 minutes later with an attitude, saying that this was all they had to offer and it was being done because of covid-19. This I can completely understand (even though there was space to add a chair and still meet the covid-19 protocol. What I don't understand is why the hostess and manager were so rude. I own a business and if one of my employees talked to my customers the way I was talked to by the hostess and manager they would be fired. I had to ask the manager to leave my table so that I could relax and try to enjoy my meal. I'm not sure I will go back (at least not while that manager is there (one attitude breeds another)). It's sad because this was one of our favor place to go out to eat. Saddened by rude people. read more

To start with, it took nearly five minutes before I could order a drink. And I was one of three at the bar. The bartender then started cleaning and talking with co-workers. She came back much later. I ordered the turkey burger and it was raw. I ate around the edges and said I was finished. I mentioned it was raw and she took to the kitchen. On her return she took it off my bill but never said a word. The bartenders seemed more interested in talking among themselves than helping the patrons. They were also just rude. Second time I have had a bad experience. Seems to be a patter. Just seems really poorly managed. No one seemed to care. Bad service and bad food. This is the one in Norwood, OH. It used to be my go to for business lunches. I think I will find a new place to go. read more
