Room for improvement. We were there at 12:15 Saturday, June 27. 1. Dining area was very dark. The waitress said bulbs keep failing. I think it was a slow period with few diners, and only half the lights were turned on. We changed to a window table. 2. We ordered coffee immediately. It was lukewarm. We asked for fresh coffee. It took some time to get it. Not the best taste. I needed sugar, when I usually drink it black. 3. Coffee cups are just too small. Not refilled quickly. When we order coffee with our meal, we want a decent sized cup. Preferably a mug. The cups themselves looked naked without a saucer underneath. You need a saucer for those cups. We sometimes order to go. When we dine in, we go for the ambience. It didn't exist today. Maybe we'll stick with ordering takeout. If you order takeout, skip the fries. They are in the same container as the other hot food, and they are soggy when you get them home. Both the Cole slaw and smashed potatoes are 5 star. We highly recommend the ribs and the key lime pie. Alexanders or Redlands we have eaten at in our travels and they are consistency amazing. service: Wyatt was an excellent hospitality professional. As always with J. Alexanders, every member of the waitstaff was unfailing amazing. bar: I drank a Rhinegeist Truth IPA and thought it an excellent beer. my 75th birthday, my family wanted to take me somewhere special. I always thought J Alexander's was so special. The service was always impeccable in the food. The chicken pasta soup was so good. That was the real reason I picked J Alexander's.. My sister called two days before to say we had eight people coming. They told her that you could not make a reservation. They did not take reservations. They said they had a table for six but come on in and we would work something out. When we got there, that's what we were told. The tables were bolted to the floor and could not be moved together. They only had tables for four the tables for six already had someone sitting in it. So we took two tables side-by-side. Two of us that our table ordered water with lemon one came water with lemon nice ice. The next one at the same time just water no ice no lemon nothing. They came to pasta soup that I had thought about repeatedly, I don't know what they did to it. It had been quite a while since I had been there, but this soup was sour. It was so bad. I just sent it back after two bites. So I ordered the salmon. The rice was great. It was very good. My sister ordered a steak medium what she got was one well done they did redo the steak for her. Because it was my birthday, they offered me a piece of carrot cake, which was very nice, but I had cake and ice cream back at my house for everyone so I asked them to please put that in a box so I could take it with me. I was told they couldn't do that. They could not put it in a box. It had to be eaten there. I'm just saying that J Alexander's did not make my birthday memorable in a good way. I ordered my steak, medium rare. It came to the table. Well done. The servers were snotty and cold to us. I tried to call. I had to get a reservation and they said they didn't take reservations. We showed up but they did not accommodate us. They said us at two tables we found out later. There was a party room that we could've got this was for my sister 75th birthday, which was miserable. We didn't get to sit together, we were treated rudely and my order was wrong. I'm a fan of J Alexander's so I decided to stop in Monday night for a night cap. I had the Kentucky Old Fashioned and the Doppelgänger. The Old Fashioned was my favorite. The bartender was very knowledgeable about the cocktail menu. I was here at the end of the evening, so the bar area was not very crowded. Maybe 6 people total. They served me old Mac n cheese on a $68 carry out order. I use Resy with my AmEx to find good restaurants, I'll definitely give feedback about this restaurant. The bag had no cutlery or napkins. Like they just threw it together. Second try at this restaurant. First time the steak was like shoe leather. So, I decided I actually wanted to have my Mac n cheese so I called the restaurant to ask for a fresh order. The manager is truly the problem. He was very arrogant and made me feel like it was impossible for them to have made an error. When I returned the order the young hostess looked at it and acknowledged it should not have been served like that. Tried this on a recommendation. I had the emerald shrimp with a side Cesar. The cesar was simple and pretty good, the only feedback for the cesar was that is was overdressed a little bit. The emerald shrimp had a nice light fry and good flavor. The others in my party had the jumbo shrimp and cajun trout. They both like their meals. I had an old fashioned and it was made very well. I revisited after not having been there in years. I ate there a lot 20 years ago. I remember it as classy, good food, and a relaxing environment. While the atmosphere was still pleasant, the overall experience has noticeably declined. They took my phone number to text me when the table was ready. But really used it to harass me about a survey after eating. They seated us in the too small for most people booths so I sucked my gut in . The steak arrived as a mystery item as opposed to what I ordered. Our server spoke just enough words to validate herself as human, and not a fembot. Overall, the skyhigh prices weren't in line with the output. The salad was as good as I remember, so was the queso. When I left, I revisited my farting experience. read more

Went to J. Alexander's for my boyfriend's early birthday dinner. Our waitress did not make our experience better. My boyfriend ordered the rattlesnake pasta and was pleased with portions. We noticed the chicken was sliced very small and was hard to find. I ordered the salmon and macaroni & cheese. The macaroni and cheese was sweeter than I've had here. The salmon was grilled perfectly and was definitely the favorite part of the meal. Lastly, my boyfriend was given a piece of cake for his bday. The waitress did not ask what type of cake we wanted. Hostess stand staff are clueless. At first we were told the rest of our party had arrived and were in the bar seating. I called my son to learn they had NOT arrived yet. Then I was told we couldn't be seated until they arrived. HMM, never had this issue before! Finally a mgr, saw this and we were seated immediately. Later I watched other tables and saw partial seating while their other people arrived later. Our server was still green and didn't realize the importance of checking back with the table as soon as the food arrived. My son's steak was not totally there was he had ordered, but consumed 1/2 before deciding the remainder would be fine for his dog at home. My first choice was Firebirds and everyone else agreed I was correct. We eat there several times a month and Michelle always takes care of us and the food is perfect. We came to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday because she's a big fan of prime rib. J. Alexander's has a wonderful prime rib and a beautiful atmosphere. It is perfect for celebration. Our service was admittedly very slow and we had trouble figuring out who our server was for the first half of our meal. However, once we ordered, the food was delicious big shout out to those shoestring french fries. *chef kiss* I also want to highlight the martinis. On a scale of "1 to food in Dayton", this is a 20 star restaurant. It can't be a secret that food in the OH is average at best but food in Dayton is underwhelming. We stay at a Holiday Inn Express yearly for WGI Championships. 3.5 stars is the general ceiling in the surrounding area. The pics for J.Andersons on Yelp look like the food is served on melamine plates...the reality could not be further from the truth! 6 nights here this year. We had the best food in Cincinnati and opted for Chappy's over J.Anderson's one night because of the horrible Yelp food pics. (Hard pass on Chappy's "unsocial" house) We had a few free hours on our last night and ran out to J.Andersons. It's lovely!! You can tell by the glass ware for cocktails that there is thought given to the details. We stayed and found a corner at the bar to eat. The place was packed! Long and short, martinis were outstanding & the food even better! Service was attentive without being intrusive. All the qualities of fine dining. Loved it all from start to finish! read more

We hadn't been to J Alexander's in years and are so glad we returned! We came mid-afternoon, so were seated in the bar right away. The restaurant looked the pretty much the same but perhaps refreshed from the last time we were there. Our server was very cheerful and attentive. My husband and I wanted to share a salad to start, so they divided that in the kitchen for us so we didn't have to try to do that at the table. The salad was very fresh and the blue cheese dressing was amazing! We both ordered the prime rib and smashed potatoes for dinner, and what a good call that was! We ordered the smaller cute of prime rib but it was a very generous serving. Both the prime rib and mashed potatoes were delicious. The staff taking carry out orders were not familiar with the menu. My order was not given to me in a timely manner although I was waiting outside the host area. Over a number of years, I celebrated my birthdayi at J. Alexander's. It made my day more special.

We were coming home from a festival and decided we were hungry. I have not been here since before Covid but the thought of nice piece of prime rib sounded perfect. I was not disappointed; the service was on point as expected. We split the Alex salad; they were nice enough to plate it for us in the kitchen. The prime rib was cooked a perfect medium rare and the horseradish dip was tasty with a little kick. I really liked the tea cup of au jus, it was the perfect size to dip into. We skipped desert but I think I need to go back soon and grab that carrot cake. Overall, tasty food with excellent service. We plan to come back soon! read more

Our Caesar salad was perfectly dressed, many restaurants over dress salads. Our bartender Corey was adorable, professional and very friendly! My steak was very good, but my loaded potato was room temperature. The women's bathroom was dirty and the only handicap accessible bathroom was out of service. Visiting a friend, he took me out for a birthday dinner. This was the location he surprised me with. I will say, they had me at the first cocktail. Entrance is clean and welcoming; the hostess immediately greeted us warmly and professionally. We had a reservation and were immediately sat. The table was clean and the server was slow to warm up, he seemed a tidly bit annoyed that I was unsure of what to order but also made no recommendations to assist or speed up my process. Not to the fret, I had my friend who speaks highly of this restaurant. We narrowed down some options and we're off to the races. The Ahi Tuna is generally served raw, however, I opted to have it seared medium, this I believe gave it more flavor and did not take away from the meal, the tuna was still juicy, still soft and marinated and melted in your mouth. So good! You're able to go with the chef selected sides OR which I thought was a lovely touch and option, you can swap any side out for a side of your choice. I opted for the Mac n' Cheese and to keep the Tomatoes, its not every day you get those as a side; I wanted to see what it was all about, let me tell you, I was surprised. They too were juicy and tasteful and of good size; definitely not the typical tomato one would find sliced on a burger. I had a taste of my friends steak, it was delicious, even better with the sauce provided. They are known for their Carrot Cake, however, I failed to take a photo of it, but I have noticed there are plenty of photos on the reviews of their Carrot Cake and let me be among many to say that their Carrot Cake does not disappoint! So warm, so moist, so soft, not too sweet and just oh so yummy. As its October and we are all in the pumpkin mood, I opted for their seasonal Pumpkin Cheesecake and it was delicious! Definitely not store bought, it was firm, perfectly chilled, including the plate; whipped cream was consistent ad also firm, the crust was flakey and had the perfect thickness and consistency. Each forkful gratified the senses. Coffee could have been hotter, didn't seem fresh, however this could possibly been due to the cold cream provided as it did alter the temp, but I find this is less noticeable if the coffee starts off hot to begin with vs warm. All and all, the very delightful and enjoyable experience from a first timer. If ever traveling other states and there's a J. Alexander's, I may have to pop in and give another location a try, but my experience at this location was top notch! read more

I had the pleasure of having dinner at J. Alexander's this weekend with a group of 6 for a family member's birthday. I had been here once before for drinks at the bar and this was my first experience dining here. I was very impressed! First, this is a beautiful restaurant! It's warm and inviting with a cool modern yet old school steakhouse charm. We were immediately greeted by a very friendly server who was fantastic! She was on it and never skipped a beat during the entire dinner. Normally I would order a steak (and I'll be back to try one here) but I ordered the Seared Ahi salad. It was amazing! I can't enough about this salad! So tasty and definitely a step up from a traditional boring salad. The Ahi was seared to perfection and the dressing was spot on. Everyone in our group enjoyed their dinners very much and we couldn't have been happier with the service. I definitely recommend J. They had our reservation and gave us our table promptly. However, it was a table next to the kitchen, at which time I normally ask for a different table and knock off a star in my review. However, the booths were built in such a way that we were tastefully isolated from any hubbub. The service was quite good and the food (and drinks!) came out fast! We all had the rib-eye and they were nicely cooked. Their rib-eye has a sweet sauce on it (which we asked about so we were totally informed of). The sauce was fine but I'd probably do the prime rib next time. They had a roasted cauliflower side on the Features card. I'd kinda like to take the chef to the woodshed for that one. No oil, no seasoning, no spice. Just bits of cauliflower shoved in the roster. No more effort than that. That's why my review is 4 stars, not 5. The broccoli also appeared to be simply steamed and not seasoned. I could do that stuff at home but I don't -- I put more effort into it and the chef should have too. 3 rib-eyes, two extra sides, a drink, and coffee for $180+. Alexander's is your typical steakhouse: dim lighting, selective menu, lots of drinks, etc. Our server was friendly and did a good job accommodating our needs, including giving us bread and catering to my sister who is gluten free. I ordered the salmon, which came with a salad and an orzo and rice dish. I ordered my salad without bacon and cheese. It came without bacon, but unfortunately still had cheese on it. I didn't mind too much because I don't have an allergy or anything. Our waiter was quick to bring out our main course after our salads. The orzo and rice was not was I was expecting. It was cold and mixed with raisins, craisins, corn, peppers, and currants. I didn't hate it, but it was different. It reminded me somewhat of a cold Chipotle burrito bowl. The salmon looked great with a beautiful sear on the outside. Unfortunately, the center was raw. The rest of the people in my party all said they enjoyed their food and had no complaints. I will be giving this place 3 stars. Don't get me wrong, the food was phenomenal but everything else about this place was okay and nothing to rave home about. Starting off, we got seated at a table that had no silverware staged which my family and I found odd because every other table around us did. Then, I had ordered a cocktail but was later informed that they were out of ingredients for that one so I ordered a different one. Once I received my cocktail, I noticed it was missing the cherries that were listed on the ingredients. This rubbed me the wrong way as I'd expect a drink I am paying $15 for to have all of the proper garnish and ingredients served to me the first time, rather than having to ask the waitress to correct the issue. After we received our drinks and were waiting for our food, our waitress randomly just gave us each a knife without saying anything and she had placed it all on the bare table without a napkin or anything at all which was disgusting. How do you expect me to use silverware that has touched the bare table without being properly sanitized? Anyway, another waiter was walking by and we asked to get different knives and some napkins and she was confused and said "You guys didn't receive silverware?" She apologized and immediately brought the 4 of us a set of silverware that were neatly wrapped up in a napkin. Everything else went fine during our dinner and like I said earlier, the food was perfect to our liking. Our waitress was always making rounds checking up on us and making sure we were okay as well as keeping up with our refills. We also ordered the swordfish and the steak special. The swordfish was really good and full of flavor. It came with broccoli and mash potatoes. The potatoes were chunky and had very little flavor. The price was $32.00 which was little pricey for the amount received. The steak dish was really good with great presentation. The steak kabobs were on a top of rice pilaf which was season to perfection. The steak special was also $32.00 which seemed high for two steak and veggie kabobs. It is always good to make a reservation prior to arriving because they were super busy on a Friday night. We were seated at the bar which had moderate noise level. The dining experience is always good at the bar. The service was excellent as always. For the price of the food and the portion I would give this location an average score.
