Review on desserts! The key lime pie is outta this world!!! It's a cheesecake texture, rich and smooth with the perfect amount of lime flavor. The crust is unique...graham cracker with something extra. Best key lime pie I've ever had. The carrot cake is also delicious but the key lime takes the cake. read more

One of my husband's favorites! The food is always excellent as is the service. Be careful if you order a mixed drink -- I don't know if the bartenders are hoping to get you sloshed so you will leave bigger tips or they just don't understand how to mix a proper cocktail. Years ago when it was known as Jay Alexanders we often spent date night here. Then it kind of fell off the radar, and now we rediscovered it! So glad we did. Love the way they present martinis which are liberally poured. Salads are outstanding, as is all the food really. Plan on sharing desserts...don't know anyone who polish off the huge chocolate cake that is so rich it could be illegal in 20 states. But oh so worth the calories. Prices are middle of the road. Service is attentive. More upscale than sports bar if you know what I mean. But not fancy smancy. Comfortable and clean. Isn't that what we all want? read more

I am a frequent fan of the food quality and service of J. Alexander's and it's been typically one of the most consistent quality selections no matter where I travel. Tonight was NOT one of those nights however for this restaurant. Our server was excellent first off, however my review is more geared towards the food quality delivered. I was introducing my father-in-law to the wonderful smoked salmon appetizer that I've ordered and enjoyed many times at my local restaurant in Lexington, KY and tonight it was extremely "gamey" and the flavor very sub-par. (I asked the waitress to remove it from the table as it was inedible and she said she would also remove it from our bill). I then ordered the prime rib, which I've now enjoyed in multiple states now over the last few months and the quality of meat and temperature has always been amazingly consistent, unfortunately that was NOT the case tonight. The cut was very thin and it looked of a lower quality of meat than usual. It had less pink coloring and more searing on the sides that I've rarely seen. I mentioned it to the manager and was told that there was nothing wrong with it as they weigh the cut and prepare it as ordered and it was probably more of a wider cut versus the thicker cuts that I've seen elsewhere. I was not offered any other options and basically told that it was no different and that I should be happy with the taste once I eat it. The meat had decent flavor, but it was definitely not anywhere close to the quality I've enjoyed at multiple other J. Alexander restaurants throughout OH, KY, and TN. I certainly would never order this again if this was my first experience eating this dish at JA's. When spending $40 for a slice of prime rib, I'd expect better quality and service to maintain my satisfaction and typical experience with this dish. I didn't want to like J. Alexander's Redlands Grill. As a rule, I try to support local businesses, but circumstances dictated family lunch, so there we were. Our visit started off a little rocky - there were 9 of us, and we were told that their largest table only seated 8. I asked what they would suggest, and we were told we could maybe squeeze, which we did - comfortably. Many of our party are plant-based, and ordered the veggie burger (truly outstanding and inspired), which is accompanied by a generous handful of thin, deliciously crispy fries. The veggie side options were also winners, and included wood-grilled asparagus and spaghetti squash served with marinara - both of which were surprisingly delightful. I would actually give 4 stars (am I going insane?), except for the price. Lunch for two people (just food, no drinks or dessert) after tax and tip came to $32, which is steep for lunch. For that price, we could have eaten equally well if not better somewhere local. Overall though, I was impressed. Strong work, Redlands Grill - keep making those veggies. read more

First time to J.Alexander's and we loved it! Service was excellent. Got a water refill within 30 seconds and soda was refilled without asking several times. Started off with deviled eggs that were delicious. Then we both ordered Filet mignon with bearnaise sauce. I asked for extra because that's my favorite sauce and it was without charging extra. Red wine was excellent. Steaks were cooked exactly how we wanted it, one blue and one medium rare. We know a steakhouse is great when they know what blue means. Great atmosphere as well in the restaurant. Definitely more of an upscale place, so dress accordingly. Will be coming back here in the future. read more

Had dinner last night for first time in long time! Used to love the French Dip but it sure has changed, meat was rare and barely warm some parts were cold, used to have a baguette type bun with a good bite now it's some sort of soft hoagie bun. I am pleased with most visits. This location can be consistent with service and food quality unless something doesn't go well and you have to raise an issue. It's hit or miss depending on who's assisting how the issue is resolved. I visit various locations including Dayton, OH, Cincinnati, OH , and Raleigh, NC. Visited J Alexander's in Centerville Ohio with my wife. She ordered an Alex salad with chicken pasta soup. I ordered a prime rib. I asked the waiter about the size of the prime rib, and was told there was a 16 oz. for $37 and a 12 oz. for $31. I ordered the 12 oz. When the check came, I was charged $37 for the 12 oz. portion. I asked why, and the server said he made a "mistake" and that they had recently changed the pricing for the prime rib. He made no offer to compensate me for the "error". My wife's salad was mostly ice-berg lettuce and romaine, (not field greens as she previously experienced). The bacon in the salad did not look like it was cooked thoroughly. The "special" menu listed a dessert called "powerful stuff", an ice cream serving with caramel and toffee, oreo. No price was indicated on the menu for the ice cream. On our check, we were charged $15 for a serving of ice cream. The serving size of the ice cream as way too large (around 2 pints) for two people. I feel that we were greatly overcharged for the ice cream, and that there should have been some indication on the menu about the serving size and the cost. read more

Came here for my mother laws birthday celebration. Our experience was meh. Unfortunately they were out of or no longer offering most of what we preferred. I love their crab cakes and red fish.. but they only had salmon. I got the seafood boyou pasta. My hubby got the fried chicken with orzo instead of fries. He should have gotten double orzo and no coleslaw. He always says hes ok with coleslaw... then doesnt like it. Ohhh well hes a grown man ...free to keep making the same mistakes lol. My father in law got the salmon... they had to come back to report out of broccoli. My mother in law and I both like the boyou pasta and added on ceasar salad (good but super garlicky). we had both came intending to order crab cakes .. the crab cakes were why we chose this restaurant. So She seemed disappointed and since it was her birthday dinner that was unfortunate. My husband liked his fried chicken and orzo .. my father in law like his salmon. We got 2 desserts.. carrot cake and key lime. The key lime was good but crust too thick and hard. I dont like carrot cake so didnt try it. Next time we will call and verify the fish of the day and also make sure they have crab cakes. read more

Typically, we love having prime rib at this restaurant. So we decided to have prime rib again on Wednesday, Dec 27th and it was horrible! The pieces my husband and I had were basically flavorless and full of fat and sinew. What a disappointment! Our bill came and we noticed charges tacked on for asking for extra salad dressing and cheese on our salads. There has never been an extra charge for these and we have been going here once a month for the past three years ordering the same thing. The waitress was flustered and brought over the manager who, instead, instead of apologizing stated that it was a new policy of the restaurant and we should just expect that if we ask for extra salad dressing, they are going to charge for it! She even doubled down saying that in McDonald's they charge for extra ketchup. I stated that this was not McDonald's and that we were paying $25 for salads. She was extremely rude. There was no mention of an extra charge on the menu for extra salad dressing, nor did the waitress ever mention it when I asked for it. When I called back, they said her name was Tori Blose. We had a wonderful, hot meal at J.Alexander's last night. The food was delicious as always. We have frequented this established restaurant for 40+years and we rarely are disappointed. Our server, Jay, was very personable, funny, and on point with menu suggestions. We appreciate a server who goes the extra mile to check back frequently, but knows not to interrupt and one who loves her job. The restaurant has its own ambiance. You know people come to have dinner, talk, reconnect and enjoy each other's company. I've heard from people that it's too noisy and loud, but for us, it's just nice knowing people are out having a great time! read more

Booked reservations for 5:30 pm Saturday and got seated almost immediately when we arrived. Service was good. Ordered the grilled pork tenderloin with Thai bang bang sauce on the side. It came with smashed potatoes and I ordered a Redlands grill salad. My wife ordered the prime rib with baked potato. I had iced tea and my wife had a soft drink. Both entrees were good sized portions and properly prepared. I was surprised that there was no bread or roll to start. We both enjoyed our meals. The total came to around $75 without tip. The restaurant is pretty dark and seemed noisy. Not surprising for a Saturday evening with a pretty full house. There seemed to be sufficient staffing overall. This is not our go to restaurant due to the cost but for an occasional visit we will go back again. read more

Although everything turned out okay my visit could have ended with a visit to the hospital. After repeatedly being told of a food allergy I was still served food that included the allergen. I lived in the area over twenty years ago and now live in Texas. I was in town for a death, drove by, recognized the place and went in for nostalgic memories. Came here on a whim, after our first choice was a 2 hour wait. Our service was great, our food came out perfectly. Our waitress even knew of some kids item that weren't on the grill they my kids were able to order. Only thing I didn't enjoy would be my broccoli, it was just very over seasoned. My boyfriend got the southern salad, and fish tacos, and enjoyed everything. I got a filet with mashed potatoes and broccoli. I also got the Redlands side salad, I was so impressed. It's been awhile since we've dined here-prior to Covid. Unfortunately, it's not as good as my memories. Service was subpar and was the greatest disappointment. No offering of water, no suggestion of horseradish, no to go container for the au jus. The soda refill was late as well as the meal check in after being served. Having been a server, I do expect servers have some intuition of needs throughout the meal. The table next to us had a missing appetizer and another table had to be moved because no one waited on them timely after being seated. Lastly, what happened to the delicious rolls served with the salad? It appears the best way to eat here now is with a "to go" order. They were set up quite nicely for that.
