What a great place. As I was strolling by one Saturday afternoon their happy hour sign caught my attention. It was happy hour on a Saturday ?!? That's pretty unheard of and amazing. Soon after I was greeted and seated at the bar. The happy hour menu was placed on the bar top for easy access. The menu included food and a variety of drinks. I was totally surprised when I asked which beers were included in happy hour and the response was all of these, as the bartender pointed to the row of taps. That's pretty unheard of, it's usually two or three different beers but the whole tap selection was totally surprising to hear. The food arrived soon. It was tasty and portions were good. The rolls were good and the stuffed jalapeños were great. The beer was cold. The selection was outstanding and the service was very friendly. *SPEAKEASY REVIEW ONLY* I had loved my experience here at Kagé, a hidden speakeasy located right inside Tabu Sushi Bar & Grill. Simply hidden from plain sight, nor is there a dedicated page to it, Kagé truly is breathtaking. You can park on the street or in the parking structure in Old Town Temecula. For a Saturday evening, the restaurant is bustling with business. We were able to get into the speakeasy easily, and there were numerous seats. I can attest to coming early because by the night, there isn't room to walk or a place to sit. My sister, my fiancé, and I spent a few hours in here. We all tried different cocktails and enjoyed the ambiance. It looked like the pictures you see of Tokyo streets with neon lights hung all around. There is a corner with Tokyo magazines, too. The cocktail menu also was impressive with their array of drinks. I was able to try their kaigun with a beautiful black sesame color. It was quite a sweet drink. To be adventurous, I tried their loud mouth soup - and oh my goodness. That was memorable. It tasted exactly like Asian soup that's left in the fridge with a cute, crisp wonton on top for decoration. You can see the scallions and chili oil atop of the drink, too. I loved it for its uniqueness, but definitely an acquired taste. Fantastic unique menu. This speakeasy is fantastic. Would def return for value and good food and drink options. Now for the food. Soups: Miiso and Beef Broth. Disappointing. Lukewarm. Beef broth tasted like beef bouillon cube watered down while miso was okay. Sushi was a solid 4. Yummy flavor profiles on point and yummy for the Avatar Roll and Oh Boy. Hubs had the Salmon Skin roll that was light on the skin and heavy on the meat, just not what's served in traditional Japanese fashion. So to sum things up- I would not recommend for a special night out, skip the soup, find a sushi roll that speaks to you, get a beer on tap if that suits you and try out the happy hour. But here's what quite frankly is a big point of contention. KRAB. You will not find crab in anything here. Boo. This was the second time we came here. The first time we came strictly for the speak easy. That ended up not happening. There was a 2 hour wait. THIS time, we put our name on the list prior to eating and were told to inform them 20 minutes before we were done eating and they would let us in. Long story short, that was not the case again. Told us it Would be a 30 minute wait. Total of 50 minutes. I won't be going back for the speakeasy again. Came in on a Saturday night and got seated immediately. All the staff were super attentive and so nice! The restaurant is very modern and clean, they have comfortable dining chairs, indoor and outdoor seating available. The food was good. Everything was tasty- the miso soup, the habibi roll, the short ribs (very sweet like Korean BBQ), hibachi, salad (loved the dressing), California roll! The edamame was undercooked so it made it harder to slip the soybeans out. Our server also forgot to put in one of our sushi rolls and when we asked for it, told us the kitchen was closed already so we said it was ok and to disregard. I do see other reviews stating the same so I hope management takes notice . And the little secret here was AWESOME! The Tokyo style lights + good drinks + amazing bartenders make the atmosphere such a comfortable and welcoming experience. I will definitely be returning! Our server was nice but unfortunately, a few things we ordered never got submitted to the kitchen and we had to keep asking for hot sauce multiple times before we finally got it. We got there during Happy Hour and started with the Pink Panther drink (5/5) and Spicy Edamame (4/5). I tried my friend's vegan ramen and thought it tasted really good. I ordered the Chef's Nigiri Sampler (4/5). After eating, we went into their speakeasy, Kage. It's Tokyo themed and so cute! We sat at the bar and received really good service from the bartender. Uh. Wow... just wow at the innovation and deliciousness of the cocktails at their Speakeasy bar! Service was great from the hostess to the bartenders/mixologists - special shout out to Nick, our mixologist who was also the creator of the cocktail Kaigun, using black sesame (never had this in a cocktail)... it was SO GOOD! In fact, all four cocktails we ordered were beyond solid. The decor is so fun, really brought us back to our memories of Japan :) I'm looking forward to more visits to Tabu asap!! read more

Came here with 2 friends on a Saturday afternoon. Its very convenient, right in Old Town Temecula. Parking - we parked at the parking garage and walked around and my friends decided they were hungry and wanted to check out this spot. One guy ordered the ramen - and got really sick later that day, and we weren't sure if the ramen may have caused that, since I don't believe he even had any sushi. My other guy friend ordered the 4x4 sushi platter, and I got to try one of each. It was pretty good sushi. This spot is more on the expensive side, but its for the ambiance of the restaurant. Its nice and fancy - but lacks attention to details. Restrooms weren't nice. Service - no complaints, but nothing exactly memorable, which is both a good and bad thing. This place is nice out of convenience if you're in Old Town (although I wouldn't mind driving a little to a nicer and cheaper spot), but its not likely for me to go out of my way to refer my friends to come back here. read more

Our server beau was absolutely great! He had an awesome personality and great customer service. This new sushi spot actually surprised me! The fish was really good and fresh! We tried the hot Cheeto sushi roll which was better than I expected if you like hot Cheetos you have to try it! Kage, the speakeasy, had some very yummy drinks. We had 6 but I can only recall the names of 3 (sannuro, dark roast of the soul, and cinnamon blackberry sour). My husband ordered the sannuro twice and he had an off the menu old fashioned type drink that was delicious. I had 2 off the menu drinks and the cinnamon blackberry sour was by far my favorite. Service inside was great. I did feel like the girl sitting us in the bar was a bit lost. Once we got sat, she came in everytime someone arrived and asked the bartender where they should sit, its just a bit distracting in such a small room and really didnt seem like a conversation that even needed to occur. Sushi - it was good but not great. I feel like the roll lacked texture and were sauce heavy. Service was good. Both charge a $4 card fee, which seems like they can get that cost covered in another way but I guess at least it tells you what it is on the bill. My husband and I came to the speakeasy around 5pm on a Friday evening. We were worried there wouldn't be any spots available but fortunately they sat us at a great spot at the bar within a few minutes. Nick the bartender was so kind and helped us decide which cocktails we would enjoy best. He was super knowledgeable and everyone else working was on their game! We had been to the space before when it was the "Apparition Room" and loved the ambiance and service. The revamping with the Japanese inspired drinks and aesthetic is so awesome. While the space is the same, the remodel, decor and new use of the room makes it seem so much more open. We are already planning our next visit. read more

(3/5) This was our first visit to Kage Speakeasy and Tabu Sushi & Grill. We ended up having a great evening, but it started with a lot of unnecessary confusion. First, the positives. Kage is absolutely beautiful. The Japanese-inspired décor, lanterns, neon lighting, and overall atmosphere really set the tone. It has a unique vibe that feels intimate, stylish, and thoughtfully designed. The bartenders were fantastic, knowledgeable, attentive, and their cocktail recommendations were excellent. The drinks were beautifully presented, and once we were seated at Tobu, our server was just as wonderful. The food and service were great. Unfortunately, our experience with the host was disappointing. We were told the wait for Tabu would be about 20 minutes, and when we asked if we could wait inside Kage with a drink, the host told us yes. Since it was our first visit, we naturally assumed we had been added to the restaurant's waitlist. About 45 minutes later, we found out our name had never been added because Kage and Tabu have separate hosts. That was never explained to us, even though we had the conversation right in front of both hosts. A simple explanation or quick handoff could have prevented the entire misunderstanding. What bothered me most wasn't the mistake, it was the lack of communication afterward. There was no acknowledgment or apology for the confusion. I also asked the same host where the restroom was since it was my first visit. She replied, "At the restroom," while vaguely pointing toward herself. Because we were inside an enclosed speakeasy, I had no way of knowing the restrooms were actually outside the speakeasy, inside the restaurant near the bar area. I ended up wandering around until I eventually found them. Thankfully, one of the bartenders stepped in to help, even though it wasn't responsibility. He checked with the restaurant staff, and shortly afterward we were finally seated. Although we had originally requested a table, we were seated at the sushi bar instead. By then, we were simply happy to finally eat and didn't want to make a bigger issue out of it. We appreciated that someone took the initiative to help us after all the confusion. Once we were seated, everything changed. Our server was attentive, friendly, and made sure we enjoyed our meal. The food, drinks, bartenders, and restaurant staff were all excellent and truly turned the evening around. As first-time guests, we were simply trying to enjoy a night out together, and a little communication and hospitality at the beginning would've made all the difference. I'd absolutely come back for the atmosphere, drinks, food, and the outstanding bartenders and restaurant staff. My only suggestion is that management improve communication between the hosts and restaurant team. Kage and Tabu have everything they need to be a five-star experience it just needs to start with the same level of hospitality at the front door as it does throughout the rest of the experience. read more

Very disappointing experience. The service was extremely slow, and we couldn't even find our server most of the time. We got sat by the door which I noticed got neglected because its more separated from the main dining area. Our appetizer didn't come out until after we had already finished our rolls. The chicken fried rice bowl tasted burnt, had almost no seasoning, and wasn't even like fried rice at all. We also noticed another family sending food and drinks back, so it didn't seem like we were the only ones having issues. The restaurant also adds a 3% fee to "offset rising costs". The water had a strong tap water taste, and the beer was flat. We weren't served water with our meal until we asked. Slow service, extra fee, and poor food quality made for a disappointing visit. As is the case for many, we wanted to visit KAGE and it was expected 45m wait. So we tried Tabu. Menu seemed fairly wide with lotsa options. Cant explain the overuse of cream cheese in there offering, which is not standard fare for sushi with the exception of 1-2 american rolls and was a deterrant for many choices. Maybe a local thing. We had a roll and 2 soups for lite snack. Our friends had ramen and a roll. Not bad, but not great either. Rolls were over sauced a bit but edible. Service was excellent. They have a sc for cc use of 3% which i find in today's world out if touch with today's dining consumer. I can see a mom and pop place doing that but felt this is a lazy effort to manage their expense. Not sure if would go back unless there wasn't other options and even that may not be enough.
