There is only one thing that can satisfy one's hankering for french onion soup. A large ceramic pot filled with rich broth, soft onions, and cheesy croutons. After walking past the skeleton of Kilpatrick's that once held my favorite french onion soup, I could only hope that the Ithaca Ale house 6 onion soup would live up to my expectations. We were sat promptly and ordered a side caesar salad, wings with garbage sauce, and, of course, the 6 onion soup. The caesar salad was mediocre, but its possible that I would order it again to add some crunch to a meal. The wings were quite good and the "garbage sauce" (all of the sauces mixed together) was a surprising hit! And finally, the six onion soup. One spoonful into this soup and I knew they were doing it right. The broth was rich and dark, the onions were soft and jammy, and there was no lack of broiled cheese. Not as great as we hoped. The leather bench seats in the booths are so old that they are cracked and peeling. Had to sit on our napkin because it hurt our legs since we had shorts on. The seating by the windows has the sun coming in in the evening and no shades or curtains so you're blinded and overheating through your meal. Took the family to eat here while we were visiting the area camping at Robert Treeman state park. This place was great! Right in the down town area close to all the other shops and happenings. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about their selection of brews. Taking the kids I was a little concerned about the lack of kids items on the menu, but the waiter gave us the "hidden" kids menu items once she took our drink orders. It can be difficult to find a good late night spot so my boyfriend and I were pleasantly surprised to find this place is open until 1 am Thurs - Sat. We arrived around 8:30 pm for a late dinner and found they weren't too busy but more people were arriving around the same time as us. I started with an old fashion which was amazing btw. For the price and how much is served, I ordered two. It's one of the best I've had so far out of the downtown Ithaca restaurants. For dinner, we shared the winter harvest salad as an appetizer which was delicious. For our entrees, we got the hot honey pizza and fish and chips with their sidewinder fries. The pizza wasn't bad and wish there was more of a wood fire crust. The fish and chips was a huge serving and I found the fries to be too thick for my liking. The vibe inside is a little odd--kind of dark and not the coziest atmosphere--but we gave it a shot for a casual meal. We ordered the French onion soup, nachos, and a couple of sandwiches. The soup was definitely the standout--rich, cheesy, and super satisfying. I'd come back just for that. The nachos, on the other hand, were a miss. We went for a last minute anniversary dinner Sunday June 29th. Ordered drinks from our server Magnolia. 10 minutes later, another server came to tall us she was busy and he would get us started with drinks. We said we ordered them already so he went to look. He came back with them pretty quickly and we placed our food order. Our fries we wanted for an app came out within 10 minutes. So far, not a bad experience. They were clearly busy and we were fine chilling. We proceeded to wait for 55 minutes for food. The entire time, Magnolia walked by us and clearly was avoiding eye contact. She never once stopped to update us or anything. Again, we saw they were busy and we were enjoying chatting so we patiently waited it out. When she brought the food, she only brought my partners burger. She said my salad was ready but they were waiting on the chicken. I said just cancel it as there was no idea how long it would take. The sure and turf burger was cold and clearly had been sitting there forever. $24 for an awful burger. I did get a complimentary $6 beer. There's a way to handle long wait times and a busy night, this was not it. Magnolia need some training on customer service. Been going to the Ale house since they opened almost 20 years ago and seen plenty of super busy nights with long wait times. this was the worst experience ever. As much as we could with my son having no interest in anything but playing with a toy he got from down the block, which of course he broke and then had to harass us as we tried to eat :P not their fault though. First restaurant I stopped at in my trip to Ithica. This spot has a nice inside & outside venue. Outside was dog friendly & servers were bringing water cups out for the pups. The beer options were plentiful and the few I had were 3.5+ out of 5 stars. Service was timely and everyone was polite. My family and I stopped by for lunch after touring the Cornell campus. They were pretty busy for a weekday but the workers were on it. Only thing that bummed us out was the mishap of seating - we asked for a table inside and got a wait time of 20 min. 30 min later and after 2 parties that came after us got seated, she said she heard we wanted a table outside. We ended up waiting another 10 min for a table to clear up so we waited a total of 45 min for a table. I got the Bacon Jam burger with fries and wow it was really good! I've never had bacon jam before and it was salty and a little sweet. It's definitely a messy burger but it was so so good. I wouldn't recommend ordering for delivery, as the food took longer than expected and arrived cold (everything had to be reheated). Also, the pulled pork sliders in my recent delivery order were surprisingly lacking in flavor... and the reuben spring rolls (egg rolls?) arrived with some soggy bits (from sitting in oil in the delivery box?). If you're comfortable with it and able to dine-in, you'll find there's a solid beer selection and some enjoyable pub-style food. There's usually a wait for a seat as well, so plan accordingly. Our S-I-L is non-abledbody and is in a wheelchair. He has a service dog and when we entered the establishment we're immediately told dogs are not allowed. When he tried to explain to the hostess that ADA laws allow service dogs in restaurants, she said "well I'm Sorry but we don't allow dogs" . His service dog clearly had her service dog vest on which clearly showed that she is a service dog. Our S-I-L asked to speak to the manager who finally allowed "Rosie" to enter the establishment. Ate hear recently prior to a show at the state theater. We were able to beat the crowd and got a spot at the bar. The service even though busy was very good. My husband and I both got burgers. They were both so tasty and filling. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the burgers or food on the menu. They do not take reservations, but there is a big bar area so many people were just ordering drinks and hanging out before their table is ready. They even have this fun bleacher seating near the front window in the bar area. Many TVs around that likely make it popular during big sporting events.
