I came here with friends and overall I really enjoyed the experience. The fries were very crispy and burger was quite tasty. The service staff were extremely kind and we're very efficient. My one issue with this restaurant was the straw usage. I stopped using plastic straws a long time ago, but sometimes I can't avoid them. I believe it would be best for The Ale House to ask before they put straws in people's drinks. It would be nice to see some more eco-friendly establishments especially in a beautiful location like Ithaca. All in all, I recommend this spot, I'm just slightly disappointed that they are wasting so much plastic. read more

My son and I were in town over the summer. I had not been in Ithaca since 1991. Went to IC between 81 and 85. The wait time for a table was lengthy. We sat at the bar. Good beers on tap. I no longer remember what we had but they were tasty and cold. Some excellent wings to start. Some of the best we have had. Then a cheesesteak for my son and a burger for me. Alas, my burger was not cooked to my liking but the cheesesteak was a big hit with my son. Really, really good. You might ask, why didn't send the burger back. Easy, by the time my food would come back, my son would be done. That's no good in my book. I simply wish when a rare burger is ordered, the cooking temp would be honored. Not a lot to ask for. Overall pretty good experience, food was good, service okay. Came here to celebrate my daughters birthday with family and some friends. We weren't a huge party but service was very slow. Most amazing Greek salad I've ever had. "Greek ish" they call it. Perfect amount of dressing on it. Chick peas. Not a lot of cheese. Didn't even need the cheese. Can't make a review on the food because we were just at the restaurant with a reservation and all, yet were waiting 30 minutes without even a hello from any server. I went and informed the host and they said they were very sorry and would find our server, then we waited another 7 minutes longer with still no sign of anyone. We got up and left without so much as a hello from anyone. No one even stopped us on the way out. It was not like we were expecting the world. Just water and someone to take our order. Do yourself a favor, choose one of the many other establishments right on the same road like we did. We were seated and attended to within 10 minutes. Beer selection is okay, they have some local beers on draft that were good. The food is average, we tried the onion soup, the hot honey pizza, and the hummus. All were fine, but not super fresh or great quality. The hostess is pretty terrible at her job, we came twice and asked to be seated outside both times, and both times she gave us a hard time about it (eg. saying we shouldn't sit outside because it was raining even though the tables are completely covered) before eventually agreeing to seat us outside. Food was delicious. The hostess, an older woman, seemed deeply perturbed when we arrived, as she had to be bothered to put down her phone and seat us. She exuded a miserable energy right from the start, like she really didn't want to be working there. Either that or she really wanted to make sure the customers did NOT feel welcome. Then, we were seated somewhere right next to a service cart, which meant waitstaff had to stand over us the whole evening - whenever they needed access to the cart. We asked to move somewhere less in the way when we were first seated but we we're denied. That's fine if there's no room anywhere else. It wouldn't have been a big deal at all if the damn hostess had simply been slightly nicer about it. I think this place should hire someone who wants to work there, because the hostess who was seating people tonight genuinely does not. Ambiance is a little cold. It no longer feels like it has the "ale house" bar vibe that the old location had. But that's neither here nor there. We found this place through Yelp and decided to try it out for dinner. We waited about 5 minutes before we were seated as it was almost packed by 5:30 pm. People tend to eat/drink early here. We sat near the back across from a semi-open kitchen which is always nice to see. The washroom was not ideal as one has to wait since they only have one for each gender. I got a crab cake salad since I LOVE crab cakes. It came with four which I think 5 crab cakes would have been better - for the price of the dish. Salad dressing was on the side which was nice. The greens were fresh, not wilted at all. The crab cakes could have been hotter. It was left to sit out. My partner had a "sexy" burger which he devoured. The patty was thick, juicy and flavourful. He had a salad on the side. Presentation could have been better here. Overall, a good experience to end our night in Ithaca. Go for their waterfalls!! read more

Made a trip to ithaca this week and stopped by here for some beers and burgers! The inside was pretty packed, and so we opted for outdoor seating. Everything about the experience was pretty good except for the fact that there were no heat lamps so it got pretty chilly Luckily some beers, burgers, and soup helped to keep us warm! The 6 onion soup ($6) was probably the highlight of the meal! the soup was hot, sweet, and savory. there was a super distinct onion taste, and the provolone + swiss cheese on top was to die for! made for the craziest cheese pulls I also had the "perfect" burger ($16). I did not expect to find a damn good burger in ithaca, but surprises like this are always welcome! the beef was cooked to order - i got rare which came out a bit medium rare, but the patty was still super soft and juicy while having a proper burger patty bite to it. the toppings were fresh and the brioche bun gave the burger an extra oomph! this was a GIGANTIC burger by the way, so very much worth the price! read more

We dined in here in October while visiting Ithaca for a mini vaca. They followed the COVID-19 precautions well and we felt safe here. I went with the onion soup for an appetizer- it was very delicious and I loved that it came with a bonus onion on top (in the form of a delicious onion ring- yum)! I am normally not a burger person, but this spot seemed like a good burger joint so I knew I had to try one. I went with the bacon jam burger which came with gooey brie on top. Arrived at 8:30 on a Saturday night in late March. No wait, plenty of tables, but it took the hostess a full 3-4 minutes to acknowledge us, as she was taking a carryout order and then painstakingly entering it- and had to call for help to do that. No hello, no we'll be right with you. When she finally got around to it, she grabbed three menus and sat us in a booth. 2, 4, 6, 8 minutes passed as the (presumable) server for the section walked passed our table 11 times while affably waiting on those around us. He looked directly at our neat pile of menus at the end of the table several times while serving others and after 12 minutes and my family peeking out of the booth into the aisle, came over and greeted us: "I take it no one has taken care of you all?" Ya think?? We finally ordered. He delivered the drinks. Delivered the food. (We still had no silverware.) Never once stopped back to refill or see how things were. Tasteless, lackluster food and horrible service. I'm giving the one star because I have to, and at least we didn't get sick. read more

The Ithaca Ale House is a family fave, so it was the perfect spot to celebrate my mother's birthday after hitting a movie at Cinemapolis (another fabulous local favorite). It was a downright pleasure to walk into the warm, bustling interior of the Ale House on a particularly damp and chilly day, and we were quickly greeted by the host. As a rule, you should pretty much always expect a rather cramped wait at the Ale House before a table is ready. If I were on my own or with friends, I would wait at the large bar and order a drink. Happily, we were told there would be a 30 minute wait that ended up being much closer to a quick 10 minutes. As a rule, I am cautious of flatbreads simply because it's a dish I could rustle up on my own if I was so inclined. However, the Margherita flatbread at the Ale House is so flavorful, with such a perfectly done crust and appropriate portion size that I couldn't resist. Worth it! As good as the flatbread was, my brother's Blackened Chicken Cajun Pasta had me envious. I definitely swiped a bite or two or three. It was creamy and comforting, and had a surprising and welcome spicy kick to cut the richness. Delishhh. My brother also noted that he was happy with the unexpectedly large portion size, as well as the quality of the garlic bread (made with real garlic, as he was sure to mention). The Ale House is a consistently good choice, as long as you leave room at the beginning for a bit of a wait for a table. Just the price you pay for a local favorite. read more
