Whelp, this place was delicious! Cody and I were in U District area Friday night and looking for somewhere to eat. Cody came up with this place via Yelp, and I am always down to try new places! He told me the cuisine it was listed under, Korean Japanese Hawaiian, and it intrigued me! We found parking easily on the street, and it located right across from Safeway! We ordered: - Kalbi Short Rib full size $20 (comes with 2 sides, I got rice and salad) - Katsu Gyoza Special $11 (2 sides French Fries and miso soup) - takoyaki Well this place has everything I love! The teriyaki chicken was amazing, so did the brown rice. For some reason, their brown rice was soft and tasty, unlike other places where the brown rice tend to be dry. Not overly busy (at least when we visited on a hot Saturday). Relaxing tunes in the background. Service: be seated and a server will take your order. Sides come out first. Entrees come shortly after. Check brought to table. Half Order Chicken Katsu: oh man! SO glad I got the half order. The proportions are HUGE! The server said the the chicken Katsu entree is usually shared between two people. I'm glad I got the half order--I could barely finish it! The chicken was slightly chewy but there was more meat than breading which is a plus. French Fries: lightly salted and sprinkled with nori flakes. Soft on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside. I like the fact that they are not overly grease-soaked. They come piping hot! The bowl may look small but trust me, you need to share in order to have room for the other part of your meal. Loco Moco: the burger is so tender and juicy! Nice flavor and not too salty. Eggs are super soft and runny--mix them in with the gravy and rice! Miso Soup: slightly watered down in flavor compared to most places. Green onions were fresh and crisp at least. Side Salad: consists of carrots and ice burg lettuce. The lettuce was room temperature so it wasn't as "refreshingly crisp" as I had anticipated. The dressing has a nice sweetness and a tang to it. I really like this place after trying there food for the first time. They are a mix Asian fusion cuisine. I came here on a weekday afternoon. The time was just right not busy at all. You can get the food within 15 minutes. The server was really friendly, give us a lot of advice on what there specialty are on the menu. At the end I decided to order beef friend with a side of Miso soup. I was craving for fried rice that day so I have to order it. The food came out less then 10 minutes, hot and fresh. The beef fried rice I ordered was pretty decent, but the one my friend ordered was the "mochicksa chicken". OMG!!! I fell in love with it when his dish was brought out. It was a huge portion too. After I give try, it was so good I actually regret not getting that. Overall I give this place a 5 because the service was friendly, the food is great, and also the prices is just right for the college students budgets. A guy comes to our table and introduces himself and I introduce myself as a fellow Yelper who loves good food and trying new places! I told him to be expecting a review from me in a bit after I leave haha. He confidently says he is the owner and tells me to choose any item off the Appetizer menu and says it is 'on the house'! I was like aww, thank you so much! But that's not where it ends. After all, he is the owner right? He created the menu and food himself so I throw him a curveball and ask him to surprise us with something rather than me choosing. This place looks a little divey, but they have great food and pretty decent service. We came here for dinner and were seated right away. I ordered the katsu curry special (which also came with a side of fries!) and he ordered the bulgogi. They were both huge! It was like a whole pan of meat for the bulgogi, and a little tub of rice. Plus there was soup. The katsu curry was a huge plate of rice with the biggest piece of katsu I've ever seen. I would have liked to have more curry sauce with the meal, but it was still very tasty. The fries were super crispy and I wish it came with curry sauce to dip instead of ketchup, but anyway...! The staff were super friendly and we were checked on regularly. I live near the university district and today was my first time trying their food. I came here because of all the great reviews. :) I placed a take out order on the phone. The girl who answered was a little short, but acceptable customer service. When I arrived, it was more of a quick transaction. No hello, just here's your food. When does that ever happen? My server was so nice and happy to serve customers. She put on genuine smile throughout the whole time. I see other reviews rave about spicy bulgogi and I decided to order it this time. I was afraid it would be too spicy but it turned out to be not super spicy. I like spicy food but not super hot/spicy so it was just right for me. It may not be spicy enough or other people who want extra spicy dish though, I am afraid. One thing I would suggest is to add a small or medium plate to each customer while serving food. I ordered the white rice but I found the bowl a little too awkward to eat it in. So maybe serve the rice in a plate rather than a bowl? I don't know. Again just a personal preference. My only "complaint" is that there was way too much meat and not enough veggies other than onions. You have the option for a salad but I always choose other side dishes. I wish the dish itself could be a little more balanced but nothing really to complain here. I will definitely return. I've only gotten takeouts so I can't comment much. The portion is huge though, enough for two meals and the sides are also generous. I don't think it gets too busy. And a menu, unless redactions or conditions are listed on it, means all items are available for consumption at the time of the visit. Today, I walked away from one of my favorite Hawaiian/Japanese/Korean/Chinese restaurants in the U-District - Itadakimasu. It was after numerous instances of degrading customer service. Pro: Inexpensive, bountiful portions, a diverse menu of both Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, and Asian menu items, a full bar featuring cocktails and local and international beer. Cons. Inept servers, pre-cooked Chicken teriyaki, slow service based on menu item ordered, the unprepared kitchen staff at the opening, overall poor attention to customer needs. Example No. 1. As a regular, I stopped in and ordered the Musubi paying careful attention to asking that it be delivered before my meal. After waiting for around 12 minutes, both my Musubi and order arrived at the same time. Upon letting them know I had specifically asked for the Musubi before my meal they protested and indicated the Musubi is made to order and the kitchen didn't pay attention to the order beyond the items. I protested but ended up paying for the Musubi. Overall, the meal was as always great while the customer service refused to take ownership of their mistake. Example No. 2. During another visit, I stopped in and was prepared to order a half order of chicken breast teriyaki. Initially, I was seated, before the server returned to the POS (point of sale) station and proceeded to answer and record an order, followed by losing themselves in their phone. After around 10 minutes of patiently waiting, it wasn't until new customers arrived that I received service. Worse still my order ended up appearing after the newly arrived customers' (who ordered regular Chicken Teriyaki). Example No. 3. Today, after walking through the door, paying careful attention both the time and the Open sign turned on, walked in and grabbed a menu before telling the server my order - a Chicken Breast Teriyaki half order. The server returned shortly after taking a two-top's order, that despite being open their grill wasn't ready for a chicken breast order. Let me be clear, they did not offer any alternative or inform me of the wait. They just stood there, apologetic but offered no reassurance. Needless to say, I'm probably not going back for a while. To be clear, the majority of my experiences have been mostly good. The teriyaki tastes fresh (albeit on occasion burnt around the edges), the Mochiko is solid, and the option to sub brown rice is great. But lately, the quality of service has been horrible associated with everything from food arriving separately to this latest setback (associated with a poorly-prepared kitchen). Also, let me reiterate that this restaurant has some of the best cost to quantity ratios of any Japanese teriyaki restaurant in the U-District. In fact, on average you receive around 13 ounces of chicken. 13! But I'm no longer interested because the servers lack initiative or interest in providing a consistent experience with each visit. In conclusion, if you want huge portions, for a low price, but are willing to deal with a laundry list of customer service faux pas; then this is your place. As for me, I'm going to stick to somewhere else that I have continued respect for and will instead return in a few months to see if things improve. Your individual experience may vary. read more

This review is for the teriyaki only. Id say this place is pretty average in terms of teriyaki. I got a chicken and beef combo with a side of salad. I think the flavor of teriyaki here is standard, it doesn't really stand out to me in anyway. I'm usually a huge beef eater, however I preferred the chicken this time because the beef was actually kind of tough. The marinade was still good, but the texture of the beef ruins it. The side salad would have been a good addition to the meal, but my salad didn't come with a little dressing cup. My friends all had salad dressing with theres so it was a bit of a bummer, but I can attest the salad with dressing is quite refreshing. Awesome spot in the U District that is perfect for after work snacks and beer with friends. And when I say snacks, I mean some serious food! Itadakimasu has a huge selection of food with super generous portions. My friend and I came on a Friday evening for "chicken and beer", aka mochiko chicken and Asahi. We each got a pint of Asahi, which was super refreshing as per usual, and a meal portion of mochiko chicken to share between the two of us. PLUS a plate of veggie tempura, and a side of fries and a side of salad. Technically, that is just one meal and a side, but shared between two people it makes for two VERY full bellies at the end. The chicken here is delicious, and so is the tempura. Service is not the fastest I've ever had but given how busy the place was and how they only had two people running the front of the house, I think they did a pretty good job. Warning: huge portion! Most of the time when you get a massive portion of food, it's always a mountain of rice, right? This place has a perfect balance of rice and chicken. In fact, a pile of grill chicken cascades down the football-shaped rice. Most teriyaki places will charge you $0.50-$1 more for brown rice. Same with 'making your teriyaki spicy'. Not this place. I had chicken teriyaki. For $10, you could choose if you want white or brown rice, original or spicy, and salad or miso soup. Some may think why pay $10 for a teriyaki? Thick, juicy cuts of chicken...that's why. There was so much food that I could only finished 1/3 of the portion. Had plenty of leftover, so in a sense, I only paid $3.33 for that meal? :D The food was super fast too.
