I was here as part of a challenge to fine the best crab rangoon in Rhode Island. The Islander and Han Palace were the two that people were most passionate about. My first trip was to Islander The inside of the Islander is gorgeous, ornate decorations tastefully spaced to create texture and visual appeal. The mother and daughter duo who served us were long time employees of the business. I was told that they had three generations of their family work as front of house staff there. Most of the employees were there for the long haul, a sign if thoughtful and caring ownership. A foreshadowing to when I met the owner later. We ordered the crab rangoon and our server mentioned she would send out a scallion pancake and some salt and pepper spicy wings for us to try. We didn't have to wait too long for the food to arrive. The appetizers all looked beautiful and we couldn't wait to try them. The rangoon were delicious. Creamy, a nice proportion of kani with a hint of onion in the background. What I really liked about them was the purse shape. The fried edges had the kind of crispiness that shattered when you bit into it. The scallion pancakes were flaky and tasty. The wings were a good kind of heat, some spice but it never overwhelmed. The banana peppers added a little acidity that took it over the top. And when we thought that was all, two more dishes came out! The Islander fried rice and the Peking Beef. Both were great but my favorite of the two was the beef. The beef was so tender, the sauce was savory, meaty and loaded with veggies like baby bok choy, snow peas and baby corn. At this point, Simon the owner came by and spoke to our table. I had so many questions for him and he was kind enough to answer all of them. I couldn't thank him enough for his kindness and generosity. He was genuinely so sweet. He even sent us home with another order of rangoon and the house wings. I hadn't been to many restaurants in this part of Warwick but I highly recommend you make the trip to come and dine here. While I was living in Rhode Island, I really took for granted how good the Chinese food was there; especially after moving to South Florida. Islander has been at this location for many, many years. I've always enjoyed their food. It's a spacious Chinese restaurant with good service. I was there recently with friends for dinner. I started off with the single size scorpion bowl; it was strong and delicious. We shared crab rangoons, which were up there with one of my favorites; it was 5 stars alone. For my meal, I had the appetizer combo which comes with boneless spare ribs, Islander wings, teriyaki, and pork fried rice. My favorites were the Islander wings, it was in a sticky dark sauce that was sweet and the wings were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The space ribs were decent and my least favorite were the teriyaki sticks; it lacked some flavor. Overall, food, drinks, and ambiance, I would give them 4.5 stars total. read more

I wanted to take a moment and write about my experience this past Saturday the 3rd of January. I helped my friend coordinate his wife's 60 th birthday party. First, I will start with the food was delicious!!!!! They allowed us to come in when they opened to decorate with no problem at all!!! Our wait staff Jordan went above and beyond!!!!! There were 50 plus people and she took care of us like a champion! She was so kind and attentive it was a pleasure to work with her! I would really recommend this restaurant to host an event!!! Food is consistent - beware, they charge and don't tell the customer a percentage if you use a credit card - they get away with it as they NEVER EVER provide an itemized bill on take-out. When I asked after I had paid " Do you charge a fee for the use of a credit card and she said Yes - I asked is there a reason you didn't mention it to me when I paid ( I had cash if that was the case ) her response was "I don't know ( with a shrug of her shoulders ) - I sadly will never be back - great food or not, deception loses my business. My very favorite restaurant in RI. I have cravings for the Wor Hep Har all the time. It is shrimp wrapped in bacon, fried with a sweet and spicy red sauce over lettuce with white rice. It is addicting. Hubby had shrimp chow Mein combo. Drinks are wonderful here, all the great Polynesian cocktails and more. Large menu. Good, friendly service. Nice tropical decor. read more

The ambience inside is casual. I would of liked a little bit of background music but there was a crowd so that noise was good. The crab Rangoons were a bit different tasting. They were more savory than I am use to. The Wonton soup was served hot and was delicious. The Garlic sauce was a bit sweet but overall the food was good. I'm not sure how I feel about the seating inside. It could definitely be improved. However it's not packed constantly from lack of comfortable seating. They're doing something right. The teriyaki beef is absolutely horrendous though. That's highly disappointing since it's a must have at Chinese restaurants. Crab Rangoon is ok. Rice is ok. Love the lo mein though. This is my favorite place to get lo mein. Honestly if it wasn't for the lo mein, I wouldn't even come here. The food here is good and you can tell that the quality of the food is much higher than your average Chinese takeout restaurant. So while I appreciate that, it's worth noting that if you order delivery on a Friday or Saturday, you are going to wait WELL over an hour probably close to two hours which is absurd. read more

The price's have gone up and the portions are getting very smaller the pork lo mein. The pork is tough. The lo mein noodles aren't cooked enough and the pork fried rice is tasteless. The pork in it is tough very chewy and tasteless. The boneless ribs are at least 50% fat. I will not go there again. Hopefully you don't.this place is horrible. I don't understand the local hype for this place. This is some of the worst Chinese-American food I've ever had. The lo mein is cooked in this weird brown sauce, but dry af at the same time. All of the breading for the shrimp & chicken has zero flavor. Meat quality is a solid 4/10. The crab Rangoons were the only edible part of my meal, but they where on the sweeter side. Honestly Islander used to be THE SPOT for Chinese food but for the last year at least everytime I order, something is old and disgusting. In the past it's the broccoli and oyster sauce, tonight it's the crab Rangoon and spring rolls that look like they were thrown in an air fryer before picking them up. The Good 1) Our server was friendly and prompt. 2) The lo-mein was awesome; although I feel it could have been a bit darker in color. 3) The Islander chicken wings were delicious and drenched in oyster sauce; however, I do not think they can fully compete with China Dynasty's wings. The Not So Good 1) The hostess sat us at a dirty table. It looked as if it had been quickly cleaned and some spots were missed, as some grains of fried rice had been left behind from the previous diners. Luckily our server cleaned it without us having to ask. 2) The egg roll didn't taste very good -- kind of an odd flavor -- almost as if there was too much spice or seasoning in the filling. 3) The fried rice was very bland; it had no taste. The Islander, a West Shore Rd classic that's been serving the community for what seems like a hundred years. Today's lunch was highly respectable. No negatives to speak of. Ordered was the appetizer lunch combo, chicken Lo Mein lunch combo, yakta soup, a beef fried rice, and a cup of the notorious Islander Wing Oyster Sauce (for good measure) Take-out portions were plentiful, packed with rice and your main. The beef teriyaki and boneless spareribs that come with the appetizer combo received high marks. The chicken Lo Mein Combo was very nice. Both the pork fried rice, and the beef fried rice receive above standard marks. We used the Islander sauce on everything, which proved to put everything over the top rope. Why wouldn't you put Islander sauce on everything anyway? Lastly regarding the combo plates, The Islander Egg Roll simply rocks. One of the best. Paired with the House Oyster Sauce, it's hard to beat. The Yatka Mein Soup has the same Noodle as Lo Mein, with a broth flavor similar to the likes of Wonton Soup. It was hearty, and very fulfilling, the addition of pork strips were a nice touch. Taking into consideration not only this take-out visit, but also multiple dine-in visits, the Islander is certainly a very respectable, and damn good American Chinese Restaurant. I ordered fried rice, egg foo young and egg rolls. The rice had good flavor but was an overcooked mushy mess. I should have just ordered the meatless egg foo young because there was one or two pieces of pork in one pancake. I ordered take out and was not offered fortune cookies and this is Simon(owner) who did not offer. This place has gone downhill in the past several years. Islander is a very average restaurant. The service, atmosphere, and food are all average. I have tried the coconut shrimp, subgum chow mein, and the crab rangoons. All are decent, but nothing out of this world. However, the prices are good and they do have ample space for larger parties. I need to say right off the bat that I am NOT one to post bad about any business but I can't let this one go. Ordered from the Islander tonight. Order of beef fried rice, chicken fingers, brown gravy and House lo Mein. 34.00 for this. The fried rice was ok. Chicken Finger had either a small dried up piece of chicken or none at all. Extra charge for the gravy. But the worst of all was the lo mein. The vegetables and sauce were in a separate container from the noodles. The noodles were deep fried and the meat was so big and dry it was impossible to eat. I called the manager and he argued with me about what I ordered, said she read it back to me and I should have caught the mistake then. There was no mistake!! HE told me that I ordered chow mein not lo mein. I did NOT order chow mein but even if I had why would they serve it this way? Finally after going back and forth he offered to credit back my card the cost of the "low mein". Not taxes. Again I hate to do this but we were totally screwed tonight and the management was not only rude but didn't not take my word about what I ordered or why they would serve ANYTHING that way!! read more

Updated review the place has gotten worse the meat in the dishes is almost too chewy tough to eat every order. Last few times I ordered I was charged about $10 more than usual and what the menu items plus tax came too. I tried addressing with the staff on the phone next time I ordered but they just hung up in the middle of my asking why the price was so high and showed up with the food so I paid but never again. I did contact management to ask about the Price discrepancy as the prices on the menu and online have not changed but they never responded. I don't think they wanted to admit that takeout for one person was now $30 for chewy inedible meat and a dish that consists of primarily onions that can't even be reheated and used as leftovers for another day. This place has really gone downhill since I moved to the area 3 years ago. They once were my go to with a take out order at least once a week. But overtime the quality has gone down less meat and a poorer quality of meat - this currently must be the cheapest scrap pieces of chicken beef etc they can buy. You can't chew this stuff and even if you used scissors to cut it into tiny pieces still couldn't chew it enough to swallow without it getting stuck. It's typically really dried out too that's why everything they serve comes in soup portions of sauces but it doesn't rehydrate the meat you can tell exactly what's being done and why. Maybe a few pieces become chewable with enough sauce but the majority of the meat ends up in the trash and what's left when you remove the soup size amount of liquid is a ton of onions. So if you want to feel vaguely satisfied after paying $30 for one meal you'll have to eat about 1 1/2 cups of onions and hope that along with the 3 pieces of chewable beef that you managed to eat after having to spit more out you couldn't chew. But at least you ordered white rice and no one can really mess that up so for $30 you get to fill up on a box of rice you could have made at home - in fact there's rice in the cardboard right now your looking at it for .25 but hey at least you get force down that dry white rice with some duck sauce. read more

I've been a customer my whole life, my parents were friends with original owners, we went every Wednesday my entire childhood. I've always loved this place, my large family did too. But things have unfortunately continued to decline. We still loved the food up until 3-4 years ago. The last few years we've started getting so many bad dishes we changed our typical orders. We used to love the beef terkayi but after receiving several orders of super dry beef that went in the trash we stopped ordering it. Same with the walnut shrimp, it used to be phenomenal. It kept getting worse, first time I was hoping just a new line cook or an off day but it continue to disappoint. Smaller shrimp, overcooked, smaller portions. Same with spare ribs, shrimp and lobster sauce. Today was my moms 70th birthday and she wanted Islander so we tried again, for the last time!! Ordered Islander wings, generals chicken, and lo-mien combo. The chicken in the generals was soooo dried up it was stringy, couldn't chew it, immediately suck in our teeth like chicken jerky, really awful! The wings were also super dry. I called to ask for a refund and was shocked how rude and defensive the OWNER was on the phone. Told me nobody else complained today and it's all made in big batches so it's my problem. Told me to bring him the food so he could look at it, I told him, no way as it's my mother's birthday dinner and I just paid for delivery. He sent a driver to my house, took the food back and then called me to tell me he's refusing to refund me because the food was fine and it wasn't all there!!!! The wings were full minus the one I ate and spit out. The generals had more missing because my family had already made their plates, it was still half there. He told me I should have scrapped it off thier plates if I wanted a refund!! He was so incredibly rude and defensive about this nasty dry chicken instead of trying to fix or apoligize, he was so so rude! Actually came back to my house, took the food back, and has refused to refund me. Unreal. I will never go again and I will be sharing this experience with my friends and family. I ran restaurants for two decades, as a chef or gm, never have I had an issue like this. They violated health code taking my food back, and lost several lifetime customers.
