I've been a customer my whole life, my parents were friends with original owners, we went every Wednesday my entire childhood. I've always loved this place, my large family did too. But things have unfortunately continued to decline. We still loved the food up until 3-4 years ago. The last few years we've started getting so many bad dishes we changed our typical orders. We used to love the beef terkayi but after receiving several orders of super dry beef that went in the trash we stopped ordering it. Same with the walnut shrimp, it used to be phenomenal. It kept getting worse, first time I was hoping just a new line cook or an off day but it continue to disappoint. Smaller shrimp, overcooked, smaller portions. Same with spare ribs, shrimp and lobster sauce. Today was my moms 70th birthday and she wanted Islander so we tried again, for the last time!! Ordered Islander wings, generals chicken, and lo-mien combo. The chicken in the generals was soooo dried up it was stringy, couldn't chew it, immediately suck in our teeth like chicken jerky, really awful! The wings were also super dry. I called to ask for a refund and was shocked how rude and defensive the OWNER was on the phone. Told me nobody else complained today and it's all made in big batches so it's my problem. Told me to bring him the food so he could look at it, I told him, no way as it's my mother's birthday dinner and I just paid for delivery. He sent a driver to my house, took the food back and then called me to tell me he's refusing to refund me because the food was fine and it wasn't all there!!!! The wings were full minus the one I ate and spit out. The generals had more missing because my family had already made their plates, it was still half there. He told me I should have scrapped it off thier plates if I wanted a refund!! He was so incredibly rude and defensive about this nasty dry chicken instead of trying to fix or apoligize, he was so so rude! Actually came back to my house, took the food back, and has refused to refund me. Unreal. I will never go again and I will be sharing this experience with my friends and family. I ran restaurants for two decades, as a chef or gm, never have I had an issue like this. They violated health code taking my food back, and lost several lifetime customers. It's sad to see such a great restaurant be run into the ground by greedy owners. read more

First time there. Ordered the beef and broccoli. About the worst I've ever ordered. Hardly any beef. Way too much broccoli. The broccoli seemed old and undercooked and stringy. We were looking to try a new takeout place to try since moving to the area. We placed our order and were given a timeframe for pickup. Steamed dumplings- the best part of the order. You get 4 per order with a dipping sauce. General Tso's chicken - the sauce isn't spicy and my fiancé almost swallowed a bone from the "boneless" chicken. The chicken fingers were mostly batter with a very thin piece of chicken within. Both the chicken fingers and egg rolls had an aftertaste. This could be due to the kind of oil used for frying. This restaurant is hit or miss, I find this particular true with delivery orders. Many times the chicken wigs are dry or the boneless ribs are hard and dry other times it is good. Consistency is a problem here, I have been going to this restaurant for over 35 years. Like most reviews on this location some reviews are at a 5 and others a 1 because it truly matters when and how you are served your food. My husband and I haven't tried The Islander in awhile and I felt like having their spare ribs and Islander rice. The rib meat would fall off the bone. I got 2 orders of bone in spare ribs, Islander rice, and fantail shrimp to go. The shrimp batter was blah, the rice was good but the ribs were just terrible. They were unbelievably chewy. Used to love this place The food used to always be delicious and welcomed unfortunately that is no longer the case. Over the last few months I've given this a second and third try two out of the three times I wound up getting sick. Several friends in my group also got sick unfortunately I can't say it was one dish we all ate different things. They seem to have a talent for making great noodles, from thick and fat to thin and crisp. The Islander has lunch specials as well as appetizers, soups and things like pu pu platters. One thing that I especially like is that the veggies are always very fresh and tasty and the broccoli usually has a snap to it. The service is very friendly and the servers usually call us by our names and remember what we tend to order. The restaurant is huge, with separate rooms for large groups and booths that are spacious enough to stretch out while devouring the large portions of food. The Islander has been around for decades and frequently attracts a large crowd at dinner time. A convenient and cool restaurant that offers a huge variety of different Asian American things to eat. Just stay away ..... I recently ordered food and there was plastic in my food. PLASTIC.... I thought it was a shrimp shell but seeing that I had chicken and it was very think and clear it was plastic. It didn't come from my to go container seeing that it wasn't broken. This isn't the only time something like this has happened to me here. One time I had rotten onions in my food after telling the server they blamed me saying I was wrong and then took it back saying I was right. My family and I went about 2 weeks ago. I was a little skeptical to go due to the reviews here. Well we loved it and going back for Father's Day! Crab Rangoon, beef teriyaki delicious! The salt and pepper wings OMG I'm not a wing girl but I never had a wing that good!!! Definitely recommend! I can't remember what the others got for a main. I got the shrimp general tsa. I did read a review that her hubby likes spice and got a 8/9 level and it was just right. I got a level 7 and I definitely could of went up to a 10/11 level. I love mine super spicy honestly I could do 12/14 level. I am going to do level 10 next time. I will say my friend whose a baby with heat said it's a kick but that's it she could go up as well! The bartender there has zero personality and is rude . I moved here recently and I love Chinese and scorpion bowls. I went there two weeks in a row. I spent alot each time, was extremely polite, and even tipped big and was still treated like crap. It was the same one both times. I won't be returning due to her . This restaurant has been declining for a while. The service was awful tonight. The first girl came over to put down our place mats and silverware and just left them on the corner of the table instead of placing them in front of us. Our waitress never came over and asked us if everything was okay and never offered refills on our EMPTY glasses of soda. We asked for napkins and she never brought them over. The food was mediocre at best. My wife's ribs were mostly fat, as was my son's sesame chicken. I ordered the the Islander bird nest and asked for a to go box and she brought one that was not big enough. When I asked her for a bigger one she said that was all she had, which I know is false as I have ordered it to go in the past. We will NEVER come back. I recently went for a quick evening bite with my brother & hubby to-be a few months ago since the three of us were in the area they happened to be open. I was pleasantly surprised when we were treated to prompt, friendly and accurate service despite the restaurant being incredibly busy. There was no wait time and our two appetizers and three combos took less than 15 minutes to hit the table. Is it just me, or did they kick the grease down a notch? Everything was totally delicious and my chow mein was chewy, tasty and piping hot, a total turnaround from my last Yelp. I actually really wanted to give 'em four stars but considering how many times I've been served a less than spectacular dining experience in the past, I figure I won't go bananas just yet & wait for another visit in the near future. My girlfriend got orange chicken and I got the general chicken. Both were combo meals. Food was phenomenal and it was really piled up on our plates, they weren't stingy. We also both got one drink each, and we got a kid's French fry meal. I was expecting this bill to be at least $60+ for the combo meals and drinks alone, to my surprise the total came out to only about $45! So, good quality. Good quantity. Good price. The two of us went in search of a decent asian restaurant, and judging by the number of cars in the parking lot, we thought we hit the jackpot. Turns out everything we had was bland, from the vegetarian dish to the chicken curry ... I think they feel oversizing the portions will make up for lack of taste, but the experience was really not worth wasting our money on this place. To be fair, the service was decent and prompt. The waitress was very friendly and personable but she really had a hard time keeping track of her tables. She kept bringing the wrong dishes to different tables and giggling about it. We waited ten minutes to get our water, another ten to put in our order. We got our apps (hot and sour soup and crab rangoon)- the food was decent. We then waited another 15 minutes for our meals. Again decent food. General's Shrimp was bland despite the fact it was advertised as a spicy manadarin sauce- it was more like sticky, syrup- no flavor. Kung Pao Chicken was flavorful. The waitress had promised to increase the spice as she told us she loved spicy food and had to put in special requests to the chefs to make the flavor up to her standards. This place used to be the go-to Chinese take out in Warwick when I was a kid...back in the 90's this was it for Friday nights with the family. Since moving out of Warwick nearly 20 years ago, I hadn't been back but went since we were meeting a friend in the Warwick area who still patrons this place. When I tell you it hasn't changed in 20 years...it hasn't changed a bit in 20 years. From the décor, menus, furniture, bar area, everything. We were sat in what looked like an auxiliary dining area with few other customers so it was awkwardly quiet for a bit. Our server was super friendly with the 2 yr old we had with us. We started with Mai Tais (our usual at Chinese restaurants). This was NOT a Mai Tai, it was basically the equivalent to Hawaiian Punch with white rum...blah! We ordered sesame chicken combo, beef and string bean combo, crab rangoons, pork lo mein, and beef teriyaki. The rice was fine but lacked some fresh pop of veggies, the beef combo had so much oyster sauce it tasted more like fish, the beef teriyaki had little to no seasoning and just tasted bland, and the crab rangoons were just "meh" and soggy. It was a huge disappointment given that I used to love this place as a kid, but it's gone downhill. It's a bit on the dirty/unorganized side, servers had their drinks/coffees in plain sight, etc...just lacked some professionalism. I can't say I'll return despite my fond memories. read more

I just came here with my girlfriend after hearing all of the hype behind the place- hands down best Chinese food in a Rhode Island. The place is very clean, staff/wait staff is corteous and fast, and the food is well priced. My girlfriend has a food allergy and our waitress was very accomodating to our needs. I must be spoiled from eating at Ye Express in West Warwick. The make EVERYTHING fresh in house. The hot and sour soup is made to order. The Islander has been around as long as I can remember, probably over 30 years. I've eaten here in the past and never had any complaints. Today wasn't the best. I ordered a bowl of hot and sour soup which was meh. I also ordered the appetizer combo. It has boneless pork, house chicken wings, beef terriyaki, and pork fried rice. The best part was probably the fried rice as it was most likely the freshest. The boneless pork was mushy and tasted a little off. The beef terriyaki was ok, not the best I ever had. The chicken wings were very soft. I feel like everything was prepped way ahead of time and not so fresh. read more
