OMG soooo yummy at Island Choiz Restaurant!

If you're searching for to-the-bone sweetness oxtail and curry goat LOOK NO FURTHER! THIS IS IT! We had our oxtail and goat with its sister rice and peas and cold sorrel juice. I'm so full because as it was so good I almost ate all...at once...so not me. The shop is set up like a little cafe with a few tables and chairs but it's really a "to go" restaurant. It isn't super put together (remember my OCD?) But it's not dirty either. A few scattered (for sale) CDs with Island music on the counter, a chair out of place, a table needed wiping. Enough Freedom! Customers and staff alike were jovial but hey, I expected nothing less, that's that Island mentality for you *grins* The generous OH SO TASTY helping I got for a small made me feel like speaking their Jamaican patois MON! Hehehe. Whenever I know I'm gomma be up this side I'm eating no place else! The End.

What-gwan bredren!!!!!!!!!! dis place be LIT AF. the prices were beyond cheap for food that tastes so good.I got the large ox tail and my friend looked at me as if i was not going to finish all the food. He was surprised to see me kill it all in 15 minutes. The thing i loved the most was the the place was also frequented by a Caribbean population. We weren't even looking a place on yelp, we were just hungry and this place happened to be open. When i saw the ratings I knew I wasn't going to eat anywhere else.

Food is banging! Everything taste good here. Kudos to the chef and crew!!! This is my go to spot now when I'm around my old way in BK. Authentic Jamaican food. My two favorites are the oxtails and the jerk pork. Def give those two a try. Also Pam is awesome and extremely helpful!

The correct location is 1140 Utica Ave, Brooklyn, NY, the day we went it was at a designated pickup locker where your food is stored. This confusion added an extra 30 minutes to my trip. Wait Time & Ordering Experience The kiosk estimated a wait time of 6-16 minutes, but we ended up waiting around 40 minutes for our order. That was upsetting. What We Ordered Mains: Fried Chicken, Honey Glazed Salmon, Catfish Sides: Blueberry Cornbread, Candied Coconut Yams, Mac & Cheese Food Quality Catfish: Easily the standout of the meal. Perfectly cooked, an easy 10/10. Fried Chicken: A major letdown. It was dry and under-seasoned, tasting mostly of salt. Honey Glazed Salmon: Unfortunately, there was no noticeable glaze and the fish was also dry. Sides Candied Coconut Yams & Mac and Cheese: Both were delicious and classic comfort food done right. Blueberry Cornbread: Tasted more like a blueberry muffin. While not bad on its own, it didn't complement the savory items well. Value & Final Thoughts Combo platters (1 main + 2 sides) run about $20-$24. For that price and the long wait time (40-45 minutes), I expected a bit more consistency. The catfish and sides were worth the trip, but the other mains left much to be desired. Pros: Halal soul food is a great concept and rare to find. Cons: The chicken and salmon. Would I return? Possibly for the catfish. But considering catfish is halal almost anywhere, and the other mains didn't deliver. Wonderful concept!

We got seated right away as it wasn't crowded on a Friday night. Our waiter Mike was cool as he proceeded to take our order. For our staters we got the crab bites and garlic bread sticks which were both ok. The bread wasn't the softest. And the crab bites in her words was like an imitation fish cake. We then both got the Cajun Shrimp Alfredo Pasta which was the best dish of the night. Our drinks both were EXTREMELY weak it was like drinking juice and for a non drinker like myself that says a lot lol. I got the Henny Colada and she being a Bajan ordered the Bajan Rum Punch which looked NOTHING like rum punch as it came out looking more like a Long Island ice tea. She even ended up ordering an extra shot to help it out. All in all I would come back for the vibes and a different drink of course. Happy eating :)

We were seated right away. Our server was very nice. The service I can say is outstanding We ordered the crab meat deviled eggs, the chicken shrimp and waffles. As I'm heading to the restaurant from NJ, I realized I received a missed call from them @ 4:07pm. I called them back. They are asking me to push my reservation back to 5:30pm because their brunch went over. It would take their kitchen time to switch over to the dinner portion. Idk about you but that doesn't sound like a "me" problem, especially when I booked in advance. For the first 30 mins, I was just going to order drinks and some apps anyways. I told the rep on the phone that I'd like to keep my reservation for the same time. She said see you then. I arrive @ 4:52pm and the music is loud. So loud that people were yelling to speak to each other. It doesn't look like a regular brunch session but an event as there were decorations everywhere. The hostess comes to speak to me and she says "yeah, like I mentioned on the phone, we're still switching over so we'd have to push you back to 5:10/5:15". I looked around and it didn't look like anything was even in the process of getting switched over. It was still packed with people, taking photos, sitting down and eating. I said okay. She said they would call me when they were ready. I walked out and went to another restaurant. I'm not about to waste my time waiting here when another establishment with good customer service is willing to seat and feed me. And guess what? I never did receive that callback. Figures. So everyone saying make a reservation, it clearly doesn't matter if one is made or not. They don't respect others' time. It's businesses like this that make it harder for other black owned businesses. Advice to the business owner: if your brunches are that packed and crazy, consider placing a cap on the table time. You'll earn respect, earn more money and have continuous reach from setting expectations early on rather than having a free for all. They will never get my business and I would never recommend. First impressions are everlasting.
