After years of seeing a variety of optometrists through the Lens Crafters chains in SoCal and NYC, I am happy to finally have found an optometrist that knows my medical history, and with whom I now have a nice rapport. I am the type of person who switches optometrists every time I move. I have never felt any sort of loyalty to an eye doctor. Until I visited Irvine Optometry. I look forward to many years visiting Dr. Tang and I recommend her services to anyone who has the ability to make it to thsi office. Here are my reasons: 1. Professional Level of Skill - Until Dr. Tang, I have never been outfitted with lens that got my vision to 20/20. I admit, I'm not the easiest patient to deal with. Dr. Tang was the first person to make me come back to re-examine my eyes and it worked. She chose to do the best job she could over my desire for convenience and in that sense she exercised the highest level of professional skill to correct my vision. In short, she cares and she wants to make sure she did everything possible to make sure her patients can see clearly. 2. Thorough and Explanatory - Never have I experienced such a thorough examination and explanation as to why certain procedures were performed. Dr. Tang even conducted one or two examinations twice to ensure the data was successfully replicated. 3. The Lens Comparison - In my prior exams with other doctors I was never questioned about my choice of "1 or 2" when attempting to determine the best lens for my eyes. Dr. Tang not only questioned me, but narrowed the scope of my vision by constantly checking my vision. She even paued to allow me to refresh my eyes so that the procedure was not influenced too much by external factors. This is one of the reason I was finally able to obtain 20/20 corrective lens, for the first time in my life! I could go on, but these are the top 3 reasons I will come back. I'm a bit torn.. If this review was solely for Dr. Tang, I would give it 5 stars - no doubt. She is so nice and personable. I was referred to her through the office that did my LASIK surgery - that way I didn't have to go all the way to Orange for my post-op check ups. I recently had my 1 year post-op appointment last week, and all went well. Dr. Tang did a very thorough eye exam, all went well. I also had to get retinal photos taken - note: additional charge. After my visit was over, I went to the front to pay. The receptionist/assistant, I think her name is Sandy, told me the visit came out to $50. I didn't expect to have to pay that much, so I asked Sandy for an itemized receipt. She told me that she would be able to do it, but I had to wait until she finished packaging up boxes for the UPS guy - even though she was just ringing me up. She interrupted helping me to pack boxes because the UPS guy doesn't like to wait?! So that means that the customer has to wait instead? So rude! If I had to wait because there were other customers, I would understand, but there was no one else in the lobby/office. I was irritated, and it took her about 20-25 minutes to hand me a receipt. I didn't look at my receipt until later, and I realized the date of service was incorrect - it said May 2016. So, I had to wait almost half an hour for a receipt.. AND it's wrong? Ugh! I went back today after I got off work to see if I could get it corrected. Dr. Tang's mother greeted me and went to the back to ask Sandy about my issue. Sandy comes storming out of the back, receipt in hand, and the first thing she says to me is: "I don't understand what the problem is. This date is the date you received services (pointing to the May date). You didn't have the exam in August. This was just printed in August." I replied, "No, my appointment was last week, not back in May." She kept arguing with me for a while. Then, she raised her voice to me, "Where would they get this date then?! You had your eye exam in May." (Note: she typed up the original one.. you tell me where you got that date). I told her, "No. My eye exam was last week. Check my patient chart." After arguing with me in the office lobby, she storms off without a word. Five minutes later, she comes back out with a smile and hands me a receipt with the correct date and says, "Here you go sweetie." I said thank you and walked out. Eww! No apology and so fake! Also, while I was waiting on her, I heard her snap at Dr. Tang when the doctor asked her to help out a patient. Two times within the past week, my encounters with Sandy were very unpleasant. I don't remember seeing her before this last visit, and I read a couple other reviews with patients saying they did not have pleasant experiences with her either. She has no customer service skills and no regard for the reputation of Dr. Tang's practice. I was thinking about getting sunglasses here, but not if I have to deal with her! This review is more for Dr. Tang's staff than herself. But before I get into that, let me just say how great Dr. Tang is. I've been wearing glasses for most of my life so I've had my fair share of optometrists but she is by far the best I've ever seen. She's so caring, genuine and THOROUGH (I can't emphasize that enough). However, the exams are on the pricy side but I wouldn't have minded that at all if it weren't for her staff. With that being said here's the review for her staff members: They have no manners and no patience. If the receptionist is just tired of talking to you, she won't hesitate to give you a major attitude which leaves you speechless. I have never experienced that kind of rude behavior before. You work in a professional setting that requires great customer service. Your attitude and the rude way you treat the patients will only reflect badly upon the business which I'm sure Dr. Tang worked hard for. So if you have no patience for people, I suggest you find another job. According to Dr. Tang there have been many problems and complaints with the lack of customer service from her staff so that just shows you how unprofessional they are. I will not be going back to Irvine Optometry again. It's a shame that an amazing doctor like Dr. Tang has such terrible staff members. I might reconsider going back if she replaces them all. I didn't actually go see Dr. Tang so this review is not about her but rather her office staff. I walked in to look for a new pair of frames and their selection was smaller than I would've of liked but ok. The thing that has me giving her a 1 star rating is due to an old lady who looked like an older version of Dr. Tang so I'm going to assume it's her mother. She walked up to me while my friend and I was looking at glasses and went "let me tell you how wrong your glasses are on your face". Then she went on for about 5 minutes to point out how big my face was and how bad of a fit my current glasses were and how ugly they were. This place is so shady that I felt I MUST sign up a yelp account just to warn the others. I was desperately looking to get new contacts since my old ones ran out. When i called the first desk lady, she assured me that they are within my VSP network, but when i saw the inflated invoice later, I knew something was not right. Doctor tang was the pretentious lady who fitted me my contacts. i was later told that i HAVE TO use the biotoric lenses since it will help correct my vision. when i asked whats wrong with fitting me Accuvue lenses which i have always used to, the doctor was not able to give me a straight answer but when i knew that she charges 30 dollars more on fitting when she prescribe biotoric lenses, everything seemed to make sense. I feel horrible that my vision insurance needs to pay so much for an average fitting at irvine optometry and i hope my story will help warn the next victim going to irvine optometry. read more

Disappointed. I came in with a lot of pain and pressure in my eye. As far as I know that considers to be an emergency and could be the sign of more serious and potentially fatal problems. The receptionist asked me if I have an appointment and I said no. The day before was Sunday and they were closed so I couldn't make an appointment also I told her it is an emergency and I can't even drive. She said " well if you want I can look see when the doctor can see you in the next few days and I'll make an appointment for you". Obviously at that point I left and went somewhere else which the doctor saw me immediately before any other patient. I read a lot of good reviews about this doctor but it is unfortunate that they get a bad review because of the receptionist. read more

Please read and make an informed decision! My husband has been a customer of Dr Tangs for several years and has never had an issue but this last visit was horrible... Previous review is correct you have no issue as long as you don't question anything... The staff ran the usual tests and then included a photo retina test and failed to inform my husband that it was not covered by insurance (also the test is optional...not absolutely necessary to see the health of your eyes) Then Dr Tang informed my husband he needs reading glasses but failed to inform him of the difference between reading glasses and prescription glasses (and yes maybe he should have known but I also think it is good customer service to inform your customer so they can make an educated decision...) So a purchase of $105 reading glasses were made (with UV protection- which do you really need UV most people read indoors) When we got the glasses we realized he spent $105 on glasses you can purchase for $5 at CVS...and then when we got our explanation of benefits from insurance there were some discrepancies between what we paid and what the insurance said we should have paid... I called and spoke with Sandy and told her I had some questions about the billing (in all fairness I was quite direct and told her I had an issue with the billing discrepancies and that I felt like my husband was sold unnecessary glasses) she immediately got defensive and started running through the bill so I could not get a word in Then she said well your husband is an adult and really he should be calling (yes but I do all the billing and that is why I am questioning it) she went on to be quite condescending...I told her my husband and I would come into the office on Saturday to speak with Dr Tang and she said okay bye and hung up on me before I could get her name...so I called back and asked for her name. Then an hour later I decided to go into the office because my encounter with Sandy was so horrible and I wanted to get a chance to just discuss how badly I felt things had gone...well that conversation was worse...again she cut me off several times, said I was rude first that's why she reacted like that...I told her I understood why she could not discuss my husband's account with me but the way she spoke to me was very unprofessional and unnecessary...even after that her apology to me was - well if that's how you took it, sorry you took it that way... I did not meet Dr Tang but the impression I was left with after encountering Sandy was that once they get your money they don't care about how you feel or if there is an issue as long as you don't question anything it seems like you will have a good interaction...sad! Originally a one star review but EDITED REVIEW!!!! Monica from Dr Tangs office called and I was wrong my husband needed those glasses because he has a stigmatism...I'm grateful that they took the time to call me and give me the right information. I did tell Monica that because Sandy was not pleasant to deal with I would need to think about returning but I have to say because Monica took the time to call me and was willing to discuss the billing questions, Monica and Dr Tang have earned my trust back and I am proud to say I was wrong about Dr Tang! Avoid at all costs. This place is a total rip off. I have eye insurance and eventhough they are a contract provider, they charge me extra because "the insurance doesn't pay that well". I called the insurance company and they said that it's wrong to do so, that they should not charge the patient extra cost because of that reason. Then Dr. Tang said that my old contacts are no good (eventhough they work just fine) and that she just got back from contact lens meeting last week and recommended these expensive ones. The whole thing cost me a few hundred bucks while I could have gone to Costco for a lot cheaper. Lesson learned. read more

i was in for an eye exam to get my contacts for the year. i have insurance but it still costed me $280 for a year's supply. the eye exam is ridiculously expensive at over $100. also the optometrist there was also trying to get me to go with the daily disposables. i recommend golden vision optometry in the area. good service and reasonable price. i regret going to irvine optometry, i feel ripped off. read more

I recommend them for the examination, but would not recommend for lens/frame purchase unless money is no object.

1. I did NOT order anything from them but they claim insurance already. It is totally wrong. 2. I went there for contact lenses. The doctor doesn't give me the brand I always wear so I have to go back again and again. -- update ----------------------------------------- 1. If you like it or don't care it, it doesn't bother you. I prefer know what is going on if staffs there need to do something for their convenience. 2. Although I live in walking distance, I really don't like to visit so many times. Except these two. Overall is good. btw The fitting fee is most expensive I ever had.The price of contact lenses is good. Finding the right fit in an optometrist is sometimes a difficult thing especially when you have eye phobias like I do, however Dr. Tang is by far the most patient, kind hearted, knowledgeable optometrist I have had the pleasure of meeting. Her office is clean, high tech and her employees were thoughtful, professional and made the entire experience a joy. The high tech equipment gave me a bird's-eye view of the condition of my eyes and was impressive to see.
