We've been in the neighborhood for over 15 years and have never tried this place. We always wanted to and never got a chance to. So finally today we went out of our way to try the place for lunch. It's very cute inside. When you first walk in, you are met by a bar and off to the side there's a small seating area with booths and tables. The staff pointed us to the seats and said we can sit anywhere. We grabbed a corner table. On the menu were typical pub food. I got the fish and chips, my daughter got the chicken in the basket, and my husband got the chicken pot pie. After getting our drinks we waited a short time for the food to arrive. They had malt vinegar for the fries and fish and chips as well as ketchup. First the fish and chips were well battered but the fish inside tasted like it was frozen. It was flaky and moist but maybe a little too moist. If you leave it too long it gets super soggy. The fries were big and crispy. My daughter's fried chicken was a surprise. The batter was crispy and well seasoned. The chicken itself was piping hot and juicy. It was delicious. My husband's chicken pot pie was in a huge bowl topped with a large round buttery flaky puff pastry. My husband really enjoyed it. The staff were friendly and attentive. I got my first taste of the holidays when I dined at Irish Cottage with the amazing holiday decor. The miniature Christmas village is so festive. The set up indoors almost reminds me of a family dining room with the framed photos and TV on the wall. The Chicken Pot Pie had a buttery top crust and melted in my mouth. The filling wasn't too heavy, but it was savory and filling. Sat outside and requested a high chair for my toddler. After waiting about 5 minutes I went inside to ask again, even offered to bring it out myself, was told it would be right out. Another 5-10 minutes of sitting there being ignored by servers who walked by, while they were bringing coffee to a man who sat after us. Tried to get their attention, and was ignored. Now technically known as The Cottage, this is a close competitor for the best bar in Forest Hills title IMO, just being slightly edged out by previously mentioned Dirty Pierres. This one also has the distinction of being the neighborhoods oldest, its dark wooded barroom dripping with vintage atmosphere and gloriously showing every day of its many years, its seats usually filled by longtime local regulars. Happily, when the longtime matron passed in the dark earliest days of the Covid epidemic, at the moment when Queens was the worlds epicenter of the virus, the longtime manager stepped up and purchased the place, keeping it going and retaining much of the rest of the great longtime staff, heavy on charming Irish natives. The food is much much better than one would expect, so much so that I often order take out, a relative rarity where bar food is concerned. I never had an authentic Irish breakfast which needed to change. I headed over to Austin st to the cottage for breakfast and omg the I can't believe how good everything was. I got the breakfast platter which served a variety of different things like eggs sausages black and white pudding which was delicious. About 30 minutes later a shorter Latino bartender looked to be 18 years old I think her name was Andy? She came behind the bar and started vaping as well!! Ignored me for another 15 minutes until I had to wave at her! What kind of bar is this? As I waited to get my second drink I noticed a tiny cockroach on the draft line by the Guinness handle...my skin instantly started to crawl! I wanted to leave once I got my food.. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and there was a LONG BLACK HAIR in my food!!! I asked Andy to take it back and I didn't want anything else but the check. They refused to take the black hair chicken quesadilla off my tab! I asked for the manager and they refused to get the manager, so I had no choice but to pay for the food I did not eat. $40 for terrible food, terrible service, and disgusting bar atmosphere. We decided to sit outside, which was a great call, as the interior has more of a pub vibe, whereas the outdoor area is more family-friendly. The staff was very attentive and kept popping back outside to check on us and the other patrons dining outside. As for food, I highly recommend the brunch menu, as the brunch comes with Irish soda bread and a drink (coffee, mimosa, etc.). I went with the Irish breakfast, which was quite heavy, but very delicious. My family enjoyed their omlettes and burger. Was keeping it light, so ordered a basket of Fries ($8) to share, as well as a Guinness ($8). Guinness is poured well enough, satisfying after letting it settle for a bit. Fries come out shortly after the drinks - super greasy that could not be dabbed off. After having a couple, we didn't really enjoy it and let the waitress know. I really wanted to support this place because we live in the neighborhood, and we have been multiple times over the last couple of years, but this is the 2nd time in a row we've gone for brunch only to experience bad, bordering on combative, service and mediocre food. My boyfriend ordered steak and eggs, medium rare. The steak came out medium well. He sent it back which is a very uncommon thing for him to do. When the server came back she said, "just so you know, that steak was medium rare. Maybe it's the lighting in here, but it was medium rare." Listen. I worked in fine dining for almost 20 years - at steakhouses. That steak was medium well and difficult to cut. He said, that's not what medium rare looks and tastes like. She replied well it was medium rare and I saw blood when I took it down. He asked for them to cook it rare then if that's how to get a bit of red. She was like okay. The entire interaction was shocking in terms of quality of service. To argue with and completely gaslight a guest is crazy. We waited and waited, but soon I was finished with my food (that I of course shared with my boyfriend). We ended up asking for the food to go because he had to go to work. When she brought the check, she did have the manager give us a discount. However, as many of the reviews here have stated, the prices on the bill were higher than listed on the menu ($27.95 instead of $26 for the steak and $24.95 instead of $22 for the eggs benedict). At that point, it wasn't worth arguing about since we just wanted to leave. When I got home and unpacked the food, I saw that we were only given one egg instead of two and we weren't given any breakfast potatoes. Ridiculous. I still left a good tip because, like I said, I was in the service industry for a long time and I can't help myself. The only reason I'm giving two stars here is because the server came outside to give me the beanie I had left on the seat which was very kind and I appreciate. We will not be back which is a huge shame. I recommend that if they're going to have steak on the menu, they train their cooks and servers on what each temp should look at. Food is good and moderately priced in this small -- authentically cozy -- dining room lined with wood booths. I had already noted dishes I wanted to order on my next visit, when I saw on our check that the price for each item was higher than the prices listed on the menu. !! There was no explanation printed on the bill. When we sat down I had asked the server if there would be a surcharge for paying with a credit card. She said she didn't know -- is that credible for a server??? -- and would check, but never mentioned it again. She said the increased prices on the bill were greater if paying by credit card. BUT, she hadn't asked how we were paying before printing the check, and again, the bill did not state that a surcharge had been added. I said we would be paying in cash and asked for a bill without the surcharges. THIS ONE was marked CASH RECEIPT. So the unsuspecting customer who didn't examine the bill would pay more than expected, without knowing it. The rate of price increase was 3.5%. If restauranteurs want to charge for payment by credit card, they should make that procedure clear on the menu before the order is taken. Otherwise this furtive increase in the bill without explanation or notice to the customer looks like the scam that this cute place is pulling off. read more

I have stopped in many times over the years to have a pint at the bar but had never tried any of the food. Last night, I was in the mood for the ultimate comfort food type of meal and had been showing a colleague some pictures of my travels on Ireland; I immediately knew I wanted Shepherd's Pie. The pie was delivered rather quickly and was perfectly seasoned and prepared and the meat tender, flavorful, and juicy. The mashed potatoes lightly crisped on top but very fluffy from being whipped. Absolute abomination. We used to love this place in the before times. The food was always fresh and excellent. Now it's horrifying. The fish isn't fresh. It's drenched in oil. The smell is never going away. The old salad must have been doused in terrible dressing -- yesterday. Soggy and foul. Had to remove all the raw peppers and onions and tomatoes from the "Cesar" (sp) salad. Maybe it's s the way a cook named Cesar liked it? Awesome Irish Bar!!! Finally found a place in Forest Hills that screams "Buffalo, NY!". We walked in the bar in the middle of one of their trivia nights and they allowed us to sneak in for the last round. The bartender was attentive and really made you feel like part of the family. My only complaint was when we ordered Irish car bombs, they only give you half of a Guinness. I get it, it's less messy but atleast give me the other half in the can!
