Great Irish pub - very warm and welcoming. The music is mostly '80s and 90's and not too loud so you can have a conversation. Food is fantastic. The steak tidbits are great - nice, tender, tasty chunks of beef - not small offcuts like you get elsewhere. The Guinness is always fresh and the bartender takes care of you once the servers leave. I only wish their kitchen stayed open later. Kitchen closes at 10 pm on the dot - you'll see all the cooks run out at 10 so if you're someone who wants to eat late, you might feel a bit rushed to order. read more

It's hit or miss at this restaurant depending on what you order. Some things they do really well (i.e. brunch and bar food) and others (i.e. steak night) they don't. I recently tried the strip steak and asked for it to be cooked medium. Unfortunately I had to send it back bc it was closer to well done, which is something I rarely do. The 2nd steak was cooked to medium but it lacked flavor. It was pretty bland. The sides were really good though. The service here is almost always slow and I have looked for staff to get assistance. Lovely place! Great drinks and a cute little backyard. The servers are incredibly nice and its pretty packed on a Thursday. I recommend the Spiked Lemonade, truly a delicious and refreshing drink for a summer night. We ordered the steak bits, which was fine. Met up here for Saturday brunch to sit curbside (for pupper purposes) and hang out with my core group. New Yorkers have been brunching since before it was cool and the Skillman understands that. We don't always need a view with our meal, but we do need a darn good meal, and I was a very happy camper with the avocado toast - poached egg and all. The Skillman is a play on the street name but also a nod of the skill it takes to craft a good meal. And there were no bones about it, you'll be happy with whatever you find here. I don't normally order poached eggs but I do enjoy a poached egg for sure. I'm just learning how to perfect them at home, so why not order it and remind myself how it's supposed to be done. I think mine was a teensy bit overcooked, but it's still miles better than the first time I poached an egg. I ordered the mimosa with my meal- there's no bottomless option here. Another issue was the table. Our waiter insisted it was rocking because of the uneven side walk, but, the sidewalk was even where we were sitting. *THIS IS ACTUALLY A 3.5 RATING* This place opened up recently so we wanted to give it a try. First look at the menu, prices were a bit higher than expected but not break the bank. The menu isn't very extensive but the dishes all sound good. We started with the burrata and fig appetizer. The burrata is delicious and the figs make a good accompaniment with the balsamic glaze. My one complaint is the bread that comes with it are pathetic little slivers. The should be larger so you can put all these great ingredients together. We shared the mussels which came with larger bread and the broth was very tasty. The mussels however were very unimpressive. They were a bit slimy and most of them didn't open. I thought it was just a few of them but by the end I realized that they were all like this. Hopefully this was a fluke because I saw others with mussels that looked better. We mentioned this to the waiter who was very apologetic. We also shared the chicken which was delicious and cooked perfectly. All in all this was not a terrible experience. There is nice outdoor seating and the staff is very friendly and attentive, but the food could use some work. The waiter took the mussels off the bill which was a very nice thing to do. read more

Been to skillman 3-4 times. This time is by far the worst in terms of quality of food and service. We came here for brunch and knew that we couldn't go wrong because we've been here. I guess everything started to go downhill as soon as my orange juice arrived and it was basically the water glass tall (which was a small glass) with 2/3 of ice. I scooped the ice out cuz I don't want to drink a trunk of ice and it was only two sips of orange juice left. We ordered fresh toast and omelette. Guess what? They put jams on the fresh toast. Seriously who the hell does that?!!! The waitress dropped of syrus after we started eating. We ordered French toast from here before and they used to give you some fresh fruits and cream. They have a back patio and outdoor dining with heat lamps and festive decoration for the holidays. Even on cold days, they have patrons dining outside with their children (including fur babies!). The service can be a little on the slow side at times, but why rush your meal when you can sit and chat with friendly locals? Both the in restaurant meals and holiday catered meals aren't cheap but isn't unreasonable considering comparable options in the area as well as portion sizes. I know we're in hard times right now during this quarantine so I'm very sorry to have to write this, but what kind of moron puts a soupy curry dish into a paper box/cardboard container?? A container with openings and slits. Most of the liquid spilled out of the box and into the bag. I had to quickly pour the contents into a glass bowl at home. And I poured the liquid that was in the bag into the bowl. I said eff it and risked it. Hopefully I don't get sick or food poisoning. The dish itself was pretty bland for a $27 dish. I have been dining out lately to help local restaurants pay the bills. This place charges almost twenty bucks for a burger and it was probably fits comfortably within the top 3 worst burgers I've had to pay money over $5 for. The patty was large, dry, and flavorless. The entire burger was flavorless and took a really long time to come out. It might've been a turkey burger because i had to go home and take a nap afterwards. The fries were ok. Came here on a Saturday night to check this new local place out. We were greeted by a very friendly staff who let us choose our table, of course we sat outside because it was a nice evening. We started with the Burrata & Figs wth a balsamic drizzle. The plate arrived and was beautiful and delicious. There were at least 8 whole figs (split in 1/2 of course). The only negative thing I can say is that this dish needed more bread, it only had 3 little pieces with this dish. For dinner we ordered we ordered the Steamed Mussels & the Roasted Chicken. We'll start with the good... the chicken was beautifully presented with perfectly crispy skin over a bed of fluffy cloud-like mashed potatoes with adorably delicious fresh baby carrots finished with the au jus. If we stopped right here this would be a 4-star review, but alas we ordered the mussels. The bowl of mussels was also presented beautifully. I unfortunately couldn't eat more than 6 mussels as the mussels themselves were not good. My daring husband managed to finish most of them. The broth served was a wine base with chorizo and navy beans, which was aromatic and very flavorful. We told our server that we weren't sure if the mussels were undercooked or a bad batch, but wanted to bring it to his attention, he seemed appreciative of the feedback. We were not looking for any sort of compensation but when we got the bill we were not charged for the mussels, which we were obviously pleased with. Finally the bathrooms. One of the restrooms was out of order leaving only 1 restroom available for the entire restaurant. At one point we were talking to another patron who went to the restaurant across the street to use the facilities there since he "couldn't hold it any longer" and gave up waiting. I waited to use the restroom and when I did, it was clean but the soap was empty. Final words... Will I return for another go at it? Probably. Hopefully the hiccups we experienced were just a fluke. read more

It was one of those nights that I wasn't sure what I wanted for dinner. We walked around for a few minutes (really cold outside) and decided to come here for dinner. I have been to this place many times before they changed ownership. I found that this place still had its really cool laid back trendy atmosphere. They had a very nice crowd. There were some changes but it was all good. At first I really was not impressed with their menu but since we were already seated we decided to stay. We ordered their fish and chips which consisted of a generous portion of hot crispy crunchy battered codfish with shoe string french fries. Their pan fried salmon that was cooked absolutely perfectly (medium by my request) with the mustard and sauce on the side, plus their Guinness steak pie. It looked like a deconstructed pot pie. A big bowl of scrumptious chunks of steak in a delicious sauce covered with a flaky pastry crust with mashed potatoes and peas on the side. Terrible Service! Homophobic AND/OR racist experience. On March 17, 2021, my husband AND I were trying to enjoy a St. Patrick's Day dinner at the Skillman restaurant. The greeting was Okay and we immediately ordered some drinks. Five minutes later the treatment was completely different and rude. The server and probably all the rest of the staff were trying to hide and avoid eye contact with us. In the beginning, we asked about the food menu but as time passed we were not able to order anything because nobody attended us. We had a weird feeling and felt some type of racism way since it was early and the restaurant was not busy at all. In fact, we were the first table inside and they didn't have more than 3 tables outside; therefore, there's no reason to say that everybody was busy and forget about us. After more than 40 minutes of trying to order some food, I was trying to pay my check because we were tired of waiting for the service. We already had finished with our drinks. By this time, a 7-top table walked-in, and 2 smaller tables were sat inside. The atmosphere changed immediately as I had to go to the bar to close my check. I noticed that the table next to us ordered, got their food and the service was very different from ours (Walked-in 20 minutes after us). We really felt invisible and discriminated against. When the server saw me, he just turned around and ignored me, again! The treatment was negligible. We felt uncomfortable and upset that this happened in our own neighborhood. Even during the COVID pandemic, when people need to order food to be able to sit at a table and drink; they said nothing. A very unpleasant and triggering situation for me and my husband. This place used to be called "The Dog and the Duck" but it now has a name that seems more appropriate for a condo than a restaurant. It's trying very hard to be an "upscale" bar but the food just isn't good enough to justify the high prices. The best bang for your buck is the burger - while it's not the biggest I've ever seen, it's juicy, reasonably filling, and comes with a delicious side of fries. The fried green tomato appetizer is also good, too. My biggest beef is the cost of the entrees, which is steep considering how small they are (Note: I've only come here for dinner). The burger is the only one that fills you up, whereas everything else is served on deceptively big plates so that you don't notice how little you're actually getting. Small portions might suit a French or gourmet restaurant but not a casual neighborhood pub like this. For example, the scallop dish is tasty but extremely small and overpriced - the size is more like an appetizer than a $30 entree. The chicken under the brick is pretty good but again, there's not a lot of it. Frankly, I try not to go here if I'm very hungry - it will cost you an arm and leg just to feel full. From their bar menu, the buffalo chicken wings are probably one of the worst in NYC. Great chicken wings are usually found in bars, but not the Skillman. Here, they taste like Banquet frozen wings from Jack's 99 cents store. They are served drowning in hot sauce but you can tell they are skinny and dry underneath. I ordered them once and had to force myself to finish them. Never again - total waste of money. So if you must come here, stick with the burger. That's the only meal that's worth it in terms of value and taste. read more

Seamless Reviews are down, so I'm leaving this review here. I ordered a delivery of salmon caesar salad with a side of avocado, and mac and cheese. The avocado was as hard as a rock, barely ripe, and $3. The mac and cheese was just macaroni pasta with mixed shredded cheese sprinkled on and in it. It wasn't remotely worth the $12 with tax. However, the salmon was prepared beautifully, and the caesar was delicious although a small portion, again, for $12 just for the lettuce and sauce. I've asked for a refund for the avocado from seamless, but I really think that their menu is completely overpriced and inconsistent. I don't really think I'll be ordering from them again unless in a pinch. read more
