I had my building Super inspect the job before before Chris got here so I already knew exactly what needed to be done and approximately what the job should cost. We worked with Chris to replace an outdated water heater, and had a positive experience. He was very approachable, took time to educate us about the pros and cons of the options we were considering. He communicated clearly and when we decided to move forward with the project, he was prompt, attentive to details, and true to his estimate. Two weeks into our new water heater and all is fine. We would work with him again. One thing to be aware of is that he requires a fee when visiting the first time, and then this fee is deducted from the final bill if you decide to move forward working together. Put out a bit for replacing some corroded shut-off valves under our sink. Chris was super responsive delivering a clear quote quickly and arriving just a few hours later on a Saturday night. Almost all my reviews I've written on Yelp have been 5 stars because I am never compelled enough to write a bad review... until now. I would choose 0 stars if u could but the lowest is 1 star. I used the Yelp function to get quotes to run waterlines to my ovens and fridge. I had about 10 companies show up throughout the day to give estimates. Chris was the last one for the day and we went through all the work I needed for an estimate. He assumed that he was there to do work immediately and I told him no, I wanted an estimate for everything I needed finished (including waterline to backyard, sump pump, among other things). He said it costs $225 for the time he spent looking at the work to write an estimate. I told him that any fees should be disclosed to customers up front and he said "well you didn't ask." He admitted that his office made a mistake by not telling me and refused to leave until I paid him for the time and gas he spent (he hasn't even given me an estimate for the full work yet). He asked me whether I go into a store and assume a bag of chips is free. I said no, because the price is published for me to see. He kept saying that it's my responsibility to ask about any fees and that nothing in America is free. My view is that prices should be transparent and told to customers in order for an agreement to be made. I've been renovating my home for 1.5 years and have gotten many estimates for free. Any company that charges a fee for an estimate has informed me of it before they came out. Except for Chris. It is not my fault that his office made a mistake and didn't inform me of a fee beforehand. He became increasingly loud and refused to leave unless I paid him so we both called the police. The police said he shouldn't assume that I knew about his fees and that he should've been upfront but at the same time I also shouldn't assume there was no fee and should've asked. We wasted about an hour arguing about the fee.. I don't understand Chris's rationale for fighting for $225 because a bad yelp review will only cause his business harm. I ended up giving him $125, which is more than halfway on my part. As a business owner, Chris should reevaluate the way he addresses disputes. Not only will I never hire him but nWas it worth this bad yelp review for the $125? read more

I am in the middle of a total basement demolition and renovation in my 100-year-old row house. The plumbing inside the walls and the drain pipe in the cement ground for a small shower were an ancient mess. I hired Chris from Intrepidus to work with my contractor to reconfigure various pipes so they would be nicely aligned and tidy before the drywall goes up. In particular Chris completely re-routed the water supply lines and installed the shower rough-in valve and the shower pan base. Chris problem-solved some issues with the valve and with the leveling and stability of the shower pan. He worked well with my contractor. His rates were reasonable. A pressure valve on our boiler tripped, which resulted in a couple of inches of water pouring out onto our cellar floor. I was able to close down the intake valve myself, stopping the flow, but now our furnace was disabled and that pressure valve needed to be replaced. After talking it through with them on a 2 am call, we agreed that with the situation stabilized, repairing the furnace could wait until the next day. He arrived on time and was very knowledgeable and efficient and after finishing the repair, suggested a couple of possible upgrades to our system that could wait until the weather was warm enough to shut down the furnace. A few months ago, we had the boiler system in the house break and not deliver heat properly. Chris was timely, and explained every step of the way what he was doing and why he was doing it. The job became a rather large one as we discovered the issues with the boiler system, needing a full drain and changing of the bleeder valves through the whole house. Every time we made a change to the plan that would cost more, Chris was sure to inform me and make sure that was what we wanted to move forward with. I told him to fix it well once so I didn't need him again - several months later, my heat is working better than ever. Considering the initial quote he gave me, and how big the project had ballooned to, he even knocked a little bit off of the final total at the end.
