BLUF: Knowledgeable, straightforward, efficient, courteous, expensive. A part in our boiler system was starting to go bad, occasionally making sharp noises and leaking lubricating oil. We used Yelp's Projects feature to look for contractors to help us resolve this situation. I added a picture of the part making unusual noises to my Yelp project request to provide some detail about the situation. Tom's Plumbing & Heating Services responded first. From my photo, Justin identified my malfunctioning part as the circulator pump, and after a few questions confirming that nothing else was wrong, Justin recommended that the circulator pump be replaced. He provided two options for circulator pumps, along with web links and total costs for each option, and a web link to my existing circulator pump for reference. I selected a pump with horsepower equivalent to my existing pump. The cost of all parts that Justin referenced were roughly equivalent on Amazon.com. Other vendors requested a complete picture of the boiler system, or had initial consultation fees. The service visit totaled roughly 90 minutes. In that time, Justin: - Replaced the boiler drain valve because it hasn't been used in many years and no longer worked - Drained my boiler - Installed the new circulator pump - Bled (i.e., removed air from) most of my radiators. Justin emphasized the importance of bleeding the radiators, as air in the system reduces the boiler's efficiency. - Demonstrated how to override the water pressure regulator in case of insufficient system pressure. - Pointed out other potential points of failure to monitor in the boiler system -- the water pressure regulator and expansion tank. I called Tom for a steam radiator valve replacement. My call was answered immediately and appointment was scheduled with no problem. On the day of the appointment time but he called to notify me that he was running late. This was not a problem for me but I was glad that he called so I didn't have to wait for him. The job was in a confined radiator box and Tom completed the job in 2 hrs. It would have taken less time but he brought the wrong valve. The replacement valve was not the standard type. Overall Tom did a nice job. He cleaned up and made sure there was no steam leak before he left. My only problem with Tom is his follow up on paperwork. When my shower started putting out only boiling hot water with no way to adjust it from the handle I suspected my shower cartridge (The piece behind the handle that controls water pressure and temp) had gone bad. Having experience changing them before I took a crack at my Kohler shower fixture. After an evening of trying just to remove the shower handle and bonnet that wouldn't budge I knew something was off and I didn't want to apply unnecessary torque potentially cracking a pipe or worse behind the wall. Time to call a pro... I put the word out on Yelp and Tom's was the first to respond (within 20 min). He communicated over text with a quick estimate and availability. A few texts back and forth gave me a good feeling so I scheduled for the next day. I was really impressed with their efficiency and communication, while the 3 other plumbers all responded with a "give me a call" (ain't no one got time for that) Tom's Plumbing and Heating Services was hustling! True to form they showed up at 10am (right at the start of the 10am-12pm window) got started right away. I felt relieved and concerned that he also struggled a bit to remove then handle/bonnet - the reason was poor initial installation. A knucklehead tightened and skewed the piece on incorrectly. Once removed it was determined that the replacement shower cartridge I bought (not being able to see through walls I bought what goes with the current model, mine was an older one). He tried to fix the existing one, but to no avail. He went to try to get the part locally, but only one half (this model has two pieces instead of most that have one cartridge). Tried to see if installing that would fix the issue but it needed the other half because water was still not adjustable. He ordered it and said he would come back when it was in. He got the part the next day, came to install the following morning and got everything back up and running perfectly. The price was on target with the original quote, but extra to cover the unexpectedly purchased parts. This was a fantastic experience where it pays to have straightforwardness, experience and efficiency doing a job - especially valuable traits when it comes to plumbing. Called Tom for a toilet problem I couldn't fix. Based on reviews here I chose to wait for him to return from vacation (from which he texted me an immediate response). I'm glad I did... When he came, he ran through standard unclogging steps. The house is VERY old and and we investigated further he kept me completely appraised and even educated of what was going ion, what he suspected, and where it could be a bigger problem (and more money), asking if it were worth it (which it was for me), and quoting me along the way to less than I expected it to be. He ended up having to trace pipes through ceilings and walls, cutting out section of old large lead drain pipe and replacing it - all without flooding the basement which we both expected might happen. AND identifying and removing a major drain clog. AND returning at night to complete the job after sourcing the parts we needed, all after he'd been there pretty much all day for what was expected to be a 1-hour job. All for a fair price where I think many guys would have simply given up. We spoke of his dad and mentor and I think his dad would be very proud of Tom and how he handled this one! I called at least 10 companies and Tom was the only one who picked up and was willing to come out the same day. Other companies either didn't pick up or wanted pictures of the pipes in the ceiling or some other excuses, but Tom picked up and came over quickly. Another heating pipe plumber could have changed pipes to make money, but Tom diagnosed the issue as being a boiler part that needed to be cleaned and he changed a steam valve that was leaking and everything is working perfectly now.
