Rolled up at 12:30 p.m., to get the smog and registration renewal, immediately two guys came out, hooked up the car, got us taken care of and out of there and under 5 minutes! I usually go to smog monkey, but was closer to this one and just wanted to get it done. I have read reviews about people saying that the guys here are rude, they're not rude at all! I told them how an acquaintance of mine works at the other smog place, and he jokingly, JOKINGLY said "well we're fast and rude around here!" Which was hilarious! He told us to have a great day, but I requested the rude exit comment!! Great place, fast, and efficient. $45 total for a smog and DMV renewal! (Minus the cost of your renewal). I found Instant Smog last minute because I did not realize I had to get a smog check on my car this year prior to getting it renewed. I drove up to one of the parking spaces for the smog and a staff member immediately came out to do the smog. They can also do the registration as well! The smog fee was $35 for regular light duty smog and $45 for heavy duty smog. The registration fee is $10. The price is more than what I am used to, but I like how they open at 7:30am and is close to my house. It took a total of 10 minutes for the smog to be finished. I love the convenience of Instant Smog and I would totally recommend it if you needed a smog and registration done asap. However, there are places that can do the same thing for possibly cheaper. Not sure if others are as quick and efficient though. read more

I have gone to this exact location for over a decade. All personal and business vehicles as I typically love the staff. This last time however I pulled up to the machine with it centered on my vehicle as I've done every time before. I wait for a young Asian male with glasses to come and great me and the first thing he says "nice parking job, the lines are over there". While at the end of the day it's not a big deal , that's not the way I want to be treated and talked to with condescending attitude. I would have moved no problem if approached differently so instead I asked for the employees name which he would not provide. So instead of just calling to talk to a manager it's now public. read more

What a joke of a business. They advertise that they are open until 4:00 pm on Saturday's. I arrived at 3:55, which was acknowledged by the employee, and he said he was closed. This is the second time that I have experienced this issue with this business. I will never go there again and I am advising others to do the same. I hate the time of year when it's time to register my car and I was not sure how it was going to work this year with the whole Pandemic and the DMV only taking appointments. But this place made it so freaking easy to get a smog and register your car all in one go! It also did not take them very long at all and maybe took only 10 minutes. It also was only $30 for their smog ! You do have to wait for your stickers in the mail, but they do give you a temporary registration paper to keep until then. Seriously impressed and ecstatic I was able to get my errand done all in one go and it was a Saturday! I def will be using this place moving forward for my yearly car registration! read more

Been going to the Los Altos location for 10+ years, always did the smog & registration, employees have always been polite & professional until the morning of August 18th, 2025. Arrived, was 3rd in line, we were waiting for the employees to setup. Male employee took the first car, the gal took the motorhome. A van pulled up, parked. First car was done, male employee motioned to the van & motioned to me that I'd be after the motorhome. Motorhome backed out straight into a parking spot, I waited to make sure he was in fact done, wasn't sure if the gal was ready for me just yet as the van was blocking my view. Gal then heads to the office, yanks open the door and yells at me that if I wanted a smog I NEEDED to pull up to a spot which I'm clearly aware of that. So, I pull up to her station, lined up to where she had her station, get out, I said Hi and she immediately yells again this time to move over motioning harshly. I didn't have much room with the van next to me. Explained nicely that I'll be taking my business elsewhere, which she snapped back & walked off. Zero customer service, gal was extremely grumpy. I rank convenience highly when I have to take care of mundane car tasks like the annual emissions test before renewing my car registration. This location off of Los Altos is incredibly convenient for me now that we live in Sparks, so I went here. There was no wait, and it literally took five minutes to run the test and pay for it. Perfect! I paid $30 for the test, plus the $10 fee to have them submit my renewal registration on my behalf and to pay for the DMV registration renewal ($85) there. Yes, I know all authorized emissions stations automatically send the Vehicle Inspection Report to the DMV. Yes, I know I can renew my vehicle without paying the $10 fee online or through a kiosk. There are cheaper ways to do this process, but I often prefer the easiest way. Sometimes I register online after having to reset my myDMV password because I've forgotten it from the year before. Sometimes I go to a place that has a kiosk and pay there. This year, I'm happy to pay a $10 fee to be lazy. I interacted with the technician for a total of five minutes, so I don't have a wealth of experience from which to draw to rate customer service. Nevertheless, he was friendly and competent and doing his job well even though it was a toasty summer day. read more

When a customer goes to a place called 'Instant Smog', they clearly are wanting fast service, Instant Smog did not disappoint - I was in and out in 3 minutes (give or take 30 seconds). Both techs were professional, friendly, and fast. Main tech assisting me was upfront about all costs and immediately informed me of any extra charges and the total DVM registration renewal fee prior to running my card. They did not try to up sale me on any service. Both techs were fully masked and both wore their masks properly. Tech that had to go into my car asked me to step out and minimized contact with me and my car as much as possible. (Very much appreciated) Smog was $30.00, for $10.00 extra they will pay your DMV registration fee - saving you even more time (a total no brainier!). Horrible first experience. I got there and 3 younger men came out and did not say ONE word to me. Note that it was my first time there and i don't know how to do smog checks. i got off my car and locked it and was making my way inside when those 3 younger men walk to my car and try to open it... ? I was like "oh sorry i don't know what to do here" and one boy was like "no worries can i get your keys". i gave it to him and they proceeded to do everything but did not talk to me whatsoever. I was so confused and lost. they finished and i payed and that was it. No conversation or any reassurance. Such a horrible first experience omg horrible horrible customer experience. read more

Been using this Instant smog for years for my personal and 11 fleet vehicles. Went to smog my 2019 Silverado 2500 diesel truck today and "Instant smog doesn't do diesel trucks" was the response, which I found really odd considering they did the smog on the same exact truck last year. After taking it to a diesel smog shop, I was notified that new vehicles don't require a smog until the 4th year after manufacture. That means that Instant Smog charged me to do a smog last year that I didn't actually need nor are they licensed to do. I will never trust this place again and am considering filing a complaint with the DMV. read more

I did not read all the reviews before going here and saw a decent rating, but not a high one. I called on the phone to ask a couple questions and could not understand the person because he had a thick accent, sounded like an Indian accent. I could tell he was getting annoyed by me asking him to repeat slowing 3 times and still I could not understand. I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and just drive down there. One other person was in front of me as I waited just a couple minutes. While waiting, I heard one man raising his voice to another employee. NOT good to do this in front of customers. Then, I heard him make a derogatory comment something about Californians and the rip-off prices there. That's when I got up and left. That's also not good. Now I see other reviews saying similar things. My advice is the business needs to understand to keep opinions to themselves if they want to increase business. I am from California like a LOT of people up here and don't appreciate the snide comments even though I no longer live there. I went for a smog check today at the Instant Smog #6 172 Los Altos Parkway, Sparks, Nevada 89436 . I was waving around the coupon from Jiffy Lube which is where I thought I was. They saw it and said nothing. I know I was ripped off. Instead of payibng $20, it cost me $30. I told them I had gone to the wrong place, didn't matter, business first, customers don't count. It was very calculated and deliberate because I senset they knew I was at the wrong place. Talking to the manager (regional) made no difference. It was a good lesson for me to learn. Never trust independent business dealers as the $$s are more important than the goodwill clients can spread around. read more

PRO: very fast. In-and-out in 5 minutes. CONS: Their computer messed up my car's onboard computer. The gas gauge stopped working and got error codes on Fuel/Air ratio as soon as I felt the parking lot. It'll likely cost me $100-$500 to get it repaired. read more

I work near here and needed to get my car smogged and renew my registration as it was due in two days. I called ahead of time and asked if if I had it smogged and re-newed there if it would still be registered in time with the dmv even though my stickers in my license plate would be expired. The person who answered was very friendly and explained to me that it definitely would be and that as long as my address was current with doc thst I would receive the stickers in the mail between 2-5 business days. After I hung up, I realized that I forgot the little reminder card from dmv that we all frown upon every year so I called back and the same gentleman answered and told me not to worry and that the reminder card is not needed to know the exact amt. I'm glad he didn't get annoyed at my questions! When I arrived the service was quick and the two gentlemen working were friendly and courteous. I was provided with both receipts of the smog service and my fee for the dmv. I also appreciate the timeframes given to me as well. I'll be back next year. read more

I was seen in 5 minutes, only because the technician was busy with another customer, and out of there in another 5. It probably helped that I had a Prius. The other customer, with a massive pickup truck (that probably gets 5 miles/gallon), had been there before me was still there when I left. The technician (with an impressive beard) that helped me was very friendly, courteous, and fast! He even gave me instructions to make my time at the DMV getting a registration easier.
