Don't go here. The service we got was so bad I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Go to Koreatown in Manhattan. It will be worth it. We went their for our anniversary. First, they misquoted our time. We got there at 9:00 and said we would eat by 10:30. We didn't sit until 11:00 and we didn't get an apology or anything else. We sat down and our server spoke to us once, took the order, then spoke to us one more time asking if I wanted another drink. The appetizers were fine but she came up and was very unfriendly when preparing the food at the table. We were then asked to finish cooking it ourselves. My girlfriend and I were disappointed to say the least. We were never asked for dessert and they seemed to be just rushing us out. 20% tip is included which was outrageous given our service. Let's be honest here. If you read the reviews, you'll see a trend between the rave reviews and negative reviews. As an Asian American, this place is a bastardized Korean BBQ restaurant. It's the equivalent of those fast food Chinese takeout places to real Chinese food. This place is as Korean as fortune cookies is Chinese. I do not recommend this place if you want real Korean food. You won't be grilling/bbq-ing your own meats here. The portions are tiny and waiters do not understand how to grill. The meats are not browned and there is no flavor except salt. The banchans here are close to disgusting. Usually I love the radish kimchi and here, it tastes like soy sauce. The regular kimchi here is made from lettuce and not cabbage which means it's bitter and nowhere near resembles any type of kimchi. There is no fermentation involved. You can't slap hot pepper flakes and soy sauce on some greens and call it kimchi. Stop insulting Korean food. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I've had non-cabbage kimchi before. I've been served Chinese vegetable kimchi before and it was delicious. I've made my own kimchi before and it was delicious. It's very easy to make. But to make such a bastardized version of kimchi and serve it here is to make it palatable for individuals who are not familiar with Korean flavors. This is the same as the takeout Chinese restaurants. The Korean fried chicken here was very disappointing. There is no signature crispy crust that Korean fried chicken usually has. The fried layer is soggy and the sauce is straight up gochujang. Once again, you can't just slap one Korean ingredient on something and call it Korean food. For the price, just go to K-town in Manhattan and get real Korean food. Stop being cheated here. If you've ever been to a Korean BBQ restaurant in Korea Town you may just ask yourself, "why am I paying this much for incredibly mediocre food?" The service was good and waitstaff was very friendly but it's a pretty hard pill to swallow to pay $30 to watch someone burn 13 shrimp right before your very eyes. Why did I just pay $15 for 7 dumplings that are in no way better than a frozen gyoza I could make at home? Ambience is great and I bet the Karaoke is fun too but also way overpriced compared to what you can find elsewhere in the city. Tried it twice and did not like the food or drinks either time. Had a bloody mary the first time. Had trouble finishing it, and that's very unusual for me -- with bloody marys and drinks in general. Not sure what was wrong exactly, but it just didn't taste right. We had the bulgogi that time. It wasn't terrible. I'm very familiar with Korean food, both K-Town casual and more upscale menus, and this was not even close to par. Especially not at that price tag. Second time we came I ordered another cocktail from the specials menu that looked interesting. It was a vodka drink -- can't remember all the ingredients, but it had seaweed as a garnish and sounded savory. I usually like those types of drinks, but again I had trouble drinking it. Couldn't get it down until after my ice had melted a bit. Then the bossam came out (((shudders))). I took one bite and literally chewed nothing but cold, gelatinous fat for what felt like 5 minutes, and then had to fight with my gag reflex in order to get it down. Probably thinking I was overreacting, my boyfriend tried a piece too and had the exact same reaction. We sent it back, explaining that it was hard, tough, gelatinous, cold, and basically all fat, and we could not eat it. I'm really disappointed in my last experience at Insa but not for a reason I'd have ever expected. I went for a friend's birthday dinner. We ordered a ton of food and a fair number of cocktails. Service and food were great. While we were still eating our dinner, we were suddenly asked to move to the bar area to finish our meal because another reservation was coming in and they needed the table. We had been there about 1 hour and 45 min, but we had just ordered another round of drinks at that point and hadn't finished our mains or ordered dessert. That said, there were several other tables that had arrived there before us and were still seated and were not being asked to move. I was pretty offended by the request, but I politely asked the waiter to figure out another solution because we were celebrating a birthday and were't ready to give up the table. Important to note -we were eating at a normal pace (in line with how quickly we were served) and were not just squatting so we could chit chat. They allowed us to stay in our seats until we finished our dessert, but as we did, I watched the restaurant practically empty out. No one was coming for our table. I have no reason to believe it was actually needed. My suspicion is that we were asked to move because we were a table of 40 somethings and everyone else in the restaurant was younger. I can't imagine what other reason there would be other than that one - but I hope I'm wrong. For the rest of the meal, it was on my mind and I felt like we should be rushing to leave. My experience was the opposite of most other reviewers. I found the service to be great, attentive without feeling overbearing. I did not have similar warm feelings for the food. We shared four dishes at the table. The non-BBQ dishes were OK. The BBQ dishes left a lot to be desired. The portions were very small and the waited who was nice enough to cook did a good job with the seafood but the meat was way over. I can't really blame him though. The four pieces were so tiny anything longer than 10 seconds on the grill would overcook it. Our first waiter was nice but then he left and we had different waiter and waitresses each time. The waiter that took our order didn't put some certain orders in. When asking our next waitress if our missing drink and food was coming out, she replied as if it came out already and that we lied or something. Like "Are you sure this isn't your second drink?" I just finished eating there and the food is very, very good, a bit of complexity in the flavor combos but no heat, all around zing and pop but no bite and ouch, meaning absolutely perfect for me. IThe very best corn dog ever! But the service was not what it should be, it took forever to get a glass of water and they do the thing of grabbing your plate when you are not done and then the cocktails came out way after the food. Sorry but the food is simply not authentic Korean. Great service and extremely attentive staff. They treated the Korean culture very well and you can order in Korean and their understanding was seamless. But the lack of authenticity was overbearing. Don't order stews or soups as they are more Brooklyn fusion than Korean, maybe that's why it's so expensive. The food here was good, the service was polite and professional, and the atmosphere and ambience were nice. While the food quality was good, the portions were disappointingly small. We requested rice, and this may be the only Korean restaurant I've ever been to where the rice bowl wasn't full, but only half full. Our party ordered a $29 order of samgyupsal (pork belly) and were very disappointed to find that the order consisted of three (!) slices, of which a notable portion was just fat. To be honest, I felt cheated when I saw the plate brought out. While the servers/waitstaff were polite and nice, the lack of attention--given and altogether available--greatly diminished our experience. Because servers are often standing tableside to cook customers' orders, they are too preoccupied to attend to other tables. Their effort was visible and appreciated. I am not sure if this is a common problem here, or if the restaurant was just understaffed when we went. Regardless, I want to emphasize: the service was polite and attentive, but the problem I am describing is a managerial/logistical one. For the scale and size of the operation, there needed to have been a few more bodies on the floor bussing tables, taking orders, etc. We waited an unusually long time between being seated and ordering, as well as between asking for a check and receiving one, but only because all the other servers were busy or running food. So I have to say I was impressed here. I am not familiar with Korean cuisine so I asked our waiter "Wilson" for some recommendations. We had "Gogi Mandu" steamed dumplings that were outstanding, "Yangnyum Galbi" short ribs that Trini grilled right in front of us and melted in my mouth, "Japchae" sweet potato noodles were amazing. I went to Insa to celebrate a milestone birthday with a small group of friends. The food was good and the karaoke was fun! However, every single person who works there from the waiters to the busboys both in the restaurant and karaoke room is soooooo rude and angry. They are heartless impatient zombies who can't even crack a smile. It was crazy! It's really unfortunate that the staff is so terrible. Also, when I made my reservation I requested a specific thematic karaoke room as per the hostesses suggestion and I bought decorations etc to match the theme. Not what I expected after hearing the Bon Appetite podcast episode that featured the owner/chef in terms of the atmosphere, but the food we had was solid. The bartenders knew their sake, so bonus points for that. The one downside is that the menu is extensive which to us typically means small plates, but the portions were huge (hence the high prices). This review is mainly for the karaoke. The karaoke room was nice and clean, but SO overpriced! We were in the big room (couldn't downsize) and ended up paying ~$800 for 3 hours of singing and a couple of pitchers of beer. They bill it as $160/hr but with tax and fixed 20% gratuity, it gets expensive quickly. You can get better deals elsewhere. I won't be singing here again... The restaurant was delicious. Korean food is one of my favorites and I was excited to try a Korean restaurant in BK. Came here for a Friday night dinner and had a good time. In order to be seated make sure your whole group is with you. Just know you can get your name down, but they won't seat you. But don't despair. The bar in the back is the perfect waiting spot to get a drink and wait. Nice selection of wine, cocktails and beer. It did not take long to get a table which was surprising but great. There is a vast option of meats and dishes to choose from. We mostly got meat dishes and one vegetarian dish. You have the option of grilling everything on your own or you can do it yourself. We had someone grill for us and they were very nice, attentive and cooked the food pretty good. At one point the A/C started leaking on a few of us and he moved us to another table and made sure we were comped desert for the trouble. The mix of meats we got were good but honestly not memorable. It might be the fact that, this place, and Korean bbq overall is expensive and with that price tag, you are looking for something amazing! If you are to order anything get the Beosut Modeum (mushroom platter) and the Ojingeo & Nakji (squid and octopus). Highly recommend. We got three other meats that were honestly not memorable for me. The service was great, and they always made sure the table was filled with sides and lettuce. From their drink menu, get the Mai Tai. If you are into tiki drinks, this is a must. Ladies. Gentlemen. Insa is fabulous. Here's my breakdown: Ambience/Design (5 stars): This is one of the most beautifully designed and curated restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It's tough for a place to be both refined and warm/inviting, but Insa definitely pulls that off. Drinks (5 stars): Despite the somewhat caricature-y Asian names, the cocktails are subtle, delicious, and interesting. I would highly recommend the K-Town Old Fashioned, Silk Punch, and Dragon King. Oh, and they have their soju distilled in Brooklyn - that stuff is delightful. Service (3.5 stars): Service could use work, but it's been improving with every visit. At first, it seemed as though the wait staff weren't able to discern between certain dishes while ordering. Maybe it's just me, but I like be a tad understanding re: service at a brand new restaurant. I'd love to bring my service rating to a 5, and I'm confident Insa will make that happen soon enough. Karaoke (1,000 stars): I am a Karaoke aficionado. I used to prefer stage karaoke because a lot of the room-based karaoke places in K-town were a little grimy and smelly despite the high cost. But, I am now a changed woman. The karaoke systems themselves are stellar - the backing tracks are real, and the reverb on the mics makes everyone sound like a superstar diva. The themes are fun, the sound is great, and the rooms are clean and perfect. Food (4.5 stars): I'm a little confused by the content of some of the negative reviews, here. Of course taste and authenticity are subjective, but quality/freshness is certainly not. I should preface by saying that I am Korean (a pretty "bad" one though, whatever that means), and have consumed a great deal of the food of my people throughout my life. This doesn't make me an expert, but I know what I like, and I know when food is fresh and of high-quality. Here are my ratings of the dishes I've had, so far: Gogi Mandu (5 stars) - This meat dumpling was fried to perfection, seasoned wonderfully, and could not have been tastier. Yache Mandu (5 stars) - The vegetarian version of their Mandu is equally delightful. It has mixed vegetables and a little bit of kimchi. I would recommend getting this fried. Insa Fried Chicken (3.5 stars) - I've had the fried chicken a couple of times now, and each time it's been a bit salty. However, the actual chicken is fried beautifully with a crispy outside and an incredibly tender and moist inside. Yuk Hwe (5 stars) - I had never had this Korean beef tartare before coming to Insa, so I don't really have a frame of reference. But this is freaking delicious, everyone. So beefy, with little bits of Asian pear to offset the meatiness. I've had this all three times I've been to Insa. Ugh. Galbi (4 stars) - This is actually the most delicious galbi I've ever had, but, I gave it four stars instead of five because of the price. But for special occasions, I think it's totally worth it. Chadolbaegi (4 stars) - I never had Chadolbaegi (thinly sliced brisket) made on the grill before. This is unseasoned, and requires that the beef be of great quality, which it was. Again, the docked star is for the price. Beosut Modeum (5 stars) - Oh my goodness. I never knew mushrooms could be so remarkable. With a nice assortment of shrooms thrown on the grill, any fungus fan would be thrilled by the quality and intense flavors from this dish. Grilled Branzino (5 stars) - BOMB. SO GOOD. Moist, flaky, flavorful. Perfection. Get it. Kimchi Jjigae (5 stars) - I'm really into this kimchi stew. We could date. It may be a bit milder than what some are used to (this stew is usually made with overly ripe kimchi, and is therefore often beautifully intense and funky). It has a lovely balance between the tanginess and spiciness from the kimchi, and meatiness from the pork. I will probably order this every time I go to Insa. Soondubu (5 stars) - This is my favorite silky tofu stew I've ever had. In most restaurants, there is so much fat and oil and red pepper flakes in this dish (not a bad thing, at all). But at Insa, the flavors are more delicate (you can actually taste the seafood in the broth), and the shellfish are perfectly cooked. Galbijjim (4 stars) - This beef stew is amazing. Perhaps best for a special occasion due to cost. All in all, Insa make me super happy. I think it's hard to be a different kind of Korean restaurant when everyone's frame of reference is really this singular and uniform style of cooking tasted in K-town. It may be helpful to frame your Insa dining through the lens of Brooklyn's brand (ew, I know, but bear with me), where craft and quality reign supreme. I have nothing against the old style of Korean food (I love it, in fact), but I see nothing wrong with doing something a little different. I'm obsessed. I guess if you are looking for a good ambience and good drinks and bad Korean food this place is ok. I give them 2 stars for ambience and Karaoke. But seriously those of you who rarely had Korean food....please do not think this place is a representation of good Korean food. It is certainly more chic and modern than most Korean place you will go in flushing and K town but the food really sucks!!! There is absolutely no BBQ experience because they did not install the proper ventilation so they try to finish cooking asap and close the hear so you are left eating cold meat throughout. (That is never how it is supposed to be done!!) The price of bbq is as expensive as Ktown but the meat is really low quality. I got a over priced Soon tofu which is a classic Korean tofu soup and they had put doenjang in it. Yuk! which is equivalent to serving a chicken pot pie with marinara sauce in it. I am all for fusion dish and creativity but you have to tell me before I am going to get a non soon tofu. I had sent the food back and they told me that is normally how it is done. Either they hired non Korean chef who has no clue or they are lying! Don't even get me started on service. Everyone was confused and people do not know what anything was or how to pronounce anything. Which is ok because it just opened and they hired non Koreans. But they kept getting our orders wrong and never checked on us which is not a good service anywhere in the world. I made a reservation for dinner + karaoke two months in advance. I don't normally buy into the hype of new restaurants with long waitlists, but I was pretty interested in this place. A Korean restaurant with karaoke in super hip Brooklyn? I'd happily make the trek down here to eat with friends who live in the neighborhood, rather than constantly meeting in the middle in Manhattan K-town. But that's not going to happen, because this whole experience was a huge disappointment. The food is actually excellent (despite the portion size being small), but the entire experience was colored by poor management of the restaurant. I eat a lot of Korean food. I know what things are called. The menu items are written in romanized Korean. So why was it so hard to order things by their Korean name? Despite not being Korean herself, I was expecting that our waitress would understand the names of Korean dishes we wanted to order, because she works at a Korean restaurant. The only way we managed to order anything was by reading the English description underneath. Why would you not train your waitstaff to understand the Korean names of dishes? Oh, because the ownership is not actually expecting Korean people or people who eat Korean food on the regular to show up. Gotcha. That's why you opened a restaurant up in Hip Brooklyn. We ordered samgyupsal, and the sesame oil with the rock salt was noticeably missing. When we inquired about it, the man who stepped in to grill our meat for us told us there was salt in one of the other sauces. Nope. That's not what you eat with samgyupsal. It would have been perfectly reasonable for him to say, "Oh, I can bring you some of that, but you should try it with this other sauce, which we prepared specially for the pork belly." I'm interested in trying new things when they've been thoughtfully put together, but that wasn't the case here. The sesame oil with rock salt was only available upon request. No refills on banchan. The waitstaff was bewildered when we asked, we had to ask repeatedly, and they came back with banchan for one side of the table, and an entire plate of lettuce long after we'd finished grilling the meat. The waitstaff were not trained that banchan is supposed to be refilled upon request. I don't need to eat Korean food served by Koreans. However, this was an incredibly expensive dinner served by staff with no understanding of Korean cultural norms. Ganso, which is also in Brooklyn, proves that this does not have to be the case! Ganso serves Japanese food, doesn't have Japanese waitstaff, and still respects the culture they are presenting. It comes down to training your servers to represent the culture you are presenting to your customers, which the owners appeared to not spend time doing. The transition between dinner and karaoke was really awkward. The people serving us in the restaurant ignored us after we paid our bill, and there wasn't any communication about when our karaoke room would be ready. We figured that we should wait in the bar for our room to be available, again, with no one communicating anything to us. At the time of our karaoke reservation, I approached the hostess again, mentioned our karaoke reservation, and she said there was still a group in there, and that needed to get them to pay, and then clean the room for us. When the big group finally left fifteen minutes later, I again approached the podium, and she said that they just left, and that they needed to get the room in order. Ten minutes later, she saw me approaching, and left the podium in advance. I waited a few minutes, and a different host appeared, and the original hostess did not return. I then had to explain the situation to him again, and he went to go talk to her. We finally got into the room 30 minutes after our reservation, were promised by the hostess that we'd get our original 2 hour reserved time slot, only to be approached an hour and thirty minutes after we'd begun, to tell us that our reservation was coming to an end, and we needed to start packing up and leaving. Again, we had to explain to one of the employees exactly what happened, and it took about five minutes of explanation to get everything sorted (five minutes I could have been singing Alanis Morissette, FYI). Look Insa, if you're going to charge really high prices, you'd better have your shit together. There was literally nothing that we did here that we couldn't have done in K-town with less stress and frustration, and for less money. It's a shame that the whole operation is so poorly managed, because the food is actually quite good! There is nothing about this business that is worth the two month reservation in advance. If you want the real Korean food/karaoke experience, there are plenty of places that fit the bill in K-Town or Flushing. Don't waste your hard earned dollars here. read more

I have been here easily a half dozen times since it opened and I love it. The food is fantastic--particularly the seafood pancake, which is my favorite thing on the menu--and the wait staff is lovely and courteous. Went to Insa with my staff and had the best time ever! The food was great, drinks were really yummy, and the service was seamless. We enjoyed two hours of Karaoke post-feast, and i can't remember having so much fun in the past years! I cannot wait to go back again to eat, drink and be merry! Fun! Fun! Fun! read more

I've been here four times now and it has always been a fantastic meal and experience. The house cocktails are outstanding. I've had the Jade Emperor and tried their special Soju Bloody Mary for brunch. I've had the beef brisket on the table grill twice, the Bi Bim Bap, and recently had the fried chicken, which was fantastic. The banchan are always fresh and delicious and you never get exactly the same things twice, which is always a nice surprise. Also recommended are the kimchi dumplings. Service is super-friendly and efficient, and they are one of the new wave of restaurants that pay their waiters a living wage to you don't have to tip. I also got a group together for a karaoke night back in January and it was a big success. Love this place. read more

Hands-down the best new restaurant I've experienced in Park Slope/Gowanus in years. Dishes were delicious and well thought out - very traditional Korean influences with a playful modern twist. We got the yuk hwe (perfection!) and the pork belly, which was rich and satisfying and balanced well with the most addictive kimchi. The rice cakes were a revelation though - perfectly crispy on the outside, served with yummy fish cakes, veggies, and an intense tomato sauce. Kind of mind-blowing. Service was great - friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. And the space is beautiful - spacious with clean rounded lines, like being in the hull of a ship, with a shiny open kitchen. And the lighted cherry tree in the bar is a magical touch! Perfect spot for a date, family dinner, or just drinks at the bar. Oh and they have karaoke too! I haven't been on Yelp in a long time because my grandson moved to Connecticut last year and I haven't been able to go out to these great new places. But now he's back because he broke up with his girlfriend which is fine with me. So we went for Korean food! How exotic! My father was in the Korean War and if he was alive he wouldn't like this so much. But it was so very good. Interestingly it is in Gowanus. When I was a girl we we wouldn't cross the canal to this area because all the workman would whistle at us and chase us down the street. But this place was fantastic. The chicken wings were out of this world and not the kind that you get when you go to a friends party. And strangely enough they don't allow tipping. Can you get that? It's crazy. I was concerned because they bartender was a young lady (but plenty of young ladies are bartenders now, I know). But she said she liked it because she always knew how much money she'd make. It's funny. Although she hand't heard of a whiskey sour, but I showed her. I hope I can go here again with my grandson soon. I give it 4.5 thumbs up out of a scale of 5 thumbs. read more
