I was in the mood for some Korean short ribs (Galbi) so I decided to try this place out. UberEats has a deal buy 1 get 1 free on spicy pork bowls, so I decided to try it along with a Galbi box. The spicy pork bowl was delicious and filling. The perfect amount of spice that wasn't overpowering and the cilantro was a great addition. Now the Galbi was a big let down for me. For one they removed it from the bone, and the meat was so chewy. The flavor was ok, but I couldn't enjoy it due to me chewing so much. The sides were good though. I discovered this place right before the pandemic hit NYC, around the end of February and beginning of March. I haven't been back since, but I will be returning to the area since school has started back up for me and intend to visit this place and update my review with their post-quarantine measures. To start off with, I absolutely fell in love with the food and the owner is the sweetest lady. She's very kind and made conversation with me before I headed out. I had chosen to dine in for a classic sundubu-jigae on a cold day in February. She cooks everything herself which is incredible. She takes good care to make sure your food is well prepared and hot when you get it. It's such a wonderfully homemade taste that I have been missing throughout the quarantine. Prior to the pandemic, it was a self ordering system. There were two tablets to order from, and a fridge nearby to grab your prepaid drink. There was one large communal table with seating along with a repurposed pellegrino box for utensils and napkins. Talk about environmentally conscious, we love that. There were also two chairs on the side, I assume for customers waiting for their to go orders. Anyway, I love the food from here, it's a little on the pricier side since it's all homemade dishes but I'm also a broke college student lol so keep that in mind. Tiger Box makes homey, quality Korean food with some Mexican fusion. While the location on Park is a little out there, I enjoy the walk for my pick up and they do have delivery. My review is only for pick up. My family swears by the seafood pancake/paijun. We order two pancakes for four of us, otherwise we will fight. They always have a lot of seafood in them (shrimp and octopus), scallions, and are undersalted so you can dip them liberally into the soy sauce. (We throw them into a frying pan to crisp back up when we get home for maximum tastiness, a toaster over works too!) We also love the japchae (sweet potato noodles) which are loaded with vegetables and beef and are sooo good. The bimbimbap is my summer entree go-to, as it's loaded with veggies and is a lighter, refreshing dish. Bimbimbap comes with go chu hang on the side so you can mix in as much spice as you like. Hubs likes the galbi bowl (beef short rib) over the kimchi fried rice. I also love the soon dou bou stew, but I prefer eating it in the winter since it's spicy and hot and soupy. I think the prices are fair for the quantity and quality. Usually when I order ahead, my food is ready to go at pick up. This last run they needed an extra 10 minutes. There's that saying about some restaurants, "a hole in the wall", right? That's usually referring to the appearance of the restaurant, which rarely plays a part in the experience and the food itself (based on my experience, anyway). Tiger Box is totally a hole in the wall. It's small, not fancy at all, not a bunch of hype and frills, but the experience....man, the experience. I arrived to be welcomed by the owner, Sy (spellcheck, please). She.is.phenomenal. We chatted for a bit before I ordered. There's no seating inside, so I went outside to sit and wait for my food. I had no idea what I was in store for. I tried several different dishes. The spicy pork bowl being one of them. Rice and pork, marinated in gochujang, ginger and other flavorful components, really got me in my feelings almost instantly. You taste the warmth, and the experience, and the love right away. I also tried the kimchi jjigae, which is a hot stew with kimchi, pork, onions, green onions, rice, and more. I'd say this was one of the most special dishes. The kimchi soaking in that stew, the tofu absorbing all of those flavors....ugh. Cooking is an art. This was cooking from a deeply rooted cultural background. The history was in every bite. I also tried the spicy pork ssam wraps, which were delightful. More of that yummy spicy pork, but with the freshness of the lettuce. Such a bright, Spring-y dish! The seafood scallion pancakes were one of my faves! Savory pancakes, packed with flavor, and seafood! I also tried the steamed meat kimchi mandu, which appear as dumplings, but owner Sy says, "no, it's mandu". And listen, I wasn't about to argue with her! She KNOWS, ok?! The mandu was divine. They were stuffed with kimchi and pork. After speaking with Sy, I have so much more of an appreciation for kimchi. She says the process is tedious, that it takes time. The more steps you add to your kimchi, the better it tastes. The more flavor you develop. She says it's a lot of work, but that she doesn't regret it. The kimchi is a top seller because it's served in so many dishes. Sy is special. She really does love running Tiger Box. That is inspiring and you can taste her love in the food. In the throes of the ongoing Korean boom, there are few places to get authentic Korean food without being sucked into a pretentious experience-economy restaurant (looking at you, White Tiger) or a sleazy steakhouse chain, of which there are many examples. This place is real. The pickles are made in house, the owner (who is also the chef, and if you choose to dine in, the service) is a friendly, pleasant, and caring woman who told me during my first visit, "I am a Korean food evangelist," explaining her almost ritualistic to serving incredible food like this out of a hole-in-the-wall under the BQE. I didn't realize Woori was closed on Sunday''s so quickly checked google map to see that this was the closest Korean restaurant in the area, this place was a few blocks away. The photos are misleading. I don't know if maybe there's a change in ownership but the inside is definitely not meant for a sit down restaurant. Place looks like it got hit by a bomb, very dingy with wobbly tables. We had to order from the POS system ourselves from the iPad they set up in the front. I don't even know if they take cash. We did end up staying to eat, the guy working in the kitchen brought out the food which took awhile since they were prioritizing the delivery orders. While the food itself tasted ok, it wasn't worth what they were charging. I ordered the soondubu and fried kimchi dumplings. The soondubu while decent wasn't anything special, definitely not worth what they were charging, the portion of the rice that came with it was so meager. The kimchi dumpling was on the dense side, the skin of the wrapper wasn't crispy but dry. My friend got the pork ssam set that came with three random sides. Portion was on the small side and didn't come with rice like it stated on the menu. I think it would have been better if they served the lettuce on the side so you can make the ssam yourself to prevent the lettuce from getting soggy. What a great find! Coming from a Korean person, this place is legit. The food is homey, delicious, and no frills. It's just like it would be prepared in a Korean home, besides the fusion dishes, which have their own merit. We ordered for delivery the Kimchi Jjigae (Kimchi Stew) which is a quintessential Korean stew, and it was on-point in terms of flavor and ingredient ratio, which is hard to find. There's also two sides that come with it. We also got the steamed Beef & Kimchi Mandu which was solidly good. The best of the bunch might have been the Bulgogi "dosirak" Box. The bulgogi was tender and flavorful, and the sides were just as good, and they generously give 3 of them (kimchi pancake, fried mandu, and a egg fritter). Lastly, the Chicken Fried Rice dish was well-made too, not one of those fried rice dishes that's just rice. It had ample chicken and vegetables. Everything we ordered was thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered the bulgogi bibimbap (which is served cold, except for the bulgogi) for pickup. Some places serve it cold and others hot so I didn't mind but I do prefer hot. Firstly, bibimbap usually has a fried eggs on it but at this place it costs extra bringing my total to 13.50. I picked it up and the woman at the counter was very friendly. There is one table there in case you want to dine in. I got home and realized the egg I ordered wasn't in it. There was also a very small amount of bulgogi. I would say maybe less than a quarter cup. This was disappointing because I've gotten bibimbap elsewhere in NYC that has had double the beef, the egg included and was the same price or only 1$ more. The vegetables were fresh but the whole dish had an over salted taste. I could tell the bulgogi was good but there wasn't enough of it to remotely satisfy. This is a solid joint for Korean takeout in the area. The Bulgogi and Galbi are pretty solid, but I find the Spicy Pork bowl to be the best - the Cilantro in it gives a really nice fresh taste. My main issue is with the inconsistent quality. Sometimes I'll walk in there and it's definitely coming straight off the stovetop, but others...there is a microwave that I've seen used. Microwaved thin cuts of meat are not the best, and it definitely affects the freshness of the dish. It's still solid, but not great in that state. So really, I either give this place a 5-star when it's fresh, or a 3-star when it's not -- average out to a 4-star. read more

We wandered in here because we were hungry after a show in the middle of the vast desert surrounding the Navy Yard. We were not expecting to find some of the best Korean food we've had anywhere. It was really that good. We chatted a bit with the owner, whose jobs included working the register, taking care of customers, and cooking all the food (in a kitchen that appeared built for at least 3 or 4 busy line cooks). She mentioned that her original goal had been to conquer all of Brooklyn by delivering everywhere--a plan that was thwarted by traffic. She still has wide-eyed dreams of renewing her conquest eventually, delivering bibimbop across the borough via tiger-striped drones. Until then, my one major complaint about Tiger Box persists: it's nowhere near my neighborhood. I have a minor complaint, too, but it's one that I grumble at every Korean takeout place: there's just so much packaging material. So, so much plastic. Is it really worth destroying the planet just to have a brief taste of TB's sublime spicy chicken bowl and kimchee? Yes, it is. But I'd rather not be forced to make that choice. Bibimbop is a delight, with perfectly seasoned beef. The dooboo-jun are delicious. The kimchi is fantastic. Order any of the bento boxes and you'll see just how generous she is with both variety and portion size. A lot of Korean food in Brooklyn is simply missing depth of flavor. It's hard to put a finger on why, but just seems as though the broths, stews, sauces are put together in a hurry. Always tastes like a pale shadow of the best Korean food in Queens and Manhattan.
