For dessert, we had the freshly baked apple strudel, and it was the perfect ending to an incredible meal. You could taste how fresh everything was--from the flaky, buttery pastry to the warm apples and even the homemade whipped cream. It was absolutely delicious. The owner's daughter Sarah runs the kitchen. My husband had a pork tenderloin schnitzel "Vienna style" ($20) and I had a jaegerschnizel with mushroom gravy ($20) and both were excellent. We split the potato pancakes (two with sour cream and apple sauce, $12) which were served crispy but tasty. They had a nice German beer and wine list. The rooms are on the smaller side, but having a mini refrigerator in each room was incredibly helpful when traveling with kids, especially with a larger family group. The owners were exceptionally nice, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay. Downtown was a short walk (groceries, pizza, sandwiches, anything you need) and on the property there were kitchen spaces for us to hang out with plenty to do on the property. Rooms #11 & 12 were amazing. 11 is the larger room and larger bathroom with 2 full beds. 12 has a pullout sofa and full bed. Easily sleeps 2 couples in each room or mom and dad and 2 kids, but that's not what you're there for. Outside (if you take both spaces) is a large outdoor deck divided in half by a wall but connected so you can get from one room to the other. It has a shared yard beyond that. The landscaping is amazing. The property is on the river with tons of space to chill in the water. They have a deck for the facility and everyone can use it. It's shared so be prepared to be with other people but it is a place that seems to attract a good crowd. Everyone who we ran into there was nice. Another thing on the property they was cool was coffee, fresh ice cold filtered water, popcorn, and the front desk made the kids cotton candy daily. There is an ice machine there as well so you can roast in the sun and drink ice cold filtered water till you pop. That part of the place is in the outdoor kitchen which is community and has board games and seating for everyone. Outside the kitchen is bathrooms and seating areas. 2 fireplaces for s'mores and I believe a bbq pit (I can't remember we have a travel size Traegar they let us use) as well. If I were to get married or have a party it would 1000% be here. I think there is 12 rooms and I'd rent the whole spot for it without even thinking twice. Maybe bring extra help to keep the party rolling but this place legit is perfect for it. They also have like a VIP outdoor seating area we didn't end up getting but has a TV and some "roped off" area to hang out at that is an amazing setup. I can keep going but we loved this place. Even upon arrival our room had spiders have babies in the room (happens yall it's on the river and def outdoorsy) and my wife felt awkward asking because we didn't want to sound like the complaining people but we asked for a vacuum to get them out. The lady actually came in the room and helped us. 5 star stay. 5 star people, oh and being a licensed contractor and getting along with people who work, the people who kept the grounds were cool too. Super nice to our kids, and when you see the landscape, you can tell they are good at their job. Can't say enough good stuff. We will be back.

I read the spotty reviews, but thought the bad reviews were mostly due to the small size of many rooms. We had probably the nicest room, Deluxe River View Studio D, second floor with newer windows overlooking the river and a newly installed floor. Despite its history, fantastic location and charming grounds, I can't recommend this place at all (except to visit for a few hours on lazy afternoon on the river, like some locals did during our stay). Its best years are long, long gone. I ordinarily love these types of properties, and want to support them, but this place had a very poorly maintained structure, unkempt exterior, disorganized and insufficient staff, with obviously neglected gardens/grounds (tree/plant debris, cobwebs, dusty, etc.). "Deferred maintenance" probably best description for this place. It's obvious this place is barely hanging on. Our room was adequate, but the bed was rock hard, there was a huge cobweb over the bed, spiders in the shower, and the curtains to the tiny balcony (which was filthy and uninviting) were cheap and transparent (no privacy provided). The route, stairs and outside balcony leading to our room was dark and dirty - the hotel is located under trees and tree litter, cobwebs, and dirt/dust were everywhere. We were also the only ones staying there and no staff was on the property at night. Making matters worse, the room was absurdly overpriced. For the $350/night paid, I expected much, much higher quality throughout the property - inside and out, adequate staffing, a spotless room with higher quality furnishings and a comfortable bed. At $350/night, I expected a very different experience. If the room was $150 or $175, it would be easier to overlook its flaws and not feel like a sucker tourist. (We next stayed at The Madrones in Philo for the same rate - completely different experience and well worth it.) The few bright spots: the female bartender was friendly and accommodating, and the location with the interesting, terraced exterior leading down to the river. I would never recommend this place, and truly wish I'd selected something else in the area.

The tent was nice and cozy with a heating blanket on the bed in case it gets cold, and a fan in case it gets hot. They provide locks for you to lock the tent when you leave. The tent has electricity, plug ins for your chargers or blow dryer, etc., clean outdoor showers, flush toilets, and sinks. The water in the shower got nice and warm. The care that they put into this place is incredible. Lighted votive candles in glass lanterns and string lights illuminated every night, continental breakfast included in your stay and brought to you at the time of your choosing every morning, a welcome cocktail when you check in, complementary bikes that you can ride around town, fire pits, yoga "studio", and the pool and spa with the honor bar that are open 24/7. We really enjoyed our stay here. We had plans for our anniversary while we were there, but I would like go back to simply enjoy the amenities next time! It is a good sign that she is taking reviews and opinions about her business serious, as every competent business owner should. I attribute the somewhat mediocre experience to her absence and I am sure that our experience would have been different if the family would not have been out of town during our visit. I have to echo the two other posters in regards to the rooms and surroundings of the Avalon Bed & Breakfast. The room we stayed in was in impeccable condition, the picturesque surroundings and tranquility we got to enjoy on the patio were perfect, except for the above mentioned problems. That's the sole reason I can't give it 5 stars. However, Hilary has since offered us a free night at her establishment, which is a nice way of trying to remedy our experience. It shows she truly does care about her guests and patrons and we might take her up on her offer.
