Short walk up the hill from the office - great view!

Imagine this: you pack a bag, bring your dog, and drive out to the Lodge at Marconi after work. The approach alone feels like a transition - winding roads, rolling hills, glimpses of the Pacific. As dusk settles and darkness blankets the land, the drive is clearly marked and welcoming. A fire glows outside the lobby, where guests gather for complimentary s'mores from the front desk. Melissa greeted me that evening - jovial, warm, and effortlessly efficient. Check-in felt less like a transaction and more like an arrival. After settling in, we walked up to Mable's just up the hill. The air was crisp. Jackie seated us outside, wiping down the table and setting up the heater while asking what brought us there. The service felt attentive without being intrusive - thoughtful in a way that made you feel both seen and relaxed. The manager recommended the oysters (sourced just down the hillside), clam chowder, beef short ribs, carrots, and potatoes he described as "ridiculously good." He wasn't wrong. One bite and I understood the confidence behind the recommendation. Jackie crafted a mezcal cocktail - technically out of season due to its pomegranate base - so she improvised beautifully. It was smoky, warm and sweet; perfect for the evening. Every dish felt intentional and dessert was too - chocolate mousse, peanut butter, caramel, roasted marshmallow, quinoa bark, and peanuts that melted together in a single, perfectly balanced bite. Later, I returned to the now-quiet fire, made one last s'more, and sat in stillness. There was a palpable sense of history on the land - a peaceful awareness of all who had gathered there before. The room was simple and deeply comfortable. I read before wrapping myself in crisp sheets and falling asleep on a cool pillow. In the morning, wrapped in a Marconi robe, I walked to the sauna and meditated - alternating between closed eyes and views of trees and the Pacific beyond. After a hot shower, I packed up and chose a nearby trail. The hike unfolded like a story: a solitary yellow chair overlooking rolling hills and ocean; the distant sound of cattle; clusters of seats that felt as if laughter had only just faded; historic buildings standing quietly in time; a small pond alive with frogs; ravens calling overhead; forest trails opening into meadow views. Eventually, the paths brought me back near Mable's. For breakfast, Haven greeted me and I chose the same table from the night before. I ordered the French toast after seeing the light in the eyes of my waitress when she described it - along with black coffee and scrambled eggs. Robert, the manager, stopped by to ask about my stay and suggested one final trail before I left. He was right - it was the perfect closing note. The Lodge at Marconi offers more than a stay. It offers space - to breathe, to wander, to reconnect. Wherever you're traveling from, you may just find solace here.

The Mrs. and I spent last night at the Lodge at Marconi which is located at the Marconi Conference Center and State Historic Park. We've been to Marshall numerous times but never stayed there. Honestly, I never thought about staying in Marshall to be honest. The Marconi Lodge has a little over 40 rooms so it isn't a large place like Asilomar in Pacific Grove. The entire state park encompasses a little over 60 acres. We arrived around 2 after enjoying lunch at the Marshall Store. Check in was quick and the front desk staff was friendly. They pointed out all the amenities offered at the lodge. Especially in the common areas which are beautiful. Still and sparking water are on tap in the lobby which was nice. If you need wine glasses you can just grab them off the shelf. Ice is available too along with free coffee in the morning. We were assigned room 207 which was a ground floor room with a king bed. The bed was very comfortable. The room was decorated in soothing earth tones that complemented the surroundings. There were plenty of electrical outlets and USB ports. Even USB-C which was nice. There is even a white noise machine. The bathroom was beautiful. I took a shower this morning and I felt like I was in a spa. There is no tv but the wifi worked really well. The view from 207 was pretty spectacular. There is a large window that looks out into the woods with Tamales Bay behind it. The common space outside was really nice. There is a communal gas fire pit which we took advantage of. Nature was all around us to the point where we saw deer and a fox while enjoying the fire. There is an onsite restaurant up the hill from the lodge called Mable's which I highly recommend. It offers incredible food, service, and a great bar. The grounds have a lot of trails that are easy for an amateur hiker to handle. There are a lot of other buildings on the grounds. Many of them are unoccupied. The place has a sorted and dark history. It was once home to a cult that forced women to shave their heads and men to have vasectomies. It was also a drug rehabilitation center. That said, I'm sure there is a lot of negative energy trapped within the grounds. One of the creepiest things was the old hotel that used to on the property. It's a large building that once housed the cult. Despite the history of the place I'd stay at the Marconi Lodge again in a heartbeat. It was a little slice of paradise.

The lodge itself is a significant improvement compared to before it was taken over by Nashville-based Oliver Hospitality. That said: * Front desk service is just okay. It's not especially warm or inviting, and feels more transactional--like you're simply a paying customer rather than a guest meant to be delighted. * Timing matters. It's best to visit when there isn't a wedding or large corporate event. Management prioritizes those groups (understandably), which can mean closing the restaurant for private dinners or putting individual guests second. Large groups also tend to bring late-night noise. * Sustainability claims fall short. While the lobby highlights "eco-friendly" efforts, the reality is different: they serve drinks in so-called recyclable cups that are lined with polyethylene (making them non-recyclable) and lids that are too small and light to ever get recycled in practice. Meanwhile, they keep a fireplace burning in the lobby all day and run the sauna at full heat continuously--hardly consistent with true sustainability. * Grounds underutilized. Several areas remain undeveloped despite years of claims about new amenities being "in the works." A thoughtfully designed spa would be an excellent use of the space and provide real added value for guests. * Limited local insight. As a Nashville-based operator, Oliver Hospitality doesn't seem especially attuned to the preferences of local or regional visitors. * Value for price. For what they charge, a comparable property in the North Bay would typically offer more: complimentary happy hours with wine, cheese, and crackers, as well as free buffet breakfasts (for example, Gaige House Inn in Glen Ellen). We also noted in advance that our stay was for our anniversary, yet there was no acknowledgement--something as simple as a handwritten card and two small chocolates would have gone a long way toward making the experience feel personal and memorable. All that said, we genuinely enjoy the location and will keep coming back--but we'll be more selective about when we visit and will adjust our expectations accordingly.

The hotel was acquaint, beautiful location around a lot of wildlife. The fireplace was beautiful, the hotel was clean. Staff was friendly.

    S'mores at the fire pit!

The innkeeper, Bob, greeted us in person when we arrived around 11:30pm; He personally showed us to our room and calmly described how ordering breakfast worked, gave us wifi credentials, and then let us relax. If you're looking for upscale luxury, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for an exceptionally clean, cozy, and well run B&B than look no further. You're staying in a tranquil, untroubled place that persuades you to decompress and clear your mind. Notable Amenities: - WiFi - Feminine products in the bathroom - Novels and light music - Fireplace - Continental breakfast - Binoculars - Hiking backpack - Mini refrigerator What is provided to you promotes relaxation and exploring your surroundings. We spent our mornings in the room eating breakfast, listening to Claude Debussy and watching the mist clear over the bay. We then headed out to go kayaking all day, had oysters and champagne for dinner, then retreated back to the B&B to cozy up in front of the fire. *Note About Breakfast* Breakfast is brought to your room and includes the following: tea, orange juice, and an assortment of breads (blueberry, coffee, pumpkin, poppyseed, etc.) *Note About Your Surroundings* You are near a few restaurants, and a light breakfast is provided, otherwise not much is around. I would suggest bringing some fruits/veggies and other light snacks when you are out during the day.

It looks like they've put a lot of effort into renovating and updating the property, and it really shows. Our cottage was very clean, comfortable, and felt newly refreshed. One feature we especially loved was that both bedrooms had doors leading out to the private backyard patio, which made the space feel open and relaxing. The only minor drawback was the living room furniture layout. It wasn't ideal for watching TV, but we simply moved the couch back a bit and rearranged the chairs, which solved the problem. A loveseat would make the space even more comfortable. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly accommodating. They took the time to show us other rooms on the property and made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. The new restaurant wasn't open during our visit, but it's a great addition and gives us another reason to come back. Just a quick 20 drive to the Point Reyes Beaches. Somehow, the website for this "Bed & Breakfast' fails to mention that this is a very tiny studio and the "Eurobed' is a uncomfortable, squeaky Murphy bed that effectively cuts the room in half when it's pulled down. But you'll need to move some furniture out of the way before you can even open the bed. There was no advertised 'down comforter' and the furnishings are very tired and dreary - think worn thrift store quality. Even the candles on the small dining table were dusty, burned down stubs. The kitchen area is tiny, with no room to work, and some of the appliances were located in areas you couldn't even plug them in! And the flatware that came out of the drawer was noticeably greasy and had to be washed before we could use them. The deck is also small and in heavy shade most of the day - there was a small cafe table and 2 chairs and two dusty lounge chairs you wouldn't want to use - certainly nothing like the B & B website photos. Hot tub is small but functional - but not truly private, as your view from the deck opens out to the owners backyard lawn and the monstrous house which is right next door. The gazebo on Inverness Bay has a lovely view, but it, like everything else here, is rough and beaten up - not a clean or comfortable place to hang out. There are many, many other nicer places to stay in Inverness and areas around Tomales Bay - this was the worst "Bed & Breakfast' or vacation rental of any kind we'd ever stayed at. Unless you don't care about ambiance and comfort, don't even consider staying here.
