    Communal fire pit

The Mrs. and I spent last night at the Lodge at Marconi which is located at the Marconi Conference Center and State Historic Park. We've been to Marshall numerous times but never stayed there. Honestly, I never thought about staying in Marshall to be honest. The Marconi Lodge has a little over 40 rooms so it isn't a large place like Asilomar in Pacific Grove. The entire state park encompasses a little over 60 acres. We arrived around 2 after enjoying lunch at the Marshall Store. Check in was quick and the front desk staff was friendly. They pointed out all the amenities offered at the lodge. Especially in the common areas which are beautiful. Still and sparking water are on tap in the lobby which was nice. If you need wine glasses you can just grab them off the shelf. Ice is available too along with free coffee in the morning. We were assigned room 207 which was a ground floor room with a king bed. The bed was very comfortable. The room was decorated in soothing earth tones that complemented the surroundings. There were plenty of electrical outlets and USB ports. Even USB-C which was nice. There is even a white noise machine. The bathroom was beautiful. I took a shower this morning and I felt like I was in a spa. There is no tv but the wifi worked really well. The view from 207 was pretty spectacular. There is a large window that looks out into the woods with Tamales Bay behind it. The common space outside was really nice. There is a communal gas fire pit which we took advantage of. Nature was all around us to the point where we saw deer and a fox while enjoying the fire. There is an onsite restaurant up the hill from the lodge called Mable's which I highly recommend. It offers incredible food, service, and a great bar. The grounds have a lot of trails that are easy for an amateur hiker to handle. There are a lot of other buildings on the grounds. Many of them are unoccupied. The place has a sorted and dark history. It was once home to a cult that forced women to shave their heads and men to have vasectomies. It was also a drug rehabilitation center. That said, I'm sure there is a lot of negative energy trapped within the grounds. One of the creepiest things was the old hotel that used to on the property. It's a large building that once housed the cult. Despite the history of the place I'd stay at the Marconi Lodge again in a heartbeat. It was a little slice of paradise.

The lodge itself is a significant improvement compared to before it was taken over by Nashville-based Oliver Hospitality. That said: * Front desk service is just okay. It's not especially warm or inviting, and feels more transactional--like you're simply a paying customer rather than a guest meant to be delighted. * Timing matters. It's best to visit when there isn't a wedding or large corporate event. Management prioritizes those groups (understandably), which can mean closing the restaurant for private dinners or putting individual guests second. Large groups also tend to bring late-night noise. * Sustainability claims fall short. While the lobby highlights "eco-friendly" efforts, the reality is different: they serve drinks in so-called recyclable cups that are lined with polyethylene (making them non-recyclable) and lids that are too small and light to ever get recycled in practice. Meanwhile, they keep a fireplace burning in the lobby all day and run the sauna at full heat continuously--hardly consistent with true sustainability. * Grounds underutilized. Several areas remain undeveloped despite years of claims about new amenities being "in the works." A thoughtfully designed spa would be an excellent use of the space and provide real added value for guests. * Limited local insight. As a Nashville-based operator, Oliver Hospitality doesn't seem especially attuned to the preferences of local or regional visitors. * Value for price. For what they charge, a comparable property in the North Bay would typically offer more: complimentary happy hours with wine, cheese, and crackers, as well as free buffet breakfasts (for example, Gaige House Inn in Glen Ellen). We also noted in advance that our stay was for our anniversary, yet there was no acknowledgement--something as simple as a handwritten card and two small chocolates would have gone a long way toward making the experience feel personal and memorable. All that said, we genuinely enjoy the location and will keep coming back--but we'll be more selective about when we visit and will adjust our expectations accordingly.

The hotel was acquaint, beautiful location around a lot of wildlife. The fireplace was beautiful, the hotel was clean. Staff was friendly.

    S'mores at the fire pit!

We had a 7:45pm dinner reservation and arrived on time, only to find no one at the host stand. After waiting about 10 minutes, someone finally came and seated us around 7:55. Water was poured, and then nothing. No server ever came to our table. After sitting there for 30 minutes without anyone taking our order or even checking in, we left at 8:25. Really disappointing, because the food actually looked good. We were staying nearby and decided to give it another shot the next morning for breakfast, which was included with our hotel stay. Unfortunately, it was more of the same. We arrived around 9am, again no one at the host stand. We eventually flagged down a waitress, who rudely told us to just seat ourselves. After sitting down, we waited another 20 minutes and still no one came to take our order. We left again without eating. The front of house operation here is a complete mess. It feels like there is no system at all, no coordination, no accountability, and no awareness of guests. At one point, I overheard staff saying things like "let's just say this one has no milk in it" and "let's just say this one is sunny side up," which made it clear they did not even know where dishes were supposed to go and were just guessing. Even more telling, barely anyone in the restaurant was actually eating, and most people looked as confused and frustrated as we were. Honestly, the owner and staff should be embarrassed by how poorly this place is being run. I have never seen such a complete breakdown in service, especially two days in a row. Huge disappointment.

The service, on the other hand, was as adequate but flavored with a heavy dose of grumpy, broken wait staff. More than one hostess/waitress seemed almost resentful that we were there. Not my idea of a special night out. Just because you can afford to take your sweetheart out to a nice dinner doesn't mean you're a jerk and deserve to be scowled at. This can happen when you try and do really good food in a rural area and the workforce just isn't up to the challenge. Too bad. Sometimes you can train people to be gracious and inviting and to care about their jobs but sometimes people are just too broken and there's nobody else to choose from.

We can't say enough positive things about Vivien and Michael. We had heard planning a wedding would be stressful, but largely thanks to Vivien and Michael, we honestly never felt stressed. They regularly welcomed us to the ranch ahead of our wedding, helping us build a special bond to the land and to their family. They worked so effectively as a team, helping us find lodging, answering questions on behalf of our other vendors, thoughtfully navigating asks related to honoring recently passed family members, and so much more. During the wedding weekend, Michael bent over backwards to make sure everything ran smoothly, always beaming with a huge smile. His soft serve ice cream was such a big hit! It was always such a relief to see Michael, because we knew he was fixing something we didn't have to worry about, or making something work better, or just thinking 10 steps ahead to make a future moment run smoothly. A Dream Venue with Exceptional Support - The Haven at Tomales…read more Our wedding at The Haven at Tomales was nothing short of spectacular. From the very first conversation to the big day itself, everything about this venue--and working with Mandy, the venue coordinator--was absolutely wonderful. Mandy was incredibly responsive, kind, and thoughtful throughout the entire planning process. She always looked for the best solution to every question or hurdle, and was flexible when it mattered--she even worked with us to onboard a new florist to their approved vendor list. She provided excellent recommendations for other vendors and consistently made us feel supported. Since I was out of state when we booked, she gave my mom a site tour in my place, and later offered another visit closer to the wedding date. On the day of, she was present, helpful, and ensured everything ran smoothly. The venue itself is simply breathtaking. We held our ceremony at the Knoll Crest custom site, surrounded by rolling hills as far as the eye could see--an unforgettable and truly magical setting. The barn and lawn area provided the perfect mix of rustic charm and elegant style, and made for a stunning reception backdrop. We also rented a few furniture pieces through The Haven, which were beautiful additions and made the space feel even more special. The best part? The Haven team handled all the setup and teardown, making it completely stress-free for us. We got ready in the bridal and groom suites that morning, which were both spacious and comfortable--easily accommodating four hairstylists, a dress steaming station, and all the hustle and bustle of prep time. One especially thoughtful touch: Mandy personally drove us around in a golf cart for our couples photos and to and from the ceremony site--such a small thing that made a big difference in keeping the day smooth and stress-free. If you're looking for a magical, serene, and elegant venue with phenomenal staff, The Haven at Tomales is it. Just one tip for future couples: reach out to caterers and florists early in the planning process, as The Haven works with a select list of approved caterers (and for good reason--the quality is outstanding, but availability can book up quickly). We are so grateful to Mandy and The Haven team for giving us a wedding day beyond our dreams.

The location is peaceful, there's cows grazing grass, a little lake, and just nature all around. The building is an old barn with a rustic feel, I like little details where even the bathroom door is locked with a metal latch. I love the design of this space. It is absolutely perfect for a banquet or large group event! Parking is limited. So our friends had arranged shuttles from the hotel to The Haven for their guests. The ceremony was outdoor in the late afternoon. The sun was blazing so remember to wear sunscreen! I noticed nobody wore hats to our event. I highly recommend hats and sunscreen if you will be outdoor for your event. A friend of ours got sunburned. There was a side area where they set up a bar and servers were coming out with appetizers. I like the semi-outdoor space here, not as sunny or windy as the outside and very warm and cozy with the heating lamps on. During the golden hour, my husband and I came outside to take pictures and these are the nicest pictures we've taken in years, ones I will cherish for a long time! There was plenty of room inside for the banquet. Our friends' wedding was about 15 tables and there was enough room for dance floor too. Bathrooms were clean and conveniently located.
