A must if you are in the Solvang area...especially since most of Solvang's food is sadly crap....but not here at Eats [which in many aspects is far superior to the extravagant Gary Dankos in SF at 1/5 of the price & 3x the GD portions...think $500+...or even my now closed local bargain fav...Bell Street Farm in Los Alamos].
Where else could I get local farm fresh homemade &
EAT,
the following for 1-2 for $100:
1- Pig's Ear in a Spicy Vinegar marinade complete with palate cleaning Cilantro? It was better than either the Chinese version that uses Pig Tendon..or even fine Eastern European Headcheese. Full of fresh pork flavor & crunch, this is a must must! The last time I had something so good, I was a regular in the now defunct Panda Dim Sum restaurant in Honolulu.
2- Pheasant topping a big salad of Red Leaf lettuce, Yellow Apples, with a bit too much oily dressing & spices. The Pheasant which was pleasant did not have any notes past "chicken". While a bit overwhelmed by the copious dressing, I still finished it...but had a bit of GI issue later. The last time I had Pheasant was decades ago in NYC's East Village.
3- Rabbit Stew was really the star of the show. Delicate, flavorful, creamy, & reminded me of homegrown Rabbit stew made on my relative's farm in Myjava, Slovakia....where I visited after the Berlin Wall came done...& Czechoslovakia & the evil Soviets were no more. This was true comfort food at it's best.
4- Foie Gra [aka Pate] was the day's unlisted "Chef's Special" & had two choice pieces of house-made Goose liver Pate that was seasoned far better than pricey rare French versions at $99 lb. in a Cheese Shop in SLO. While the cold version was filled with Magical flavors, somehow the over-cooked version on partially burnt bread lost the "magic". Judging by my food & the many pics, they seem to have a bad habit of burning bread, or over dressing salads. The wonderful Foie was sitting in their amazing fridge along side the equally amazing Pig Ear. These are extremely rare & wonderful in the extreme...and you may only encounter these once in a lifetime!
5- Vegetarian Pizza was judge delicious by my Veg wife which is a high honor. It had exotic mushrooms, spinach, razor thin potato, & a fine cheese. It was cooked just right & not burnt nor oily. It was more like a round flatbread in it's flavor profile.
I was so amazed by this glorious amazing unique hole-in-the-wall that I was even OK with putting up with the super-hard seating [next time I need to bring a cushion] which is horrid for people with leg Neuropathy or the handicapped. Next time, I will now know to ask for them to please keep the dressing on the side, not sear the Pate, nor burn the bread. I can well see how many who came at packed noisy time & had a burnet bread sandwich would be less than pleased.
We found the service people to be really friendly & helpful, but were rushed & overworked. They did say that they have or will have a big dinning area for special events next door & a take out place soon. I would surely consider taking out some fine homemade unique exotic Deli fare, such as Homemade Foie Gras & Pressed Pig's Ear.
While there are close to a thousand reviews [with pics], it seems that few have tried most items on their over-whelming menu....and may confuse a small plate with a full entree...or sandwich. The fast food paradigm here throws many off...but some of these EATS are totally creatively deliciously unique....and if you do not like the atmosphere...get the goodies for take out! Since I am only an hour away, & despite some minor flaws, I can
EAT like the President of France
for near the price of what
our President EATS [which is well known to be crap..like McD's].
Do not be "fooled" by neither the "so-called" "pseudo"-Danish eats in Solvang, nor the basic [but decent] eats at the neighboring Pea soup place [unless you crave great Peasoup, good Cheddar Cheese Dip, or decent...but pricey Pasteries],
you will likely NEVER find a unique place like Industrial EATS anywhere else at this quality, diversity, price, nor homemade delectableness.
Again...just remember at least four stellar EATS here:
FOIE GRAS
PIG EARS
RABBIT
PHEASANT
{& Pizza for most}
I will surely be back for EATS here...if you crave desert, I would recommend Peasoup Andersons for that over the mass produced Costco-like junk they past off in Solvang as "authentic"....NOT!
While I love the buildings, the little Museum, the history & a few shops...Solvang sadly is a tourist trap...& I can find far better pastries near Pismo Beach [i.e. Grover Beach or Arroyo Grande Village's Eclair]. One of the redeeming qualities is the growing number of now dozens of wine tasting places all around Solvang...also next to EATS...where they have good Pinots.
BTW- Their sign only simply says EATS & seems a bit lost in this garaged Industrial area, but it is only
1/2 mile off the 101! read more
