I was already skeptical to eat here once I walked in and saw the old decor and bad lighting. But my hubby wanted to eat Tandoori Chicken and they had halal chicken here. We were seated and given our waters right away. Ordered the fish Pakora..yeah, totally tasted like fish sticks with cumin seed. Not your standard Indian fish pakora! Ordered the whole tandoori chicken, channa masala, and lamb do piaza dishes for the entrees. I never knew anyone could mess up tandoori chicken but they did..the lamb and channa were really good (which is why I didn't give them a 1 star review). Cleanliness. Okay, so, I really had to compromise my clean standards to eat here because the food was already made. The restaurant is dark and dingy and there's no air conditioning. The dishes were overflowing on the silver plates (refer to pics). In addition, my camera flash captured the fingerprints/DNA that were on the silver plate. Ugh. The customer service is OK. The girls don't really know English that well because they didn't know what a saucer was. I told the owner I found a hair in the tamarind chutney and she went into a long discussion about tamarind having the hair on the nut. Well, duh, I know that. But hair and tamarind seed hair is different. I got a new chutney bowl after I complained; even though I felt like leaving after I saw it! I wouldn't ever go back but hope they improve their physical restaurant and upgrade their customer service skills. read more

I like to make sure I have a good sampling of a place before giving it a review, so naturally I've eaten here at least 47,687 times, just to be sure. Joking aside, this is one of my favorite places in Tucson, I have tried many many Indian food places but they've all been lacking. I've had the buffet and the standard menu, and both have been just great - This place produces brilliant quality, traditional Indian food, and I can't get enough of it. We have been looking for a great Indian restaurant, ideally with a buffet so we could sample a broad variety of the chef's cooking. The lunch buffet was perfect. Perfect fluffy naan that is a bit stretchy is an art. So is a well balanced mint chutney. The beef was tender, the dal nicely seasoned. With a buffet you have to expect the kitchen to dial down the heat. But this just allowed the masterful blends of spices in each dish to shine. Some Indian cooks will get stuck in a rut using the same spice blend in every dish. Not here. Each dish was unique and delicious. I like my gulab jamun warm but the cardamom forward rice pudding more than made up for it. Everything is very casual and you can expect to do a lot of self-service. It felt a little like visiting your favorite Auntie and eating at a large family gathering. You might have to poke your head around the corner and hail someone from the kitchen for a spoon or your check. Alcohol is served. No outdoor seating. But it's a clean spacious indoor venue with a fringe of accolades and Indian kitsch as decor. This place is all about feeding people good food. read more

I love Indian food but some spices or something in the food really did not agree with my body. I have eaten at quite a few Indian places and the 2 stars would suit the level of food. This place is never open so I always call before hand to make sure and it's always a rude old lady who answers. Completely just rude, every single time I ask if they are open and she even seems like in a rush to hang up on you. totally turned me off from this place the second time it happened to me. Food from the menu is good and I like the food but chances are they're probably closed and good luck if you call because you're rarely going to get a straight to the point polite answer. read more

love this place...great service from the owners who run the place themselves and it shows... we ordered three entrees and we couldnt pick a favorite...they were all so good we gave up the exercise. superbly flavored and authentic and that rarity these days in Indian restaurants...an Indian eatery that does not douse everything with heavy cream and tomato sauce... their Fish Karahi is to die for and best of all...everything is fresh and balanced. 3-1/2 stars is more accurate overall, but there were glimpses of genuine greatness. When the exceptional value is taken into account, the rating edges closer to 4-stars. A small group went from work for the lunch buffet on a Tuesday, 12noon. The establishment was very nicely decorated and all tables had neatly arranged place settings. There were only two other tables occupied with a total of 3 people when we arrived. During the 45 minutes we were there, just two other groups arrived. The good: The buffet is slightly smaller than average, but the quality is commensurately above average. The shredded beef stew is spicy, lean, and tender. The several vegetarian dishes - including one with zucchini and green peppers and a delicious pea soup in a tikka masala(?) sauce - were both very good, though a bit heavy on the potatoes. There was also an incredibly tasty lentil soup that, for soup, was thick (my preference) and also had a nice little kick to it. Finally, the Tandoori chicken was tender and flavorful. The buffet was spotlessly clean; drinks were timely refreshed; and our finished plates were usually whisked away promptly. Finally, while I did not have any dessert or appetizer, a colleague raved that the Samosas were the best she'd had (in Tucson). I also noticed that another got seconds on the Gulab Jamun (cake-like balls, soaked in rose syrup). The not-so-good: None of the buffet items had a name tag anywhere, none... hence the clumsy guesses regarding the dishes above. The owner (elderly lady) who was the host and boss of the premises had her smart phone set on super loud. She listened to a YouTube or something (very loudly) and she would occasionally play music (at first we thought it was a ring-tone) also very loudly through the tiny, tinny phone speaker. It was all very distracting. Frustratingly, the lentil soup and the tikka masala pea soup had to both be eaten off of plates because "we don't have many bowls" explained the owner-lady. Keep in mind the beginning of this review... we were the third table to be seated and it never got more crowded than 5 tables, in an establishment that has roughly 15 tables. To add to the Sisyphean task of enjoying the two soups, while there were forks/knives, there were no spoons, anywhere! I got creative, grabbed a ceramic coffee cup and sipped the lentils and pea soups from a mug. Lastly, they were limited in their Tandoori chicken, with sparse offerings upon arrival and a reload only just as we were about to leave. Perhaps this was simply an atypical weekday performance. Moreover, despite these can't-get-out-of-my-own-way glitches, the lunch buffet is a very reasonable $9. Parking is limited in front and hard to exit due to it's cramped positioning up against Campbell Blvd. However, there is ample parking (shared with Brush Fire and several others) behind this strip mall. Wash room is a single/unisex room and small, but it's clean. read more

it's clean and attractive and a lovely family there. but plastic dinnerware does not work with me. the food on the buffet was good but not what I thought it would be. the chicken was good, and a dessert that is called Gulab Jamun looks like a cherry but is dough. they said they have lamb dishes too so my friends would like that perhaps. It cost too much but of course, good food is high and we just cannot believe what has happened.The bread was good and interesting. no butter , they have to take it and brush it and by the time I get it , it's cold. Darn.Suggestion, adverse in the u of a newspaper, and on group on and include tea with the meal. You need to bring people in. read more

I was one of the first costumer when India Oven opened. Every time I'm in Tucson i have to go back. Owners have aged but it still tastes like home cooked Indian food to me! Admittedly I haven't ever branched out too much there, I stick to the same Chicken Tikka Masala, veggie samosas and veggie pakoras. I love the mint chutney and my mom loves the Tamarind chutney. I've had southern Indian and Northern Indian and by far Northern Indian is my favorite for the Masala! India Oven won't disappoint in the creaminess of their Masala! The price is best in town. There are plenty of Fancy, overpriced Indian places in town but if you're looking for a low price and good quality Masala, India Oven is the place! read more

Loved my food and my friend's. -Reasonable prices. -Rice is an extra $2.50, not cool. -They forgot one of the sides I ordered. -My main problem -- the woman who appears to be the proprietor is totally obnoxious - she will talk your ear off in a one-way conversation about herself while you are trying to eat and have conversation with anyone you are with. This India restaurant made me remind my visit South India for many times as their original flavor with great spices. My husband told me that spinach creamy curry was the best in his whole life and we enjoyed 3 continual dinner together just before leaving Tucson yesterday. Mom's great curry was blend of family love and great passion and don't miss any menus as a polite customer not to bother their time!! They keep this AWESOME restaurant for last 28 years without holidays and they are so hard working to keep this great taste with deep love! My husband and I fell in love Mom's taste and we will go back to her taste again when we go back to Tucson, for sure as 100%! Pretty great food here with an amazing selection! I couldn't take a picture because of the lighting, but was in love with the lamb tikka masala and chicken curry. I loved how it came with rice to share with my boyfriend. Ordering some naan on the side proved to be worth it as well. My lamb dish was great. It was swimming in a tomato-based sauce and was full of flavor. Lamb was not tender, but wasn't dry either. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if I couldn't finish it in one sitting. Service here is a bit lacking. I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing, but she was incredibly abrupt and impersonal. Wait was a little long, but worth it. read more

Great Indian food, good variety. The buffet is available during the day, no buffet for dinner though. They close between the hours of 2:45p.m. & 5p.m., which is customary for international culture. It give the business and employees time to rest & rejuvenate, and take care of business themselves. Delicious sauces for dips and well-maintained temperatures on the food. Upscale Indian decor located throughout the restaurant. The bathroom/toilet part is tiny, as on airplane style, so be informed about that. The owner was really nice and even gave me one dollar off my bill, the coupon from Yelp only works for dinner. Stars are only given for the taste of the food. Dining expierence was o.k. but I'm not a fan of the decor. This place is decent enough. There is also a small Indian grocery store across the street from this place. read more

I got horrible food poisoning from this place. The food and service was good, just not worth getting potential salmonella poisoning.

Recently went back to this lovely establishment and finally had something that wasn't one of the sampler meals and wasn't the buffet. Chicken Kashmira, I think it was called.. If I got it wrong, it's close enough that you will find it It was so very good. I'm actually quite a good cook, so I don't put up with much by way of expense that is not warranted by such things as great service, atmosphere and taste. Which to me, the majority of the atmosphere revolves around if the seating is at all comfortable and if the customer service borders on the tolerable or better. But, still, other things do help, like decor, whether other customers are happy, if the cook is or is not throwing bowls out of the kitchen, etc. India Oven is the best place I've been to in Tucson for customer service. Their chairs are comfortable. The decor is beautiful. The elder lady who often ends up coming to our table to take our order is a wonderful, charming person who, like any of the best mothers, is so skilled at directing the less knowledgeable as to how they should do things. And, she asks us how spicy we want the dish, instead of just assuming - like many other places do- that since we have pale skin, we must want things to be so mild that anyone else would just fall asleep trying to eat it. I said "Oh, I'd like it pretty spicy." and that's what I got. It was spicy enough to feel it real good, but, not so spicy as to be an experience about how macho one is. It would have been way too spicy for my mom, for instance, and, that is another reason I like that this lady asks. If I did get a chance to b ring Mom to India Oven, I know we could order some of the same dishes and she could get hers mild and I could get mine blistering, if that's what we wanted to do. My sister asked if the dish (we ordered the same one) came with anything. She was told "No." Then she was told usually one rice and one naan was good for two. She nodded. That's what we got. This and the tablecloth was the only less than bright spot to our visit. The tablecloth is, however, a personal problem of mine. The reason the rice and naan were not a bright spot was only that we were both quite sure another naan was needed. Until we got done eating and realized there would have been no room for it. So, next time we need to bring two more people and everyone can have their own naan and less rice. The tablecloth: This is a problem only I have ever had, in my experience. It just so happens that the tablecloth and the way it hangs down, along with the contours of my body and how it bends as I am sitting down, tend to come together in some really silly manner that always ends up with it (the tablecloth) getting yanked out of position and sometimes being in danger of being yanked off the table altogether. I can live with that. There has been no trouble with it, outside of my own awkwardness. They are very polite and do not mention it. I love these people. And, they make good food. read more
