Jim and his team at Independent Remodeling did an amazing job on our first-floor renovation, exceeding our expectations. From the start, Jim was responsive and easy to work with. He has great ideas and isn't afraid to tell you if something you want to do isn't necessarily worth the expense (which we very much appreciated). They delivered high-quality work that leveraged their knowledge and expertise to ensure our new space was functional and beautiful. Some things you look for in a general contractor and rarely find are the ability to stay close to budget and timelines, and Jim and his team did both of these! Jim does a thorough of a job putting designs/estimates together, and the only change order we had (that wasn't scope creep on our part) was for some poor electrical a previous owner did that Jim couldn't have anticipated. In addition, Jim keeps your project moving. We rarely went two days without someone at the house making progress on our project; there were no extended delays due to materials or labor issues. Jim and his team also excel at problem solving. Every project has hiccups along the way, but every issue is tackled and Jim won't stop until the solution works for you. As an example, we were having trouble matching the color of some new hardwood floors to older, existing floors in the house. He helped us put down 16 stain samples and promised we would keep trying until we got it right (and we finally did!). It was very clear our happiness was extremely important to him. If you are looking for a contractor who is honest, knowledgeable, responsive, efficient, affordable, and fun to work with, Independent Remodeling is who you should work with. It's hard to find a company you would want to use a second time, but Jim will be the first person we call for future projects in our house, and who we will recommend to friends and family if they are looking to complete a project in their home. read more

Shortcut everywhere- every year is a new surprise-turns out they also used a black pipe for my tub faucet. When I turned on water when remodeling was done, they actually told me the brown water that initially comes out is from the copper pipes, and I believed them! Well, years later looking at brown water, the whole faucet came off the wall. Added picture. I had to get a plumber to come in, open the wall, put an actual tub pipe in, and have someone fix the wall, plumber come back to attach faucet. He couldn't believe that Independent Remodeling didn't drive 2 min to a store to get the right pipe. They were probably behind schedule and used whatever was in the truck. The amount of things wrong with this bathroom is insane. It's great when you're done and easy to be happy because you have your house back, but if you want long term quality, do not go with this company. When doing the initial walk-through explaining what I wanted, there were no notes taken. I thought that was weird but they are professionals and I figured it's what they do. That was, until plugs ended up in the wrong spot, etc. they did something wrong while installing a very expensive showerhead and fixture, and the solution was to put gum in it which took no time to get brown with mildew. The tiles were not laid properly and are cracking. They did come back a year later to redo it, but they are the same quick job. There's something behind the tile that is not letting water flow to the showerhead, we had all new piping done with them. They also hung a giant mirror with a thin wire. They had to come back after year because it was starting to pull off the frame. They just glued it to the wall. It is now peeling from the wall and is about to fall on someone. So after just a few years I am looking for a handyman to fix all these problems which may include taking down the new tile, so I thought I would share that this probably isn't a good solution if you're looking for a long-term bathroom redo. read more

After about 6 months of looking and 4 failed attempts with other companies trying to secure a contract to remodel our kitchen, we finally came across Jim at Independent Remodeling. Who knew it would be so hard to find someone honest, hard working and trustworthy. All we kept getting were either no shows, extremely price gauged quotes or after time spent measuring and walking through no contact back at all with any quote. Not only did Jim have the best walk through appointment he came back with the most cost effective price points. He was able to keep our grandiose ideas reasonable, never belittling our visualizations, but keeping us grounded within our budget. He made it easy to trust his expertise and that of his team. Working with Jim from the beginning was refreshing. It was almost as if we knew him all along and have done business with him for years. He was up front with us about his schedule and time line and let us know that if things opened up he would get us in earlier if he could, and he did! This is the second time we've hired Independent Remodeling for a home project. Jim and his team completed our basement remodel. Once again our expectations were exceeded! We gave a firm timeline as we were expecting our first child and wanted the project to be done before he arrived. They completed the job ahead of schedule! This was great for us as it gave us time to put the space back together. The basement is now functional and modern - I love showing it off to guests! I also know I'm getting quality workmanship so we'll be able to enjoy it for years to come. The thing I like about most working with Jim is that he brings his ideas and experience to the table. Other contractors I met with don't offer any ideas and you need to have all the details worked out on your own. That's not the case with Jim. He brings ideas and multiple options for us to consider. After extensive research to find a contractor to build my custom built in bookcase and cupboards for my living room, I hired Independent Remodeling and I couldn't be more pleased! There was very good communication with Jim, even if he was away, about the project. He started making drawings and discussing ideas at the free estimate! Had I been thinking, I probably would have checked Yelp too, as many of the comments listed here proved true for us as well. Not a single thing that went wrong in our kitchen was pre-warned by your team. The wrong start date, having to change the layout halfway through the project because your team mis-measured, the mismatched molding because the wrong one was ordered, no caulking or smoothing the mismatched lines in the crown - none of that was discussed with us and it was your team's responsibility to fix their errors, which they didn't, and the work has aged horribly. read more

When deciding to do my whole home renovation, I received multiple offers. Many of which I knew were priced well and came as recommendation. However, I decided to go with Jim at I.R. He and his crew are honest and trustworthy. I felt comfortable with them in in my home every day for ~7 months. Jim and his team are just PROS. While most of you likely used Independent for kitchen/bath remodels, I tasked his team with gutting and remodeling my voice studio in my home. Studios have pretty stringent build needs. This meant double walls, a "floated" triple drywalled ceiling, and a SUPER heavy studio door. Their tick-list, and Jim and his team's attention to detail were bar-none some of the best service I've experienced. So much so, my wife and I just called him to estimate the remodel of our master bath. Will he be the cheapest? Nope. But in this industry, you get what you pay for. The walls of my new condo...um, not so pretty! Blah white and then there's the random orange wall over the fireplace! So the first thing we did after closing was find a painter. The first quote I received was so expensive that painting alone was going to deplete our home improvement budget so our realtor suggested we contact Michael from Independent Remodeling. He had done some excellent work for one of her clients... I had Michael come by for an estimate- he was on time, very nice, seemed to know his stuff when it came to painting, and about half of the estimate I'd received from the other company....I hired him immediately for the job!! They made it easy for us by purchasing the paint themselves and Michael's team got to work right away....he showed up with 2-3 guys who work for him each morning and was always on time! I did have a slight freak out when I walked into the condo just when they were finishing up and noticed that the deep red walls I had asked for were painted pale pink (like a baby's nursery!). Ahhh- i'm a girly girl, but there's only so much pink someone can take. I'm certainly not going to live in a pink walled condo- for that I would have stuck with the orange wall! I immediately called Michael to let him know they had bought the wrong paint (Benjamin Moore should know better than to have 2 colors in the same color family named roseate and rosetta!), but he said he would take care of it immediately and sent another guy back the next day to turn those pink walls into red ones! From start to finish, Jim was professional and prompt. The crew was hardworking and took great care to protect our hallway and stairway while workers were in and out of the house. Brought Jim and his crew on back in November of 2019 to convert two rooms into a bed / bathroom in-law suite. The real challenge was getting water service to the area, so we had to demolish an existing bathroom as well - not a small project! Pros - Quote was not far off the final numbers - Quality of the work done was exceptional. My mother-in-law loves her new 'apartment'. Tile work especially is top notch. - Great communication throughout the process. Had at least a few texts a week with my Project Manager (Brian). He always responded quickly. - Workers were all very polite and professional; respectful of social distancing with my kids around (2020 is the worst) - They were quick to resolve any issues or things that weren't up to par. Focused on making sure it's right. - Space was kept clean at the end of each workday Cons - Pricing was a little higher than I had hoped (but you pay for what you get). They were far more reasonable than another contractor I had originally started out with. - Took awhile to get the project rolling. Was hoping to be done in Feb. at the latest and it carried on into May. Would I hire them again? - absolutely! Already planning our next remodel and they'll be the first I call. read more

I found Independent Remodeling through Yelp to remodel a bathroom in our home from 1916. Jim got back to me very quickly to set up a time to come see the space and promptly sent over a quote for the work, which my husband and I felt to be very reasonable. The end cost was spot on. Jim assigned a project manager, Brian, who was our go to contact throughout the project and who was a pleasure to work with. Both Jim and Brian were professional and very responsive throughout the project. I was also impressed with the work ethic of their crew once the work got started. All of their workers were friendly, pleasant, clean, and respectful of COVID concerns. The work that independent remodeling does really speaks for itself. The room looks incredible. This was not an easy job, even though it was a small space, because the floor was not level at all (old home problems!) and there was wallpaper that had to come down. I was impressed with the amount of time that was spent on making sure things were done correctly, and if I ever had a concern, it was taken seriously and addressed correctly and before the project was done. We had a challenging remodeling project - a full gut and rebuild of a condo bathroom in a 100-year-old building on the north side of Chicago (and it was the only bathroom in the unit!) Independent Remodeling did a fantastic job. Communication was fantastic. Quote and billing process was clear and transparent; communication was consistent and the project manager gave daily progress reports; they paid attention to detail and I was fine extending the project timeline at their insistence to do the job correctly. The end result was a beautiful, modern bathroom that was turned from the worst room in the condo to the best! Most impressive was the limited disruption. I expected to be living elsewhere or in shambles for the full extent of the project. All the tools and debris were well contained and the crew had a functional toilet for us every night. March 26, I cleared my calendar for Jim, the owner, to come into my home, tour my basement and take measurements. He also took measurements for a new patio. It is now May 13th and after multiple phone calls and email messages, we have not received the estimates that were promised to be sent to us within one week. One time I spoke with the owner on the phone the day before Good Friday, he stated he had already sent me the estimate via email - "Didn't you receive it". No. "I'll send it to you on Monday as I won't be in the office until then." OK. Nothing, nothing at all. In summary, if you want timely information, communication and an actual project to be started and finished, I do not recommend this company. read more

Independent Remodelers in a word: F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. We met with 8 remodeling companies before the onset of our project, and narrowed our choices down to 4 before we made our final decision. Although Independent Remodeling was not the least expensive, we had the most confidence in their ability to do the work. We were impressed with Dave (our project manager and GC) from the start and continued to be throughout the project. Dave was engaged, personable, knowledgeable, and completely stood behind the work his team did. Our project involved totally gutting our kitchen and bath (flooring, electrical, and plumbing), knocking down an interior wall and constructing a new one, construction and installation of a new bump-out window (including siding and roofing on said window overhang), and all of the details that come with a project of that size. The pros: The final cost was very close to their quote. When there was out of scope work to be done, we always received a full and thorough explanation and were given the option to accept or reject the additional work. The IR team is exceptional - Dave, Roman, Peter, Scott, Anthony and likely others whose names I cannot remember. Roman in particular is quite the craftsman and artisan. Each and every person who came to our home produced quality results and treated our house as if it were their own home. I cannot stress enough the pride that these men took in their work. Plus, they are all around good guys - the kind that you would totally have a beer with at the end of the day. On more than one occasion, I would come home from work and chat with them for 10 minutes or so. Genuinely nice people. They were obsessive about a clean work site, especially when they left in the evenings. Every evening before they cleared out, someone would vaccuum the entire place to make sure that it was clear of dust and debris. Very trustworthy. We left them alone in our house extensively, gave them the garage code, and never once gave it a second thought Most importantly, the quality of Independent Remodeling's work is fantastic. With other contractors, it has felt like 85% or 90% of the work was good, but there were little issues at the end of the job that gnawed at you later. Not with Independent Remodeling. The Independent Remodeling team either do the work beautifully the first time, or they correct it. And when IR did not feel like they have clear direction, instead of making assumptions and moving ahead, they always asked what to do. The cons: None. Seriously, none. Yes, there were a few rough patches but it was a total 1st floor renovation. It's NOT going to go completely smoothly 100% of the time. What matters is that Independent Remodeling delivered the work on time, within budget and with spectacular results. Did things go wrong? Yes. Were those things fixed? Yes. Are we happy with the results? Yes. I simply cannot sing high enough praises for Indepemdent Remodeling. Why you would choose another company is beyond me. Some advice on remodeling in general: Sometimes things will be installed in a way that is not quite what you wanted. There is absolutely no reason to freak out on your contractor -- it's fixable. I wish that I had been calmer earlier in the project because whenever something was not what we wanted (the position of a light fixture, for example), the guys corrected it. Whoever you choose will presumably be in your home for quite some time. Do yourself a favor and choose someone that you like. You will probably find their staff to be likeable as well. read more

Wife and I highly recommend INDEPENDENT REMODELING to renovate your bathrooms. Did a fantastic job renovating two bathrooms in our home. From our initial meeting with David to the completion of the job it was a very pleasant experience. David worked with us and our budget on what would be done to get the bathrooms my wife and I wanted. Once the plan was laid out techs Peter (or Piotr) and Roman went to work gutting the bathrooms and turning them into something very, very nice. These two gentlemen were very professional, cordial, and out and out nice guys. And of course, they did great work! We had a old bathroom that was done by the previous owner that was a handy man job. As with handy man jobs, you could see issues with it from any angle. We are selling our house, so we knew we needed to update the bathroom. Dave (our project manager) was great in the assessment phase and then during the project. We picked a time in Jan and his team hit the ground running and was able to complete the project on budget/time. Dave's guys were great to work with and even thou we hit a few unexpected events, worked with us to understand our options and how to move forward. Dave also stopped by thruout the project or called to make sure all was running smoothly. I would recommend Dave and the group to anyone with no hesitation. We now have a new bathroom that we love and will show great when we list it, but also get to enjoy it for the next few months. read more

I can't say enough good things about Independent Remodeling. I received quotes from several other companies to remodel our kitchen all of which told me a permit was not required, even for knocking down a wall. This didn't sound right to me and after doing some research myself, I determined that a permit was in fact was required if knocking down a wall. I was lucky enough to find Independent Remodeling on Yelp. Jim was extremely responsive and came out and gave me a quote for two different project options. I am so thankful that I found a company that was actually willing to do things right and not cut any corners. Throughout the whole process, Jim was extremely responsive and helpful, even after his crew determined that a wall in our kitchen was load bearing (after a different contractor told me it wasn't). Jim worked with me every step of the way to find a new layout we were happy with. His crew that performed the work was also excellent. Roman and George did great work and I was very impressed with their attention to detail. I also felt very comfortable with these two being in my home. I will definitely be using them again for any future remodeling projects. If we had used another company instead of Indepenndent Remodeling, our whole kitchen ceiling may very well be falling down! read more

We absolutely loved working with Jim, Brian, Roman and Harry during our kitchen renovation! Jim was quick to respond and come out to our home to give us a quote. Brian was a fantastic project manager and always communicating with us as the project evolved. He was quick to deliver solutions to problems we faced (there weren't that many) and is just an overall great guy. Roman and Harry (and George) were absolutely amazing - their work ethic was great each day they were at our home. They were respectful of us living in the basement during construction and always kept the work space clean. While we faced some minor delays during the project itself, Jim and Brian were always up front with what may come up to help manage expectations. Our project took about 8 weeks to complete and we could not be happier with everything! We had an excellent experience using Independent Remodeling. When we purchased our house, there was a significant amount of work that needed to be done; some was necessary to move in, and some was strictly cosmetic. To give you an idea of the scope, the job required mold remediation, tiling, electrical, hardwood flooring, painting, and drywall. Independent Remodeling was not only able to handle all of this, but they also did top quality work in a tight time frame (we had a window of a couple of months to get all of the work done). I cannot say how happy I am that Jim was able to make room for us on the schedule to ensure our house was ready when we needed it to be. It was clear from our initial meeting that Jim was extremely knowledgable and a true professional. He was very helpful in guiding us through the process, and was an excellent project manager. I've got plenty of great things to say about Independent Remodeling. I was given Dave's name by recommendation of a good friend. That friend did not let me down. Dave and team were quick to respond, gather a quote, and even get the job done within our timeline. By doing so, we were bumped to the front of the line, and were given quality treatment by Brian and his contracting team. While there were some delays, they ultimately had to do with things outside the control of Brian, Dave and team. Not to mention, we threw a great deal more work at them mid-project and without fail they delivered. On top of it all, we had to finance much of this job on a 0% interest credit card. Dave was more than willing to accommodate, and the payment schedule was more than fair. Had our kitchen remodeled and it looks fantastic. When we met with Jim to discuss or project he answered all of our questions and provided an easy to understand estimate. Our project manager Brian was always responsive to questions and kept the project on schedule. Our crew Roman and Alex were always on time and kept a clean work space. Once the cabinet order came it took only 5 weeks to complete the project. The attention to detail and high quality of workmanship resulted in a great finished product.
