I stopped by this place on a Friday and it was my first time visiting as well as my first time trying their beer(s). I was a little taken back at how low in ABV their beers were but that isn't a deal breaker by any means. In fact, out of the entire selection on tap, only two were higher than 5% and they both happened to be a staggering 9%. The interior is nice and very spacious. Cheers! read more

The first Saturday every month they open their doors and for $10 you get to try 3 pints of their brews and get a free glass with it. Warning there is no shade and by none I mean none. Alright first off, this place is tricky to find and thanks for nothing Yelpers! Because no one had tips for finding it. My tip is this - use your Google maps to find the nondescript office park area off Todd, then look for building 607. Just keep weaving around til you see the Independence trucks - then it's beer time! So we were a little miffed when we finally found it, but we immediately placated by the super friendly gal behind the bar. Tip #2 - from what I've read, first Saturday sounds awful (bring tents and chairs and be ready to sweat? No thanks). So do what we did and go FRIDAY when the tasting room is open 4-8! We got a table inside where it's nice and cool, even on August 1st, and enjoyed the same 3 beers and a sweet glass for $10 others have mentioned (actually got ours for $9 just for liking them on FB!) I was already a fan of the Austin Amber and am now a superfan of their new Pale Ale, whose name I can't quite recall. My gal is a way into all things IPA and Stash is one of her favs (not mine though). I never like white ales so the White Rabbit wasn't for me; others in my group liked it and I at least liked the White Rabbit glass :) All in all, great tasting room experience. No my favorite brewery in Austin, but I do give them credit for being involved in community events and being at numerous Yelp events! I haven't had a beer from Indy where I can say "damn, that is delish, I want another glass." It makes me sad to say that because I love supporting local brews, but life is too short to waste on bad beer. Not that their beers are BAD per se, just lacking depth of flavor and overall complexity. If I had to pick my favorite Indy beer, it would be a tie between the brown or amber. Nothing amazing about either, but consistent. In regards to the brewery itself, they do have open houses/tours the first Saturday of every month. It's free to get 3 samples (good size!) or you can buy a pint glass (with 3 pours) for $5 or something like that. The open house is fun though! There's a band, plenty of port-a-pottys and enough beer pouring stands. If you like their beer, you'll have a blast! read more

My venture to Austin was my first Independence Brewery visit. I was told they have a happening Saturday gathering that will include alot of people, dogs, live music, good beer and good times and all boxes were checked! $10 bucks will get you a pint glass and a wristband worth 3 full beers. Even though Independence may not be my favorite beer, I did enjoy the different styles they offered. Make sure to bring lawn chairs, beer koozies, friends and food. Showed up for a Friday tasting impromptu. Coming from MKE this is par for micro brew standard these days. Staff was well accommodated to let us have a few complimentary and then some. Let us lackadaisically stroll down the strip mall end towards some sun shine and sip while watching new employee learn the art of forklift. Pretty friendly open atmosphere although don't expect to be able to take a 6- pack home. One of the owners explained texas law prohibits selling on site, even a mere growler. Independence is one of the longest standing micros in Austin and expanding next door into a 10,000 sq foot space which looked promising. And about the beer .. Stash IPA cannot go wrong. Love, Love, Love this place. It's perfect for a casual night out or for some good old fashion day drinking. There is indoor and outdoor seating, both areas are pet friendly. Personally, I like sitting at the counter, because the brewistas (not sure what else to call them since their not quite bartenders and not really baristas) are knowledgeable and entertaining. All of the beers are pretty wonderful, but the Stash IPA is my favorite. Take a look at the menu because they often have season beers that they're trying to get rid of for $1 a can. While those $1 cans are good for you 3rd or 4th (maybe even 5th or 6th?) beer, I'd definitely start with one of their signature beers on tap. Also, check out their events on Facebook. We hosted a baby shower here and it was awesome! Yes, I know. Sounds odd. But it was a co-ed shower for a couple whose favorite thing to do is visit breweries and who has a lot of friends without kids. So it was perfect! Independence was helpful from the start when I reached out to inquire. Chloe and Josh both sold it for me! We held the party on a Sunday in January so it wasn't crazy busy which allowed us to have space to actually hold it. We had about 30 people. They let us bring in food, decorate, and do gifts and a game. They were so so accommodating! Plus all the guests were loving the access to all the great taps! And they even gave our group a tour of the brewery. I can't say enough how amazing they were. Great beer. Great casual brewery. Great staff. Great parking. Great great great! Cool brewery tucked away in a wearhouse. It can be a little hard to find from the road as it is behind retail. But once you arrive, there is indoor and outdoor seating. There are occasional food trucks. Plenty of games including jenga. I like the chill vibe. This is a great place for an afternoon drink or three. The bartenders know their stuff. Ask as many questions as you like regarding the beer choices. You can do tasting flights or go right to the pint. I prefer the Stash IPA which is one of my local favorites. Other beers are good too. This was exactly what I'm used to. A large and hot warehouse where they're actually brewing and serving beer. This is no frills so if you're looking for somewhere fancy to drink beer this isn't it. They don't serve food, but there was a food truck out front when we went. We tried a sample of everything, especially because one of our Fasten drivers said how good and popular the Stash IPA is. As soon as he raved about it we knew we'd have to check it out. I tried a few different beers there and there wasn't anything that was awful. In fact, the beer that I kinda didn't prefer out of all the beers I tries was the Austin Amber and it was still a pretty good beer. There just wasn't enough typical Amber notes of caramel, toffee, etc. to make it stand out to me. The Stash IPA was good. It was well balanced and not completely overhopped. The Convict Hill was my favorite which says a lot because typically when I drink oatmeal stouts on warm days they never taste good to me. I think I liked this one because it wasn't as heavy as normal oatmeal stouts but it still packed flavor. This was a cool place. read more

There was a time not so many years ago, when craft brews were few and far between and TABC laws were even weirder that their First Saturday events would attract legions of craft beer fans. It's a lot more sedate and less crowded now. Relaxed atmosphere. Their beers are widely available. No great reason to visit the taproom unless you are there just for the outing. Haven't seen any beers lately at the taproom that aren't also available at your favorite beer retailer. But that said, friendly staff, laid back atmosphere, good beer. read more

Finally made it out to Independence on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It was easier to find than I expected and there was plenty of parking. Nothing impressive here, as it is in a warehouse/industrial area. There is inside and outside seating and since the weather wasn't scorching hot, sitting inside was very tolerable. We all ordered our own flights for $7 which I found to be super reasonable. In our group of 4, none of us enjoy IPAs. If you're into IPAs they offer a ton, but since we don't like anything even close to an IPA, we had some difficulty. I've had several Independence beers before, like the year around ones. Those weren't really new to me. My favorite is the Oatmeal Stout, but they were out of it. I also really enjoyed the RedBud Berliner Weisse with cucumber so I ordered a pint of that for $4. Overall, I enjoyed their taproom and the variety of beers offered on draft. I did not notice any food trucks here so don't come hungry. This is a solid brewery to bring friends and try out some craft beers. read more

Not only do they brew some of my favorite beer in all the land (Bootlegger Brown and Jasperilla I'm looking at you) but their First Saturday is so much fun. Getting a tour of the brewery would be a treat in and of itself, but the free beer makes it a must-do. Even if you have kids, you can bring them along, because it doesn't get rowdy up in there, and they might get a kick out of the enormous refrigerators and whatnot. Or maybe they'll just spend the time playing with Jasper, the dog, In any case, don't let having the wee ones in tow deter you from experiencing First Saturday, if you haven't. And in case you don't know, First Saturday is when they open the brewery to the public and give a tour (the first Saturday of every month, hence the name.) . They also give you free beer. Oh dear, where to begin. I guess with the beer, which is the very definition of mediocre. It seems that with so many small breweries popping up on every corner these days, it's getting harder and harder to find one that stands out. Texas is awash in average-to-below average beer, with a few shining stars, like Peticolas, Jester King, Live Oak, Community and Real Ale. You can do better than this place without even breaking a sweat. And their tap room is certainly nothing to write home about either. Tim O. introduced me to Independence Brewing Co. almost a year ago. Yay for the Tim O! They have these open house events where you can visit the brewery and they typically have some food vendors and live music and picnic benches set up. It's one of the best ways to waste three or four hours on a Saturday. I'm not a huge fan of their Pale, but I really did enjoy their Bootlegger Brown Ale. The brewery is located in the back of a business park. It was a little hard to find. We appreciated the Yelp tip to look for the Independence Brewery trucks to know when you're close. It's more in the back and there's plenty of parking with a short walk. They have a big open area with seating available at picnic tables, high tables, or the bar for enjoying their beer. They open the garage door in nice weather and it felt like a covered patio. They have their beer menu, which you can find online. Since there is no food, it seemed very BYOF. Some people brought little lawn chairs for their kids or board games. We didn't do any tour and were ill-prepared with food. We picked up a small bag of bean chips from the counter for less than a dollar. Friday afternoon was not very busy and we could drink and converse peacefully. No live music or food truck when we came. Patrons were pretty chill and friendly. There's a huge piece of art up on the wall featuring one of the illustrations they're known for best. The unisex bathrooms were very clean and had showers, if you find yourself getting dirrrty. read more

Independence Brewing is a laid back brewery tap room in south Austin. The staff is on par with the best in town. They are very attentive and very efficient in getting people their pours quickly, even with a line. If you haven't been to Independence in awhile(or ever), get down there and check them out. There are many tap room exclusives that you may not be aware of. All delicious. They have a permanent food truck called Lotus Joiint on site that serves delicious 'tacos con chutney'. Often they have live bands which is always fun. Like most breweries they also have a variety of board games to pass the time while you enjoy your tasty malty beverage. What a good, fun way to get the word out on your microbrewery- throw a party the first Saturday of every months, 1-3 pm, and upon arrival, give your 21+ guests 3 wooden nickels, redeemable for three half pints of sample beers- and give them their choice to try the Amber, IPA, Wheat, etc. Just to keep things interesting, sell pint glasses with the brewery's name on it for $5, and fill those up instead of the half pints, and allow folks to bring the pint glasses month after month. That, my friend, is good business, especially when paired with incredible weather. We got a tour of the brewery (you wouldn't believe the secrets I know how about barley and hops), had a great time doing something different, and had a couple free beers. I'll be back. read more

I've only knew of Independence Brewing from trying their Native Texan elsewhere, which is an okay beer (not amazing) because it's a Pilsner. But their Brewery is awesome!! They have about 18 beers on tap. Their Gose and Cream Ales were damn good. Last Friday of the month they have a live acoustic session and every Friday evening they do $2 craft cans. The food truck lost power from the storm the night before so we'll definitely be back to try the food. The space was perfect for a chill night with tasty beer and live music. read more

I am loathe to miss a First Saturday at Independence Brewery. In fact, I was a little bit upset to miss July's for an out-of-town wedding. There is no where else I'd rather be on the first Saturday of the month. Here is why it's awesome, in numerical order: 1. It's CHEAP! They don't advertise this well when you're in line, but you can go in for free if you don't buy the $6 pint glass. For free, instead of three pints, you get three "sample" size (ie a cup slightly smaller than a red party cup) beers of your choice. Even if you get the glass, you're still getting three beers for $6. 2. It's so low key! Friends, dogs, lawn chairs. Done. 3. Did I mention it was cheap?! As for the actual beer, I'm far from a beer expert, but I enjoy beer. Real beer. And I think the beer here is just fine. Maybe it's not exceptional, but it's not like it's expensive, either. Their summer brew, the Rood ("red"), is my favorite, and I wish it wasn't a seasonal. But alas, it is. Here are some tips: 1. Do not forget your lawn chairs and your sunscreen. It's all cement, folks. 2. Be prepared to Port-a-Potty it up. In the cooler months, guys go behind the building (perhaps not legally), but in the summer people sit back there to get some shade and in general, it's frowned upon to pee in front of people you don't know. Unfortunately for us ladies, we have to go in the port-a-potty all year round. 3. If you think it's too hot, you can bring your little tent things to sit under. You know the ones with 4 legs and a top. I obviously don't own one of these such things, or maybe I'd know what they are actually called. Or maybe not. 4. There can be a long line to get into the drinking area, which opens at 1, though it moves quickly enough. I like to get there a little early so as to not wait in a long line at the beer station, too. 5. Parking can be a little tough if you get there after 1. I have a secret spot, and unfortunately, Yelp friends, it wouldn't be a secret spot if I shared it. BUT, seek and you shall find. 6. Kids are welcome, but you don't really see kids older than toddlers. And now I'm counting down the days until August! read more

The first Saturday of each month has the tours and the beer tasting. For just six dollars, you will be given a glass and a wristband that will allow you 3 glasses of beer. If you don't wish to pay, then you can sample the beers for free in the smaller cups. It is up to you. I saw the most awesome dog, the white pit bull named "Killa" there. There were many dogs there and they were NOT on leashes but this was not a problem. Everyone was very responsible and in great spirits, pun intended. The tour is fun! Try the many varieties of beer. One of the beers is named after one of the dogs and I thought it was kind of fitting because it tasted a little doggie. The favorite beers of the people I went with were the Wheat Beer and the Bootlegger. There are several kinds to sample though. I tried the Amber and it was fantastic. There is really something there for everyone and the people running the show here are truly awesome and really care about what they are creating. Definitely bring chairs, your dogs, your kids, yes, I had a wonderful conversation with an obviously sober 10 year old that was fantastic so it is allowed for the kids to be able to come along too. Seriously you will see a sea of all different ages of people there. There was a band there. People pretty much sit in the parking lot like area and drink, converse, take the tour, etc. If you have not done this yet and you enjoy beer or at least good conversation, you should put this at the top of your list. I can't give a place that has been giving me free beers just for showing up for 3 years anything but 5 stars. When we first heard of the first Saturday brewery tour with free samples, we thought we'd head over and check it out. At that time, it was my group of friends and maybe 20 others...flash forward to now and there are hundreds of people hanging out there every Saturday and there are bands and vendors giving out meat pies. It turns out that a lot of people like free, delicious beer. My tips for enjoying it there, even with the large crowd and long lines is to be patient and realize that you're getting free beer. Bring folding chairs and maybe a board game (beating Natalie at Hive is a personal favorite activity at Independence). The place is very dog friendly, the owners even named one of their beers after their dog Jasper (the Jasperilla) and they have another dog Indy who I confirmed was named both after the company and after Indiana Jones (the first three). Parking is getting to be a hassle so be sure to show up early and stake your claim. As Tracy L. said, during those blazing summer months, be sure to go on the tour so you can check out the refreshing cooler that holds all of their chilled beer. We came here for the first time with a friend from out of town after hearing good reviews. We liked the atmosphere, and there was a cool band playing outside. However, we had an extremely unpleasant experience with one of the bartenders. I'm not sure if she was just not well trained or very new, but she wasn't very knowledgeable about many of the beers y'all have on tap. Then, we decided to order a pint of the Convict Hill Stout for $4. It was listed on the menu as $4/pint, but she refused to give us a full pint of the beer. When we asked her why we weren't receiving a full pint even though the menu clearly states $4 per pint for this beer, she responded very rudely and refused to fill up the glass. Eventually we gave up speaking with her. Overall, even though the beer was great, the experience with the staff was overwhelmingly negative and unpleasant. Would suggest training some of the bartenders in the basics of customer service. read more

Upon first glance, I had already passed judgement and deemed this place not worthy of spending an entire Saturday afternoon at. After a couple Oatmeal Stouts, I changed my mind. I'll let you slide this time, Lilly. The rain let up, and I didn't even care about the mugginess after a while. The music was decent. The concrete warehouse area was big enough for Lilly to run around and play with both cool people and friendly dogs alike. The food was good; I chowed down on a jackalope (jack rabbit and antelope) hot dog while Lilly looked on wistfully. The beer was excellent ($6 for a pint glass and 3 servings of beer). I mean, really, how can you not like a south east Austin brewery that is close to work?? I've only been at nights (not for any of the weekend fun), but I do love it so. There have been several different food trucks when I've been, and none of them disappoint. Not that that's what this is about, but the food sure does help. There's enough space for a fun band to play. The pour-ers are super nice and helpful and even offer small samples before committing to a full glass. This place is a little tricky finding due to construction on the road so beware. Once you arrive it's filled with plenty of benches and chairs to sit at. They have several selections of beer on tap. I tried the beer flight with 4 separate beers. Ranging from Stash IPA, Power and Light Pale to the Amber Ale. The IPA and Amber were my personal favorite. Flights were $6 which I thought was a good price. Now that summer time is approaching it got pretty warm inside. There was music playing which was a nice touch. OK, so I am certainly no beer geek. I cannot distinguish between hoppiness and bitterness. I have even less of a clue what balance is. When my brother told me that a beer needed sweetness, I looked at him with a blank look. I will say that I do love drinking. Beer does the body good. Have you ever heard of the survival of the fittest principle? Same thing applies: alcohol kills off the weakest brain cells because they are the first ones to go. Thus, Independence Brewing's tour is an excellent way to jump start your brain cell weeding. It is hard to make it an engagement to get here, as it only happens the first Saturday of the month.. but let me tell you, it does not get much better than $6 for 3 pints and a souvenir glass. The only negative is that other people think that it is a good deal too. Each pint requires a 20 minute wait in line. This brings me to my next pro. You can actually bring everything you need with your beer. Picnic blankets, dogs, snacks; pretty much everything BUT beer. Again, they provide you with beer, so no worries. Head on over to Independence to get you drink on between the inconvenient hours of 1-3PM on the first Saturday of the month. Woohoo! Beer on! Independence is a great hometown brewery. I first had the opportunity to try their beer at Eeyore's birthday party a couple of years ago. I liked it so much I looked 'em up on the web to see where I could buy more. At the time they only offered keg beer much like Live Oak brewery. Shortly after I found out they were started a bottling operation. Now you can find their beer at a number of places including HEB. I met a couple at the Black Star Coop beer social this evening who reminded me of some of the fun I've had at the Independence anniversary parties. Those are a blast and I'll try to remember to post the next one in the events section when it comes up. They mentioned being frequent attenders of the Independence brewery tours that are offered on the first Saturday of each month. Sounds like those are mini versions of the anniversary party so I'll have to check them out. The beer is really good and if you haven't tried it you need to. I hate writing bad reviews. It's so unpleasant. That being said, let's get this over with. We arrived at the Independence Brewing First Saturday event early (12:45pm), as instructed, prepared to wait in line or something, but there was no line at all. We paid $10 per person to get a glass for three beer samples. We knew to bring our own lawn chairs, but we had no idea there would be so very few places to find relief from the scorching August sun. We headed inside to get our first samples where the nice girl who poured my beer suggested that we try out the ginger flavored beer that was at one of the outside stations; however, when we went looking for it we discovered that it was not available at any of the stations (we were duped!). They mark your wristband every time you get a refill, but they didn't mark any of our group for our third beer; even so, we left after our third beers because wanted to get the hell outta there. While the beer itself is alright, and it's nice to sit outside and enjoy live music while drinking a cold beverage, this event needs some serious work. For starters, try taking out the trash. The event is in the middle of a parking lot where there are trash dumpsters EVERYWHERE. There were at least 2 construction-sized dumpsters and 3-4 normal sized dumpsters. In some places of the parking lot, the stench was unbearable. If you're one of those people (like me) who hate taking your drink into the bathroom because it's disgusting (all odors are particulate!), then imagine drinking next to a dumpster. Sick. It was so sick. And there was only one bathroom for the hundreds of people there (what?!). On the bright side, the smell was so bad that it allowed us to forget about the fact that we were in the middle of an industrial park clinging to the side of a building for shade (why can't they set up some tents for people?). I learned in an advertising class that the reason that brands sponsor things like sporting events is so you can associate that brand with (hopefully) a good memory from the event. Well, now when I think of Independence Brewing I'll remember that afternoon I stood in the middle of a parking lot that smelled like trash when it was hot as balls outside. As long as all those dumpsters are in the same area as the event, the event is going to stink ... literally. Maybe if you go in cooler weather the heat won't cook the trash, so it won't smell *as* bad? One can hope. read more

Hubby thought they had a great selection of beer for all tastes and the atmosphere was great for a brewery. They had lots of picnic tables inside and out and the warehouse atmosphere (including a very well trained dog that was hanging out there) was perfect for a brewery. They also offered plenty of board games and a Foosball table for people to use and enjoy. read more
