Tried a new place in Mesa as it was close to the Mesa Art Theatre to see the show "Chicago". Tom, our server was pleasant and efficient. Went for Happy Hour and ordered every appetizer on the HH menu and enjoyed a glass of wine while dining. All of the apps were delicious. Chicken croquettes a little on the spicy side but very good. Deviled eggs were creamy. Flatbread pizzas were flavorful as was the hummus. Enjoyed the spinach and the Cesear salads which were fresh. Also Ordered a burger which was huge! Donuts made from scratch, not heavy or greasy, perfectly seasoned, flavored, and fried, and I normally don't like donuts (don't judge me). The beers were also paired perfectly; plus, live music that set that "Saturday afternoon" tone. Definitely stop by, they have a huge variety for even the pickiest of eaters (this is NOT an Italian-specific restaurant -- it's considered "American" but they've got so many themes and inspirations), not to mention a great selection of hand-picked beers and wines. This place was amazing!! Best burger I've ever had in my life! went perfectly well with the red sangria! Service was was on point and the owner Cindy was the sweetest person ever! I'm definitely glad I stopped by for the lunch special they have a wide range of different foods but I personally had the Green Chile burger and had it well done, no pink but still juicy! Coming here for brunch was a great idea!! Our server promptly greeted us at the door. She was warm and inviting. She gave great suggestions and tips. The drinks came at a regular pace, which is always nice! The food was amazing! We all had something different (eggs benedict/blueberry pancakes/omelet/ 2 eggs your way). This used to be the Mesa Eatery and was dying a slow death. The new owners have turned it around 100%. I have only had breakfast here, which has improved a little. The prices are still astonishingly low, and the service is reasonable (really depends on how busy they are). The atmosphere in here is fantastic - they gutted and rebuilt this place. It no longer looks like a rundown 1950's Big Boy and now resembles a chic wine bar. Have you ever had breakfast on a couch? The service was good but the food was exceptionally bad. The smell inside of the restaurant should have caused us to turn around the moment we walked in. We were a party of 9 and not one of us was happy with our meal. As one example, the risotto accompanying the tuna was inedible. Undercooked and crunchy, way over seasoned with ginger. The quality and flavor of all 9 meals was far below what the reviews here would suggest. Yikes! Don't waste your time! Food quality was terrible (I ordered the ahi dinner and got 5 tiny and stringy pieces for $23!) and the bartender Cameron was incredibly rude and clearly drunk. The servers kept running into the kitchen yelling that "the smell must becoming from the kitchen & it shouldn't be smelling like that!" Also, there was no one else in the whole restaurant during prime dinner time - I should have taken that as a sign! This place looks like it's close to going out of business, and the only people who like it must think Dennys is fine dining or just like getting drunk on bad wine. A gem on the west end of downtown Mesa on Main. I am never disappointed by the service, food or drink. They have happy hour every night they are open including weekends. Great appetizers which could easily be a light supper in combination. I highly recommend the pan seared ahi tuna with ginger rice and baby bok choy. The antelope Burger is awesome. All the burgers are very good. During the summer months they have a great wine tasting on Wednesdays. In addition to their extensive wine menu, they routinely feature five or six craft beers on tap including one on Nitro. The room has very good acoustics for occasional live music which fills the room without overwhelming. read more

First time at Il Vinaio but had to do take out due to other commitments. Arrived at 4:30pm on a Wednesday and it was deserted. Hostess obviously greeted me right away and accommodated me with a gluten free menu. Since I did take out, she warned me that GF pasta takes 20 minutes. No prob there so she offered water during my wait. Dinner arrived right on time: 20 minutes after she turned in the ticket. We ordered Classic Bruschetta on GF bread. It was toasted just right with herbaceous tomatoes on top. For entrees we got the Pasta Vinaio with GF pasta and Chicken Roulade (no gluten adjustments needed.). Each dish was well prepared with saucy goodness, goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes. The total was $43 for two entrees and an app but for hard-to-find gluten free Italian, it was worth the price. We will return when we have time to have a good sit down meal. read more

Went here for the first time with a friend to have a meal before seeing a play at the Mesa Arts Center. For those of you who like to use the light rail, this is one of the places that you can get to easily now that the rail goes through downtown Mesa. The restaurant is in a building that was obviously something else before but they have made the interior their own. I'm not much of a wine drinker but a nice selection of beers and all the beers on draft are $5 - a more than reasonable price for a craft brew and the management, when I ordered an IPA, even brought me a sample of the local IPA from the brewery down the street, Desert Eagle Brewery. My friend had the pork cutlet over a risotto and I had something else which does not seem to be on the online menu, but it was also good. I found this to be a perfect place to relax and enjoy some nice food and a drink or two before an event at the Mesa Arts Center and I'm sure it will be where I go again next time I go to a show. read more

This is a new restaurant in downtown Mesa (I know... really?) that from the outside looks slightly better than a Denny's in South Phoenix. We were a bit skeptical about even getting out of our car because the bar next to it didn't seem to have the friendliest patrons. The inside is very inviting, warm and unique. But, where was everybody? The place was empty and we were immediately seated at 7PM on a Saturday night. Local artists' paintings are found on the walls which are just down right cool. A live band played a nice array of jazz but were soft enough that we could still hear each other talk. Our waiter, who was also the sommelier, was spot on with recommendations of wine, starters and entrees. Service was outstanding throughout our whole dining experience. We started with the Classico Bruschetta and Caprese Salad. The Bruschetta was delicious and didn't have that typically over toasted bread. The Caprese Salad was equally as good and the Mozzarella was fresh. For entrees we had the il Vinaio Pomodoro Angel Hair Pasta and Buttered Gnocchi. The pasta was light and refreshing for a pasta dish. The gnocchi, which are typically heavy, were surprisingly light as well. The portion size was also just right. Our friends had the Pork Chop and Rigatoni. The Pork Chop was huge and could be easily shared. Although I didn't try either dish, I was told they were amazing. The only unfortunate part of the evening was that we were all too full to have desert... we'll skip the fresh bread basket next time. So, would I recommend this restaurant to my friends and family? Most definitely. I hope you give this place a shot and have a similar experience. And, I hope they get enough business to stay afloat because I plan on visiting again and again. read more

Hadn't been there in a while but thought it would be fun to take my daughter before a concert at the Arts Center. Food was good as it usually is, but truly disappointed in the service. The restaurant was less than half full but when my daughter asked for something to be taken off of what she ordered we were told "we don't allow changes on busy nights with events" Busy? There were as many empty tables as full tables! They pride themselves on cooking each dish fresh, wouldn't that make it easier to take something off? What if it was allergy related? Would I just be told too bad if that was the case? To top it off, when the waitress asked if she should put the order in anyway, I said yes and guess what... a half hour later when the order came my daughter's meal wasn't there. I got a "sorry I must have misunderstood" and that was it. Very disappointed and likely won't come back anymore. read more
