Had a wonderful dinner at Il Brigante this past Friday night. Food is top notch...we had the pasta w/eggplant, brussels sprouts, a salad with fennel and pears, and a side of potatoes. The two of us pretty much finished everything, it was so good! Service is friendly and food came out quickly despite the crowds. The restaurant loses one star because it's absolutely packed to the gills and really noisy. You can barely walk between tables and you have to yell across the table to be heard. The Calamari was another strong dish, not overly breaded with flavor that slowly builds as you eat it. Moist, seasoned, and cooked really well. The Wild Caught Salmon tasted very fresh and natural. The Salad with apple and arugula had a tangy freshness that became weirdly addictive. The Pizza was decent overall, though the cheese slid off a bit and the crust leaned harder than I'd prefer. The Shrimp had good flavor but still came with the skin on, which may or may not be your thing. The Avocado Salad was okay but didn't stand out as much compared to the rest of the meal. Desserts: The Cannoli was excellent with the perfect balance of crunch, sweetness, and cream. The Crème Brûlée was soft and creamy, and the Chocolate Pizza was fun and indulgent, basically chocolate layered over pizza bread with a sticky, mouthwatering finish. Came here with a party of 8 expecting a nice Italian dinner. What we accidentally booked instead was an immersive theater experience called Waiting for Gnocchi. Let me start with the positives: the food was actually pretty solid when it eventually arrived. The pizza was good, the pasta was good, and overall the kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. Unfortunately, we aged visibly before getting to enjoy it. Our mains took nearly TWO HOURS to arrive. Not exaggerating. At one point we started measuring time not in minutes, but in "tables seated after us who had already eaten, paid, and left." Multiple groups came in after us, ordered, ate entire meals, discussed the fall of Western civilization, and departed while we were still staring hopefully into the middle distance waiting for appetizers. Speaking of appetizers: some arrived during the main course like surprise DLC content. Others simply vanished into the universe entirely. I assume they're still circling lower Manhattan looking for parking. Service was bizarrely robotic. One server approached the table several times without speaking or making eye contact, like an NPC whose dialogue tree hadn't loaded yet. We genuinely weren't sure if he worked there, was deeply disappointed in us personally, or was communicating through interpretive silence. The whole evening had the energy of an Italian restaurant being operated by people who had heard vague rumors of how restaurants function. Again, the frustrating part is that the food itself was good. If this review were based solely on taste, it would be a very different story. But dining out is also about experience, timing, and not wondering whether your entrée is being hand-crafted in Tuscany and rowed across the Atlantic. First day in New York, and my wife had a great idea: ask the people at the hotel for a recommendation. We were told how amazing Il Brigante is. The storefront is small, and we likely would not have found it otherwise. After being seated, we struck up a conversation with a woman at the next table. She told us that she loves this place, and she comes here as often as she possibly can. And her son is meeting her for the seventh year in a row for his birthday. Those are some solid recommendations before we took our first bite. Having eaten here, I can understand why this place inspires so much passion. Freshly baked, complementary bread was served with a balsamic reduction in olive oil. This arrived at the same time as an excellent Caesar salad. This is the sort of bread that you want to savor, which we would have done if the pasta weren't served so quickly. The salad was simple, but flawless. I can't remember thinking about how fresh the lettuce was in a salad before, but I thought that as I mixed the thick dressing with the beautiful Romaine leaves. The pasta is not only served quickly, but it was hot. And, I do mean hot. I can't remember the last time I got pasta anywhere that was served this freshly from the pan. The Farfalle alla Campagnola is bowtie pasta served with mild Italian sausage, sun-dried tomatoes, and broccoli rabe, tossed in a white wine and garlic sauce. The pasta itself has a nice chew to it, and the balance with the other elements in the bowl is wonderful. The only thing stopping me from wanting to eat every bit of it was wanting to have some of wife's Fettuccini alla Bolognese. Unlike the bland look-alikes from lesser restaurants, the beef is rich and flavorful. And, the fettuccine is made with the same care as the other pasta here. I found the serving size to be perfect, but my wife couldn't finish hers. We don't have a microwave at our hotel, but we still picked at the cold pasta until every bit of it was gone. My partner and I visited Il Brigante with reservation, and upon our arrival, we were asked to wait outside the building because a private party had booked the entire inside restaurant. We waited 20 minutes to be seated, watching as the staff were actively placing new tables and seats in their already crowded outside seating area. It's my belief that in an effort to ensure as much profit from the night on top of their private party reservation, Il Brigante staff delivered extremely poor service. We barely received enough time to look at the menus before the waitress came up to us and asked for our orders. It is important to note that our order included an appetizer. Bread was brought out, and then for the next 1.5 hours, the staff never checked in with us again. We watched as numerous tables who were seated after us and in larger parties received not only their appetizers, but their entrees. When we finally asked the waitress what the status of our order was, she had no idea what we had ordered nor what was going on. Her and two other staff members approached us, asked what we had ordered, and then searched around to see what had happened. They eventually admitted that the order had never been placed. Their attempt to make things right was to simply place the order and rush it. We had no faith in their assurances after an hour and a half of waiting. We left the restaurant. If they had made a true effort to reconcile things (ie. a discounted meal, free dessert, a free drink), rather than assuring us they would rush the order (and perhaps sacrifice the quality of the food in doing so), we would have felt the customer service was better. Mistakes happen, but as it stands I find it incredibly poor service to not only fail to check on a table at all in the 1.5 hours we were made to wait, but to do nothing to remediate the situation. read more

Very tasty food in a small yet incredibly cozy restaurant. This spot is perfect for a date night or a casual dinner with family. This restaurant is very small and cozy with a few outdoor tables. It's very close to the Seaport. Service was ok but a little pushy. The pizza we had as an appetizer was just meh...OK. My grilled chicken breast was unfortunately tough and dry. The green salad was good and had a tasty vinegarette dressing. Both pastas were amazing but I liked the rigatoni more (I may be biased though because I do love pink sauce)! As soon as we walked in, my partner and I were seated by a lively and friendly host, but problems arose as soon as we sat down. Service: The waitress helping us gave my partner and I attitude when we needed a little more time deciding what to order (this was the very first time she asked if we were ready to order) and to have a bottle of sparkling water instead of tap. I'm guessing it wasn't an off day after all. She was just off for us. All the other gentlemen that we interacted with were pleasant and friendly, so it's not a restaurant thing; it's definitely a person thing. Ambiance: Their outdoor setting is quite cozy and romantic looking. We didn't get to enjoy it, though, because we walked in too late. But the inside is equally as cozy and romantic. The brick stone walls and dim lighting adds to the coziness of it all. Food: The carbonara wasn't bad, but flavor wise, it was lacking. Definitely not cheesy enough. But most importantly, it was lacking a 'wow' factor because the dish tasted dead. The chicken and sausage with roasted potatoes and green beans (blanking on the Italian name): the chicken was breaded and the sauce it was coated in made me think I was actually having Chinese food. The only things that reminded me that I was having an Italian dish were the sausages, potatoes, and location I was in. We actually ended up preferring eating outdoors since the indoors area seemed more crowded with a tighter table space. Food-wise, we all unanimously enjoyed the Brigante pizza, which had a nice balance from the prosciutto and arugula topping. We'd skip the Funghi e Tartufo next time - it was more of a regular mushroom pizza that barely had any truffle flavor or aroma to it. I really loved the salad (insalate), the tomatoes were fresh and juicy and I thought it was dressed just right - not too soggy or salty. Definitely order this to add some freshness to your order! We went last night and decided to eat dessert and enjoy two hot molten lava cakes, we waited for at least 20 minutes until we asked the waiter when the food would be done, apparently, "It's in the oven." After another 5 minutes the cakes finally came out. A nice portion of ice cream, but the cake did not look good. It looked look they had just bought and heated it up. A molten lava cake is gooey in the middle, this tasted so rich that it was not enjoyable! Hard as a rock and tasted super dry. Do not order this if you are actually aware of what a lava cake should taste like. The ice cream tasted good though. I can't speak for the food, as we only ordered dessert. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. I have lived in the financial District for over 10 years and always try to patronize local restaurants and have eaten and ordered delivery from/at this establishment more times than I can count. Tonight my order did not arrive- I called repeatedly and was told they had a large party and too bad. This was after 1 and 1/2 hours. I was told to wait another 1/2 hour- so 2 hours from order or they would cancel because kitchen just hadn't gotten to my order yet. This is unacceptable. Especially considering, that during the pandemic we made sure order from this establishment at least once a week from their restaurant website to make sure they had business and didn't have to pay third party fees and instead they felt it was more important to cater to one time tourist customers.
