Plenty of staff in the store to help you find and purchase. We had a 10' van that wouldn't fit in the parking garage, so we were told to go to the loading dock and customer service to let them know to deliver thru the loading dock. There isn't a path to customer service from the loading dock without having to walk on Stevenson (which smells like urine and has people sleeping on the sidewalk on a Sunday afternoon). So, finally make it to customer service and waited 30 mins while ONE customer service representative worked thru the queue in line. On a Sunday afternoon, ONE (nice) customer representative to help everyone picking up orders, returning, and anything else for which someone needs to go to customer service. Then, walked all the way back around to the loading dock, thru the urine smell and sleeping people and the order wasn't delivered via the loading dock. So I walked all the way around AGAIN and finally delivery. IKEA has plenty of security guard in front of the building and needs to work on cleaning up the street behind the building. read more

Can this new IKEA be *too* modern? What I love about going to IKEA is going into the decorated rooms, shopping in the downstairs warehouse floor with all the small goodies, and eating Swedish meatballs at the restaurant. Somehow the SF IKEA had a different vibe than the other IKEAs I've been to (Emeryville and Palo Alto). First, there weren't the typical rooms to enter. The layout was really confusing. In fact, I had a hard time figuring out how to even ENTER! I took the elevator to the floor but it led me to the door that said "Exit" in giant lifesize letters. We looked around and could not find another door. After asking someone, they said we should just come in through the Exit because it all too confusing. I'll say! At the restaurant, the biggest difference is you don't interact with a human. AT. ALL! You order at a kiosk, wait at a table, and when your food is ready, they call you up at one of the two counters, and there's your food -- all without even talking to a human! So odd! It was very dehumanizing and felt cold. Like the cooks were right there talking to each other but they don't even acknowledge your existence, even if you're standing there across the counter. **TIPS** - The entrance to the underground parking is behind the IKEA. It's hard to find but it's there! - You can get your parking ticket stamped on B2. Just bring your receipt. You need to spend a minimum to get it validated ($15, I think??) - If you have a IKEA Family card, you get some freebies, like free coffee, so if you don't have one yet, sign up for one when you're there. If you are expecting a full-size IKEA, the SF IKEA in Union Square isn't that. It's not really meant for furniture shopping, more for smaller IKEA items, gadgets, and a bit of inspiration. They do have a small restaurant upstairs, but it's just a limited version of what you would find at a regular IKEA. It honestly feels more like a quick browse stop than a place to fully furnish your home or office. If you're planning to actually shop for the bigger project items and take things home the same day, you're better off heading to IKEA Emeryville or their East Palo Alto location. One thing to also note is the store hours are limited too. When I went last week, their hours were 11am to 7pm and not the usual 10am start and later finish. I went around 10am thinking I could grab a quick bite at the Saluhall, but it didn't open until 11am too. There is a parking garage right behind the building, but it's not free. read more

The click & collect timed appointments are mere suggestions. They will not have your order ready on time, even if none of the other spaces in the "click and collect" lot are occupied for the entire length of your window. When you call for an update after the window has passed you only get to speak to an AI that does not tell you anything you can't already see on the website. Additionally, when your time finally does come, the website is broken, and you cannot check in via the link. You must exit your car and go upstairs, completely negating the entire idea of click & collect. read more

Pleasantly surprised how nice their food court was. Japanese inspired with a very open space plan. When I was there on the second floor a large gathering of trading card enthusiasts. It's also great for remote work. There plenty of options for food. Unfortunately there were any Swedish meatballs available when I got there. The department store seems fine. It's a bit smaller than the Emeryville one or it seems. I didn't see much staff wondering around guess it's more of a self discovery shopping experience. Value is ok. The restaurant is poorly run. They closed it so the staff could go to lunch. We were told it would re-open at 3pm. Then we were told 3:15pm. Then 3:20pm. Then it opened at 3:30pm. But the order kiosks weren't working. They had been turned off. We waited close to 10 minutes for them to come back online. Frustrating experience. read more

It's my birthday. Time to use my birthday coupon, thank you IKEA. Alas it is no longer good on the meatballs, lingonberries or anything that is food. I do see they have the Swedish Princess cake. It is pink not green. I'll be getting the real thing in Stockholm soon. But I really wanted to use my birthday gift towards those meatballs. Getting TO the store, just past 5th St is alot cleaner than it has been. Inside the store, it is clean but I found it harder to find specific items that I was on the search for. Wine glasses are a steal but I thought some of the kitchen gadgets were pricey. And it took a long time to find a decorative pillow that was in stock. It's pretty but too pink for our small condo. Some furniture scream IKEA cheap, but there are plenty of good furniture finds that will hold up well. I'm thinking about a bed, a dresser, a night stand, a large rug,and a white leather sofa that we have had for YEARS that look great and bring a smile to my face. And my cat loved those little kids plush toys. When we were there, there were alot of unpacked boxes which surprised me but perhaps they don't have much storage to keep things not quite ready to go on display. Plenty of security but didn't see any workers except at self checkout. I like that San Francisco has an IKEA. Emeryville and Palo Alto are too inconvenient for me. There are plenty of finds that won't break the budget. And some of the "apartment displays" will give you ideas on how to organize and live in a small square footage. We were in the area early for a show and decided to check out the IKEA store located on Market St. between 5th and 6th Sts. The store is smaller city style format with 52,000 sq ft over three floors. The store items are focused on the urban lifestyle. The selection was limited compared to the Emeryville store, where I normally shop. At Emeryville, the store is about 300,000 sq ft or about 5 times the size. The restaurant here is smaller and the menu selection were limited to two entrees, Swedish meatballs and salads versus four at Emeryville. Also, there is no free parking here since there isn't a dedicated parking lot. Glad IKEA has a city concept store in SF. But to get a full flavor of an IKEA store, you need to shop the full-scale store in Emeryville. read more

I only went to the foodcourt area. It was so lively! So many options of food choices too. There was Bingo being played. Anyone could play. If I wasn't in a hurry to go watch a Broadway show, I definitely would have stayed. It looked fun! Even though there were so many food options, I really just wanted the traditional Sweedish meatballs. The service was quick for our Sweedish meatballs. Tasted great! Came with peas and mashed potatoe. Cost seemed reasonable. I think it was worth. Apparently, they have events here often in their food court area. They have a wide selection of home decor and furniture. Nothing compares to the Palo Alto location which scales much larger in comparison, but it's fine if you are looking for cookware and bedroom essentials. It's fairly empty so I'm unsure of future business prospects, but they still have their restaurant with their well-known Swedish meatballs and frozen yogurt. If you plan to shop, parking will be tricky as it is downtown, so it is better if you use public transportation. Either way, it isn't anything grand, but it is there if you need it. read more

IKEA - do better with your pickup. I followed the instructions to a T and it was a horrible experience. First off - you need to include instructions to pull into the parking garage. They're also very crummy cell service there so when you tell people to check in when they're in the spot with no service is a challenge. We checked in and waited for 20 min before I had to send my husband upstairs to go pick it up himself. What was even the point of the curbside pickup? I understand we're all busy, but we his system needs to be better. IKEA in general is good, but wow this experience left a horrible taste in my mouth that I'll be sharing with everyone I know. read more

I went to IKEA today and bought a new plant and some new organization stuff for my drawers and my utensils. The total price was about 40 bucks which is a really reasonable price and it comes in clutch as well because it makes my drawers look so organized and I'm loving my new plant. The value is very good as well. The plants are A+ quality all the decor and decorations that are now in my place feels like it's more organized and I don't have to waste time looking around and searching for my utensils. read more

This is the worst ever store I've ever been in... Not just for IKEA but in general. They were out of everything. Nobody explains anything, and there are no human beings we could find to help. Also, $9 for parking just for an hour, and nowhere in IKEA do they tell you they validate. read more

The staffs here were very unwelcoming and discriminatory toward us. A security guard kept following my husband around the store, which made us extremely uncomfortable. When we finished paying at self-checkout, the employee at the exit greeted and thanked other customers, but completely ignored us even after I said "thank you." It felt very disrespectful and upsetting. We haven't been to IKEA in a long time and were excited to visit, but this experience was very disappointing. This IKEA has some nice items once you get into the store. The parking is an experience I wouldn't want to relive... it's in the heart of San Francisco close to the Tenderloin. The garage itself is well lit & spacious, be careful though. The alley you drive down to get there is overflowing with homeless ppl, make shift shelters of boxes and trash and the ppl do not move quickly. Why should they? Very creepy, drug fueled vibe. Super small selection of furniture...maybe 5 or 6 of each like sofas, tables, dressers...etc. Good selection of kitchen items like dinner ware, cook ware, glasses and such. The check out was self check of course. Prices go up and services go down. However, the young lady assisting customers with their purchases was really sweet & helpful. Parking is partially validated ($6 bucks worth) woopee... even through I spent over $300.00. All in all...we got what we needed but the IKEA of the 90's & early 2000's is long gone. Finally came here to shop. My mom and I enjoyed walking around and bought a few things. (After measuring some things at home, we will be back to buy more here.) Prices are very reasonable. There are good sales! Good food (in the food court but also for sale.) There's a nice plant selection and many options for different price points. Staff is helpful. With "click and collect", you buy online, and IKEA ships to the SF store. Plus the attached food court is top-notch: it's all local SF merchants. I also went to the food court which had a wide selection of food. I got the hogdog for 1 dollar and the pullpork sandwich. I'm obsessed with the new food hall. Although i didn't get to try it, there's so many options and eateries. I tried Ikea meatballs for the first time and I was a fan. The gravy adds the best flavor to the meatballs. It's an affordable meal, I would even be able to eat a kids size and feel satisfied. Its cafeteria style but they have seating inside. Finally we get an IKEA in SF! I don't mind trekking to the Emeryville location; I even found a bus that goes across the Bay bridge (AC Transit "F" to UC Campus) but the location on Market is much more convenient. Living up to the name, the 6x6 mall has multiple levels of awesomeness. Stairs, elevators and escalators make it easy enough to traverse. The IKEA is well-staffed, organized and tidy. Admittedly, I have only bought small things - no furniture yet... Returns process was easy enough for an item that I accidentally bought the wrong version of. And they have a cool As-is section that is filled with discounted items that met a similar fate. Highly recommend checking out Saluhall next door, too. It was nice to be on the other side of the huge windows of the 6x6. There were cute patterned cushions along the ledge of the window and (faux) hanging plants. It was welcoming enough and seemed almost like 'a third space' which the city could certainly use more of. read more

This is a sad IKEA when you compare it to the Palo Alto and Emeryville location. It's split up into 3 levels and each level is pretty small. It feels very disjointed. There's a lot of security o everywhere but they're often either chatting with other staff or looking very apathetic about their job. It was a little confusing to navigate through the floors and I didnt like having to navigate between floors if I wanted to go back to a particular section. The food court even seemed lackluster. We got a gooey chocolate cake which was basically a flattened pie slice shaped underbaked brownie, not even worth the $1.50 price tag. This was a very sad visit. read more

The IKEA in Emeryville is much larger but you can find items here suited for apartment dwelling. Selections are limited. We were looking for a gooseneck lamp and the one we wanted had none in stock. There are 3 floors to browse through. I like that they have security at each entrance and one in front of the bathrooms too. The food court on the 1st floor has a bar, soft serve ice cream and a couple other food kiosks. Upstairs on second floor has a few more places to eat and a kitchen to take cooking lessons. The ikea meatball plate lunch $10 is on this floor and they serve hot dogs and soft serve vanilla and strawberry here. The meatball plate comes with a scoop of mashed potatoes and peas. Hubby tried the PoPo dry noodle and pork bowl from MoMo's. The pork was well seasoned but he wish he had ordered the one with broth instead. I needed a new metal spoon but they were out of that one. We bought a few items including small glass soap dispensers as picked up 2 bags of the frozen chicken 2.2 lbs meatballs $15 each. I wanted the beef ones too but it would've been too much to carry on the muni as we also bought an outdoor mat. On our way out, we stopped to share a watermelon softie, $5. This review is for the food court! Service - I believe they are all self serve kiosks. Pretty easy to order from. Some of the machines are a little laggy though, but functionality works very well. Selection - most items are generally available daily, but the second time I went, garlic bread or toast wasn't available. Value - IKEA is running summer deals every Tuesday and Friday. I would definitely recommend going on Tuesdays or Fridays for the deals. Otherwise, the prices are definitely a little higher than what I had remembered from years ago. For the deals, you have to be an IKEA member and have to sign in to see the discounted prices. Meat balls - still super delicious. Def get on a deal day. Strawberry soft serve - they didn't have the vanilla one that I had remembered from years ago, and that came with a cone. This happened about three years ago, shortly after I moved to the U.S. from Sweden. I was excited to visit IKEA and show my American husband some "very Swedish things" as a fun cultural moment. Upstairs, my husband stepped aside into a quiet corner to take a work call so he wouldn't be in anyone's way. A staff member interrupted him mid-call in a passive-aggressive way and told him he needed to move because it was "her spot," even though he wasn't blocking anything. It felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. Later downstairs, we were stopped and told the yellow IKEA bags weren't for customers. In Sweden, you can use either blue or yellow bags, so I didn't realize the rules were different. When I tried to explain, I was interrupted and spoken to in a dismissive way. It was my second day in America, and instead of feeling welcomed, I felt embarrassed and accused of doing something wrong. That said, this was three years ago, and I'm willing to give this location another chance. I hope the customer service has improved since then. read more

While the pre-designed showrooms in the basement look quite stylish and use the small space efficiently, I actually came here to try the famous Swedish Deli on the 2nd floor. It seemed like almost all of the hot food items were also available for sale nearby in the freezers. While the food was decent and reasonably priced (for San Francisco), I couldn't help but think that it tasted like frozen food I could warm up at home. Swedish Meatballs: The traditional meat balls were chewy and snappy. Reminded me of frozen dinners. I prefer when Swedish meatballs have that more granular homemade texture. The mashed potatoes were smooth and went well with the gravy and meatballs. The peas and lingonberry added nice vegetal bitterness and sweet tart contrast to the richness. Veggie Balls: With visible pieces of vegetables, kinda tasted like those old school veggie burgers that came to market decades ago before the new wave of fake meat. Liked the uniqueness, but not a fan of the weird green gravy. A brown gravy (perhaps mushroom based) would have been better. Plant Balls: Tasted like that new wave of fake meat, very similar to the real meat. The brown gravy was almost identical too. I probably wouldn't notice if you swapped these out for the real Swedish meatballs here and didn't tell me. Salmon Fillet: Probably the only place in San Francisco where you can get a salmon meal for under $10 (excluding tax)! It's not fancy or wow worthy salmon, but it does the trick for a salmon fix. I like the corn veggie medley with and the herbal sauce is very nice. Veggie Medallion: They little hockey pucks feel like a mishmash of veggies with a little bit of carby binder. It's a decent pairing to the salmon. Mac & Cheese: Better than the box stuff, but basically tastes like frozen microwaved mac & cheese. Sparkling Raspberry: Not as sweet as regular soda, but still sugary enough to make you realize this is a soda and not a sparkling juice. No lids and straws anywhere, so you can't take this to go whilst shopping. read more

Came by the other day to check out the newest IKEA in town and it was a decent experience. IKEA is located on Market street and in front of the Powell BART/MUNI station. Security seems to be a big idea at IKEA. There was a uniformed security officer manning the entrance of the store and exits were one way only. IKEA staff were dressed in yellow and blue Hej! clothing with name tags. There were both plain clothed and uniformed security officers roaming the store that was spanned over 3 levels, the street level, the basement, along with the upper level. The city version of IKEA features mainly showroom space along with a small selection of knick-knacks. There was a Swedish bistro that served smoked salmon salads. The restrooms were manned by security guards in uniform and disposable nitrile gloves. read more

Visited the second time on a Wednesday after work. This time went straight upstairs to the Swedish Deli restaurant. What a huge difference from opening day. No more long lines to order. There are 3 large touch screens to self order and pay from. It's a bit laggy. Some items were not available. The prices is very affordable. We got the kids plant ball meal which comes with 4 pcs of plant balls with gravy, mash potatoes, peas and a big dollop of lingonberry jam - $4.49, a side of regular meatballs 4pc for $1.50, vegetable medallion - $3.49, a slice of Daim cake - $1.99 and a frozen yogurt for $1.50. The adult size meatball plate was $9.99 and the plant ball plate was $8.99 which the difference is 4 pcs more of the meat/plant balls. Maybe the mash and peas was bigger but getting the kids plate with extra balls was more economical for me. After ordering you get a receipt with a number and wait to be called. One of the kiosk didn't give me a receipt but it wasn't a problem. Service was quick. The meatballs is tender. The plant balls was ok. The taste is different and I could get use to the plant base version but still much prefer the meat version. Not sure there's yogurt in the frozen yogurt as it didn't taste tart at all. It tastes like a vanilla soft serve which paired really well when eating with the chocolate-almond cake. You can have the soft serve in a cup as well for the same price as the cone. The vegetable medallion, I would totally skip next time. It was potatoes and maybe onions shaped into a medallion. I liked the crispy exterior but I already had mashed potatoes so I wasn't expecting more potatoes. The dining area is quite big. With a mix of standard and bar height tables and chairs. There's a soda fountain with a ketchup/mustard station next to it for the hot dogs they also sell. There's also restrooms here with key pads and a security person to let you in. *******This review is focused on the food court.***** I was curious and wanted to know if the food was just as good as I remembered it to be when Ikea opened its first store in Emeryville (2000). The food court is simply decorated; tables/chairs clean and no debris on the floor. The restroom is located on the same level and is located in the food court area. There are three restrooms which are monitored by a security person. Security is cordial and when I told them that the restroom needed cleaning, they had someone clean it in a reasonable amount of time. In most food courts, you can smell aromas. This food court didn't have any. You order on a kiosk and pay. You wait for your number to be called on your a receipt; pick up your food and look for a table. It reminds me of any fast food places except that this place is clean and not greasy. The wait was about 10 minutes for my food to arrive. The containers/utensils/napkins are recyclable. The bins are clearly labeled: compost/recycle/trash. The only complaint I have is that the recycle bin was overflowing. It seems weird that the workers didn't notice this when Ikea is all into recycling. I just disposed my trash in a bin that wasn't filled. Yes, that's bad but didn't want my trash to overflow onto the floor. Meatballs are 4 for $1,50. It comes with a tiny flag - well presented. The bite size meatballs are smaller than what I remembered. The gravy tastes better than the meatball. I suggest you get two orders of the meatball. Cinnamon bun ($1.50) wasn't warm nor hot. It looks like it was there for a long time and stale looking. I would not recommend this. Mac and Cheese ($3.99) looks awful but surprisingly it did not taste bad. I ate it with the meatball gravy and it was yummy delicious. I would order this again with an order of the meatballs. When mixed, it was great. The Cappuccino ($3) was luke warm and served in a stained cup (the lip of the cup looked like lipstick stains). I told the cashier and he said it was probably some strawberry syrup that got on the cup. I asked for a Cappuccino replacement. The cashier had to ask his supervisor if I could get another Cappuccino. I then had to reexplained and showed the supervisor the stained cup. After some hee hawing between the supervisor and workers, they agreed to make me a new Cappuccino. This experience should never happen. How can they expect a customer to drink from a stained cup and make them pay for a replacement? My total bill for lunch was $10.85. I won't go out of way to eat here but if you happen to be in the area, give it a try. It's fast, clean environment and efficient. Food is decent for the price. After eating, I roamed the store. You can find sale items throughout the store. I had to remind myself that "I don't need anything." It was difficult but I did end up purchasing a panda stuffed animal that I couldn't resist. Their self check out is great and there are many staff standing by to offer assistance. The staff is personable, approachable, friendly, and pleasant to deal with. This is a great place if you need anything - from furniture, linens, food items to measuring spoons. I will return to buy the frozen meatballs and other entrees. They are all reasonably priced. When I return, I might try the the hot dogs in the food court. I never had Sweden hot dogs before. read more
