*******This review is focused on the food court.***** I was curious and wanted to know if the food was just as good as I remembered it to be when Ikea opened its first store in Emeryville (2000). The food court is simply decorated; tables/chairs clean and no debris on the floor. The restroom is located on the same level and is located in the food court area. There are three restrooms which are monitored by a security person. Security is cordial and when I told them that the restroom needed cleaning, they had someone clean it in a reasonable amount of time. In most food courts, you can smell aromas. This food court didn't have any. You order on a kiosk and pay. You wait for your number to be called on your a receipt; pick up your food and look for a table. It reminds me of any fast food places except that this place is clean and not greasy. The wait was about 10 minutes for my food to arrive. The containers/utensils/napkins are recyclable. The bins are clearly labeled: compost/recycle/trash. The only complaint I have is that the recycle bin was overflowing. It seems weird that the workers didn't notice this when Ikea is all into recycling. I just disposed my trash in a bin that wasn't filled. Yes, that's bad but didn't want my trash to overflow onto the floor. Meatballs are 4 for $1,50. It comes with a tiny flag - well presented. The bite size meatballs are smaller than what I remembered. The gravy tastes better than the meatball. I suggest you get two orders of the meatball. Cinnamon bun ($1.50) wasn't warm nor hot. It looks like it was there for a long time and stale looking. I would not recommend this. Mac and Cheese ($3.99) looks awful but surprisingly it did not taste bad. I ate it with the meatball gravy and it was yummy delicious. I would order this again with an order of the meatballs. When mixed, it was great. The Cappuccino ($3) was luke warm and served in a stained cup (the lip of the cup looked like lipstick stains). I told the cashier and he said it was probably some strawberry syrup that got on the cup. I asked for a Cappuccino replacement. The cashier had to ask his supervisor if I could get another Cappuccino. I then had to reexplained and showed the supervisor the stained cup. After some hee hawing between the supervisor and workers, they agreed to make me a new Cappuccino. This experience should never happen. How can they expect a customer to drink from a stained cup and make them pay for a replacement? My total bill for lunch was $10.85. I won't go out of way to eat here but if you happen to be in the area, give it a try. It's fast, clean environment and efficient. Food is decent for the price. After eating, I roamed the store. You can find sale items throughout the store. I had to remind myself that "I don't need anything." It was difficult but I did end up purchasing a panda stuffed animal that I couldn't resist. Their self check out is great and there are many staff standing by to offer assistance. The staff is personable, approachable, friendly, and pleasant to deal with. This is a great place if you need anything - from furniture, linens, food items to measuring spoons. I will return to buy the frozen meatballs and other entrees. They are all reasonably priced. When I return, I might try the the hot dogs in the food court. I never had Sweden hot dogs before. read more

Some of my favorite things I bought from IKEA: A sofa so comfortable I paid as much to recover it as I bought it new; a kitchen table & chairs with seating I later reupholstered with French Country fabric from Britex. So I was looking for seating and storage ideas and was underwhelmed by the selection. I knew it would be scaled down but it was small. I did find some new sheets for my son's (IKEA Brimnes) bed. The restaurant was small and the lines were long. The registers are self check-out only and were challenging if you, like me, had a bagful of stuff from their Marketplace (it's a miracle I didn't decorate the floor with a jar of Sylt Lingon) My Swedish friend explained some of the kooky names. Even in Swedish not all of them made sense. If you saw two giggling adults, one of us busting out in dance moves to Earth, Wind & Fire, that was us. In all, I like IKEA. This location is probably best for small items or room ideas - and certainly for a plate of meatballs, mashers/gravy & Sylt Lingon - if you can stand the line. The location in the struggling but rising mid-Market area is brilliant. The foot traffic was terrific, it added a new, vibrant spot that can sure use the boost. It's already adding a lot of positive momentum to the area- thank you, IKEA and Mayor London Breed! read more

A lot of enthusiasm from the staff. Opening day band but not ABBA, dammit. Hope it lasts but the persistence of homelessness in the area will make economic survival challenging. Who would have ever predicted an IKEA to open up shop in San Francisco? Although a surprise that this has opened on Market Street, in hopes of driving more foot traffic and turning the city around from what people deem "a doom loop." This is the spot to be to shop for bathroom furniture, home decor, tableware and when you've had a successful shopping trip make a stop at the Swedish Deli. For the first 500 people in line on grand opening day, they handed out blue Frakta bags which can be handy in any situation. Although the store is busy now since it just opened, I am excited to get the chance to take a leisurely stroll and discover new products on each floor! read more

There's finally an IKEA in the city! I visited around a week after the grand opening, and it was a fun experience! The layout at this location was clearly thoroughly thought out, everything was clean and well organized, and there were so many more staff members around to help than at any other IKEA I've been to before. I wanted to try the food court, but it closed early at 4pm. The one issue I have with this location is that there's no designated parking lot or garage for IKEA shoppers. Unless I'm buying something tiny and light that I can fit into a shopping bag, I'd rather drive all the way across the bridge to the Emeryville IKEA, which has parking. read more

Boy! I finally get to see the once empty spaces of its all glass façade to be filled with...IKEA! Before this Swedish furniture store was up and running with a breath of fresh air, some of the retail stores like Nordstrom in Westfield were closed in order to make way for ones more diverse. IKEA had been popping up throughout the Bay Area and around the world while SF never had one, until now. My family and I had been to IKEA in east Palo Alto for the best needed items like steel utensil sets, if we didn't have enough. We even had lunch like Swedish Meatballs as its signature dish. Nothing like this ceases to amaze me more than what's given to us from the Land of the Fjords! Before my family might know what home furniture items to buy from IKEA, I came last night to purchase what broadens my horizons for starters. Take organic bilberry preserves for instance. While blueberries help reduce aging, bilberries help support eye health. A must-have if I were to browse further before purchase. I never had bilberry flavor ever since my family and I had been back home from Hong Kong several years ago. This year, I have one, just like lingonberries and sea buckthorns. It's good for IKEA in the Mid Market to have security and plenty of staff while hundreds of shoppers went in and out. I ordered 20 glass vases for pick up. The SF store had them in stock. I tried to go the first time at 7:15pm but apparently they close at 7:00, even though their web site says 8pm. What back the next day and they have a huge parking garage with validation in the alley on Stevenson. That was great. I went inside was directed to customer service and was helping immediately by Cora. She was very friendly and helpful and validated the parking first thing. She went to pull the order and rolled out a little plastic cart with all the vases inside just partially wrapped in tissue. She apologized that they weren't boxed up but she said I could take the cart out to my car and pointed me towards additional tissue to pack myself. It took me about 15min to carefully pack everything in my trunk and I was told I could leave the cart in the garage area. All good. Overall very happy with service, except for the packing up part. Customer service is so so so terrible. Their garage pickup does not work, but they do not tell you that so you will just be sitting in your car forever with no cell service and no updates. You will eventually go upstairs to get your order after waiting in your car for half an hour to only have customer service tell you they are very busy. It is a very confusing store with no instructions for anything. Worst part is you have to pay for parking. What is the point of having the convenience of garage pickup when it does not work or when you have to wait over half an hour or more. I will never visit this IKEA AGAIN read more

Maybe IKEA can save downtown SF? Lol come through! I'm definitely coming back for meatballs lol. Three stories - it's much smaller than a normal IKEA but also a lot more manageable and less overwhelming. I find the full on IKEA to be so daunting and fatigue-inducing lol. Relatively, you can move through this one pretty fast. I came through at 3pm on opening day - August 23, 2023. I was looking for giveaways but didn't really see any.. I got like one cinnamon roll sample and a sparkling drink sample. Someone please tell me they got here earlier and got better giveaways! So minus one star because I was disappointed they weren't passing out free IKEA blue bags at the door. For your everyday items, maybe less for furniture needs, this is a convenient location and here for you! Finally a new activity to do in SF. The place did its best to accommodate to a downtown location. When I came in, the coffee machine didn't work, and the cafeteria was closed. I was sad. Also, the elevators are kinda hidden, we had to ask how to carry our cart to upstairs. I think when we walk in, we saw the stairs, not elevators. We maybe tricked our mind. Anyways, that's inside is the same: show romes, plants, and small factory. The check out place is kinda small as well. Their stock is definitely smaller, so many things I wanted to get, but not sold there. I ended up getting a panda, which was very cute. read more

This review is only for the Swedish Deli on the 2nd floor of the new Ikea on Market St. I ordered meatballs with extra meatballs at the self-service kiosk, and they were ready a few minutes later. The food was served in a compostable box with a wooden spork. The meatballs were tender and delicious - just a bit fatty with a nice meaty flavor, and were complemented perfectly with the creamy brown gravy and lingonberry jam. Unfortunately, the mashed potatoes tasted like powered mashed potatoes, like what you'd get from a bad school cafeteria, and the peas were a very unpleasant yellowish green, as if they had been sitting in a steamer for a couple of hours. Although the sides weren't that good, the meatballs themselves were fantastic and I would certainly want to come back again. The price was super reasonable, and is a very good deal. Regarding the rest of the Ikea store - the entrance facing Market street is heavily guarded and access restricted, so the interior of the store seemed clean and safe, like what you'd find at any other Ikea. The store itself seemed pretty small - perhaps only 1/6 the size of a regular Ikea, with a strong emphasis on small items that can be carried home on foot. Honestly so solid for a quick and healthy meal. Entrees are 50% off in the summer and something about the food court food just hits every time. I also got a (strawberry?) softserve which I thought was a bit too sweet and melted very fast. Also the fountain drinks were unique and very healthy tasting including sparkling pear and even the cola tasted not very sweet. Parking is tough and market street is hectic especially if you have heavier items to haul out of there. read more

If you have the time and a car, I recommend the extra time to go to the Emeryville location. It's much larger and easier to navigate. First & last visit was early this year. I entered on Market St, wearing a dust mask. Ignorant black security guards greeted me with suspicion (as a thief) and not a senior with respiratory issues and almost followed me in elevator. As I read in other review, it seems they took up the 'employee only' elevator. Is there another word to describe black security guards treating me like this because I'm not Caucasian...or black? What do you expect, if you have human & animal waste blowing on the streets. Not to mention, drug addicts, smokers, & vapers, who expose neighbors to toxic chemicals. Most of these guards are servants, used as first line of defense for the cowards in law enforcement. It is common for these guys to be smoking something thus, they're happy with their self image or never thought about it. Cudtomer service at Ikea is no different: it went up in smoke, long ago...if you read prior reviews! I saw there mostly lighter skin people, who aren't there to treat everyone the same, either. What you look like, how you dress, and how much you spend, seems is more important to them. If anything, AI will likely CANCEL most of their positions... I paid upfront and at pick-up day, they expected me to take the doors only, as cubes were out of stock. This ikea is not ran like a normal ikea. Location is probably the worst, located in SOMA where there is absolutely no available street parking, if you find a space, it will most likely be yellow zone aka ticket or tow away. It's a smaller ikea with 3 floors, you can get your essentials and small items. All bigger pieces and furniture are delivery only. For a smaller store they manage to have put together some great showrooms. I came in a few times to pick up small things to avoid driving to emeryville or Palo Alto. To say service is slow, it's an understatement. It's extremely difficult to get any help and the workers are very slow and inefficient. Would not recommend this location unless you absolutely need something. read more

I never thought I'd be gushing over a retail behemoth appearing in San Francisco. But these are different times, and I bow to their corporate wisdom. The sheer guts to secure & build out in the depths of COVID, one block from the shopping center where retailers are walking away from their leases. Ok, here's what I'm thinking. Yes, it's a dismal stretch of Market St, but surrounding it are high price condos & tech headquarters. Everyone needs furnishings & gadgets, & those on a budget or lack transportation can have their design & price points matched. So let's check out the store. Today's grand opening was a major party. The entrance was lined with flag waving employees brought in from all over to cheer on the new shoppers. First thing- an IKEA goodie bag, contents being a watering can, red heart plushie, & an IKEA rain hat, made from their iconic blue bags. Round the corner to face painting, selfie station, Task Rabbit free measure tapes & Ts, DJ, live band, but the highlight was Laundra Tyme adding flair to a stylish room. The store also has shelves full of rainbow flag bags. Clearly, IKEA did their homework & gets an Inclusivity Badge. I was surprised how much inventory they have on 3 floors. On this day the large crowds completely ignored those helpful floor arrows. No giant metal carts here. You get a blue tote or a wheeled plastic cart. I'm not sure what the process is to get furniture from the warehouse, but they do have a parking garage. I only saw self-checkout stations, I hope they don't lose too much money, the IKEA store in East Palo Alto took out all the self-check due to "shrinkage ". You can expect to see the same items as the larger stores, but scaled down and well curated. The cafe is much smaller, but equally efficient if you know how to order at a kiosk. If not, there's plenty of logo shirt wearing folks to help. I predict this IKEA will be a hit. read more

This is my second time shopping at the SF IKEA. Finally got to try their meatballs. I ordered the meatballs plate that comes with 8 meatballs, mashed potatoes, peas, and cranberry sauce for $10. I'm glad I added 4 meatballs for $1.50 more since this is my dinner. Around $12 something and got a free coffee by entering my loyalty card. I also bought a baking pan here for only $2. Only the display one was left so I took one and ripped off the sticker that covered the bar code. The self check out let me pay for it so it worked. I came on the day after Christmas after work, so it was really quiet. I'm surprised they didn't restock the baking pans. I'm glad IKEA opened in SF - a lot of good deals! Come before February to enjoy the 5% off loyalty card discount before they discontinue it. I won't go out of the way for the meatballs meal cause it's a bit small on the portion size. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! IKEA has finally made it to San Francisco, albeit in a peculiar location. Despite that, I'm still very happy residents no longer have to drive over the bridge or to Palo Alto to get some smaller home decor items or for bigger decoration or remodeling ideas. The building is brand new and spectacular. I think it's about 50,000 sq ft? So much smaller than the normal IKEA warehouse store. There are 3 floors, that of course, are really well laid out and designed. It may be the first IKEA store I've seen to have a hybrid showcase and sales floor combined into a great shopping experience. I made it to the special preview over the weekend before it opened on August 23, and there were so many friendly staff ready to help. There was also a lot of visible security present, if you're wondering (and I know you all are!). Everything was so new, it even had that new smell all over the store! The store is separated into these categories on the 3 floors: 1st/Main Floor - small home decor, LIVE PLANTS!, mirrors, check out, the as is section, and a small grab and go food area. Basement - mostly all of the furniture. Bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, living and dining room. Many show rooms and assembled furniture for you to look at and test. But they all have to be ordered. 2nd Floor - the restaurant! Go get your meatballs! The dining area is rather small, so I would take it to go or wait until the rest of the complex opens up. They don't seem to use their plastic plates and metal utensils here, which is probably a good idea. All the goodies can be ordered using digital kiosks that take almost every payment method. Also, most of the shopping you'll do will most likely be on this floor. It has all the accessories, kitchenwares, lamps, electronics, textiles, and other smaller items. I can't reiterate this enough, but I'm thrilled with this location so far. There are self-checkout machines on each floor, tablets that you can shop with, and live staff to assist too. You can even use their app to pre-scan all the items you're buying and then just enter in your payment at checkout! Awesome! The bathrooms are locked and need a code, but there are attendants to let you in and they're really nice. Only thing I'm sad is how dirty this store will get over time because of all the foot traffic. I'll still visit frequently though as a die hard IKEA fan! read more

A very different layout/floor plan from your typical IKEA! Being in downtown S.F., this "city" IKEA is for smaller items and purchases. This is a great place for college students in SF or those living in apartments to shop at. The place is super clean and has a few security guards out front. The employees inside are super helpful and friendly. The food court is solid and does the job and I'd say the best thing about this location is that it connects to Saluhall, the food hall next door. I think they should advertise their parking garage a bit better though. Some people want to drive for bulkier purchases and I feel like if people don't realize there's a parking garage connected to Ikea, it'll discourage them from visiting. read more

The food selection is limited for now, when I went plenty of menu options including veggie balls were greyed out. The meatball plate is very heavy on the peas. We didn't realize that the adult Mac and cheese also came with peas, it's half peas. Everything is served in disposable containers. Looking forward to going back once the dust settles to try an expanded selection. read more

This review is just for the food*Beware that the cafe has really odd hours! The first week it was open it was already closed by 530 even though the website had said 6. There was no frozen meatballs left and only a stray package of the veggie ones in the freezer section. Just this week we looked at the site and it said 12-5 so we went at 430, which is quite early given that most working hours are 9-5. Got takeout and it was not bad, $9 for the meatball and $8 for the smoked salmon salad. I wish they had separated the sauce/berry and the potato salad/veggies but overall great value & the taste was just as good as the Emeryville ikea. Nice Ikea, frustrating parking lot. It's a nice small format Ikea, with a great and promising food hall. But what has irked me repeatedly is the parking lot. Hard to access, expensive to park (surge pricing on weekends!), and crappy bike parking. I'd like it if Ikea could get their parking vendor to make it easier to get a bike in and out of there. the route through the gates for bikes should be better marked, and the bike cage should not be locked (or un-caged bike parking should be available). Generally hostile bike parking situation, which is weird for an urban format Ikea. read more
