One of the quirky things about Laurel Village is how unconventional it is. The biggest perk is there is a parking lot. Did I mention free parking? In San Francisco? Being here for an appointment, my friend noticed the "Ace" sign from the lot so we walked in from the store's backdoor, another rarity for SF businesses. Not wanting to spend too much time shopping, we saw a young gentleman making keys by the back entrance and showed him what we sought. He gave us instructions and offered to help us if we couldn't find it before he was done. Walking the aisle he mentioned, we couldn't find it and asked another young guy for help. After walking a couple of aisles, the key staff member saw us still searching and took us to the exact location where they were shelved and stored. After getting what we needed, I headed to the cashier near the main California St. entrance. The kind lady asked me whether I was an Ace buyer member (no) and quickly registered me to be one. After paying for my items and leaving, I noticed the dollar amount on my receipt was unusually high and, in studying it, learned that she mistakenly double rang my items. I quickly walked back and explained the situation to her. She took my receipt back and quickly issued a credit to adjust this error. very disappointed. xmas items are 25% off but Hanukah items will not see that. Hanukah starts tomorrow-the 24th. xmas starts the 25th. i spoke with the owner. He decided this is what to do. NOT RIGHT! There is no equality. Owner said he runs out of Hanukah decorations-full price!! That's fair and equal. I know it's about the money. They buy too much xmas-where Hanukkah gets an end cap! wow! Hanukah sells out. xmas doesn't. Wonder what would be said if it was in the reverse! got a message from one of the CEO's Haha. "not all xmas things on sale" haha! maybe? but not ONE Chanukah thing on sale until after the holiday starts and the company sells out on most items. About a month ago, I called Stan's Kitchen, part of this Standard 5 & 10 store to see if they carried food coloring and sugar pearls as I needed that for the cookie decorating class. And they do. Perfect. Came over, got what I needed. Previously, I also found a great looking (it's pink!) and useful silicon spatula as somebody was using the regular spatula on the nonstick pan and that's a huge no-no. Today, I pop in to see if they have any stackable yogurt jars because I wanted to make chia puddings, but they don't have any stackable jars. I did end up ordering them from the company named after Brazil's rain forest. However, I found a silicon fork that I didn't know I needed, but I do because I'm cooking more at home now and these kitchen tools are essential. Plus, it's a pretty aqua color. read more

truly a gem that I just found the other day. a friend told me they actually have yarn. and it was totally true, nice small selection of acrylic yarn and embroidery thread. Lots of fun items for each seasonal holiday. wow what valentines display they had. but the BEST part was finding a knowledgeable and kind staff person named Heather. Heather helped me find the best 3M double stick tape for the project I needed. THEN She helped me buy a bird feeder and helped me get the spicy suet blocks that go inside (we are hoping the spiciness will deter the mouse that lives in our neighbor's yard). Wow it feels a little silly to rave about a hardware store but this place is seriously the best! Everyone is so friendly from the people who answer the phone to all the staff in store. I needed to get some keys copied and it was done instantly and at a very fair price. Store is also jam packed with everything one could ask for from a hardware store and more. This is purely for the unfortunate (and seemingly unnecessary) recent remodel. It's no longer the welcoming and well stocked Ace it used to be. I loved visiting this place often- it had great customer service (as opposed to the one on Clement) and they were often proactive and helpful. Fantastic stock of home/diy projects/repair items, paints, pro construction items, and everything you'd need. Now, the floor plan is unwelcoming (rotated the aisles and the ceilings appeared to have lowered 5+ ft) and the stock is now more towards crafts, cards, party, and home decor items so if you're in construction/remodel mode, your options are severely limited to 3-4 short aisles. During my visit, the spray paint/etc. aisle was cordoned off with no signage or staff working in the aisle to explain why it's inaccessible. Odd how they were able to turn the same large space they had before to what it is now. For what it's worth, I was neither greeted nor asked if I needed help, despite my passing by several employees, including those having personal conversations very loudly in the back stock space. It's just plain sad when something like this happens to a local neighborhood location. I'm sure it meets some people's needs, just not mine anymore. read more

He googled to explore answers to ways to make my phone adaptable to the US electrical system. So often, an employee just says they don't know an answer, and then move onto the next customer. I mean they have a little bit of everything and sometimes it's really overwhelming. It's like walking into a mini Target. Some of their stuff is so chaotic and random I don't even get how or why they chose to sell it, but you have to remember their target audience is elderly yuppies. The area they are in and their clientele are mainly 60 plus it seems as I've never been into a store so many times and seen decrepit people looking like that if you just touch them they'll turn to dust. I do know that they either were or still are unionized, which is very very rare for a independent store, so you know they at least in the past, did not treat their employees well or they would have never needed to unionize. It's a store I'll go to because it's convenient where I'm located, but they are not as cheap as you expect a Five and Dime Store to be, even though there's really no such thing anymore. The nice thing about living in an apartment is you can always call your landlord when something breaks. The bad thing about living in an apartment, especially one that is old (rent control tho!), is occasionally, things get backed up. My parents squeezed into our 1 bedroom apartment for the weekend and come Monday morning, our toilet needed some extra push. I searched for hardware stores and didn't want to go to Laurel Heights for ACE Hardware. This was conveniently located along the #1 Bus route and across B patisserie! (another bonus!) This place is OLD. All the aisles are overstuffed with items where upon first look, you don't know what the hell they're selling. I just needed a plunger! I took a walk around the whole store since it's not that big. When I got back to the front empty handed, the lady asked if I needed help, which I gladly accepted. The item I was looking for was all the way in the back, in an unmarked box where you have to actually look down inside the box to find what you were looking for. It's like searching for buried treasure. $4.99 + tax is a bargain for when you need help flushing that shiet down the drain. All other shiett problems, please consult your therapist. read more

I am attaching a photo that clearly shows his claim to be untrue. Just look! OK so now you claim " ...Scroll lower on the website you are on and you will see that it is NOT available at our store, nor are you able to ship to our store. You are able to order this online at AceHardware.com and have it shipped directly to you if you wish..." I did scroll and if you did you would have seen the "unavailable online" statement contained there. The fact that your business model doesn't include customer satisfaction by making a reasonable counter offer (again, I do not consider upselling what's in stock as reasonable) doesn't help. At the suggestion of the woman in the makeshift chocolate shop a few doors down, I came into this variety store in search of a pastry bag and tips (accoutrements for my cupcake experimentation). I asked the first employee I laid eyes upon if they had such implements in the store. He led me to the cake decoration aisle and I was in heaven. I not only came away with a pastry bag, several tips and two mini muffin tins but also found the small size paper souffle cups that I'd been searching for. The Standard 5 & 10 has almost anything you can think of from greeting cards and underwear to office supplies, ramekins and bobby pins - it truly is a variety store! This Standard 5&10 Ace Hardware has been here forever. I always pop in when doing my errands on Laurel Village. A remnant of what was called " dime store", this store carries almost everything... it recently acquired the shoes store next door, and the expanded it into the kitchen housewares department. Pots and pans, tablecloths, cloth and paper napkins, fancy measuring spoons, cheeseboards, ... come in and browse to find out what's new.. You can find almost anything here. Light bulbs? They have updated to have LED lights too. Keys made? Yes, they can do it too. Want to repainted your house? Paint section. Fancy paper plates for a party? They have it. Soil for your garden? Birds seeds? Yes, they have everything! I love this store because they always evolve and keep their merchandise up to date with the times and trends. The staff here is very friendly and helpful. Friendly and helpful employees. I ordered paint and a few other items online for instore pickup. When I arrived at the store, they brought up my order and checked in because the tint I ordered did not show up on their print out. The gentleman asked if I meant to have no tint because he wanted to make sure I knew I could not paint, well no color would show up. That being said this particular Ace hardware is above middling on the hardware store scale. Which is true for most Ace's. Folks who work here are really nice and they have a lot of fun non-hardware things in stock like toys, stationery and party decorations. They're good at explaining products to you too. So the only drawback is that the prices aren't at all cheap. 5 & 10 my azz! But it almost gets a fifth star anyway, because it's the only part of Laurel Village that doesn't scream upscale privilege. read more

I had made keys here before. I went in about 3 weeks ago to make 5 keys at first I was thinking a design key then I saw $4.99. I thought no I just get the regular key. When I got to the register they run up as $4.99. I ask why are they so high as the design keys are 4.99 the guy told me metal went up. I did ask for the manger and he was out to lunch. I was in a hurry but wrote a email to Ace Hardware headquartered with a response we can't tell them how much to charge. They have just about everything! It's a true variety emporium. Plus they offer online shopping, take your old batteries and cut Winnie the Pooh keys. I haven't spent enough time in the store to see everything that they have and I ignore the hardware store aisles but I do come here just about every Halloween. They usually have a good selection of Halloween items and the same is true for all holidays, including Chinese New Year. Also, the note card selection is surprisingly good; they carry Crane & Co. and Paper Source, along with Hallmark and other brands. The greeting cards are okay (mainstream), mostly Hallmark I think. You'll also find office, packaging, and school supplies. They've got your standard craft supplies, including knitting needles, crochet hooks, posters, yarn (just acrylic Red Heart), and felt. Need a place to store your crafts? Choose from a wide array of baskets and storage containers. The toy department has Hello Kitty items, UglyDolls, Lego, board games and Webkinz; the types of toys that kids actually want. The candy aisle is worth a visit too for the usual suspects but also Scharffen Berger chocolate bars. I love this place. They have everything. It's always fun to go in and see what they're offering gadget wise and also for must haves. On Thanksgiving eve I realized I had been a little aggressive in my inviting....and didn't have enough table space for the group soon to be supping. Did I want to pay $44.99 for a folding table, when for $54.99 you can get a folding table AND 4 chairs @ Target? No. But the point is, they had a table, there's plenty of parking in the Laurel Village lot behind the store, and it's bloody convenient, and you can get personalized friendly service, and I hate going to Target. read more

Toys, bathroom hooks, paints, tools, helium balloons, board games, strangely realistic German animal figurines....it's like they wrote my shopping list for me! Taken straight from my subconscious and imagination! Going to the 5 and Dime was THE thing to do when I was a kid. We would save our allowances to make the long trek into town (maybe 5-6 blocks), and buy whatever our latest obsession was - tiny glass animals, soap that grew fur, Chia pets...that place held treasures beyond belief. Going to Ace Standard 5 & 10 brought back those memories in a rush of nostalgia. Love, love, love this place. I am going to do ALL of my chores so that I can get back there as soon as possible, money in hand, to get all of those things that my little heart desires. 5 points for the vast array of hannukah decorations and doo-dads that we were able to successfully craft into hanging ornaments for our Hannikristmas tree that wowed our friends and loved ones and made us the envy of all who attended our Hannukristmas brunch this past weekend (yes, we had manishewitz; no, nobody had any...though Tal K brought delicious Israeli wine that we enjoyed long after the last bottle of bubbly was deep in our bellies). This store is really exceptional. They have a wide variety of stuff, a super helpful staff, and prices that are competitive with whatever you'd find at a big box or online. This weekend we purchased a grill that we had researched online. We wanted to buy it locally and were willing to pay a little more to feel good about supporting a local business but lo and behold, Standard 5&10 had it at the same price as Amazon and delivered it to our door for free within an hour! From cupcake decorating supplies, to biodegradable compost bin liners, to Scharffenberger chocolate bars at $3.99 a piece (great price!), to Passover finger puppets, the Five and Dime has got you covered. This place is pretty much the yuppy foil to the Asian variety stores on Clement (which I also love, for different reasons). I really love this place - it is super fun to browse, they have an impressive collection of Le Creuset (one of my obsessions), and you can always find something extremely unique. A cozy little Five and Ten like variety store that exists in a small street shopping center. I'm amazed how small this place is yet still has everything you need and want. Although today I went to get some logs for the fireplace and they were out. So the catch is, they might have everything you need but they won't have tons of it. The prices are a little more expensive but what can you expect compared to Costco? It's a convenient place to go especially if you're too busy to drive all the way down to Costco or another large store. The people are very friendly and helpful and I've never been here longer than 10 minutes without finding what I need. There's a Starbucks nearby too so it's convenient to pick up some evil corporate coffee on your way out. read more

I love 5&10s. They are the Swiss Army Knives of convenience stores. What's that? You need a mother's day card, motor oil and an ice cream scoop? No problem, they've totally got you covered. I went in to get some refrigerator magnets and left with a dish strainer, an index card note book and a dry erase board. And guess what, no magnets. I got distracted by the pipe cleaners and the sequins in the arts and crafts section (small shiny objects you know. I didn't have a chance.) Anyway, great stuff there and friendly staff. Super friendly. I was almost suspicious about their friendliness. "What are you guys on drugs? Have a super day? No man, YOU have a super day!" I think I just needed to finish my coffee.
