Third update: It has been almost two and half years since my last review, a pandemic has come and gone, SF Hardware closed up shop completely for most of it, and then, after putting on a pretty good show of reopening, they went right back to never having predictable hours and being all locked up when you get dressed and leave the the house for the first time in a week because you need a screw during totally reasonable daytime business hours. Two out of the last three times I showed up there, during afternoon hours that they'd previously been open, they were locked up tight. At least today they put the sign up saying that they now close every day at 4:30 (because obviously I'm going to take off from work early if I need a screw, right?), last time there wasn't even a sign. I said in my original review that one of their primary appeals was "They're there." But if they're not open when you need them, then they're not there. And very frequently, they aren't. I think I'll just order replacement screws from the internet from now on. read more

After being a loyal customer, for almost 18 years, I will no longer patronize this business. The posted hours are never correct. The last several times I've gone to this business it has been closed. 45 min prior to the posted closing. Today I went at 4 PM with the post closing at 4:30 PM and the owner was locking the door and would not let me shop. I am done. read more

I am usually all for shopping local, but save yourself the aggravation of trying to return an item you buy from here. I bought an extension cord, ripped the cardboard cover, but otherwise didn't even open it. A day later, he laughs in my face when I show him the receipt. I know how this sounds but seriously, go with Amazon instead, it's 10%-20% cheaper for what you need. read more

this place is great. it's a mom and pop hardware store that is packed to the gils with useful things. their hours are short, but that's because the owners are nearing retirement age. as people have noted, you probably don't want to get keys made here, but otherwise, it's great. this place will save you a trip to home depot or lowes. the haters need to get a grip: surely you have better things to do than write nasty reviews of your local hardware store. read more

Notice: their hours have been unpredictable in Covid-19 era. Please call ahead. It's a neighborhood hardware store. They have things you need for your house or apartment. The owner-operators are friendly and helpful. I want them to stick around, because the next closest hardware store is at least a mile away. For those of us who don't drive, and need a 40 cent screw or a $16 plumbing fixture ASAP, that's a long way. I think a lot of their business comes from contractors M-F, hence their days off are Sunday and Monday. Would be great if they were open 24/7, but what are you going to do? A great little local neighborhood hardware store that has a limited but usually has what you need for small jobs. Say you need a couple screws to hang up a picture on the wall. Or a couple keys made, they can do that. If you need to get some minor pluming needs or a paint brush, some speaker wire or some new hardware to hang a shower curtain. In fact any small job (apartment sized) you need something for you could find here. It's nice to have a local hardware store and I try to support them as often as possible, I would be sad if they weren't there when I need them. read more

Keys. Never have keys made here. I have had keys made by three different people in this store. None of them worked. That being said, I love this store. For such a small store, they have everything you could possibly need. They staff knows where everything is and gladly point you in the right direction. Who needs Home Depot when you have something like SF Hardware chillin' right along Divisadero for all of your home and garden needs? While their hours can be tweaked a little bit as far as I'm concerned (they're open from 10:00am - 6:00pm... completely inconvenient for people that work between those times), they're still doing a pretty great thing in the 'hood. The place is totally cramped, but somehow, the owner knows where everything in the store is within 2.3 seconds of asking. Call it organized chaos I suppose, but when you're having trouble tracking down a wood screw or a sheet of felt furniture fabric, just ask and you'll be there in two shakes of a lamb's tail. read more

A few possibly useful, not really cool, and definitely not funny pieces of advice: 1. Do not go here with a hangover. The sheer quantity and variety of products, crammed from floor to ceiling in this broom-closet sized store will have your head spinning and your greasy brunch churning in your stomach before you can say "Pepto Bismol". 2. Take a list. Absolutely write out a list of the things you need before getting sucked into this vortex. Go ahead and feel free to add a few items you don't think you'll be able to find at a hardware store- they probably have it in there SOMEWHERE if you simply dig deep enough. 3. Wear long sleeves and protective footwear. There are plenty of opportunities for arm scrapes and stubbed toes. It is nearly impossible to turn around in the overstuffed aisles without knocking something over or tripping on something. This store is awesome! Just yesterday I got 100 bobby pins and a sewing kit for about $2.25. We also walked away with a new hamper, light bulbs, and some other boy stuff. Rest assured they have everything you could possibly want in a hardware store, plus a nice enough couple running the place. They won't go out of their way to be helpful but they're available should you have any questions. **They also make keys and have a pretty interesting assortment of cigarette lighters. read more

The have jugs of simple green in 1 and 2 gallon varieties here. The also have light switches that lock, light switches that don't lock, nuts, bolts, screws, flanges, washers and hinges, along with wires and lightbulbs and gardening equipment. I think they have Jimmy Hoffa here too; the guy at the counter was pretending to not know what I was talking about. Never in my life have I seen so much stuff crammed into a few hundred square feet of space. Nice folks, too, if a little evasive. read more

I was just called a "Fing White Boy" and told that my kind is not served here. Three weeks ago I made a purchase a was told by the guy working there that I could bring it back if I didn't use it. I brought it back today and was told by the same guy that it had been to long. I asked to speak with a manger and he asked why. I said because this is bad business to which he replied "Fu$k you white boy. Why are you giving me a hard time). I responded by stating my case and was told that my kind was not served there and I needed to leave. I love supporting local business but this place needs to be out of business. we always end up here when we need to fix a little something in the apartment and driving all the way to Colma for Home Depot is completely out of the question HEY it's just a few blocks away! perfect. we can walk. very tiny store CHOCK-FULL with every little thing you might need for minor repairs and your general sprucer-uppers. sometimes I think it'd be fun to just come in and look around for a while, but I always get that small shop weird vibe cuz the folks running it never smile or say anything--so of course I feel like I'm invading their personal space. I have more than the normal demand for hardware stores, and this is a great neighborhood hardware store. Yes, it's small and crowded. It's well organized, making the stock very accessible, and the staff is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, making it a pleasure to navigate. So what's the trade-off for the small size? They have one of almost everything - but that's about it. If you need a choice between decoratives version of x, they are not going to have it. Even with this limit, I'm able to do the vast majority of hardware shopping here - probably the biggest compliments I can give to a specialized business that's in my neighborhood (a 10 minute walk from my home). read more

Everytime I go into this place I find something I didn't realize I needed, but couldn't live without-- From rubber cement to light switch dimmers to key rings to cork board to u-shaped nails to speaker wire to a spatula. i have never left empty-handed. very reasonable prices (keys copied for $1.55!) and knowledgable staff ("yes, we have off-white interior semi-gloss paint. aisle 1, halfway back, top shelf. i'll get you the right paint brush") makes for a great hardware-store experience within walking distance of my apartment. read more

This place is great. They copied my keys SO FAST. I asked for two copies of two keys, and they used two different colored metals - nice touch! Had a delicious lunch today at Zazie. There was a bit of a wait and I mosied over to Cole Hardware. Found a couple of things I needed but decided to come back after lunch to pick it up. Since it was such a nice day out I threw on the headphones and walked home. D'oh! Forgot my to pick up my goodies. But here is goodly gear. SF hardware was on my home and had exactly what I need to get at cole hardware. And check this out the EXACT same thing that was $2.98 at Cole was (no joke) only .89 cents! I love it when life works out in my way. Now I know to skip over Cole no matter what. Good thing SF hardware is closer to home but sounds like it would be worth the trek anyway. read more

They have everything and the owner knows his supplies and tools. Get a key duplicate, it only takes a minute. Prices are really fair for local neighborhood hardware store. If you have a problem to solve, the owner can help you brainstorm on how to attack the problem as he has a lot of handyman background as well as construction. If you live near this store, no reason to drive out the Home Depot or Lowe's, they should have what you need. read more

This place has never let me down. It's family-owned & operated, & their son Randy used to hang out at The Page a lot. I haven't seen him there lately, but the kid is a pool shark. Steer clear of challenging him, as he'll probably make you look the fool. Just yesterday I went down there needing a piece to connect my NEW used dryer to the gas line, & they ran to the back corner & pulled one out for me within 30 seconds. After trying to sleep-in on saturday morn. and failing, I was like OK I'll get up an be productive. So I popped over to Bean Bag coffee shop for a triple macchiato. Aha, that's better. I've been wanting to make my gurl a copy of my house key and just haven't had time....for 3 months now...dooh! So as I was back home I saw the hardware store and was like, oh I wonder if they make keys. I peeked in to look around....I was in business. Totally stoked! I'm excited to find a well stocked, but small hardware store in the 'hood. I can't believe I didn't find this place sooner -- after all, it's not exactly hidden on Yelp! Instead, I've been going to the ACE hardware in the financial district near my office, which means (1) paying more, and (2) having to lug stuff home on the Muni. BTW, not hating on ACE -- good folks, good selection, but I imagine they pay through the nose for the real estate in the locations they pick, and have no choice but to recoup that cost through their prices. SF Hardware is a quaint mom 'n' pop sort of place that many of us will remember from our youths, the very opposite of, e.g., Home Depot. It has narrow aisles packed floor-to-ceiling and front-to-back with a pretty stunning array of odds and ends, all very neatly organized. As a result of the range of stuff, I had zero luck finding the very specific and somewhat obscure items I was looking for, but the pleasant gent at the register knew exactly where they were, and once I was pointed in the right direction, it was no trouble. I didn't have a good look at the prices on most of the other stuff, and frankly I'm such an unhandyman (handlessman?) that I probably wouldn't know. They look like a cash-only business, but it turns out they take cards. I'll be back the next time something totally random in my life breaks and, as per usual in this neighborhood, I have absolutely no idea where to buy a new one. My guess is that this place will save me yet again. read more

There used to be a dollar store across the street that I'd look in first, but since that closed now I just meander through the miniature aisles here looking for all the things that help me keep the house together. The family that runs the place have always been helpful and sweet.
