This neighborhood hardware store is always a lifesaver. I can't tell you how many keys I've had made here, lightbulbs purchased, tape, vinegar, nails, screws- I think they sell everything. I love supporting local businesses and the people here are so friendly and extra helpful. It's a jam packed store and they all know exactly where everything is. Not to mention I get a ton of packages routed here via UPS and they know my name, face & address by now - lol. Supporting local businesses! With shelter in place in full effect we found ourselves at home doing some re-arranging and home DIY projects. Since we stayed close to home with the occasional walks we found this hardware store across the street from Trader Joe's. We were able to get some supplies, screws, and hardware for our projects. The owner helped us both times we came in and was really helpful. It's also nice that you can come in and get help right away whereas giant chain stores you gotta walk the aisles to locate the staff. Helpful staff with plenty of knowledge for the most simple task to more difficult issues in your home. Very highly stocked store and they most certainly can order things for you as well. Absolutely heroic local business and truly indispensable in the pandemic; without them it's entirely possible I would have perished from the earth months ago. Over the past year or so I have wandered into this store in search of, and successfully located: screws, bedframe brackets, furniture floor pads, a simple metal over-the-door hook, a 1-to-3 three-prong outlet adapter, a sewing kit, uncommon wattage CFL lightbulbs, a dowel for a toilet paper roll, mason jars, and--in a life-saving moment where it looked as though all was lost--a replacement for my French press. Prices entirely not bad on an SF neighborhood scale; they can get you far faster anything you can get cheaper, and far cheaper (given factoring in shipping, gas, and wait time) anything you can get faster. Efficient service as well; the store is so jam packed with stuff that you might not find what you're looking for simply by walking through, though odds are that they have it and if they do I've never not seen them be able to locate it right away. Five stars means "as good as it gets". Four stars from means "It is as good as one wants or needs." Proximity (to me) affords the many experiences over several years to make this favorable review. This hardware has about everything one needs, from kitchen equipment; painting supplies; gardening stuff (including poles for your tomato plants!); cleaning stuff, "hardware", etc. etc. The store covers more subjects that one would expect by using narrower aisles and products stacked high (as well as in two back rooms). Staff is quite helpful, steering me away from the carpet cleaner I wanted to one noticeably superior. Another time one reached around the end of an aisle and retrieved the item I wanted (without actually seeing the item)! Plus, it is a UPS point: For drop-off and to receive your deliveries. Proximity and competence may be the determining factors. This is not a Brownies, Rylees nor Cliff's Variety but for most needs, Nob HIll Hardware will satisfy. read more

I recommend taking your business elsewhere, especially if you are a woman. Owner (?) talked down to me as if I could not complete a project on my own and told me to tell my electrician to find a new profession when the fixture I wanted to wire was not compatible with the switch I purchased. When I brought the switch back, he accused me of "ruining" the box it came in and assured me no one would buy this product from him again. The box was not ruined at all, he just didn't want to give me $70 back. All the while, speaking aggressively and saying not to bring back a damaged item "next time". Luckily there will not be a next time! The other 1 star reviews make sense - this man is aggressive and condescending. I really like the guys that own this store. They're friendly, eager to help if you have questions, and genuinely glad to be in business. I think this store has been there for about a year. It's in a kind of seedy location so I'm glad to see they're still there and I hope they stay. I think you can find just about anything you can find at Brownie's at Nob Hill Hardware. It's a block away from my place so it's perfect for me. I've been able to find everything I was looking for in all the times I've been there - they have it all, from nuts and bolts to tools to kitchen and bath items. I had to return a couple light bulbs today because I realized my lamp was broken (not the lightbulb), and it was no problem. He gladly gave me a refund, even without the receipt. You can't get very excited over a hardware store, but really, this place is the BOMB. I wanted some small pieces of finished wood to put up some shelves in random places around my apartment and was really not looking forward to having to ZipCar it out to a Home Depot somewhere. My regular goto hardware stores carried SFA in wood, so I'd been putting off this home renovation for awhile in the hopes I'd have a reason to go out to Emeryville. While up at the TJs though, I saw Nob Hill Hardware across the street and lettering on their window indicated they carried wood! How does this happen, says I. Some quick Yelping later, I finally got some time to head in there. Sure enough, the super friendly guy working there brought me to the location where they keep shelving board. It's not a huge selection of sizes and colours, but it was absolutely perfect for what I was looking for. I explained the sizes I wanted and he found me some pieces close to it and cut them down to fit my needs! I picked up a few other things while I was there, then had to come back the next day to return two of them (damn concrete ceiling, I am NOT drilling into you just to shove hooks up there!) The same guy served me and made the return quick and easy. It seems to be a standard that all hardware stores have small, narrow aisles and as much stuff in them as possible (from the regular hardware fare to kitschy whatevers). That being said, given the proximity to my apartment and the super awesome friendly guy there, I will happily make this my regular hardware goto store. read more

I have two propane tanks I got for my grill that I purchased here at Nob Hill Hardware. They charge you about a $25 deposit for the tank plus the propane is about another $20-25. I decided I didn't need two tanks hanging around my basement so I decided to return the empty one today. The man working asked me for my receipt. Okay, that's fair, but I bought that tank months ago and paid a deposit for the canister. When I purchased it, no one said "makes sure to keep your receipt to prove you got that here". The man working insisted that I need a receipt and that he couldn't refund me my deposit because "how do I know you got that here?!" I told him that this isn't they type of thing people lie about. This store is the "friendly, small-town, mom and pop shop" in San Francisco. I'm here all the time for either something for a project I'm working on, or to just ask Michael or Marco's opinion on something. They are super nice and know how to help, and what will work for what you are looking for or suggest the best way to go in their opinion.
