Dave was the associate helping me and my father and Dave refused to look at my dad (who has darker skin than I do). I called the store at 10:05 to see if they would have the adapters I would need. As I called my Bluetooth disconnected, so I can tell the call started as I got to the headset, so I said, "Hello?" Robert's is a Haight Ashbury institution. The more my partner and I shop here the more we find ourselves coming back. We moved to the neighborhood shortly before the pandemic and didn't have a need to check out Robert's. This quickly changed with the onset of closures. Of course, Robert's is considered essential and for very good reason. You can find SO much here. Yes traditional hardware items but lots of small odds and ends that otherwise would be a search to many other stores. Plus they have things like toilet paper (the good kind!), masks, hand sanitizer, wipes, and all your sanitary and safety needs. However, we probably come back most frequently to pick up more plants or plant items for recently purchased plants. They have a great selection of fertilizers, pots, succulents, and much larger plants. And happily I can say their plants tend to thrive very well. So glad to have them in the neighborhood and hope they are here for many decades to come. read more

I don't write a lot of yelp reviews (5 in 13 years) but Robert's Hardware deserves your business! Here are three reasons why: 1) plant selection, 2) plant prices, and 3) customer service. I walked in for the first time today because their plant display caught my eye. I am fairly new to plants but I can't resist taking a peek any time I walk by a plant shop or a shop with a plant section. I walked out with three new plants and couldn't be happier! I got a 4" dracaena colorama (has pink margins) and two 4" Hawaiian snow bushes! I have never come across these plants in my research let alone seen these plants in a store here in SF! Even better they were so very reasonably priced! But the cherry on top was the customer service. I told the person that helped me (Drew?) that I was going to carry them home (about a mile) and he cut the side out of a cardboard box and nestled the three plants inside. It was a perfect fit! The staff at Roberts Hardware are phenomenal. They really go out of their way to help you! I stopped in for a small succulent and plastic floor guard for another plant I had at home and was immediately greeted and led to the area I needed to be in. I quickly found what I needed and more, and actually ended up buying another house plant and pot (with a ceramic floor guard) because it was such a good deal. The guy helping me out offered to drill any pots I had at home that did not have proper drainage - as long as they weren't too busy - if I couldn't find the "right one" with a floor guard which I thought was so nice and great. I will definitely take him up on his offer if I don't end up finding something. The only bummer is that they close so early. I usually go to Cole Hardware up the street when I randomly need things because they are open after 8pm on weekdays. I will do better to remember things I need sooner, or try to wait until the weekend just so I can come here instead because plant wise, Roberts Hardware has what I need. read more

I've lived in the Haight for about 6 or 7 years now and Roberts Hardware has been my go-to for all my random household needs - light bulbs, plug fuses for every time my roommate blows a fuse when she turns on her space heater the same time I'm blow drying my hair, succulents, key copies and what not. I've also recently become a plant mom to plants that will actually die without attention so I came in yesterday to pick up some potting soil and some other things. There were a decent amount of people in the store but everyone was in masks and being really good about walking down different aisles as to respect social distancing. Lots of customers were on a first name basis with the employees which just makes me love this store even more. Side note- if they don't have what you need on hand you can order on their website that can be delivered to the store for easy pick up. This option is also convenient if you don't have time to shop around and just want your stuff to be ready and paid for when you get there. Just go to the back of the store by the key copy area and someone will grab your order for you. read more

It warms my heart that my first review for Roberts Hardware was back in 2006 - when I had first moved back to the city. My most recent encounter with this magical store - was a productive trip to replace a shower head and toilet seat. The staff here went out of their way to make sure that I manifested a solid shower head with optimal water pressure and they gave me some great advice when it came to other household questions as well. Roberts Hardware is my favorite. The staff care. The staff know. And their products are top notch. And I am still convinced that Roberts Hardware has some of the best plants around. Everything you can imagine at amazingly affordable prices. One day my shower drain started to back up. I asked the building manager what I should do, and he gave me an eco-friendly enzyme treatment that I could apply 3 days in a row, and everything should have turned out fine. If after 3 days there were still a problem, he could snake the drain. After one treatment, the drain back-up was 100%. Standing water in the shower pan. I went back and asked him to snake the drain that day. Round 1: He showed up with a long-handled snake, with about a 3-foot pipe penetration and a nice swirly corkscrew on the end. Jamming it down the drain and twisting, he managed to grasp and pull out what looked like a full head of hair. My hair, which had been going down that drain for five years. I could have made a wig out of it, except it was ALL BLACK with crud, and touching it was beyond me. Still, there was more hair down there, because the now-black water was still standing in the shower stall. Round 2: The building manager showed up with a 25-foot long cable, which he tried to jam down the drain to get at the rest of the hair, but it wouldn't go past a bend in the pipe. So he had another idea, and off he went to the hardware store. Round 3: This time he had a bladder, which looked like a little hand grip for a hose, but which was actually designed to expand to seal the pipe. We ran a hose through the bedroom window and across the bedroom floor, 100% wool "Haitian sand" white carpeting, and into the bathroom. With the bladder attached, he pushed the hose down the drain and had his assistant turn on the water a little to get a pressure seal. Once the seal was firm, he had his assistant turn the water pressure all the way up, and -- Presto! -- hydraulically blasted the hair down the pipe to the sewer main and presumably to the North Beach waste water treatment plant. Ta da! Now the drain was flowing freely. I cleaned up the hose, the bathroom, and the bedroom, and thanked him for his experience and persistence. Aftermath: I didn't want to see this scene again in another five years. So I walked over to Roberts Hardware and took a look at some drain screens. A clerk asked if there were anything he could do to help, and I asked him whether a small bathtub drain screen would do the trick. I didn't want it jamming down the pipe, after all. No, he replied, a larger drain screen would be better, because if I put the small one under the drain cover, I might forget to clean it later. But he agreed with my building manager about the enzyme, and said that he treated all the drains in his apartment building once a year. The enzyme wouldn't dissolve the hair, it would dissolve the calcite deposits that formed on the inside of the pipe, which were catching the hair and keeping it from flowing into the sewer main. I bought both size screens for under $10 just to be on the safe side, and brought them home for my own experimentation. The small screen worked just fine. The drain screen fit right under the drain cover, and I could actually see it if I cared to look. I figured if we used the enzyme when we changed the shower head filters, and cleaned the drain screen whenever we noticed slow flow, we would never have this problem again. I took the bigger screen back to Roberts for a full refund. Take-aways: Enzyme for 3 days straight once a year: free, courtesy of my building manager. A small bathtub drain screen in the shower drain to trap hair before it gets into the pipe: $4.00. Never seeing water backed up in my shower again: priceless. Love hanging out in the Haight and taking a leisurely stroll past Robert's to see that day's selection of plants and succulents. Like what you see outside? There are more neat things to be seen inside! Small store, but lots of little corners to hide little gems in. We have purchased several succulents from here and love them. Barely enough room in the store to bring your purchase to the counter and check out, but that's one of it's charms. I was disappointed with a staff there. I was eager to check out this hardware store because of the great reviews however I get there yesterday and found a lovely plant I wanted to purchase and the man behind the counter, looking at me struggle just continued to stand and stare at me and tells me to place it in front of the counter. Then I asked if he could wrap it for me since it was a big pot so I can carry it with the rest of my stuff a few blocks since my car was not close by and he just pointed to a box of paper and said, "there's paper you can do it." Roberts is incredible. Let me explain, through a colorful anecdote, yes? My brother, he is my best friend. He is also an idiot. We call him the "pest." He always takes things to the next level. He lives on the east coast, and was out visiting a week ago. We had a few drinks. Then it was bed time (early Cal game the next day). He was brushing his teeth. I thought it would be a good idea to slap the toothbrush out of his mouth. Cause that's how I do things. It flew into the toilet. We then had a little scuffle over who was to get it out of the toilet. My solution: (I'm the older brother) Try to shove his hand into the toilet. His solution (the pest): flush the toilet. Yup. It went down, but obviously not all the way. The toilet has been a mess since. Back to Roberts: I have a secret weapon anytime something breaks or needs work at my apartment. It's Roberts Hardware. This place, and one guy especially whose name escapes me (he has longish hair, is wonderfully friendly, and runs the walking tours of the Haight), has every answer. You walk in with a problem, you walk out with a solution. These guys have helped me (who is a home repair idiot) fix many, many problems. Back to my story: So today I went to Roberts. I described the problem. The guy I was talking knew what to do immediately. He walked me through how to use this auger, and explained how it may work, and what to do next if it didn't work. Of course it worked. The toothbrush came floating up into the bowl after just one try. Now the toilet is back to its old (fabulous) self. Back to Roberts for the big finish: I am not a man's man when it comes to hardware. But I have a suspicion that after a few more years of life as a homeowner in the Haight, and many more trips to Roberts, I just might be. If you live anywhere near the Haight, check these guys out. The selection is great, they are super helpful (see above), and there is something fun about walking out onto Haight street with a Toilet Auger and stereo cable. read more

I typically avoid this place as I find them to be rather over-priced ... while I'm on the subject, I typically avoid any store on Haight Street as nothing annoys me more than trying to walk quickly from point A to point B only to get stuck behind some stoned out tourists that don't even realize they're taking up the sidewalk while they walk 4 people across and star-gaze and swerve. Seriously. Move to the right. grrrrr. Anyhow, where was i? so the other day I lose my mind over the bathroom light that's been burned out ... and yes, it took 3 weeks to annoy me but once I snapped, project-bulb was a go. I had just under an hour before my dinner plans so Roberts was the only option. I head over there ... pissed at the light, pissed at the idiots that walk slow on haight, pissed that i didn't fix the light sooner ... just pissed. Seriously, the nicest guy helped me find the bizarre shape/sized light thing that I needed ... even though I pulled a dumb move in my frustration and left the original light at home!! Um, he was even nice when I came back 20 minutes later after discovering that I bought the wrong size. As for the bathroom - let there be light! read more

Outstanding customer support and variety! My girlfriend and I stopped by with a project in mind for making a light fixture. It is important to note that we really had no idea how to do this. However, when we left we were almost experts on how to make a multi-threaded light fixture. Stan helped us and he was such a wealth of knowledge and support. So it's a Saturday morning and I decide I can't stand to look at my walls. They're not bad walls -- just marked with a couple of years of dog slobber, furniture moving mishaps and the memory of splatter marks from when the top shot off the blender and spewed stuff all over creation. I need paint. It's a beautiful day. And Roberts Hardware is a 10-minute walk from the casa. I call them up, give them the Benjamin Moore ID number, head out the door, and walk in to find the paint ready and waiting for me at the front desk. The paint guy here (I can't remember his name) is very friendly and he moves way faster than most people in the Haight. The scottish man with supenders is the best help. He has very helpful architectural and construction knowlege, especially with Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Who knew that hanging up a ceiling fern required so much skill. He not only showed me how to locate my ceiling joists properly but shared tricks like inserting a nail through a hook to screw it in, after using the nail to make the hole for it. The staff at Roberts Hardware are so nice. I was locked out of my business nearby because someone had accidentally reset our lockbox. We purchased the lock box from Roberts, so I headed over there to see if they could help. Steve from Roberts Hardware drove over to my business (a few blocks away) and helped me break open the lock box. It all took maybe 30 mins, which was above and beyond what I expected. He returned with a refurbished lock box to replace the old one, already programmed with the previous code. Thank you so much for helping me out of a jam! Very friendly staff, chatty, helpful. Went in with a project and the staff helped me pick out a plant, drill a hole in the pot it went in AND helped me plant it on the spot. Oh, and I wasn't charged for drilling the hole. They were very friendly, helpful and affordable. Their prices can be steep, but overall a great place to shop! I just came back from Cole Hardware in Cole Valley and it was the opposite. I even considered waiting half an hour until Roberts opened because the staff was so unhelpful and rude - but time dictated I go to Cole's. A true neighborhood gem! They have built their inventory around exactly the kinds of things people need to keep their old victorians in good shape, and their employees regularly go the extra mile. I've gotten great advice from Tom, the cashier is always patient and helpful, and the paint guys in pack really helped me out of a jam when one of my old paint cans exploded on their paint-can-shaker. I came in here not knowing nothing I literally just told them I'm building shelves for my room and I have the pieces but don't know what nails to use cause I kept braking my wall everytime i hammered In nails. So the young guy showed me all types of screws nd wierd shit that I didn't know that exsisted forgot half the names of it but any ways I got these brackets to help it stand and these plastic screws that doesn't brake your wall !!! he also gave me tips on how I should set it up so it can be more sturdy !!!!
