So I got this notice from the City you see. Fix the sewer vent on the sidewalk in front of the house or else. Also cut the weeds you bum. Well, I didn't know what the or else was but I thought I better not fight City Hall or they'd come and get me or repossess the house or something so I stupidly went to Home Depot and told the guy who obviously did not want to help me that I needed a sewer grate, and the metal box that it goes in. Since the 1940's the plate was deteriorated and the box was gone. The guy that clearly did not want to help me had the grate deal but he told me that nobody made the metal box anymore. I would have to fabricate it myself out of iron bar stock. That meant heavy cutting, welding and other major labor to construct a simple piece that common sense said somebody made and sold. He would not be moved. Nobody made it, we don't have it. He didn't say get lost but it sure looked like he wanted to. So I went to the laptop, found Chu Supply, and gave them a call. Sure, we have that. Come on in. Ahem. So I did. Right there on the shelf, exactly what I wanted sitting right there. Sell them all the time they said. They even had the concrete I needed to fill in around the thing. good sized bag, cheap. From take a hike to sure we have it in minutes. Why I went to Home Depot is beyond me. The guy there wanted to tell me where to go. Now I don't have to. I know where to go and it's not Home Depot. Yes, I did cut the weeds. It was glorious. read more

This neighborhood family owned hardware store is my go to when I need keys made. There was a display of Millard windows so they offer so much more than you see. Just need to ask. I don't go in expecting high energy service. It's low key, maybe even can be unfriendly but that does bother me as I expect this going in. read more

What a great neighborhood hardware store that specializes in plumbing supplies. It is one of 4 Chu Supply stores in The Avenues. As many of the other houses in Sunset and Parkside districts, many have original plumping pipes. My mom's house was built in the 20's and we have had that house since the early 70's. The kitchen sink waste pipe was clogging since the waste and water pipe is not at an angle it was a mad rush together to the line to the street. Food was going down faster than it should and water wasn't flowing easliy out anymore. The lines from sink to underground had to be changed - barely anything was getting through. Called the ones closest to my mom's (Great Wall, the one on West Portal, and Chu on Vicente), and each were very helpful by referring to another because they didn't carry ABS pipes in 10 ft increments. The store was straightforward plumping supplies, and they helped Dude find what he needed. I am not sure if they were helpful because they ddn't want you touching everything during this Covid-19 SiP, or that was just their customer service. They knew where everything was, it was helpful to get in and out of there. It's really nice to have a hardware supply stores like these in the neighborhood. Good old fashion supplies, no fluff, nothing fancy. I am glad they are here because there was no way I was going to Home Depot! To wait in lines at HD and its people buying plants and redecorating their homes to keep busy! Ugh, makes me annoyed just thinking about going to HD. So, I was extemely happy to have Chu's close by! Support local! Shop Small! My go to from now on. Chu Supply on Lawton address is listed wrong on Yelp, so I added a photo of the address on their store - and tried changing it on Yelp. It's listed as 3644 Lawton St - but it is 3610 Lawton St, directly across the street from the gas station. We had some broken window screens that we wanted to replace. We found out that Lowe's & HD do not sell replacement screens. Lowe's did recommend a DIY kit (mesh, this plastic thingy. Total cost= $6) which we stupidly bought (and now can't find the receipt to return said items). Anyway, we didn't want to DIY but found out that this location sells custom made window screen replacements. We drove here with our busted up screens (hey better for them to measure it than for you to measure it all wrong and screw up the order, right?). First we overshot the store because the store sign was faded. For a hardware store, you'd expect them to take care of their sign so people can actually find them right? It was really dark in the store. I guess they didn't bother to string up lights either right? The only light was through the open doorway. The clerk measured our screens and they were available for pick up a week later. Each screen was $20/pop. The screens were nicely made. We would definitely come back if we ever need new window screens. read more

Chu Supply - Horrible! - Hardware Stores Near Me - San Francisco, California

Note: the name of this store is not "Ace Hardware" but rather "Chu Supply" -- however, they do sell Ace Hardware brand goods. This is a great little neighborhood hardware store -- they had everything we needed: drain stoppers, wire/mesh catch for drain, dimmer switches, etc. Obviously this is not a Home Depot (thank goodness!) so you won't find *everything* here, but it's fantastic to have a place like this so close to home. The shopkeepers were *very* helpful (I couldn't find the dimmer switches; they were tucked into a different spot than the regular light switches, other side of the isle -- I followed one of the employees back to get them) and sweetly conversational. When I mentioned that there were no reviews on Yelp yet, they said that most of their clientele were Chinese contractors -- too busy for social media (said with good humor). This is one of those classic, old neighborhood style hardware stores -- little corners with goods stacked up, odd little gems collecting dust among the more frequently purchased inventory. SERVICE WAS BAD!!!!! I will NEVER go back again. I order some stuff, they told me about 10 days it will be ready. 3 weeks later I still havent heard from them. I had to call them myself only to find out my product had been there and sitting there for several days according to the guy on the phone... HELLO WHERE WAS MY CALL. So yes if you want something affordable and cheap in prices go to this Chinese place. But the service is horrible. We ordered a glass a month ago and they told us it will take 2 weeks, after 2 weeks we go pick it up and it was too thick. The second time, another 2 weeks later, now 4 weeks today.. the glass is the wrong dimensions, too small in width and length. Like what the hell! It's written on the invoice/work order and each time it's wrong. Like what are they doing over there. It's ridiculous. I spoke with Melody and explained our situation because you have to pick it up at their other location on Vicente, which they aren't helpful and Melody wasn't either. I would not recommend. If there were a zero star, I would pick that. I ordered over a thousand dollars worth of bathroom supplies there. And then found out the mirror was too big, I went back to return it the day after, with the box unopened, and they charged me 20% restocking fee. This was never mentioned to me, nor was it stated anywhere in the invoice. Their reason was it was a special order item, thus the manufacturer charged them the fee. All b/s over there. Run away, and avoid that place. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot, where you can get refund and better service. These people at Chu is only nice when you go buy something, and they will push you to buy more than you need. read more

The girl "helping" me knew nothing about plumbing and was recommending parts that were clearly not the same as what I needed. Even after I found the parts online and showed her pictures, she continued to tell me the incorrect parts were what I needed. I got everything I needed on Amazon.com without dealing with terrible service and employees who clearly have no knowledge about plumbing. Don't blame Amazon for small businesses failing, blame the total idiocy of employees of that small business. Won't be shopping here ever. read more

Thanks to Wendy H's review regarding window screen replacement and where to go. Did exactly what she described for 5 different windows around the house...took the old,bent screens off and dropped them off at Chu Supply (didn't bother measuring either). FYI, you have to pay first when you order. $20 per screen regardless of size. Quality of screens were good. We had a hard time putting them in, but that's because we don't normally take off and put on screens as a hobby, so no fault of the products. read more

I found this place on Yelp and boy am I glad. I had broken window screens and couldn't find a place to get new ones or the old ones repaired. So onto Yelp I went and found Chu's supply. Went to the one on Noriega and he sent me to the one om Lawton. The person that heped me was pleasant but a man of few words. I showed him my screens and he said $20, sounded reasonable to me. He measured them, wrote up my receipt and told me they would be ready Saturday (it was Wednesday. He asked if I wanted the old ones or did I want him to dispose of them, I asked him to dispose of them (no extra charge) Picked them up and they fit perfectly. Slid them right on and he puts metal handles instead of the cheap plastic ones. I am one happy camper. Definitely recommend. read more

A good place and reasonable price to buy various home improvement and repair items if you are in San Francisco sunset side. They sell water heater as well. It has the best deal on making house keys for $1 each. You could have a spare for your original house or car keys, and then some more like a spare for a spare key. ;-) read more

I found this little plumbing supply store just down the road from a relative of mine who I was visiting last week. I needed a 6" long galvanized pipe 5/8" diameter to fix a shower problem and thought I would see if they had it. WOW to my surprise they had more then I expected and the prices were very reasonable. Customer service friendliness could be a little better but this could be due to language and culture differences. Overall I am very happy I ran into this place. This is now my new plumbing shop spot. read more
