Great choice for our five-year anniversary dinner. It was tough deciding between Eddie V's, Bob's, Capital Grill, and other great steakhouses in the area. We hadn't been to this place before, so we took a leap and made a reservation.
First 10 minutes:
We were immediately seated at our reserved table in a great section. The ambiance drew us in instantly. The pleasant modern jazz (live music) was relaxing and made the experience more "posh." It also wasn't too loud.
The elegant decor was half French-style (the dining area), half Texas-style (the bar). The hostess asked if we were in for a special occasion, and we told them it was our 5-year anni. That info permeated to the server, manager, food runners, etc. which made it seem like they actually gave a crap about us.
Ordering experience:
Our server was great. Salesy? Absolutely. You'll get that in most steakhouses. But, they kept us happy so I didn't care. They did a great job adding suggestions based on our preferences and getting our order right.
Actual food:
The wife had a filet salad and a baked potato. The steak was exceptionally tender, and everything was hot and fresh. Just fantastic.
My food was another story. I had a 12oz filet, which is supposed to be almost tender enough to cut with a fork. It was easily the toughest steak I've ever had. Seasoning was on point, the temperature (medium rare, the only way to eat steak) was picture-perfect, just the texture was like chewing through a cheap sirloin. I didn't send it back for a couple reasons, 1. I've never sent a steak back, and 2. It was pretty good other than the texture so I didn't care to wait for another steak. I also would've loved to have the server do the usual "hey, cut into the steak for me" when I got it, but they were busy with the much more "spendy" table next to us, so I was about 76% through the steak before they checked on us (my only complaint about them). I should've flagged them down and sent the steak back, in hindsight.
I still give this place 5 stars and I'll explain why shortly.
Post-dinner:
We love a good decaf after dinner. Our server made some that evening during the food so it was fresh and ready when we were done. They also brought my wife a NY-style cheesecake (I have dairy allergies so I couldn't eat any dessert) to celebrate the anniversary. Overall, it was a fantastic experience start to finish with only one speed bump.
I decided to talk to the manager about the steak in hopes that they'd prevent other filets from being served that tough. His reaction was surprised, but very empathetic. By this point, we had already paid for our food. I do that so it doesn't seem like I'm trying to get a free meal. Regardless, after objecting a couple times, Eric comp'd the steak and ultimately sealed what was a perfect night for us. We ended up increasing the tip for the server since they did a great job.
Overall: 5 stars
They didn't have to do the free desert, make coffee, or comp the tough steak, but they did anyway, and definitely made us loyal diners next time we're in Austin. Highly recommend, hence the 5 stars. read more
