I ate at III Forks back in Mid-August when I was visiting my friend near Austin, TX. I have been disappointed with my experiences at most steakhouses, ranging from the cheaper ones to the more expensive. In fact, the Chart House San Antonio was a HUGE disappointment! You can read my review of the restaurant here on Yelp. At any rate, I was disheartened; how can it be that a restaurant in Texas that costs that much have a bad steak? Or a chef who can't cook an even adequate one?
To start, some of my steak eating experiences. I have been to Morton's Steakhouse, in their Bethesda, MD location and their location in Downtown Vancouver near the Four Seasons Hotel and waterfront. Their steaks are overpriced and their service was tolerable at best. I recall an instance where their double-filet had one part of the filet completely overcooked and inedible. When you pay 50$ for a steak, you expect certain standards. Also, I went to Ruth's Chris, also the Bethesda, MD location. The steak quality there was better than at Morton's but again, I was disappointed. Their Filet was around 40$ and I couldn't eat the steak when it came out! The steak temperature was too high and it burned my tongue trying to eat it. I understand that Ruth's Chris has a high temperature plate to maintain the meat temperature but it is unacceptable that I have to wait for it to cool off to eat it. Once the steak cooled off, I ate it and felt like it lacked flavor; I regretted not ordering some side sauce. Again, very disappointing.
I also ate at BLT steak, their Washington D.C. Location. Very good, but even there, the steak itself was on the dry side and I had to use their peppercorn sauce. Good steak, but for the price, around 50$, I expected better. I have been to longhorn many times, which isn't comparable, but it makes me crave for better meat.
On a side note, I always get my steaks at least medium rare.
Anyways, I heard from many steak obsessed people that III Forks Texas had really good steaks so I reserved there. It would be my birthday dinner with my mom. We drove there on a Friday night and the valet was easy enough to manage. When we walked in, we were promptly escorted to a full, four person table, as I specifically requested on Opentable. My mom is very picky and she would prefer a bigger table, despite there being two of us, so I was already impressed that the restaurant accommodated. Although, the restaurant at the time wasn't full; it was around 6pm.
Our waiter, I forgot his name, was excellent. He knew the menu from memory and didn't need to clarify who ordered what. I ordered the 8 oz filet. My mom, being paranoid about red meat and undercooked meat, opted for the beef tenderloin tips, well-done, to my dismay. I also ordered the lobster bisque soup and a cocktail.
Food:
The lobster bisque was very well made and not overly creamy, which helps me since I am somewhat lactose intolerant. It had actual REAL lobster in it, which isn't a big deal but it is worth noting. My filet was cooked perfect medium rare-- I originally wanted to get rare but there was a slight miscommunication on my end. The steak had a good amount of pepper or peppercorn on it which gave it good flavor. They also didn't use that much butter, at least, from what I could tell. The fact that the steaks come with mashed potatoes, veggies, and creamed corn as part of the price was impressive. I don't think you can find any other steakhouse that would sell a 8 oz filet of this quality with three sides for under 40$.
My mom's beef tenderloin tips tasted great too! I was afraid, given that well-done usually sucks the flavor straight out of the meat. I was glad to be surprised. I have not tasted well-done meat that good in forever. My mom was also pleased with the service and the food which is a rarity. She usually loves to nitpick and complain at restaurants.
I was so skeptical about the steak that I ordered their peppercorn sauce for an extra 3$. I regretted the decision. In fact, I couldn't even use the sauce because the steak itself tasted great as is.
Decor:
Was very southern but tasteful and classy. There was jazz being played in the background which was a nice touch. The room was dark but not so dark that my mom couldn't read the menu. Again, a huge plus. The waiter was very professional and knew when not to interrupt our meal. This is a skill that I notice only at the best sort of restaurants.
Other tidbits:
They did offer wine but both my mom and I don't usually drink wine. The servers were mostly men but I think there were some women mixed in. The chairs were comfortable too. The manager was very active and friendly and came to check on us in order to see how our meal was.
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and I hope to visit my friend again, just to have a chance to eat here again. I hope to find an outstanding LA steakhouse that will match III Forks. Best steakhouse experience I have ever had. read more
