Food-6/10. I remember when Metro Diner was always doing unique dishes. The current menu feels standard diner and for the taste of the food, I'd rather pay the cheaper prices at other chain breakfast joints. I got the creme brûlée coffee which wasn't bad, but their cups are small and they don't fill them fully. That combined with the fact that when hey refill your cup it's with regular coffee is a bit disappointing. Though what truly disappointed was the fried chicken benedict. While the chicken was good, the poached egg was very under done and barely holding together and the yolk was quite cold. The hollandaise felt watery and lacked flavor. Meanwhile the home fries were a bit soggy instead of crisp. Service-9/10. My drink order was taken immediately as they seated me and brought quickly as well so I hadn't had a chance to look at the menu at all by the time she brought my coffee. I asked for a minute to get a look but then she didn't come back for quite a while. After placing my order she was gone for quite a while and I was longing for a coffee refill. I hadn't seen her in so long. I started to wonder if maybe she had gone home and someone else was going to be covering my area but hadn't made their way to me yet. Eventually, someone else brought my food out and they finally asked if I would like a refill on my coffee. Then a bit later she showed up to drop the check off. What was frustrating about this was that the restaurant was probably only half full. And despite that I struggled to be able to get a coffee refill. Atmosphere-4/10. The space feels like they just cram as many tables in as possible to get as many butts in the seat as possible. They take you into a middle table that you have to navigate through other seated people to get to and the spaces to navigate through are far too narrow. The noise levels inside are aggravatingly high. The music they're playing over their speakers is so loud that everybody is yelling to talk to the person across the table from them and be heard. And it just ends up everybody being louder and louder to be heard over the music. By the time I left, I had a throbbing headache. As far as the exterior, parking is a bit dreadful. Expect to have to park behind the building and walk to the front to enter. All in all, I can certainly say this was not the cozy breakfast experience. I had hoped it would be. It feels like at least this location has become overly commercial.

Completed an order on line and was given a time of pick up of 1046am. I arrived on time, check in and was told 5-10 mins. I waited patiently for my order. 20mins passed. I asked for an update and was told another 5-10mins. 45 mins later I notice a family coming out that had came in behind me leaving. They had already say, ate, paid, and left and I was still waiting for my order. Wtf?!?!?! I asked to see the manager, Jackie. She asked me how she could help. I explained and she said she would refund my monies. She walked off. Had to ask for her again after several more mins of waiting. When she came back out, she was rude and short with her answers. Worst service ever. Of course it began with two employees gossiping at sign-in, longer than our 20 minute wait. Our waitress put us off, after seeing us, cleaning tables before coming to us. 15 minutes later, order drinks, had to remind her after another 10 minutes. Asked for water with lemon and I got lemonade. Water with no ice, came with ice. Forgot coffee. Waitress was so bad, we had two other waitresses ask it we had been served. Two of four orders incorrect, had to ask for utensils and napkins. When food came, asked for ketchup/hot sauce - never came. Had to retrieve it myself from another table. The cooks have literally tried to choke each other out in the kitchen. The cops were called. The manager openly berates and embarrasses the employees and punishes them for making small mistakes by sending them home and leaving the business short staffed and placing more responsibility on the other employees. I stopped by for lunch after being invited to try their Cuban sandwich, a fitting challenge for a shop that has built its reputation on oversized portions and doing things the old fashioned way. The bread is baked in house, the mojo marinade is made from scratch, and that attention to detail shows up in every bite. Calling this sandwich "large" doesn't quite capture it. It's enormous. Thick enough to make you question your strategy before the first bite, and easily enough food for two, maybe even four lighter eaters. Inside the soft house-made bread is a generous stack of mojo marinated pulled pork, thick slices of ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard. It's substantial without feeling sloppy, every ingredient has a purpose. The timing of this visit couldn't have been better. I had just returned from two weeks in Miami, where Cuban sandwiches and Medianoches were part of my regular diet. Those flavors were still fresh in my memory. Blue Boy isn't trying to recreate Little Havana. This isn't served on traditional crusty Cuban bread, and that's perfectly fine. This is Jacksonville's interpretation, a Duval Cuban that respects the original while confidently doing its own thing. The pork is juicy and packed with citrus and garlic from the mojo. The ham adds saltiness, the Swiss melts into every layer, and the mustard and pickles provide the sharp, tangy contrast that every great Cuban needs. It checks every box while carving out its own identity. Some sandwiches are lunch. This one is lunch, dinner, and maybe tomorrow's snack if you somehow manage not to finish it all. Blue Boy proves that honoring tradition doesn't always mean copying it. Sometimes the best local classics are the ones that confidently become their own tradition.
