Despite the bustling crowd, I opted to sit at the bar during my visit to Nicole's on the River. While it did take a bit longer than usual for my food to arrive due to the high volume of people, I must say, the wait wasnt too bad and I was entertained by the ladies working at the restaurant. I ordered a "simple" breakfast, and Nicole's certainly did not disappoint. The food was delicious, perfectly showcasing their skill even with classic breakfast fare that "can't be messed up." The eggs were cooked just right, the grits and hash browns were flavorful and cheesy, and the bacon was crispy and satisfying. The cook in the kitchen knew her spot because she was putting out food left and right. The lively atmosphere only added to the experience, making it feel like a true Southern breakfast spot.

We were not greeted at all when we came in (it was busy, but not crazy busy). It fell to a customer who had sympathy for us to tell us to seat ourselves. The wait staff ignored several customers who came and sat down. Our food, despite just being biscuits and gravy and an English muffin, took over 30 min. to get to us. The food was so-so, but the service was not great.

For the price the food wasn't bad. We love to frequent mom and pop places, but I wouldn't say I would be itching to come back. The grits were a little dry. I got a breakfast burrito and I really like it when they are grilled, but this one was not. It was however warm. If you add cheese to anything, it is a slice of Kraft cheese. My preference is shredded cheese, but again that is my preference and some people may enjoy the cheese they use. The bacon and other breakfast meats were cooked well. I loved their coffee, although they have no Splenda or stevia, which again is a preference. The staff was friendly and the place was clean

Very good service, delicious coffee! We had the "Big Cheese" burger which was enormous! I could only eat 1/2! The burger was even too big for the bun! We will be back for sure!!!

This place is a awesome delight hidden from view but know by the locals. If you have not been you are missing out on great food and that is an understatement. The buffet is country food for $10 and every vegetable cooked to southern perfection. Fried chicken and fish and three desserts to choose from....Oh my! Today our servers was Karen and she was amazing. She was on the spot bringing the drinks and filling them up when they got low. Southerners do drink alot of tea! If you go in here definitely ask for Karen cause she is so friendly and you will love her! Today the group at the table had everything from breakfast to 1 pound burgers and it was all fabulous. We wish we lived close enough to come back each week, but maybe we can make the trip to visit Karen and the wonderful food once a month. PS: The strawberry shortcake and homemade coconut cream pie made us waddle out the door. So full.

I usually shy away from this especially since Covid due to sanitary concerns, but all my worries went out the door when I put the food in my mouth!!! Pancit - 8/10 - great flavors, the noodles were a little dry but that may be because it was sitting out too long. Shrimp obud - 10/10- absolutely delicious! it had bamboo shoots in it and the curry was so flavorful I could drink it. Dinuguan - 7/10- it was tasty but couldn't get over that it was pork blood.... Pork Adobo and Chicken curry-8/10- both had great flavors. Really friendly guy behind the counter that recommended the best dishes.

The cafe is more on the smaller side but it's cozy and the customer service is always happy and friendly! When you walk inside, there's a hot bar with all the food items available that day. You can check their Facebook page for their menu each day! You can get combos like an entree and a side, two entrees and a side, etc. On the shelves near the windows, there are local Filipino desserts like crinkles, puto (rice cake), flan, etc for sale. They also sell mac salad in the fridge and some dried fish on the shelves. What I love about this cafe is that they have a small snacks/drinks/candy market next to the dining area. The dining area is a good size and faces the parking lot. On this particular Saturday, we had the following entrees and sides: Lechon (roasted pig), Kaldereta (Filipino beef stew), and some rice! The lechon pieces were big and the skin (my fav!) was crispy, salty, and golden! The meat was also juicy and not dry. What I like to do is dip the meat into some white vinegar to give it some acidity since the lechon is on the heavy side after a few bites. The Kaldereta was hearty, rich, flavorful and it reminded me of an elevated beef stew. The potatoes and carrots literally melted in my mouth! I gave my combo plate a 8.5/10! My husband had Humba (braised pork belly that is slow cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, fermented black beans, and sugar) and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He shared some pieces of it with me and it was smooth as butter. It was sweet and salty and his rice soaked up all the sauces. Definitely a must try! I would give it a 9/10 because the flavors were so rich and it made me want even more! The prices are reasonable for how much food you're getting! They also sell desserts like halo halo (shaved iced with fresh fruits, taro ice cream, toppings like flan, condensed milk, jellies, beans, etc.) I've personally had the halo halo and it's one of my favorites! Super refreshing on a hot summer day. They also sell mango and taro flavored cakes but you have to call in advance for whole cakes. Their cakes are light, delicious, and fluffy! I especially enjoy the mango cake because you get chunks of fresh, champagne mangoes on and inside the cake. We've been coming here for years and don't plan on stopping. My husband is a bit of a Filipino food snob at times, but Lola's definitely has a special place in his heart! They do military discounts too, FYI!

I think that is a testament to how good and how popular they are. Everyone was very genuinely nice offering great service. Our meals were cooked to order and were served hot and fresh and in just the right amount of time. They had daily specials to choose from or order right off the menu. Orange juice served in mason jar mugs. They are happy to customize any dish for you. We ordered the country fried steak and gravy with home fries and scrambled eggs with cheese. Also served with a biscuit. They offer assorted jellies etc. We also ordered a build your own omelette with home fries and an English muffin. Portion sizes were perfect. The home fries were done right and very flavorful. Eggs and omelette were cooked to perfection. The gravy for the steak was not your average bland gravy. It was perfect sausage gravy and very thick and flavorful. They have a variety of hot sauces available for the eggs. Hardest part was deciding what to order because everything sounded and looked so good. Grumpy's is a small casual place. Feels like your favorite small diner. Not loud despite being busy and a full house. They have benches and outdoor games to play while you wait to be seated. They close at 2pm and they do offer lunch entrees if you don't want breakfast. We thought it was fantastic and will be visiting their other locations around Jax as well. Highly recommended!!!
