IB's is located on a busy street among many other restaurants and shops. Parking is hit or miss - mostly everyone is double parking out in front. I did a to go order and it was done in a timely manner, maybe about 10 - 15 minutes. I was excited because I had been craving a good cheesesteak sandwich and I heard good things about this spot. I tried one of their famous cheesesteaks sandwiches - their spicy steak cheesesteak and an order of their steak fries. The spicy steak cheesesteak was decent, but I felt like they skimped out on the cheese and the bread could had been toasted more. (don't worry...it was split between 2 people) Delicious and messy as it's supposed to be. Recommend: 100% YES! But I also recommend getting a lot of napkins. Item: Chili Cheese House Cut Fries Review: Hot Beef Chili mixed with melty nacho cheese sitting on a bed of fresh hot fries. How can that not be good?! My only mistake is that I got too excited when ordering and didn't notice that you can choose between house cut, curly, tater tot, waffle or onion rings. I will definitely be going back next time I'm in the area and better believe I won't be making the same mistake of just basic fries. Recommend: For sure recommend this but you will be faced with the difficult decision of what fry type you want with that tasty chili cheese. It's a little hole in the wall on Durant, there's no seating inside. You're just faced with the menu, the grill, soda machine, and lots of tasty orders coming up. So, I finally decided to get some. I ordered (shoutout to Snackpass) and got a taste of what everyone has hyped! I ordered a Garlic Steak (cheesesteak) as well as bacon fries. Firstly, serving sizes are pretty big. The sandwich is 9 inches and the box of fries was packed and loaded with toppings. J was surprised by the weight of my bag when I picked up this food. The sandwich was full of steak, the garlic flavor was really nice. I got the works on it: lettuce, tomato, grilled onion, mayo, mustard, hot sauce (I think that's everything.) The only thing was the honey garlic sauce on the sandwich was slightly too sweet, then again it has honey in the name so I couldn't be shocked at it. The bacon fries came with bacon and cheese sauce. You can choose to get this with regular, crinkle, curly, tots, and onion rings! I got curly fries since I'm a sucker for them, but probably should've opted for tots (it was a little salty.) Overall the flavor was awesome, so I give it a 5/5! I'm not gonna dock any points because I made mistakes ordering haha. I ordered on Snackpass and my food was ready in 10 minutes. This spot always looks busy whenever I visit Berkeley. We randomly stopped here the other night, since it was still open after 9pm and I wanted something of more quality than a cheeseburger. We tried to call in our order, but the line was busy. However, I got to stay in the car while my boyfriend went out in the rain to order for us. We got curly fries, a surf & turf, and a mushroom - both sandwiches regular in size. Although inside looked packed, we didn't wait more than 15/20 min for our food. It took as about another 25 min to get home, but our food was still warm! And, was it delicious! Kinda disappointed it took me this long to try them, but happy I finally did. I have to say that it's a little messy to eat. There is no shortage of chopped ground beef and melty cheese. It is also pretty damn good. I've tried both the naked fries and chili cheese fries, and had curly fries for both of these. The fries are pretty good, I especially liked the chili cheese fries since they come with a very generous helping of cheese and chili which make them very flavorful, though the downside of that is the fries tend to get softer and soggier due to the amount of sauce. The workers were very fast with preparing my order. This IB's location is conveniently located next to the Durant Food Court just south of UC Berkeley's campus so you can grab a quick bite to eat from lunchtime all the way to pretty late in the evening. read more

I personally took the mushroom Philly cheese sandwich with a side of the cheesesteak fries. And I must say it was heavenly. That sandwich should definitely be eaten on site or in your car because if you take it anywhere else you won't be able to truly enjoy it to its maximum capability. Amazing cheesesteaks with lots of variations! Went on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm. I used to eat at the IB's in Oakland years ago. I was happy to see them as I happened to walk by and decided to stop. Glad I did. The cheesesteak was as good as I remembered. There were 5 people ahead of us, but it didn't take too long to get our food. About a 10 minute wait. The girl that took our order was patient as it took awhile to figure out what we wanted with all the options. The cheesesteak was huge! It was definitely enough for 2 people. SPEAKING AS AN ALUM - IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT As a UC Berkeley alum I loved going to IB's while I was an undergraduate student. There's something about their hoagies that separated from the rest of other hoagie places I've ate at. That was due to the toasted bun. This made the hoagie lighter and enjoyable to eat. As a student I would eat hoagies from IB's about twice a month especially after a Cal football game. It's been several years since I graduated however I would come to IB's at least once during the Cal football season. The last time I came here was about six years ago. Recently I came here about two weeks ago for Sunday lunch. When I entered IB's I noticed the salamander broiler, which was over the grill, was now removed. The staple of hoagies from IB's was the crunchy bread toasted from the salamander broiler. I did notice one of the cook placed the bun on the grill for toasting. Another concern I had was the multiple meat chooses of beef, chicken, turkey, and pork. In the past the meat was either beef or chicken (depending on the sandwich). I don't care about free range beef or free range chicken as hoagies aren't meant to be healthy. I ordered the IB's Original (my favorite tends to be the Mushroom Steak). When I got the hoagie and opened the wrapping as I squeezed the sandwich in my hand the bun was squishy not crunchy. I took a bite of the hoagie. It was delicious but not the same IB's hoagie I had in the past. Due to the soft bun the hoagie tasted heavy. I was so disappointed. Removing the salamander grill and not using it to toast the bun before placing the meat changed the texture of the hoagie. The salamander broiler might have been difficult for the cooks to maneuver while grilling but the bun was crunchy. When I took a bite of hoagie from IB's from the past the pieces of crust from the bread would fall to the table. IB's was my top two favorite places to eat while I was a student. Giving this place a 2-star rating hurts but appropriate as that Yelp rating refers "Could've been better". Yes the IB's I ate when I was a student was much better than the current IB's. Wow! Wow! Wow! I feel like I have never tasted REALLY TASTED a sandwich before. These flavors come ALIVE, it's insane! We got the Cookies sandwich with chicken and the Garlic sandwich with beef. We also grabbed some fries (Pro-tip: ask for them to put the bear style ingredients on top of garlic fries, you won't regret it.) Everything was packed full of phenomenal flavor! Every bite we were like "omg. OMG!!" Worth the wait! The sandwiches may take some time, but feel free to grab your number, check out the shops next door- by the time you get back, you're good to go. The ultimate "cheat" meal restaurant! I've eaten on-site once and placed a delivery order and I was not disappointed either time. The steak fries are HUGE and deliciously cheesy with a lot of steak. I liked adding the hot peppers they have as a condiment to the fries so if you order delivery you'll have to add a note for them to put those in your order. I've also had the burger and it was a really good classic burger. I thought it was going to be too greasy but it wasn't at all. I'd recommend eating at (or near) the location since cheese fries and cheesesteaks are best when fresh but note that there is limited seating. It's more of a grab and go type of place but they did have 2 tall round tables with stools around them. Also, the price for the amount of food you get is reasonable. I ordered a buffalo ranch with extra spicy but instead got a spicy steak with extra spicy and boy was it hot. The flavor was so good I wish I could've ate more of it, the only thing stopping me was the burning sensation. I wish I would've tasted my original order but I was too hungry to even complain. I LOVE this IB's location. I've been coming to eat here since I was in middle school. I personally feel like the food quality has always been consistent. But I also always get the bacon cheese fries sooooo I don't know I could be wrong. I've also had the bacon cheese fries at the Oakland location and it didn't compare to this place. I do feel like the proportion has gotten smaller over the years but it's whatever I still love this place and if I'm in the area I'll definitely stop by to grab some cheese fries. IB's is located right by UC Berkeley on Durant Ave and Telegraph. Right next to Bank of America and Gypsy's and all that jazz. There's a parking garage you can park in, it's free the first hour or you might get lucky with some street parking. Parking will be hell and most people double park to pick their order up after calling ahead because there is usually a long line. They are some of the most friendly staff and will even change stuff on the fly if you want to add something into an order. Lovely little sandwich place that has burgers and philly cheese steaks. Lots of varieties of philly cheese steaks to choose from. I had the original in 17 inches. Good god, I was really hungry but was only able to finish about 3/4s. For any normal human/meal, the 9 inch is honestly more than enough and if you're feeling peckish you can probably get a side. On the quality of the sandwich, was really solid with fresh ingredients and really great flavour. The bread itself was crispy and very nicely toasted. Why did it take me so long to come here?! I've been walking by I.B.'s for years but have never stopped to eat here. Well my coworker changed that this week when I told her I hadn't been. We each ordered the chicken mushroom cheesesteak. She got hers with the works and I got mine with everything except the mustard. We also ordered some curly fries to share. If I had stared at the menu longer, I would've noticed I could've added fries and a drink to my food for an extra $3. There's two tables on the sidewalk so we waited a few minutes before our orders were called. There aren't many places to sit but you can always get it to go and walk over to the Gypsy's/Boba Ninja/Thai Basil/Kingpin Donuts Area for a seat. Anyhow, thank goodness I got mine to go because there was no way I was going to be able to finish mine during my lunch break! The chicken was moist and there was a good helping of mushroom and cheese as well (which is important to me in a cheesesteak...especially when I opt not to get steak). There was also fresh lettuce and tomatoes which added to the flavor of this sub-like sandwich. The curly fries were also amazing. Very crunchy and thankfully not oily to the point where it seeps through the bag and you wonder just for a moment why you're eating fried food. The lack of oil bag stains helps to curb my guilt! I wanted to like IB's a lot more than I actually did after hearing all the good reviews about it. I ordered the mushroom cheesesteak, garlic fries (with curly fries), and plain sweet tots to share. They ran out of the sweet tots and had to cancel, though :(. The cheesesteak was a lot drier than I thought, and they didnt put that much sauce on it at all. There were also only like 5 mushrooms though we ordered the mushroom steak. They also missed the grilled onions; which was disappointing. The plus was that there was plenty of meat, though. The garlic fries were probably the best part, but even those weren't anything spectacular. There's not really any room to sit, so it's a good place to grab a quick lunch or dinner to go. There was a good amount of cheese which added a nice creaminess, and I also got it with mushrooms with gave it a nice mushroomy flavor. The bear style fries was also really good. It tasted like animal style fries, except when you get animal style fries, there's a bunch of sauce on top and none on the bottom, but with the bear style fries, there was sauce throughout. The only thing I didn't like about this place is that the food is a bit one note. The flavor is good but it's really simple, and I got bored of eating the sandwich after I ate half of it. I love sandwiches and this place has delicious ones!! That is a fact. The food quality is great, the timing is quick, ordering online is easy. I knocked one star because I have written modifications both times I have visited and they were ignored. This isn't a huge deal to me because I understand that things happen, especially in a busy restaurant such as this. However, if you have a food allergy or something like that, I would probably call and talk to someone as to save both of you time when you pick it up. As far as pandemic safety, it seems that they try and enforce protocols.
